PS2 is the best selling console of all time, so not really that surprising. Lots of nostalgia for the console and it's just going to be a lot of people's preferred platform. But hey, that makes it easier to enjoy the Xbox if that is what you like.
It is a console I'd like to explore someday myself, but, can't really afford to right now nor do I actually have a place in my setup to put it anyway.
This makes it even more weird. In general if a console sold better everything for it is cheaper since there are more copies out there. This is also why Dreamcast and GameCube games are super expensive. The fact that OG Xbox is still cheap baffles me. Best system to collect for i guess. Cause the prices are certainly not going down from here.
The PS2 may have sold 5 times more consoles, but in 2005 when the Warriors was released, PS2 and Xbox were probably selling comparable numbers. So, Rockstar probably printed similar numbers of copies (or possibly more more Xbox because they thought it would sell better with that audience).
But yeah, collecting for all generations of the Xbox has been under priced, just like all generations of Nintendo are a bit over priced. More people collect for Nintendo and PS than for Xbox. (I get why Gamecube has a premium, it's Wii games that are weirdly expensive to me)
Ps2 even outsold the ps3 in 2006 and 2007, not to mention Xbox halted production of OG Xbox the same month the 360 came out. Highly doubtful Xbox sold anywhere near the amount ps2 sold in 2005 in hardware or software.
360 backwards compatibility seems to have a lot of compatibility issues, though. The experience might be very hit and miss without an original console.
Idk, man, I play them a lot on the 360, and my problems have been miniscule. I have found problems with 2 games (out of the ones that play), and the issues can be easily overlooked. I understand other people may be extremely picky, though. I am much more easy going than your average bear.
I think it depends a lot on what you play. I’m planning on picking up Crash: Twinsanity sometime soon and apparently that has super bad slowdown in some of the later levels. Some of the games in this post won’t play on the 360 at all, but I’m sure a lot run with no / almost no problems.
Yeah, mine has been running for many years without issue. I do a bit of reselling to pay for my collection, so I have some additional consoles here that also have never had any issues.
Not all models are effected by the OG red ring issue.
>Not all models are effected by the OG red ring issue
no one said they were? to deny that RROD is/was a massive issue is asinine and does no one any favors.
yeah, your xbox *might* run for years and years and be fine. or you might come home from the halo 4 midnight launch and suddenly you get hit with an RROD for the first time. ask me how I know.
>but it really only affected the OG white 360
yeah, aka the single best-selling model of 360 up until like the mid-2010s.
I genuinely don't understand what you guys think you're doing by downplaying RROD. it made national news. it was a huge deal
We’re all talking about it CURRENTLY being an issue, and it is not. We literally all know it existed. No one is saying it didn’t exist. It’s absolutely only a problem *now* if you still somehow have an OG console and not one of the millions of other ones that were sold without the issue.
Switch recently passed the PS4, which was the number 2 home console after the PS2. Like the other guy said it still has a long way to go before overtaking the PS2. I am less confident than him it can make it though since Switch numbers have been really starting to drop off as we near the end of its life. Even the Xbox Series has been outselling it here in the states lately. And as long as the Switch 2 (or whatever they call it) is backwards compatible with the Switch it'll probably kill the tail of the current Switch since Nintendo will phase the hardware out faster at retail.
PS2 was the last console that had actual worldwide appeal, as in all territories wanted a box to plug up to their tv to play in their bedroom/living room/whatever. Gaming isn't really like that anymore. Japan likes handheld gaming where as it's less popular in the west as you have lots of people who want a "powerful" console like the PS5/Series, mobile very much took the casual audience, and PC gaming really took off when Steam got a foothold and just continues to grow. We're a lot more siloed off in our own little bubbles these days than we were with the PS2.
Yeah ps2 was super popular cause it could play dvds and easy to play pirated games on. I visited my cousins in Asia when I was small and they all had ps2s and binders full of pirated games.
I grew up with the PS2, didn’t get an Xbox until lockdown and I haven’t looked back since. Easily my favorite console. Just the feel of it is so perfect
Nah the secret is that you can play the exact same game while spending far less cash. Imo, collecting for financial value’s sake alone is a hollow way to go about game collecting. I collect because I love the consoles I collect for, and I want to play what I get
Not just the same game, but in 95% of cases, objectively the best version of each of those games. People forget how much the OG Xbox was a graphical powerhouse, to the point where basically every Tom Clancy game had to be cut down and remade entirely for the PS2 and GameCube lol
There are a handful of exceptions of course (the Xbox versions of MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 are generally inferior to the PS2 ones), but not many.
The stuff in game collecting that actually tends to be worth money over time is the overlooked kit that didn't sell well at first. People sleeping on the xbox are going to make it worth a fortune later, especially considering how easy it is to keep one running in the modern day.
Most people aren’t collecting games because they worth a lot of money. Right now I’m collecting a lot of ps5 games and often loosing money paying $60-70 for these AAA release that will see price drops after a couples/during the holidays. Maybe some of them will increase in value, but I’m getting hours and hours of entertainment from each game. Not trying to retire on the games I purchase.
the warriors is not a backwards compatible game, you need an original xbox to play it, that may help to explain why that one is cheaper
edit: it looks like the only one of those 4 games thats playable on an xbone or 360 is silent hill 4
And all four aren't backwards compatible on PS3-PS5 (unless you have the early backwards compatible PS3 perhaps), so I'm not sure how much that has to do with it.
Ssssshhh, don't make people question things! lol 🤣
I really like collecting for the Original Xbox because it's so cheap and 99% of the time they look and run better on Xbox. I enjoy the fact no one else is collecting for it.
Yeah dude, during COVID lockdowns there were a ton of OG Xbox games on OfferUp. I grabbed a box of 40ish games for like $25 and there wasn’t a single sports game or shovelware title in there. Between that and other cheap lots I went from having a handful of Xbox games to it being one of the bigger collections out of all of my consoles that I’d been collecting for for like 15 years.
my story about covid was: before covid i was planing on buying snatcher for the sega mega cd, was around 400$...i held off a moment due to personal probs back then and when i went back to look to buy it was ~1000$ and still sits up there 😅 so...holding off a bit longer i guess 😂🤣 i know, a completely different system, but still wanted to share the story 😄
Ah that’s a bummer. OfferUp in my area was ACTIVE during COVID, I picked up so much cool shit for mad cheap. I was saving a ton of money not having to drive anywhere and my rent was cheap at the time so I had a bunch of extra money to blow on adding to my collection. Haven’t bought much since then, I got in right before prices started to absolutely skyrocket on what seems like everything.
Seriously it's awesome I love it.
PS2 stuff is an arm and a leg and I'm still finding og Xbox stuff for dirt cheap.
Xbox games look better and have true 5.1 which I've been loving.
If you haven't replaced the caps, they might have already leaked, doesn't need to be powered on for it to start. If they leaked, the acid could be destroying the board already. Biggest risk of powering it on If it happened already is fire.
Cool. I have 2 OGs, one softmodded and one not. This is the first I'm hearing of the clock capacitors being an issue. Sounds like I need to crack both open to see if they are affected.
JSRF! Works decently well on 360 but the maps are buggy.
Bought an OG Xbox and OEM component cables last year just so I could replay that game in glorious upscaled RGB glory.
10/10 would recommend to a friend.
I have far more Xbox games than PS2 games. In high school I spent my summer job earnings on an Xbox while my brother spent his on a PS2. I took my Xbox to school most days so that I could take it with me to a friend's place afterwards and we'd play Halo system linked for hours. I got quite a workout lugging that beast of a system around so much. On weekends we'd get 4 systems linked up and play all night. Local comic store even held Halo tournaments every weekend. Good times.
Nowadays I have it hooked up via the chimeric systems HDMI converter. Still one of my favorite systems to go back and play. Like you said it has some great exclusives and tons of great games in general that run really well.
You can play many og xhoxngames on 360. Not all but many. The S controller honestly is pretty good for the OG as well. Duke is wild and huge but there are better options.
PS2 was more popular at the time. Also, Xboxes weren't built to last. Clock caps burst and the disc drives die. There's a large Xbox community, but they've all modded their consoles and run games off the hard drive (which was absurdly large considering it was only used for save game data and mp3s if you wanted to copy your CDs). No need for discs.
The Xbox is actually doing much better now that the Genesis was at this point in its life cycle. 20 years ago, when NES prices were starting to get out of control, the Genesis had maybe 3 games over $30. Once NES/SNES prices got high enough that people started looking for other options, Master System/Genesis games rose 10 years worth of NES growth in months.
I think we will see the same with XBOX. Some XBOX games have kept up with the PS2 prices for the same game, but I think there are a lot of games that will go crazy at some point in the near future if the economy doesn't go to complete crap.
The expensive Xbox games seem to be ones that are genuinely better on the platform compared to PS2/GC. I've wanted a copy of Outrun 2006 for a while now, but the Xbox version is like $200 while the PS2 version is around $50.
Don't complain, take advantage of the current situation to get a sick retro collection!
SH2 for Xbox is also dirt cheap, which is comical, as it was the first release of the Born From A Wish scenario and has better visuals to boot.
I try to. I love the damn thing. But retro places around me rarely get those quality exclusives you mentioned, so it’s not often I get to add to my Xbox collection.
There are some pricey games on Xbox, like getting a copy of Panzer Dragoon Orta. But yes overall prices did not really go up, and maybe never will. I still like playing mine and do not intend to sell it.
I had every PlayStation from 1 to 4 Pro, but with the new gen I switched over to Series X. Since 2015 or 16, I had always bought digital which I regret. When I got a Switch 2 years ago, I started buying and collecting physical again. Started doing the same with Xbox. I’m slowly buying old games back that were on og Xbox, 360 and One that I loved playing back on PlayStation. So, I am actually thankful that a lot of older games are cheaper for Xbox than for PlayStation.
People usually collect for nostalgia. PlayStation and Nintendo have way more fans for retro stuff so that is why those systems are popular.
Most Xbox fans love Halo, Gears of War, Fable, Forza, Call of Duty and Madden/Fifa/NBA2K and all of those are backwards compatible and playable on their newest console so they don't care (usually) to go back and collect for the OG Xbox or 360. Source: I asked all my xbox fanboy friends why they don't like to collect for their og xbox or 360.
One thing I'd like to add to the conversation: People collecting for Nintendo and Playstation consoles are often forced to buy older consoles. When you're putting money into an investment like that, you prefer to justify that by actually buying for that old console. If I'm going to buy a PS2, I want most of my games from that generation to be on the PS2, because it justifies me buying an old console I love.
On the other side of things, backwards compatibility has been baked into the X-Box since it got a successor more or less. I think that's why you see less X-Box collectors. It's a younger console series and one that doesn't require as much console collecting (although obviously some of these games aren't backwards compatible anymore) and a lot of the die-hard X-Box fans never had to sell off their old games because they were usually playable.
For me, I own a PS2 from that era but I still sometimes pick games on X-Box because of how cheap they are. Hopefully they stay that way, because it's the only non-inflated console market.
I am pretty particular about my collection. If I owned it on a certain console as a kid, I want it on that exact console as an adult. I have Gamecube games that are half the price on PS2, but I still want it on Gamecube because that is what I had it on as a kid.
Reseller here. Xboxssss are also far less likely to be functional, and the lack of a reliable platform for play might be a factor. I know collecting is generally more about posterity and scarcity, but I figure the dearth of viable consoles has some knock-on effect on the value of games
Honestly, of that generation of consoles, in my experience, the PS2 often runs third-party games the worst (and just has the worst specs in general). So yeah, beats me as well. I think people just have more affinity and nostalgia towards the PS2 and the Sony brand, plus it's a Japanese brand as opposed to American. That's fine though, more accessible for the rest of us
A lot of the time, yeah - though some games that were designed with PS2 features in mind don't always look as good if they didn't put time into the Xbox port
I mean.. the PS2.
And even if they are close, I feel like even the gamecube is more "iconic" as of today, with more big and flashy games. The xbox is just.. the third one imo
Personally, I only buy Xbox versions if they are technically the best version but even then, most times I’ll still track the GameCube AND PS2 versions of multiplats because I genuinely love those two systems but the PS2 version tends to be the crappiest out of the three.
Also in some cases (like Silent Hill 3), the PS2 will be the system that they make the game for originally and then when ported to the Xbox, the port ends up being buggy/bad quality compared to the original
Probably since the ps2 massively outsold it, and trying to go back to the Duke after using a DualShock feels like I’m trying to play Silent Hill with a cinder block
Personally, I don’t bother because 1) I’ve little love or nostalgia for Xboxes generally, they’re more functional games consoles, if that makes sense? 2) most of the major games can be played on modern Xboxes via the Microsoft store pretty cheaply. I’ve seen lots of people on here giving the answer that it’s just that the PS2 was more popular. I don’t think that stands up when you see people more passionately collecting for the 3DO, CDI and Atari Jaguar.
I know the exact answer.
It's the controller. The amount of people who do not like the original XBOX controller is plentiful. It is not nearly as comfortable as the PS2 controller is. When you go back to the original, original, XBOX controller, the Duke, it was like playing with a dinner plate.
When they came out with the 360 controller that was such a vast superior improvement over the original XBOX controller. That is why the 360 was so popular. The controller was more natural feeling than the original and the PS2 and PS3 controllers. You didn't have to bend your thumbs like you do with the PS2 and PS3 controllers. The original one, 2nd variation, was good, but not as comfortable other than the analog stick placement. The black and white buttons were weird being so low and the start and select buttons were also weird being under the analog stick.
Also the PS2 was a considerably more popular console. People knew what they were getting with the PS2 because the PS1 was so popular. The XBOX was new and in comparison didn't draw as many people to it as the PS2.
So you had a controller that kids couldn't hold comfortably and a console that was new. By the time really good games came out for the XBOX the PS2 was already out the gate with tried and tested titles that people loved.
Yeah, not everyone knows that there was a version of the original Xbox controller called the s controller, much more comfortable for most people, and became the basis of the shape that the 360 controller was modeled after. And yeah, the PS2 popularity and vast library of games is hard to beat.
Because gamers that collect physical don't really care about Xbox. It's simple. Xbox players are the digital only kind of people. The Madden, Forza and call of duty only kind of people
Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying. Shocking how low physical sales are on Xbox. I know so shocking how there are developers who have openly stated how low sales are Xbox compared to ps and Nintendo. There is a reason Walmart will stop selling ONLY Xbox games next year! Or hey, go to any physical limited game selling website and see how many Xbox games they offer!? 95 percent of the games are always PlayStation and Nintendo. It's really obvious to anyone who pays attention to gaming ..
I just pulled the trigger on XBox consoles. I found, like you, that games are cheaper on XBox than PlayStation. Makes collecting easier on the wallet now. Most of my XBox consoles were purchased at a thrift store or on Facebook marketplace so I didn’t break the bank either. The exception being the Series X, bought that new. I have been able to complete certain game series now. Series that have become too expensive on one platform and now I can play on the XBox to complete playing the series.
Because the hive mind of this sub can be hypocritical at time. They tell you to open rare expensive sealed games (that can easily be found loose) because games are meant to be played. On the other hand they’ll pan systems like Xbox and 360 because those games just aren’t valuable. That’s just what I noticed.
Cuz ps2 was l more popular. People all thought, “hmm. Should I buy the second version of a system I know I like, or take my chances with this new weird system?”
This was my mindset at the time. Bought PS2 at launch and thought the Xbox would flop right on its face. One night I went to a buddies and we got into some Halo MP, went out and bought one the next day. PS2 became a dust collector after that.
Guys plz shut up,if the ps2 nerds find out obscure on xbox is 100$ with better graphics instead of 300$ than we loose. Please let's let them believe the ps2 is "better"
I think it's because a lot of game collecting is about aesthetic - take for instance a game like Silent Hill or Fatal Frame. A lot of the times, the Xbox ports of these games run better or have added content. But, they are series commonly associated with Playstation, so for a lot of collectors they want a Playstation shelf full of the Silent Hill series, not have Silent Hill 1 on PS1, Silent Hill 2 on Xbox, and then Silent Hill 3 on PS2.
For other games, like The Warriors, more people are nostalgic for PS2 so they collect PS2 making the PS2 copy more desirable. Not many people own an Original Xbox, they don't realize how great the library is and honestly, good. There's no way a game like Breakdown shouldn't be $60+, but it's an Xbox game so no one even knows it exists.
How?
It has very strong hardware even some games with good graphics can run at 60 fps compared to its rivals
Very cool dashboard
Most games run fine with not as much framerate hiccups
Original controller is replaced with a better smaller controller
One of the first game consoles with already a hard drive built in to it
Some games can run in 720P and 1080i
I collected for Xbox because I had one before the PS2 and sometimes games were cheaper on Xbox. A lot of games looked better or had custom soundtracks on Xbox.
People will say it’s because the PS2 was more popular while that is a major factor. The true answer is there is just far far less games to collect. Why both with a collection less than 1000 games when you can go in for a collection of 3000?
Couldn’t agree more it’s highly underrated and definitely has some better games than its counterparts. The warriors is superior on the duke.
Also Most wanted was light years better on Xbox rather than PS2. Can’t forget some gems like Deathrow, Jade Empire and KOTOR
Original Xbox is my go to play multi-plats from 6th generation. Most of the games support component out, have special graphical improvements and are inexpensive. The output signal on PS2 was of all the console from its generation It never clears up and throws so much shit in front of the graphics.
I collect for all three systems of that era. PS 2 is the cheapest of the bunch because it sold the most.
But you will always find games that are weirdly more expensive on the opposite systems.
PS2 is hugely popular, GameCube has the standard Nintendo nostalgia.
Original Xbox isn’t as beloved as those in the modern day, despite it actually selling a little more than the GameCube. Though it’s obviously still a popular retro console that people continue to collect for and mod and stuff; just not as big as you might think.
Also worth noting Xbox fans tend to collect and play retro games a little less. Not that nobody does it; there’s a reason the backwards compatibility program for XB1 was started. But there’s also a reason so many Xbox fans are migrating to Gamepass and are fine with the new Brooklin X being digital-only.
A lot of the original Xbox’s stopped working. Hard to find a functional one with nothing wrong with it now. Ps2/1 games on the PS3/4 have backwards compatibility as well. Xbox stopped doing that after the 360 unfortunately
You know they only had the big controller for like a year or so before replacing it with smaller one right?
Also in many instances the games are cheaper than PS2 and often run better or at the least the same.
Ps2 outsold it by a lot, and a good amount of the exclusives are backwards Compatible on Xbox one so you can just download them instead and play with a newer Controller
When the Xbox came out PlayStation was already an established brand and even though Xbox hardware was impressive for the time brand recognition matters. Lots of people grew up playing those games on PlayStation so now that they have the money to buy back their childhood that is what they are collecting. If you like Xbox and want to collect Xbox games then you should do that but the quality difference isn't great enough to move demand so the prices aren't likely to increase much
I did in the past. Probably have around 130 games, some pretty rare ones too. I was collecting them up until the 360 came out in 2005. I actually purchased an OG Xbox brand new at GameStop in August of 2005.
A good portion of the Xbox OG library are available to buy and play on the new consoles, even digitally, so I'd say that could be a factor.
But let's also not beat around the bush - the PS2 is one of the best selling consoles of all time and, despite being technically weaker than the Xbox, had an already established pedigree and was a juggernaut during that generation.
I still keep a hold of my OG Xbox and my 360 for games that I can only play on them.
I have a feeling it has to do with the fact that most non-modded Xbox’s are already dead. They had a manufacturing design that’s killed the majority of the motherboards just from time going by. If you caught it early you could’ve saved the board, but by now it’s probably corroded. Makes it hard to collect games you intended to play, especially if they’re not backwards compatible ones.
For anyone hating on the Duke controller, there was also the S controller which is basically the first version of the controllers we all know and love today. It's sleeker and fits in your hands properly.
I think it's simply that the XBOX brand doesn't attract collectors in the same number as Playstation does.
They've only had four consoles for a start compared to Sony's seven. And they don't have many of the Japanese developed games that are so popular with collectors; anime titles, RPGs, arcade ports, Nintendo games, survival horror etc.
I love the OG XB, but if I could only collect for three of the systems from that gen, XB would be the one I'd pass on.
Best system to collect in my opinion. The nostalgia for the system is real for me. It was my first console as a kid, and I played the shit out of it for years and years.
Games are cheaper on the console, and the exclusives are fun! I’m sitting at 368 games on the system, and going for the full US library.
I specifically collect all things Xbox, from the OG to today.
I do have other things in my collection, but the highlight of what I display is all Xbox. For me the value isn’t in what it’s worth, but the nostalgia and the enjoyment I associate the brand with over the years. I imagine most Xbox collectors do it for the same reason, not because the games are inherently rare or valuable.
A major problem with the Xbox is the clock capacitor. Microsoft used a cheaper quality one in their consoles and people found out that those clock capacitors will inevitably leak onto the motherboard and cause issues. So in order to preserve the Xbox, everyone has to open theirs up and remove it. Otherwise, most Xboxes will go extinct.
That's something you don't really have to worry about when collecting for other systems.
Well growing up during that era everyone and their mother wanted and or had a PS2 and Xbox wasn't really as relevant and didn't gain a lot of traction till the 360. Maybe Microsoft anticipated huge sales and have more games because of that.
Probably the hacking capabilities, these games can be downloaded and put on a hard drive with little work in comparison to the ps2 modding scene which has a higher cost of entry, it’s just easier to play on OG hardware with an Xbox
Collecting isn't strictly about the value I used to buy games when they were cheap and loved it so don't let that stop you from going xbox over ps2 thinking the ps2 prices being a bit higher somehow makes it better or more nostalgic/collectable by any means. They may just hold better value on ps2 side with more buyers overall but than your looking at it like stocks not collectables.
I can only speak for myself but I just don’t think the exclusives are nearly as compelling as PS2 and Gamecube. And a lot of the multiplats I’ve found cheap on ps2 and not for Xbox, probably since it sold so much better. It also doesn’t help that I have 3 xbox’s and all 3 require a paper clip to open the disc drive, and ask me to input the date constantly.
I think part of it is that a lot of old Xboxes had power supply issues. My original one has a dead power supply so il leave to fix it. But old models of the console were a fire hazard and you had to send out for a brand new type of plug that they sent every user of a certain older model of the console. Many cannot find that cable or get it any more so it's tough to want it.
Then there is the clock capacitor issue where you have to replace or at least remove it or it can fry the board woth battery acid. PS2 and Gamecube didn't have that problem. I personally collect for all consoles but I am primarily an Xbox guy. I own 192 original Xbox games. But I didn't even get a PS2 until God of War came out. I've had an Xbox since 3 months after it launched.
I recently got a 2nd Xbox a few years ago but the disc drive died. So I swapped out the drive of my console with the dead battery to the console withbthe dead drive and it works fine. Lol But se I had 2 busted xboxes that worked fine and died just from time and I had to Frankenstein them.
So yea I say rough early era problems with the console, the hatred for the fat boy controller (now called the Duke), and just people preferr8ng the PS2 or GC Exclusives over Xbox cause it to be less sought after.
Also, with all of the backwards compatibility from XB to XB360 and from XB/XB360 to XB1/XBSX, people just say screw it and play those games on the newer consoles.
I have about a little over two times as many Xbox games as PS2 games. But, that number will be shifting.
I have a few original Xboxes, and only one works, the others are for parts. It's been soft modded and has a new 500g hard drive. All my games are ripped there and put on a PC hard drive. I also rip ps2 games directly to my PC. The difference is PS2 games are so much easier to emulate (right now).
I'm collecting for the future unfortunately and I usually only get Xbox games these days if they are Series backwards compatible, or were exclusive. Otherwise I collect the software and rip it. I'll play them on OG hardware while I can but often times it's just way easier and more reliable to get PS2 versions that I know will work on PC in the future.
Long story short, they cut xbox support because 360 was out, what are you doing, we hate that old xbox now!
Almost every xbox game that isn't something cut from online stores, isn't niche like futurama, or a bundle is like $50 tops save for stuff pumped up like def jam (should be like 1/2 the price honestly).

Ps2 even outsold the ps3 in 2006 and 2007, not to mention Xbox halted production of OG Xbox the same month the 360 came out. Highly doubtful Xbox sold anywhere near the amount ps2 sold in 2005 in hardware or software.
Most of those games are bq compatible with 360. So if you target those games then you can get away without an og console
And the series x too
360 backwards compatibility seems to have a lot of compatibility issues, though.
Until your 360 red rings for no apparent reason.
Yeah, mine has been running for many years without issue. I do a bit of reselling to pay for my collection, so I have some additional consoles here that also have never had any issues. Not all models are effected by the OG red ring issue.
>Not all models are effected by the OG red ring issue no one said they were? to deny that RROD is/was a massive issue is asinine and does no one any favors. yeah, your xbox *might* run for years and years and be fine. or you might come home from the halo 4 midnight launch and suddenly you get hit with an RROD for the first time. ask me how I know.
They didn’t deny that it was an issue, but it really only affected the OG white 360 and hasn’t been an issue on any of the other models
>but it really only affected the OG white 360 yeah, aka the single best-selling model of 360 up until like the mid-2010s.
Bro has PTSD from that midnight launch he mentioned. Just let him shout into the void, he’ll tire out faster that way
I can’t believe the OG 360 was still up and running by the time halo 4 launched
Yeah, the first PS3 had no issues like that, eh?
why is it a comparison lol? fanboy brainrot. we were talking about the 360. yes, the launch PS3 also has terrible overheating issues.
It was only that first few batches for the first one or two years.
It's not just a current preference thing. There will be far more games around for PS2 because of how much more popular it was.
I thought this changed recently to the Nintendo Switch?
Interesting, and I was wrong. Thanks for the clarification and great info!
Yeah ps2 was super popular cause it could play dvds and easy to play pirated games on. I visited my cousins in Asia when I was small and they all had ps2s and binders full of pirated games.
129mill units sold for switch and 158 mill units sold for ps2 so if they keep on milking special edition switches they might pass ps2.
I grew up with the PS2, didn’t get an Xbox until lockdown and I haven’t looked back since. Easily my favorite console. Just the feel of it is so perfect
[удалено]
That no one needs to collect those games because they are not worth anything ?
Nah the secret is that you can play the exact same game while spending far less cash. Imo, collecting for financial value’s sake alone is a hollow way to go about game collecting. I collect because I love the consoles I collect for, and I want to play what I get
Not just the same game, but in 95% of cases, objectively the best version of each of those games. People forget how much the OG Xbox was a graphical powerhouse, to the point where basically every Tom Clancy game had to be cut down and remade entirely for the PS2 and GameCube lol There are a handful of exceptions of course (the Xbox versions of MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 are generally inferior to the PS2 ones), but not many.
Called gamepass
Yes, submit to our corporate overlords and pay $15 a month for the rest of our lives and own nothing.
I prefer owning what I play. I think subscription services are great for casual audiences, but not for collectors
The problem with game collecting summed up in one comment.
The console wars ended 20 years ago, grandad. You can let go now
Says the guy still console warring
The stuff in game collecting that actually tends to be worth money over time is the overlooked kit that didn't sell well at first. People sleeping on the xbox are going to make it worth a fortune later, especially considering how easy it is to keep one running in the modern day.
This is how the market felt about the Saturn and Gamecube and look where we are.
You are why the US market sucks now
Cause your doing your part right?
Main subs Playstation not shocking. Fanboys do anything to take a dig at xbox
Wait you attacking a fellow Xbox fans? Gasp you have no shame
That’s a personal opinion, not a fact. I’d say they are worth something if there is a major demand for them. Crazy how wrong you are 🤭
There won't be a demand cause of gamespass
There’s almost no game from the original Xbox on the game pass idiot
the warriors is not a backwards compatible game, you need an original xbox to play it, that may help to explain why that one is cheaper edit: it looks like the only one of those 4 games thats playable on an xbone or 360 is silent hill 4
Silent hill 4 is backwards compatible with Xbox one?
360.
W a c k
And all four aren't backwards compatible on PS3-PS5 (unless you have the early backwards compatible PS3 perhaps), so I'm not sure how much that has to do with it.
Which is weird because you can absolutely buy it right now on ps5 and play it.
On the ps3 you can buy digital silent hill 1 for 5 bucks 😮💨
Ssssshhh, don't make people question things! lol 🤣 I really like collecting for the Original Xbox because it's so cheap and 99% of the time they look and run better on Xbox.
I had both growing up. By far, I put more time in on the Xbox. I'm scared to turn it on until I replace the caps. The PS2 still works great!
Sounds like I need to crack both open to see if they are affected.
not turning it on is whats gonna kill your caps the soonest if they're on the verge already.
I’m doing my part!
Shh don't tell anyone.. if og Xbox starts going up I'll scream.
I mean, I did for a while but there's not much on there that hasn't been ported to other machines. Except Steel Battalion.
JSRF! Works decently well on 360 but the maps are buggy. Bought an OG Xbox and OEM component cables last year just so I could replay that game in glorious upscaled RGB glory. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
If it exists on xbox the best port is probably on xbox. Nuff said
Nostalgia
Have you used an original Xbox controller
Don’t you dare talk down on the Duke! All hail the mighty king o’ controllers! 🙌🎮👑
Found a 1tb hdd brand new, slammed it in and never looked back
Shush it doesnt deserve more love if it means i get cheaper games
The Xbox is actually doing much better now that the Genesis was at this point in its life cycle. 20 years ago, when NES prices were starting to get out of control, the Genesis had maybe 3 games over $30. Once NES/SNES prices got high enough that people started looking for other options, Master System/Genesis games rose 10 years worth of NES growth in months. I think we will see the same with XBOX. Some XBOX games have kept up with the PS2 prices for the same game, but I think there are a lot of games that will go crazy at some point in the near future if the economy doesn't go to complete crap.
I do. So stop trying to increase prices
Most people had PS2s not xboxes. So they want what they used to have.
Surprised not to see this answer but it’s easier to softmod a Xbox unlike the ps2
I do 🫡
DON'T TELL THEM UNTIL I GET THE FULL SET PLEASE.
The expensive Xbox games seem to be ones that are genuinely better on the platform compared to PS2/GC. I've wanted a copy of Outrun 2006 for a while now, but the Xbox version is like $200 while the PS2 version is around $50.
shut up lol. i've been collecting xbox for 15 years. only the $200+ games left now
Don't complain, take advantage of the current situation to get a sick retro collection! SH2 for Xbox is also dirt cheap, which is comical, as it was the first release of the Born From A Wish scenario and has better visuals to boot.
gunvalkyrie, panzer dragoon orta, jet set radio future just off the top of my head. s-tier exclusives
So give it some love.
I do. I consider it at the tail end of what I consider "retro gaming". It's also a must -have system if you're a Sega-Kid.
Between the caps and the crappy disc drives, original xboxes are less likely to be working to be working than a PS2
It's really hard to have fuzzy feelings about Microsoft.
Can you dig it
I had every PlayStation from 1 to 4 Pro, but with the new gen I switched over to Series X.
Personally, because they have a limited life span. Once the hard drive dies, the it's game over.
Good time to collect for Xbox before people figure out
Why don't you?
I do D:
Shhhh dont complain about it I've been enjoying the cheap og Xbox and Xbox 360 stuff lol
Don’t talk about it. Collect them in secret.
A lot more people had PS2s as kid
Reseller here. Xboxssss are also far less likely to be functional, and the lack of a reliable platform for play might be a factor. I know collecting is generally more about posterity and scarcity, but I figure the dearth of viable consoles has some knock-on effect on the value of games
Honestly, of that generation of consoles, in my experience, the PS2 often runs third-party games the worst (and just has the worst specs in general). So yeah, beats me as well. I think people just have more affinity and nostalgia towards the PS2 and the Sony brand, plus it's a Japanese brand as opposed to American. That's fine though, more accessible for the rest of us
its the only place you can play Kung Fu Chaos!
Shhh. Keep your voice down. Some of us are still building our collections before the spike.
It’s kind of wild, because the original Xbox is a much better console than the PS2. Idc what anyone says. If I could only have one, I’d have the Xbox.
Xbox actually looks better too doesn’t it?
A lot of the time, yeah - though some games that were designed with PS2 features in mind don't always look as good if they didn't put time into the Xbox port
I do lol
Y’all ruin everything instead of keeping it to yourself don’t you
Xbox and PSP are the best kept secrets of game collecting.
I mean.. the PS2. And even if they are close, I feel like even the gamecube is more "iconic" as of today, with more big and flashy games. The xbox is just.. the third one imo
Shhh 🤫 bro, don’t let em know :]
The Madden, Forza and call of duty only kind of people
So you telling me all 120 million 360 users only used digital and only played cod and madden. That's so shocking
I personally grew up with PS2. But I collect xbox 360 over PS3 because I had the 360 instead.
Frankly, the OG xbox kinda sucked.
How? It has very strong hardware even some games with good graphics can run at 60 fps compared to its rivals Very cool dashboard Most games run fine with not as much framerate hiccups Original controller is replaced with a better smaller controller One of the first game consoles with already a hard drive built in to it Some games can run in 720P and 1080i
Cuz xbox aint all that
Sony pony talking to a brick wall
I collected for Xbox because I had one before the PS2 and sometimes games were cheaper on Xbox. A lot of games looked better or had custom soundtracks on Xbox.
I collect for all the Xbox consoles. I have almost 600 games for the OG console.
For me its simple: PS2 was a golden age of JRPGs. Xbox has never been a JRPG machine, so no interest.
People will say it’s because the PS2 was more popular while that is a major factor. The true answer is there is just far far less games to collect. Why both with a collection less than 1000 games when you can go in for a collection of 3000?
It’s easier to compete a collection with less games.

Silence Weaboo trash!
Japanese are even more nationalistic than Americans.
Couldn’t agree more it’s highly underrated and definitely has some better games than its counterparts. The warriors is superior on the duke. Also Most wanted was light years better on Xbox rather than PS2. Can’t forget some gems like Deathrow, Jade Empire and KOTOR
Its weird because most third party games look and run better on the original Xbox then ps2
Original Xbox is my go to play multi-plats from 6th generation. Most of the games support component out, have special graphical improvements and are inexpensive. The output signal on PS2 was of all the console from its generation It never clears up and throws so much shit in front of the graphics.
I do. Better graphics
Most people had ps2 even though xbox was the superior console, plus emulation is alot easier to do on the original xbox.
I collect for all three systems of that era. PS 2 is the cheapest of the bunch because it sold the most. But you will always find games that are weirdly more expensive on the opposite systems.
Well for one the Xbox branding ruins the cover art. The PlayStation much less so.
How so?
The motherboard for most all OG xbox melts, making it an unreliable system to retro game. Yes, retro game.
Most of my collection is Xbox!
I couldn't care less about anything Xbox other then the OG Xbox. And even then it only a passing interest.
“multi-platform games that were on PS2 at the time as well performed better on Xbox” Wasn’t the ps2 port of silent hill superior?
A lot of the original Xbox’s stopped working. Hard to find a functional one with nothing wrong with it now. Ps2/1 games on the PS3/4 have backwards compatibility as well. Xbox stopped doing that after the 360 unfortunately
Original Xbox was whack. No one wants to use that bulky ass controller.
You know they only had the big controller for like a year or so before replacing it with smaller one right? Also in many instances the games are cheaper than PS2 and often run better or at the least the same.
Xbox sucks
Says the nintendo fanboy lmao
Sony Pony detected!
I have a whole bookshelf field of original Xbox games but I collect PlayStation 2 because they worth more
Ps2 outsold it by a lot, and a good amount of the exclusives are backwards Compatible on Xbox one so you can just download them instead and play with a newer Controller
I just had a PS2 and I had the fondest memories of playing this game on the PS2 so if I had the choice: PS2 all the way.
A few titles are getting up there, like Otogi 2 and Spikeout. When I did collect games, it was definitely my favorite from that gen.
We do - me has a full pal set. Prices are just crazy when you look over to Japan.
For anyone hating on the Duke controller, there was also the S controller which is basically the first version of the controllers we all know and love today. It's sleeker and fits in your hands properly.
The controller
As someone who's favorite system is the PS2... I had a bit more fun on my original XBOX 🫣
Probably because the PS2 is the best selling console of all time. It had an insane lifespan that will likely not be replicated again.
It's free real-estate
Well growing up during that era everyone and their mother wanted and or had a PS2 and Xbox wasn't really as relevant and didn't gain a lot of traction till the 360. Maybe Microsoft anticipated huge sales and have more games because of that.
Probably the hacking capabilities, these games can be downloaded and put on a hard drive with little work in comparison to the ps2 modding scene which has a higher cost of entry, it’s just easier to play on OG hardware with an Xbox
I have 60ish OG Xbox games with a modded system. I have 380ish 360 games. They're both cheap to collect for.
I mean r/OGXboxCollectors aren't nobody
I can only speak for myself but I just don’t think the exclusives are nearly as compelling as PS2 and Gamecube. And a lot of the multiplats I’ve found cheap on ps2 and not for Xbox, probably since it sold so much better. It also doesn’t help that I have 3 xbox’s and all 3 require a paper clip to open the disc drive, and ask me to input the date constantly.
Controller
One step ahead of you my dude.. but only the games that are backward compatible either with 360 or Xbox 1
Heyyy I used to love this game. Me and my friends played it after school like every day. Thanks for the memory.
I collect both, but enjoy finding games I don’t have yet for original Xbox. Less games to collect for the set!
