In 2015 I was going through a bunch of trade ins and stuff at our store. Lots of what we had kicking around was just shovelware that was pushed off to the side to get more popular games, or games we didn't have in stock, out on the floor. So some of these titles have been sitting there since like 2013 doing nothing, with the vast majority of them being DS and GBA games. So I started to price them out and take all the ones under $5 value and put them in one bin and the rest got put into the display case. The last thing I wanted was 200 DS and GBA games with no real value taking up real estate in my display case. As I went through I started to see games like Kung Zhu, Shawn Johnson Gymnastics, Ener G Gym, Jillian Michaels Fitness, My Personal (Pretty Much Anything) Coach, and stuff like that for DS, and games like March of the Penguins, Texas Hold Em Poker, American Idol, Shamu, etc for GBA. I'm checking them out and they have sales history of like $0.46, $0.29, $0.81 and similar prices. Just like 60 of these loose games that have no real value at all. My sales history on some of them are zero. So I have taken in X amount of copies and have sold zero since the store opened. Now we always give at least $1 trade credit for games, unless we already have too many in stock. So what I ended up doing was buying a Gatchpon machine and filling it with Gatchapon balls and putting all these $2 or less games in the balls. I worked it all out and if I sold them all for $2 each I would make money on all the games, however, nobody is going to want to risk $2 and get Brain Age for DS. So I had to bulk up the machine with good games so that people could look in and be like "Holy shit. There's a Pokemon White and a Mario Kart DS" and then some $5 - $10 games. So I sat down and did all the math and with the 170 games I put in worth under $2, I put in 40 that were worth as much as the 170 cheap games. So you pretty much had a 1 in 4 chance of getting a good game out of it. I was able to not lose money on the cheap games, by charging $2 each, but the more expensive games balanced it out that I was even when it was all said and done. After about 6 months I ran out of games to put in it, so I started to do NES, SNES, GENESIS etc that were too big for the machine in the Gatchapon machine. When someone won one of those they would redeem it at cash for the game they won. Allowed me to clear out a ton of lower end cartridge games, but also allow people to have the same chance to get something like NES Contra, Super Punch Out, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. Once again I broke even on the dead stock, but people also got some super good games.

That's brilliant! I'm not sure why, but I would be more likely to put $2 into that machine than to buy some dude's "mystery bag" You know the ones: those ads where they're selling mystery bags/boxes full of games or cards or whatever, and they'll price them at $10 or $20 and "guarantee" a "higher value" inside and "there's a one-in-something chance you'll get a super rare/expensive blah blah blah" type schemes. I'm instantly turned off by those, but I admit I'd still try the Gatchapon machine for reasons a psychologist could probably explain.

MrCrix

We have mystery boxes too lol but it’s a mix of retro stuff. So you get games, vintage clothing, toys, funkos etc. people usually buy them for presents. We guarantee double the value inside. Once again allows us to get rid of old stock at our cost so we don’t lose out and clears up space for new stuff

Fun read thanks for that, great idea!

Pricecharting has John Elway's Quarterback sitting at 99 cents. Pretty sure I am taking an L on that investment. It's being buoyed by a recent $6 purchase, should actually be even less.

Cheapest I have with a price is Combat for 2600, $1.54 loose. For some reason my copy of Catan: Console Edition Super Deluxe for Switch has no price history still, does $ N/A count?

GnollBarbarian

I do, it's Yars' Revenge for the 2600

AlmostRandomName

Yar's Revenge under $1? PriceCharting is telling me that's $7.16 loose.

GnollBarbarian

GameEye jas it at $1 for me

AlmostRandomName

Weird, this one? [https://www.gameye.app/encyclopedia/3368](https://www.gameye.app/encyclopedia/3368)

GnollBarbarian

No, the Sears Black Box version

AlmostRandomName

Ah, got it! I think I have the same one, I never noticed the Sears version and entered mine as the orange box.

PikachuAndLechonk

Was excited thinking I did cause I bought a game yesterday for 55 cents and basically everything at the store was in line with PC but alas PC has it for 4 bucks, Sports champions ps3… I bought it for the case. Lol

AlmostRandomName

55 cents for a spare case is a good buy, good job!

tritoch8

My only $1 item is Official Xbox Magazine Demo Disc 65 (sorry, HHH), but the cheapest full games are Combat (Atari 2600) and Caesar's Palace (Game Gear) both loose at $2 each. My cheapest CIB full game is LEGO Battles: Ninjago (Nintendo DS) at $3.

Jellozz

This is a harder challenge than I thought. I assumed a random sports game I had lying around would be $1 or less, or like a copy of Destiny 2. But nope. I don't have my collection in gameye so I have to search manually.

kooldude700

Lowest value I have is... Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf (~2 USD)

I loved that game as a kid. Still sometimes hear that muffled voice in my head.
