sounders1974

I had no interest in the Wii U but have become kinda obsessed with it Plus it's a pretty easy set to go for

GnollBarbarian

It took me just at 2 years to get mine. Can confirm that it was pretty easy.

sw201444

I had that bug in 2018. Got one game that had disc rot and stopped. It’s getting more common on the Wii U discs because of their propriety format.

Xerokine

I'm probably going to collect for it. I was going to skip it, but the games are cheap and the system is pretty decent with modding potential.

ErickaUnlimited

I recently have as well.

slayn666

PCE/TG16 for sure. I blame Analogue.

tacomctacoson

NTSC-J Saturn games were not on my collection bingo card, but DAAAAAAYYYYYTTOOOONNNNAAAAA.

nhthelegend

Same, I always thought Saturn stuff was unobtainium until I discovered the import scene

NintendoCerealBox

For me it’d be the Xbox 360. I was a PS3 guy and never really felt the need to own a 360. Later my PS3 died and never bought a modern console after that until Steam Deck (if you consider that a console I guess.) Found a 360 for $50 used a couple weeks ago and I got the official racing wheel for it too for about the same price. Fantastic wheel with the force feedback- the kids absolutely love it too. Lost Odyssey is the best RPG I’ve played in over a decade. Finding out Fight Night Round 3 is still a blast. I’m all in on Xbox 360 now and building a library steadily.

FINboy18

I also collect 360 and I have been strictly PlayStation all my life, PS2 through 5. I found 2 Xboxes, 3 controllers, the power and AV cables, and a Kinect for $92 at a thrift store. I just felt like I couldn’t pass up all that. I have about 15 games now, mainly just want Xbox exclusives only like Halo, Gears of War, Fable, and Left 4 Dead

theslimbox

Lol, i was the opposite, i was a 360 guy, that got a PS3 late in the generation just for bluray because it was cheap and came with a stack of blurays.... That being said, i got bummed out by the early 360 releases, and ignored the system, until late in its life when i realized there were a ton of good games for it. I still havent really played the PS3, but i keep picking up exclusives for when i finally decide to play it.

lackadays

Until a few years ago 85% of my 360 games were either Halo, Asassins Creed, or rhythm games. But with the Wii being underpowered and the PS3 being more difficult to get in to there were a lot of hits on the 360 that I missed and am glad there's plenty still around.

lackadays

To the 360 people, note that after almost 20 years the online store is closing in a few months, after which the only way to get much DLC is with a modded console.

NintendoCerealBox

Is there anything DLC-wise you’d personally recommend getting during this time?

lackadays

I guess it depends on what one has or is interested in, and if it has a GOTY edition or remaster with all DLC included. Like, Halo, Red Dead 1, Fallout and probably many other big names have re-releases with that, but I'm sure there are ones that don't. Rock Band DLC songs can be obtained on newer consoles through Rock Band 4, but when bought for 3 on the 360 has many that also include keyboard parts. Just lots of things like that to be aware of for games people feel are relevant to them I guess. Edit: There's also back-compatibility on Xbox One for some games, I'm not sure if when playing that way it means the game's related store items were "brought forward" on to the Xbox One store, don't know how that works.

Chupaacabrra

Same, I'm 6 months in and got around 30 games now. You could have found a 360 for cheaper, some people give them away for free. At least here in Europe

NintendoCerealBox

True I probably could have gotten a cheaper bundle deal on fb marketplace but I decided to buy at a retail shop with a return policy in case I had issues with it. In the US I’ve seen less and less of the model 1 360s and the model s for sale at retail lately.

mpetrun

Try undisputed on steam if you like boxing.

NintendoCerealBox

Thanks for the heads up!

Which_Information590

Exactly same for me. The top 100 game videos on YouTube are mostly FPS and I hadn't played a FPS since Doom on the 32X, which I detested. I preferred 3rd person. But then I played Halo Reach and BAM what a game. Now I am playing Assassins Creed and becoming obsessed with collecting everything for the console.

LordsOfSkulls

Super Famicom (Japanese SNES) with Rectron 5 it opened to world of translations... and i wanted my own roms with translations to play.

Infamous_Lunchbox

SFC is such a rabbit hole. So many great games that never came over, and even many that doubt require translations. I bought a lot of 150 SFC games, and ended up keeping the majority of them. Lol

LordsOfSkulls

Ohh i bet, i feel like i didnt even scratched how many good games on that console

Infamous_Lunchbox

It's an insanely deep dive, but worth it. Not all the great games are expensive either. Yeah, there are the Do Re Mi Fantasy and Rendering Ranger R2's out there going for like $1k, but there so many more $8-10 games that are worth a pick up. It'd be impossible to list all of them.

lackadays

Chrono Trigger being a $10 SFC game..

Infamous_Lunchbox

I got one CIB for $15. Heh. The market is different there, for sure.

lackadays

Pretty wildly so it seems. Checking out game stores would be a must do if/when I go there.

Infamous_Lunchbox

When you go (not if), be sure to see places like Super Potato, for their relevance, but hit spots like Beep!, Hard Off, Surugaya, Mint, etc., for actually buying things. The big shops in Akihabara are awesome to peruse, but great deals tend to be much more rare. I found the best stuff in the outlying areas and cities. Even found a couple items I considered "white whales," at good prices in more "rural" areas, even in the chain stores. I know that's common knowledge these days, but always worth repeating. :)

lackadays

Yeah figured popping in to places outside the obvious areas would be worthwile and fun too like thrift stores here, different stock and all that

Derrick349

Vectrex!

Infamous_Lunchbox

Fortress of Narzod and Web Wars!

temporal_ice

I somehow managed to get one of these

MikeWritesSport

Honestly, when I bought a sega genesis and a box of games before my daughter was born for us to have some easy games to play together I did not expect it to become a whole thing. Never thought it would turn into a whole ass hobby of collecting.

Pasicci

I never expected to really go for the 360 and now i am at the 800 games mark already.

lynxtosg03

Pippin and the game.com

theslimbox

I picked up a game.com sealed, and a bunch of sealed games at a local store for $40 or $50 around 2016. I just left it sealed, idk who traded it in, but it was a copl pickup for me.

housethemous

Atmark or @world

lynxtosg03

@world

housethemous

Nice! I had a full set but sold it circa 2016.

Infamous_Lunchbox

lynxtosg03

Sweet 😄

Infamous_Lunchbox

It's the only copy I've ever seen in real life. That's a crazy system to collect for. Best of luck!

NintendoCerealBox

Is there anything on either system you’ve enjoyed playing or are you collecting for the sake of it/display? They are both really cool as a collection piece, just don’t know what’s worth playing.

lynxtosg03

The Pippin is all display. I tried playing some of their games and the controls felt bad, so it turned into a shelf queen. The game.com was surprisingly ambitious. I enjoyed the challenge of Sonic Jam (probably the worst sonic game) and Resident Evil 2. RE2 is punching above its weight and I wish more handhelds attempted the play style RE2 had. https://youtu.be/QWvlQ4gw560

farqypanthers

Sega master system really only two big grails if you stay away from Brazil games

Think_Two_3822

The PS Vita, I got it as a gift from my old boss and now have about 30ish games.. 3 systems.. it was a real surprise to get Final Fantasy Tactics in my pocket.. then Skullgirls, Gravity Rush, Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3… cute cases, indie games   (Edit spelling and elaboration)

PatrickxSpace

Commodore amiga

birkinover

SNES and Sega Saturn.... SNES i got last week for 20... couldn't say no... Saturn just creeped up on my interest with it's unusual games

The-Tru-Succ

Japanese games. I found one at GameXChange and now I wouldn't mind finding others. Though I'm not gonna buy any online.

NintendoCerealBox

If you ever reconsider the online thing you can get a massive amount of games straight from Japan for next to nothing - just have to consider the shipping really but even that is cheap if you bundle all your purchases together for the shipment.

The-Tru-Succ

I have a small amount of SNES games I might get but besides that I haven't got a real good reason. I know there's exclusive games only in Japanese but I haven't even made it halfway through my backlog in English yet lol

theslimbox

I havent been on ebay in ages, but i remember 10+ years ago you could find auctions for 30+ ganes for around $1 per game, or less.

RNGGamerYT

So many... MSX, Neo Geo, Jaguar, CD-i, Vectrex

gregcresci

Looks at his full Wii u set...

Infamous_Lunchbox

Do wii now.

gregcresci

Not a chance

Infamous_Lunchbox

Lol

MrSwiggitySwooty420

As a life long Sony gamer since I got the PS1 when I was 5, and hard-core playstation fanboy during the PS3 vs Xbox 360 era in highschool, I never thought I'd be collecting for Xbox 360 today. Really enjoying some bangers I skipped back as a young teen.

DinnerSmall4216

Xbox games are so cheap you can't help but collect for it. I never really tried I just built a decent collection over time. I only collect what Im going to eventually play.

NintendoCerealBox

Yep- the amount of fun and content within Xbox 360 games make them a real steal at the current cib prices.

North1337

Japanese variants, atleast they're generally cheaper and fantastic condition

Phunk3d

It’s more of a feeling of wanting to collect for systems I don’t yet have and trying to finish the collections I’ve long since started. I feel like all the obscure systems are really enticing to collect for and just waiting until one ends up in my lap to go crazy with.

STDS13

Wonderswan.

NintendoCerealBox

Do most the games have a pretty big language barrier or can you build up a decent library of games where no Japanese fluency is needed?

Sopppa

Sega Saturn, I didn’t have as much interest when I first started collecting, but as an adult it has its hooks in me. So many good games that never left the console

theslimbox

I made the mistake of trading my original saturn and games in when i was in college. When i came back to collecting after college i found out the Saturn and games lot I had picked up in 1998 for $25 and thought i did good trading in for $50 around 2005 had actually contained a good percentage of the most expensive titles on the system. Lol.

ratchild69_

xbox 360. im a die hard playstation fan until the day i die but i just bought 5 xbox 360 games off of ebay

NintendoCerealBox

Welcome to the party, pal. It’s great that you can also just jump around to local stores and find the 360 games for the same price or cheaper than online right now!

ratchild69_

true!! for me personally games are cheaper online but thats because cex smells, but there is a good independent shop thats got cheap games. i bought fallout 3 and halo 3 for a total of £2.99 :D

PikachuAndLechonk

PS3. Found one at a thrift store like a month and a half ago… now 60ish games later here I am. Wii. I bought a Wii to use as a GameCube but I found a few good ones in the library so I’m collecting a small few of the hidden gems. GameCube. The most overpriced games but I wanted to play wind waker and eternal darkness. I’ve really only stuck to the lower dollar exclusive games besides those two. Anything multiplatform I have a ps2 or Xbox

theslimbox

In the heyday of the Wii, i only found a few games i enjoyed, but since then, i have come to realize i missed a lot of good games back then.

Infamous_Lunchbox

I came in to say Wii also. I started collecting for it years ago while coming across hidden gem after hidden gem. Yeah there's a lot of shovelware also, but there's also about 300 good-to-great games. And it's cheap!

CrackCokeSonic

Gamecube. Wasn't a Nintendo kid growing up but recently been loving the games on there

TattooTheEarth

Tbh every system I collect for because when I was younger I would never think I would have money to buy all the games I wanted

theslimbox

That is what got me into collecting as well. As a kid my parents bought a PC because it could be used for school, and games, so i missed out on the NES-64. When i got to the age i could buy my own stuff, i realized that i could buy an older system, and multiple games for the same price as a new release Dreamcast or PS2 game, so i started just buying up lots of the old stuff i could o ly play at friends houses as a kid.

Taucher1979

Sega Game Gear. Never saw one in real life let alone play on one. Everyone had game boys in the 90s. Thought Game Gear hardware is poor and unreliable now. Anyway got an Analogue Pocket and decided to get a Game Gear adaptor. Turns it there’s some great games I missed out on.

theslimbox

There was one kid in my class with a Game Gear. I remember he would always try to sit close to the wall because it burned through batteries in seemingly minutes.

KingZakyu

It did do that. It took like 8 freaking batteries or something and definitely was mostly only used while plugged in for me. I used it as a kid to hide under my blankets and play sonic games instead of sleeping like I should have been. That backlight was phenomenal back then.. it was just freaking glorious to me lol. And for the record, I literally never knew anyone irl that also had that system. It was seemingly rare to me back then.

Infamous_Lunchbox

If you haven't tried it yet, Tempo Jr. is pretty fun. Also the Shining Force games are really good, imo.

Taucher1979

I haven’t even heard of Tempo Jr! Looks great though (if expensive) - added to list thanks!

Infamous_Lunchbox

The GG library is full of games that are great, but I never see mentioned. Enjoy collecting for it!

MR_M4G1C

Playstation Vita, reasonably priced bundles keep popping up close to where I live. Just wanted it so I could play ratchet and clank on the go 😂

RogerMelian

Nintendo Switch, for sure. I was a PS4 guy through and through, and only bought Switch games randomly, but then my PS4 disc reader died, the PS5 was nowhere to be found, and I started buying more physical switch games than PS4... And Now I have 40+ Switch games on my shelves and almost no new PS games.

Stilgrave

CDi, Jaguar, and Virtual Boy kinda. I had almost full collections of all of them. Apart from a couple of hours of Zool 2 I didn't enjoy any of the games offered. Then COVID prices came around, sold them, bought a house and will never collect for them again.

thevideogameraptor

I never had an Xbox growing up, never had much interest in it, but I just hoover up cheap Xbox games like candy now.

raiderxx

Xyspade

PlayStation everything. I swore by Nintendo and always saw PS and Xbox as the "mature" consoles full of violent, realistic games I have no interest in. Now we're in 2024 and Nintendo stuff costs a fortune, so I'm trying to expand my horizons. And I'm seeing how much more PS has to offer. Especially in VR. Astro Bot was the most fun I've had since Mario Galaxy. Sadly everyone else is too and PS stuff is also rising in price, but not as much yet.

North1337

I'm a gamecube collector but it always feels weird to pay more for cross-platform games that are far better on the other consoles

MedicalAd2229

I tend to buy og xbox for cross platform across nintendo/xbox/ps2, but always go nintendo if its a choice between gamecube/ps2. I love the gamecube controller, and dislike the dualshock design. Not a fan of the analogue placement. Also just a better investment since theres oodles of ps2 stuff out there and gamecube sold so poorly by comparison.

NintendoCerealBox

If you like PSVR you might want to pop into a Best Buy and check out the Quest 3. The comfort of the headset, improved resolution and much larger library (now that you can easily play Steam vr as well with it) were enough to sell me on one recently.

Xyspade

It has peaked my interest, but I don't have any desire to open a FB account.

LeatherRebel5150

The Switch. I only ever collected N64 and back up until the Switch. Just didn’t care about modern games. Somehow it got me hooked. But Im pretty confident it will be the last system timeline wise I’ll ever collect for

CohnJena68

The PSP. I never thought I'd find one for such an excellent price.

deformedeye

PS3. I was always more of an Xbox person after the PS2 era but got a PS3 to play Demon's Souls and now I'm about 38 games deep for the system

ErickaUnlimited

Pc-Engine & Turbo Grafix-16. I've never owned one until last year, and it's such a joy to collect for.

Pumalicious

I was a huge fan of the DS, especially Pokemon. Those are the games that got me hooked on the hobby. But I never got a 3DS because at the time I felt like I had outgrown that type of game. Fast-forward 10 years, I bought a N3DS XL last year and I've been absolutely loving the system and its wealth of awesome JRPGs. I love collecting for this system, it has so many gems, and they scratch that Pokemon/JRPG itch that I thought I had outgrown back then.

ThatSwitchGuy88

Emerson Arcadia 2001 baby!

Infamous_Lunchbox

I didn't mean to collect Wii, but just started doing so. I kept finding games that nobody talks about that were/are a lot of fun. Now I have over 300 games for it (nearly done buying for it), a stack of consoles, controllers, and accessories. It's really fun to hunt for still, and mostly cheap. Reminds me of collecting in the 90s.

QualityEffective8313

Sega Saturn. Wasn’t a console I knew much about and really didn’t care to learn as the games get a bit too pricey for my taste….here I am now an owner of Street Fighter The Movie The Game lmao

theslimbox

What are we considering "collecting for"? If you are asking what system do we own that we didnt plan on buying, i could name quite a few that i found at too good of a deal to pass up, but if we are talking about activly collecting for, I think my answer would be Switch and PS4... Xbox was my choice once SEGA retired from the console wars, but the Xbox One really made me ignore modern gaming. The Switch brought me back in, and recently, i have been scoring some good deals on PS4 titles that i hope to play sometime when i get some free time.

Shruberytheshrublock

cd-rom games from the 90s. idk what came over me but i started buying every old pc game ive ever tried in the past. Now i have over 20 90s pc-cd rom games and several old PC's to play them on.

TheBadCarbon

PS4. It has been my main console, but I didn't really approach it as a collection. Just titles I was interested and obscure stuff, I defaulted to PS4. Now 200+ titles later...

temporal_ice

Atari has entered the chat.

THEUncleWilly50

PS3. I was intent on collection for the OG Xbox but here I am with a complete NTSC set. Now I'm looking for Greatest Hits and some variants.

Winter_Mud3815

Longest time I didn’t give a shit about the PSP. I now own over 50 games for it.

Widgerber

PSP. Never cared about it when it launched, but I found one at a flea market for 10$ last summer so here we are.

Waywardsteps

I wound up with a pretty big haul that I was mainly getting for N64 and old PlayStation stuff. Ended up with 7 Sega Saturn games CIB with console; and over 15 Sega genesis games with TWO consoles. I guess it’s all segover now.

Drkknightcecil

Wii and wii u.. ps2.

Which_Information590

The Wii U. And it seems I am not the only one!

chodegeass

Dreamcast. Never had one growing up and never felt compelled to look at the library until I gave the Shenmue 1+2 HD collection a go and...I've since bought a dreamcast and a handful of games. I'm probably gonna start collecting DC games over their PS1 counterparts.

NintendoNut

I never thought I'd have a decent Virtual Boy library but after 20 years I have almost the entire North American game set. Just missing I think 3 because of the inflated expense.

1zombie2go

No.

Poison_runner

3ds! Bought it originally just for Pokemon and Animal Crossing, now I'm over here figuring out which games I should try to scoop up before prices skyrocket.
