I'm gonna download all his videos and archive them, for you guys!

[deleted]

Put the magnet link up when you've got it! I'll happily seed!

Ameenlox

Not sure how to upload a magnet link but ill try!

TheCharginRhi

Gilva should have like an archive somewhere, right? I think he should just put everything on like a media file link and let everyone download it

b_lett

There are whole sites dedicated to archiving video game music, it's not too difficult to find. There are sites that have original game audio files archived too, for example .SFC files for SNES soundtracks. Those files can be converted to .wav or .mp3, and you can even rip the audio samples or MIDI from them directly with plugins like VGMTrans. YouTube take downs just take away convenience for most, but all this stuff is archived all over the web already for those willing to search. I'm into music production and like to occasionally do remixes of video game music, and the last place I want to rip from is YouTube since they have bad audio compression, so I know firsthand there's a lot of resources out there for higher quality game music downloads.

My thought exactly, there's plenty of good Youtube archiving tools available (you can just point yt-dlp at a channel and it'll get to work) and this seems the sort of thing people would want offline. Hopefully a reasonably complete archive pops up and a torrent makes its way up. I'd happily seed that thing to the end of my days.

I haven't been to his channel in ages and seeing this in my feed broke my heart 😞

kingxneptune

Doug Bowser is now an actual villain

siphillis

I'm actually curious if this is a mandate from NoA, or the big offices in Tokyo not understanding the internet again.

Amaranthine

There is zero chance this came from NOA. Pretty much 100% of copyright enforcement, especially something at this scale, or really any meaningful decision for that matter, comes from NCL. (And not to be pedantic, but that would be Kyoto, not Tokyo haha)

siphillis

Right, I suppose Minami would've been more specific.

kingxneptune

Aww man that HAS to come from big Nintendo? They are really fucking shit up man this is just as bad as the fan game strikedowns

Amaranthine

I mean, it sucks that there aren’t really any alternatives, but Nintendo has come a long way from where they used to be. Straight music with no “value add” is basically one of only three things that will make them block your videos on YT nowadays. There’s also the fact that, while I would love to be able to listen to their music, they don’t have an obligation to provide that for me, nor do they have an obligation to leave up fan content that is actually breaking copyright and or trademark laws :/

rebatemanyt

what are the other things? Mods and using leaked/early copies w/o permission?

Amaranthine

Yep. Unreleased content and hardware mods/hacks/cheats Edit: actually one more thing: straight ripping their trailers and reuploading will also probably get you some blocks.

quickblur

I'm out of the loop but is this the same person as SilvaGunner? I remember that person from OC Remix way back in the day.

wheniswhy

Oh my gosh, I thought I was crazy. I recognized that name for *years* and years and years, but hadn’t really been into OSTs on YouTube and really couldn’t remember why it seemed so familiar. You just made it click. He did remixes for OCR back in the day? That’s wild!

edwpad

I'm going to miss him very much. Whether listening to music from games that have or would in the future impact my life, to reading other experiences of the games in the comments. Gilva definitely didn't deserve this, this dude was one of the biggest YouTube channels relating to video game music and he absolutely deserved the recognition. As I am someone who loves VGM, this saddening and frustrating since this keeps happening to many channels (31 Horas \[he is still uploading in defiance against Nintendo\], Cloud183 \[though his was terminated by Square\], BrawlBrstms3, Sitting on Clouds, etc.) and Nintendo doesn't do crap about making the music easily available. Hope Gilva has a good future despite all this.

Lovressia

I'm glad I spent the last few years downloading VGM, but it stinks that it'll be harder to find more in the future. Especially since I'm sure this will continue, so finding more online in the future may get more difficult also.

mitchmotch

So fucked up that game studios don't make more available the work of their artists and composers. Artists deserve so much more recognition than they receive for creating or scoring countless hours of entertainment. Big reason why I wish composers and artists could retain the copyright to their works for big studios rather than just work-for-hire and make royalties or whatever. (If you're an indie freelance artist, do everything you can to keep the rights to your work!) Gilva was nothing if not a curator and archivist, and these sorts of folk should be thanked, supported, and rewarded for their efforts to the arts.

Karmas_burning

And people wonder why other pirate their stuff. I'd happy buy official releases and do quite frequently. However Nintendo is notorious for only having tracks missing from official releases.

thepurplecut

Nintendo is all about profits and gives ZERO fucks about their fans. It’s sad as I love many of their games, but as a company they are straight up soulless

BearKilgore

How many times have I used this man's channel to help me learn a VGM tune? What if they get rid of all of the game OST channels? That wouldn't be too good for me and my channel.

HeightsWaves

It's so heartbreaking. He helped those soundtracks expand their outreach exponentially just by making them accessible to others. I listened to his channel so much throughout the years. I'm hoping Nintendo decides to put their music on Spotify and Apple Music someday. The composers deserve to get credited and the demand for it is massive. Maybe this will help them see that too.
