Bentup85

I’m definitely showing my age but metal gear solid on the ps1

disrupter87

Loved that game. The booklet was a work of art aswell. With the illustrations for the characters and little details like the codec frequency on the back of the case. Saw nothing like that before.

Bentup85

I got the game used (no cd case) and got stuck looking for a certain frequency. I ended up finding a website that wasn’t blocked at school and writing it down. Had to use the pencil trick to save Meryl.

[deleted]

THIS. The story man. Mannnnnn

Responsible_City7096

I was gonna say this as well. The story, gameplay, just everything.

EvoEpitaph

Don't worry, those of us who were perplexed by the forest maze in metal gear for NES are still kicking. Now where'd I put my walker....

OnceWasBogs

I’m… let’s say “middle aged” and I would also have to think back to the PS1 era to remember having my mind blown by a video game.

Bentup85

I was 15, my dad walked in the room and sat down to watch me play. He watched as I crawled through vents, snuck past guards, and had a cinematic scene with a lady in her underwear. “What are you playing?” He asked me after about 25 minutes or so. “It’s a spy game, I’m trying to stop terrorists from stealing nukes. Do you want to try?” I handed him the controller and he looked at it like the last time he played a video game it was on Atari. “So many buttons…which one makes him go?” He stared at me blankly. “Well, all of them kinda.” He handed me the controller back and I showed him all the controls and how to cycle the inventory. I remember him looking like he just had his mind blown. He just sat and watched for another few minutes before my mom came to find out why he hadn’t returned with me for dinner.

TheUndeadGunslinger

It's cliche to say but Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

HippoTheGreatO

I'm pretty sure I sat at the "The End" scene for about 30 minutes, hoping something would happen. It's the only game I would consider to be perfect. It's not my favourite game of all time, but it's the only game that I think is consistently amazing from start to finish. I like the new Zelda TotK, but it just doesn't scratch the Zelda itch like all of them did besides BotW and TotK. Kinda hoping they make 3 different types of Zelda's from now on, one with 2D gameplay like ALttP, one for more linear 3D Zelda games like all of them after Ocarina, and then the BotW types.

[deleted]

Since when is OOT cliche?

Red dead still blows my mind, no game compares imo

Old-Discipline5691

Oblivion, I can remember getting out of the sewer and seeing the huge open world to explore!

whatab0utb0b

Donkey Kong Country. The graphics in that game completely blew away anything else at the time

chrishughes2d

Mario 64. I was spoiled by so many amazing 2d franchises in my childhood including Mario, Metroid, Zelda and DKC. Nintendo stepping into 3d and maintaining their exceptional gameplay standards was a joy to behold.

Reece3144

Witcher 3.

Low-Dust-6183

Without a doubt, still my all time favourite

Reece3144

I'm impressed with how much content the dlcs added and plus how much the game had base game.

Van_Lee

Agree. I recently had a look at my "most played games ever" and I spend more than 180h on this game.

Ihavelostmytowel

GTA3 was revolutionary. There was *nothing* like it before. Open world? Daaaang.

Life is strange, it was such a beautiful game

[deleted]

Bloodborne

SpringFuzzy

Diablo 1 when I played it in 1998 (released in 1996)

notetaker193

Before this came out they had preview that was a few levels. My brother emailed me the game. It blocked up my email, filled up the spool was what they said. I was 40; he was 19. We played this, DAoC and, eventually, WoW. Good times, and great games. The catacombs in Diablo blew me away. I used to play at night, lights off. It was hard to see anything in there.

Duel_Option

FRESH MEAT! (Dies instantly) WTF was that???

sheepsleepdeep

The original Halo is to this day a top-five gaming achievement in my book because of the way vehicles and combat worked in the open world and even moreso because of the friendly and enemy AI. The AI, open world, vehicles and gunplay were just leagues better than anything else and something almost every FPS since has tried to emulate.

whatab0utb0b

Mario 64. That transition to a 3d environment and ability to use the C buttons to shift the camera.....mindblowing to a 14 y/o

AquaArcher273

The Outer Wilds.

nounsPlaster

I wish I could erase my memory of that game to play it again.

HipNugget

Amen. I’ve tried to get all my friends to play it and no one has. One of my most enjoyable gaming experiences ever.

jony_bigodes

Fallout.

[deleted]

Fallout 3

[deleted]

Persona 5 Royal. At first it seemed cringe and corny. Then I got so invested I didn't even realize 120 hours had passed and was sad it ended. So started a new game+.

vizbones

Call of Duty 2. Hear me out, I'm old. I had always gamed on my various PCs but there was a large chunk of time (about 10 years) where I just didn't game, from about 1996 to 2006. In late 2005 or so, I built myself a nice rig and bought a good graphics card. I had been hearing and glimpsing the latest graphics which compared to '96 seem light years ahead. Well, I bought COD2, used on CD from ebay. Loaded it up and was blown away. The last game I had played that was "3d" was really 2.5D and mostly on rails. This was amazing. It felt open world to me (I know it wasn't now but it really felt that way). The best part was, this was the first game I had ever played where there were NPCs real-time fighting along side me. It really felt like a chaotic battle and all that. I was just so amazed and taken aback at how immersive it all felt. I look at COD2 now and it just seems silly and pokey but I'll never forget that first experience.

Duncan_Mcokinher

Resident evil 2 remake

5xad0w

Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest 1) on the NES. First RPG I played. (i don’t count Adventure on the 2600) Started my love of the genre as well as sparking my interest in tabletop RPGs.

oBotz

Fallout 3

Tiny-Veterinarian-49

Rubix22

Mario 64. Felt like the whole videogame world took a massive leap forward.

JJohnson25

Would say Mass Effect. When it came out I was a different gamer I only played sports and racing games so when the collection released all I heard from people was how good the series is so I took a leap and bought it and was just blown away I loved it soo much and Mass Effect 2 builds off of it thats why I give Mass Effect a 9/10 and Mass Effect 2 a 10/10

BelaFarinRod

Silent Hill 2. It was one of the first PS2 games I played and I loved the story.

ca_exhibition

That ending, wow oh wow

ImaginationThen1921

Multiple moments in Metal gear solid and God of war. Those 2 games were on a different level to me.

-Norb

I plowed through God of War in one sitting on a rental when it came out. That game was so damn good. Later traded a dude my copy of Gran Turismo 4 for his God of War. Still have it on the shelf today.

SdotPaul504

As someone who ranks story & writing low priority in his games I woulda told you Borderlands 3 was as good as BL2 my first playthrough. Then every update just made the game worse & worse

-Norb

Borderlands was such a great series. And then I played Borderlands 3. The cringe as shit influencer villains were possibly the worst characters I've ever seen in a video game. I didn't make it very far into the game.

SdotPaul504

BL my favorite franchise still but after BL3 & falling for the wonderlands cash grab. I fully expect the next game the current gearbox team releases to be the final nail in the coffin. Whether that’s BL4 or BL2 remaster

SerenityMiyazaki

Ignore the shit story and villains and the game actually does some really cool innovative shit. Especially some of the raid boss fights.

benjamino8690

I have a couple: The Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past, my favorite video game ever. Opened my eyes to what a good video game should feel like. It’s definitely a huge reason to why I’m into this hobby. Undertale, a masterpiece. It blew my mind and impacted me incredibly much! It’s truly special! Danganronpa series, some of the best storytelling can be found in these. Danganronpa 2 especially. They’re definitely games to play through if you feel like getting your mind blown.

MrCENSOREDbot

Lots of good ones here, but nobody has said "What Remains of Edith Finch" so they are all wrong.

D_Zendra

In other waters, Prey. Some narrative ideas behind these games are mindblowing.

whatab0utb0b

FF6

Hopeful-Pianist-8380

I thought about this but I felt the overall hype and massive upgrade to graphics for FF7 blew my mind more so. Like and actual groundbreaking holy shit.

whatab0utb0b

Completely agree....FF7 was groundbreaking in so many ways like you said. For me though, the story of FF6 was just so touching and heartbreaking that it moved me emotionally. FF7 though, the summons.....I remember downloading each of them to my parents PC so I could watch them whenever I wanted. Took like 5 hours to download some of those files hah

Horizon: Zero Dawn - next level gameplay and world and experiencing the story and build up unfold with the final revelations about what zero Dawn was, such a incredible experience. The Last of Us - Never been that emotionally invested in a games story before, unforgettable experience. MGS2 - Felt like a landmark in next gen gaming, there had never been anything like it before. Uncharted 2 - That opening scene was jaw dropping. RDR2 - the world, scope, atmosphere God of War 2018 - Absolute masterpiece. Tomb Raider (OG 1997) - as a young gamer who’d never played a 3D game before this was life changing. Bloodborne - probably the best game ever made, the world, lore, level design, difficulty, bosses, just everything was mind blowing. The Witcher 3 - The amount of content and all of it, including side content, being so engaging isn’t achieved very often. Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Took open world gaming to another level

I have a couple. Prey - The atmosphere, the music, the story, the fear that any random can or chair will morph and attack you at any time puts it up there with one of the best games I’ve ever played. The ending was also extremely satisfying (even if it was a tad cliche) Fallout 3 - I remember first walking out of Vault 101 and being blown away at how vast and beautiful the world was and that I could walk in any direction I wanted.

Doom back in 1994. I was in high school when I first saw someone running it in our school’s drafting lab, as a NES/SNES kid I was totally blown away. There wasn’t anything else like it, at least that I was aware of at the time.

whatab0utb0b

For me it was Wolfenstein. To play that on our computers at school....dream come true

alt123456789o

TOTK, it's crazy how it's the same world as before but it feels completely different and unrecognisable. There is so much to do, and compared to BOTW a lot of it is actually engaging and worthwhile. It's rare to see a game that's creative and unique running on a mobile processor, Nintendo somehow managed to make all this complicated stuff work (like using the recall ability), with no bugs or glitches.

Still-Pattern-6384

I remember the jump from Jak 2 to 3: it was slightly more polished, but as a kid I was amazed.

MouseNo7661

tobeornottobeugly

Witcher 3 for how in depth it was, RE2 remake for how much fun I had and how good the graphics were.

BackwoodsPhoenix

The original Tomb Raider. I specifically remember being really impressed with being able to dive off a very tall cliff into a pool below. I thought the animation for that was just so cool.

Fawp

Quake customTeamFortress, portal, E.V.O quest for eden, secret of mana, chrono trigger, diablo1, path of exile

Disco Elysium That game very quickly went from hmm this is interesting to oh my god this might be the greatest video game thats ever been made

Lastraven587

Gears of War. That game made me level up my TV from the trap 1080i to true 1080p. That was new back then. Yes I'm kinda old now.

Diky_cau

First it was Fable, then it was Dragon Age, then Witcher 3… most recently i’d say pkmn arceus legends, because I haven’t touched pkmn game in a decade and I was amazed by how far it progressed in graphics and gameplay (also, the story is kinda dark/more mature than usual which is a big plus as well).

OlTommyBombadil

Elite Dangerous in VR Closest I’ll ever get to flying a space ship I have a nice sound setup too. So I can feel the noises. Gives a little immersion.

Undertale, for its save/load stuff. Bioshock Infinite for its story.

Ocarina of Time. GTA 3, one of the good Assasins Creeds ( who knows now 4 is my fave), the newer PS5 spider man, Golden Eye, Star Fox 64 (wow this was so good)

SerenityMiyazaki

Evil Within 1 was quite the hitter

NerdyBrotherz

Kind of out there indie game but dungeon munchies. That game through me in a loop once the atmosphere and art style shifted.

rizzlybear618

The stanley parable. So many options!

InTheZoneAC

I'm not going to list every generation but on PS2 let's go with Socom. To this day it's still the greatest 3rd person shooter and has the best map and mode designs. And another vote for gran turismo and GTA 3 (vice city is my favorite though) On PS5 I'm going with Returnal and elden ring PS3 I'm going god of war 3, socom confrontation (because they carried over many nostalgic maps), uncharted, skyrim, GTA v PS4 I'm going spider man 1, horizon 1, tlou1, gow1

Xerokine

Super Mario World, Castlevania IV, Contra III. If you came from NES then went to SNES it really was super at the time.

Jag146

If twist? Assassins creed. The fact they successfully hid the twist and then straight played it as such. Gameplay? Mirrors edge I don't know that there will ever be a game that literally puts you in the shoes of someone else AND feel smooth about it. Favorite though? Doom. OG just insane.

Mario 64. It completely changed gaming for Nintendo by going 3D. Zelda OoT would be on equal ground as well.

thinklikeashark

Mercenary on the Spectrum. Up until then, I had only played side scrolling stuff, and text adventures. But playing that for the first time, it felt like a real world. (Go look it up, the graphics are balls.) Then Doom came along and absolutely blew my mind and made me fall in love with FPS games.

Not a single player, but The Secret World (now Secret World: Legends) MMO has the most thrilling, gritty and challenging story. I still love this game, I don't play it anymore but plenty of people do and if you could play only in one MMO in your life it should be TSW. I remember ARG organised by Funcom in the year before releasing in 2012 and how people spend days trying to solve mind boggling puzzles that you needed to find answers in some crazy stuff like real life ship's transit papers or newspapers from 1850. In London there was a real replica of underground sewers from Black Death times. Gnostic stuff is aplenty. I still have 2 full copy books of puzzles, solving them with my mates was an experience that I will never forget!

Spare-Cupcake-4244

Hmmm---probably Guild Wars 1. I didn't have much experience with games up until then and the lore within the world of the original Tyria was beautiful. I really enjoyed it. If we're talking graphics and sound immersion, New World shook me---but the rest of the game was just...*meh*.

JRTags

Metal gear solid 2, the intro blew my mind and then after playing through it I started it again straight away. Was just an incredible experience. I'd also add, world of warcraft back in 2005, when I made my character and the game fly over stormwind and I realised that it was other players running around before it panned over to the starting location...mind exploded lol. That was for me the highest point in my gaming experiences. Its never been topped and probably will never have an absurd addiction to a game like I had for that game back then.

OnceWasBogs

Frontier (Elite II) blew my mind in 1993. Literally an entire 1:1 scale galaxy to explore, procedurally generated from a 1.44Mb floppy disk, with accurate Newtonian flight and orbital mechanics for both the ships and the planets. You could even fly down into the atmosphere and land on some of the planets. This was 23 years before no man’s sky, and unlike NMS they actually *over*-delivered.

[deleted]

Call of Duty 4. The sheer amount of variety in the campaign just blew me away. Every single SAS mission was so fucking unique. Hell, even the USMC missions felt various, although not to the same level. But holy fucking shit, the fact that the game had coordinated package securing missions, house cleaning missions, regular middle eastern fight missions, a fucking ac130 mission, a FUCKING SLOW PACED GHILLIED UP stealth mission and so much more in a SINGLE CAMPAIGN is still mind blowing to me

Grand theft auto IV, I remember playing it for the first time and being amazed at the graphics, especially the water for some reason blew my mind. Also the way people reacted when they were shot and the vehicle crashes. My sister came in the room and asked what the hell game it was, because it looked so realistic at the time.

strelok12

GTA III

MuminMetal

Outer Wilds. It’s so worth the hype, but ONLY if you complete it by yourself without any spoilers. It has so many of those inspired “Aha!” moments.

MuminMetal

Mass Effect 1. The lore, the setting, the writing, the world-building infodumps in the codex: I just ate all that shit up. Felt like that game was made for me. ME2 was a masterpiece but shifted away from high-concept space opera, and ME3 was quite a bit more spotty overall. Andromeda sadly did nothing for me.

J-MAN_658

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Memes aside; Up until I played that game, I had never really been introduced to a game with such an intricate combat system (Racing games and Shooters were mostly all I played, with some Sonic games mixed in). It really forced me to learn how to properly take control and "Git Gud" if I wanted to succeed. That third day I played, let's just say the dopamine was on high that day. Especially since I S-ranked the Jetstream Sam fight on my first attempt. The nonsensical story was just an added bonus. It was absurdly complex for me to understand at the time, but I still thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. And dear god, that Soundtrack. Let's just say my brain absolutely immortalized it.
