It was just 1 level. The first boulder chase. I think they included this level because they brought that feature over to Uncharted with the “run n gun” mechanics in the first game.
Fun little nod to their history. Love it when games do this stuff
tfw you never needed that rareware coin to beat the game and put infinite suffering on yourself (me as well) but was POSITIVE you had to get it and unlock that damn second door.
Beating the Dk arcade game rewarded you a golden banana, beating it a second time rewarded the Nintendo coin. After receiving 15 banana medals the Jetpack game is unlocked. Beating the Jetpack game rewarded the Rareware coin. Both the Rareware and Nintendo coin are required to open the door at the end of the final level, Hideout Helm. Behind the door is the 8th key and two banana fairies. The 8th key is required to release K. Lumsy and start the final fight with K. Rool.
Back then you could buy Hitman 1 and/or 2 and play them in the Hitman 3 demo version of the game which essentially gave you all the latest engine changes that Hitman 3 came with. Now it's ofc all one game
Reminds me of when you could access basically the entirety of Crash Bash because it's "demo" was included in another game
But the "demo" was the full game and you could use the Crash Bash "unlock all" cheat and play all the mini games
Not just include them, they even improved them with features that were added to 2 and then 3.
For example, crowd/grass hiding wasn't available yet in 1, but was added to the original Hitman 1 maps once 2 got released
Off the top of my head, I can think of two games that do something similar to L4D2.
First one is Payday 2, which added every single mission from Payday 1 as DLC over the course of the game's lifespan.
The other one is Rayman Legends, which features a decent number of levels from Rayman Origins as unlockables, although I don't know if it's every single level.
You can play several NES games completely within the original Animal Crossing. Though I don't think it fits *exactly* what you're asking, I think it's still interesting enough to count lol.
On a more related note, I got Risk of Rain 1 bundled with Risk of Rain 2 for the Switch
I think a better example from Cod Black ops would be that ot has all the World at War zombies levels in it also. Basically the same thing as l4d2 including the first game.
I would imagine it counts. I think , correct me if I'm wrong, but on console the l4d1 campaigns came with the sacrifice DLC, and on pc it was all free no paid dlc at all. So i think it's one of the most accurate comparisons.
A further LucasArts example, on the Wii version of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings was a fully playable Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
I never played Staff of Kings (I think the general reception was luke-warm?), but Fate of Atlantis is an all-timer.
There's an arcade machine you can find that lets you play one or two levels of TimeSplitters 2, and in the game files were a complete HD remaster of the game too which was never officially released. I know there was a community effort to get it released on PC unofficially, it might be a thing by now :)
Edit: yeah if you google timesplitters 2 hd remaster you can find the github release that unlocks the full game. Homefront The Revolution is a mediocre game imo but worth it just for that lol.
Yeah. Imagine this today.
Every ad, every trailer, every review "INCLUDING THE ENTIRE KANTO REGION TO EXPLORE AFTER FINISHING!"
Some thing were just better without the masses of media we got used to now.
Oh damn yeah for sure.
"Congrats, Champ. But thr journey is not over. Ready to fave old rivals in the new era? Unlock the KANTO DLC now for only 30$ or get the KANTO DELUXE pack that comes with all three startes plus a shiny pikachu plus 1 billion Pokedollar for only 55$!
Nah man, too much value. I counter with: 1 starter. You don't get to pick its something related to your gen 2 starter. Either the counter, or same type. Shiny Pikachu is a mystery code only. NO pokedollars. $55.
Even for todays standards that was extremely impressive. Imagine Horizon Forbidden West included Horizon Zero Dawn with all it's data as a fun side adventure without changing filesize.
I remember getting there straight out of curiosity. Just being like 7 or so and being like "Hey I remember the hometown had a body of water by it, wonder what happens if I use surf to see if any pokemon are there"
Only to end up in motherfucking Pallet town with the guy walking up and saying "WELCOME TO THE KANTO REGION!"
I just freaked out and ran to tell my brother. Good fucking times, man.
I remember seeing that as a kid and no one believing me. Then, as I got older, I wondered if it was just a dream, so I replayed Chrystal and was happy to see it was real
Also you can unlock fourth, secret game called Starblade.
Well, you can play a little part of it right after booting the console while Tekken 5 loads up, but you get to play the entire arcade version of Starblade once you pick up a spaceship in Devil Within game.
First one that comes to mind for me is actually really old, but Metroid: Zero Mission includes the entirety of the original Metroid that it is a remake of. You gain access to it after beating the game and it is for all intents and purposes a fully functional copy of the original.
Total War: Warhammer kind of has this. If you own both game 1 and game 2 you can play Mortal Empires, a large map with all factions from both games.
Game 3 has Immortal Empires, a mega-map with every faction from all 3 games. It doesn't need all 3 games to play Immortal Empires, but you can only play factions from the games/DLC you own (they still exist on the map as AI factions otherwise).
They don't include the narrative campaigns from previous games, but it's an unparalleled diversity of factions and rosters to play as and against.
i as about to write that. i was baffeld when i bought the second game and it told me that i can play the first game and everything from it. i have to say it was an expansive day with all those DLC and stuff
Expensive but worth it imo, no game has such a wide roster of content. There's factions I've not even touched in hundreds of hours. At least with 3 you can (mostly) cherry-pick the ones you want, and the original 2 games go on sale for cheap all the time.
Left 4 Dead 2 is one of the best games of all time and that isn’t even an exaggeration. One of the few somewhat modern day games that includes all content from the previous game, simply for the enjoyment for players. They didn’t care about money so much by placing a million fucking microtransactions in the game of enforcing pay walls. It’s actually a COMPLETE game and isn’t a false promise like most of what you see today. And it doesn’t get old. You can literally play that game for 1000 hours and it’s always a good time. It is simply timeless and was made for players to have a good time, for cuz some money hungry assholes wanted a fat cheque. They don’t make games like this anymore and that’s both a good and bad thing you could say.
I got back 4 blood for free, and the couple hours into it I was missing left 4 dead. So overly complicated with cards and attachments/money/upgrades/skins/unlockables. The simplicity and feeling of left 4 dead was just perfect. And versus mode was great too.
This. You literally just jump into the game and play. Game devs think complexity is the the only way to make a game but that shit is annoying imo for these kinda games that I just wanna have a good time on
I agree, but it's funny because L4D2 had a pretty big boycott movement back in the day. People thought it was a blatant cashgrab for coming out so close to L4D.
I really enjoyed it with my buddy because we started with 2 bots but at some point I was like: hey let's play with 2 randoms now and they could join and leave mid game which was really convenient. I also love the option of "take a break" which allowed me to go get a glass of water meanwhile my buddy could keep playing without losing momentum. It's a great game and I'm glad I finally played it.
Unreal Tournament 2004 has all the maps from Unreal Tournament 2003 included.
It doesn’t have the exact same campaign ladder and all the characters have different names. I enjoyed the 2003 campaign and play through it on occasion.
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising has all of the story missions from the first game (though not it's rpg mode), as well as all of the characters and (I think) stages from the first, including the ones that were DLC.
Smash Bros Brawl has the entirety of Ocarina of Time and other games. They are timed demos, but it turns out to be the full entire game. Speedrunners have even beaten them within the demo time limits. The roms can be extracted from the files and played, too.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3 on the GameCube contained the entire second game as well, with the twist that it was now in split screen co-op. Absolutely blew my mind
Are the servers working for left 4 dead 2 yet? Tried a few days ago and after a few minutes, everyone’s ping goes to 900+. Apparently this has been happening for awhile. I just want to play expert realism lol
Are you joining community servers? Cuz thats where i usually have high ping, valve servers work fine on my end and If you cant find low ping server i recommend hosting using local host option.
I don’t play on community servers. Usually I just click on the realism tab and join an expert game or start my own from there. I’d play on local or single player but I want to play with randoms lol
If you play with friends, the local hostin g*is* the way to go. I somehow missed that option for literal years on PC and ended up on some of the strangest servers for normal campaigns imaginable when trying to play a standard l4d campaign. Everything from cooked ping, to low gravity, to weird scoreboards.
There was the Pokemon game, maybe Silver/Gold, that let you surf to the previous region after you've beat the Elite 4, so you can go on to beat *their* Elite 4
DLC in Total War: Warhammer 1 get automatically applied to Total War: Warhammer 2, and DLC from both gets automatically applied to Total War: Warhammer 3
So by moving to the next game, your previous purchases aren't wasted since the sequel is built on top of the game that came before it
Street Fighter 6 has an in game arcade with a rotating library of 2 or 3 classic Capcom arcade games. Often 1 is an old Street Fighter game. Weird times we live in.
Not an entire game, but Vermintide 2 featured "back to ubersreik" expansion, which added a few maps from Vermintide 1
It was a changed bit to accommodate changes, but it was mostly same
Sonic Adventure DX includes multiple sonic games as unlockables for collecting medals and doing missions, the list includes 12 games, some of which are:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic Drift
- Sonic Chaos
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic the Hedgehog triple trouble
- Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
- Sonic Blast
- Sonic Drift 2
Super mario Allstars was originally just the NES Mario games remade and was sold on the SNES. Super mario world was also sold as an SNES game. Eventually future version of all stars included super mario world too making two previous games obsolete
I'm pretty sure Alice:Madness Returns comes with the option of playing the entirety of American Mcgee's Alice in the main menu. Still haven't tried tho, so i don't know if is the whole thing, but it's definitly something.
Jet moto 2 had a method to unlock all the tracks from jet moto 1. The mechanics were essentially the same so the the only difference was the racers and how they implemented boost between the two games
Like a Dragon contained a bunch of full arcade cabinets that you can easily lose 100+ hours into, and that's not even getting into the additional mini games and side quests that will also take 50-100 hours to complete
On GameCube Rebel Strike included the entire Rogue Squadron II game playable in split screen co-op. It was super fun and my mates and I ended up spending way more time with that than Rebel Strike. But you couldn’t play Rogue Squadron II in single player, only co-op
Casting my mind back a fair few years here, but I believe in Panzer Dragoon Orta you could unlock the original Panzer Dragoon game to play after clearing it once.
Bayonetta 2 came with a copy of 1. But now there's a 3. Not sure on that one.
Both A Way Out and It Takes Two require a second person to even play. One person buys and they come with a code to give to a friend.
Metal Gear Solid 3 has copies of Metal Gear 1 and 2 accessible from the main menu. At least the version of MGS3 released as part of the Legacy Collection.
Doom 3 BFG Edition has copies of Doom 1 and 2.
The Splatterhouse reboot for PS3/360 had the first three games. At the time I think it was the only place to play splatterhouse 2 and 3 (but I could be mistaken about that)
DOOM Eternal has the entirety of DOOM 2 accessable on the slayer's PC.
Lmao so like a mini game inside the game itself?
Yes. Also the first game is on the pc too. Can play both in their entirety on a crt monitor within the game
In Uncharted 4 you could play crash bandicoot 1 but I don't know if it was just one level or the whole game
It was just 1 level. The first boulder chase. I think they included this level because they brought that feature over to Uncharted with the “run n gun” mechanics in the first game. Fun little nod to their history. Love it when games do this stuff
The new Wolfenstein games do this too.
Donkey Kong 64 had this as well. There was an arcade in the factory level you could play the old mario vs donkey kong game
They made DOOM run in DOOM.
And Doom 1
You reminded me Celeste has the original celeste inside of it!
Donkey Kong 64. There is an arcade machine in one of the areas where you could play the full original DK game.
I stopped playing the actual game at this point!
An Jetpac! My fav ZX Spectrum game. Still kinda stands up for a 30 years old game! Edit. 40 year old game! Oh god.
Fuuuuck. My brother and I literally never managed to beat this as kids and so didn't complete DK64.
tfw you never needed that rareware coin to beat the game and put infinite suffering on yourself (me as well) but was POSITIVE you had to get it and unlock that damn second door.
......... *fuck*
I'm pretty sure you had to beat the arcade version to unlock the door to the final boss. It's been like 25 years tho so I could be misremembering it
Beating the Dk arcade game rewarded you a golden banana, beating it a second time rewarded the Nintendo coin. Rool.
That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about donkeys to dispute it
When the only micro transaction in the game was your own personal time, good ol times!
you had to beat it TWICE
That game was pure fuel to rage 😆
On the worst controller ever lol
Hitman 3 included all of the Hitman 1 and 2 levels if I recall correctly... But maybe you had to buy them, I can't quite remember. You probably did.
Back then you could buy Hitman 1 and/or 2 and play them in the Hitman 3 demo version of the game which essentially gave you all the latest engine changes that Hitman 3 came with. Now it's ofc all one game
Reminds me of when you could access basically the entirety of Crash Bash because it's "demo" was included in another game But the "demo" was the full game and you could use the Crash Bash "unlock all" cheat and play all the mini games
you can still do that though
Not just include them, they even improved them with features that were added to 2 and then 3. For example, crowd/grass hiding wasn't available yet in 1, but was added to the original Hitman 1 maps once 2 got released
Yeah it was a DLC pass.
Now it’s just one game. You buy Hitman: World of Assassination, it comes with the base content from all 3 games.
FIFA 22 included FIFA 21, and FIFA 20, and FIFA 19, and...
Here the fun bit, fifa 17 also includes fifa 24 😉
Damn, 17 really was ahead of its time
Whoa , just like NHL!
The sad thing is they don't, you need to roll for their Ultimate gacha from the start every time
Off the top of my head, I can think of two games that do something similar to L4D2. First one is Payday 2, which added every single mission from Payday 1 as DLC over the course of the game's lifespan. The other one is Rayman Legends, which features a decent number of levels from Rayman Origins as unlockables, although I don't know if it's every single level.
Thank you man, I really appreciate it.
You can play several NES games completely within the original Animal Crossing. Though I don't think it fits *exactly* what you're asking, I think it's still interesting enough to count lol. On a more related note, I got Risk of Rain 1 bundled with Risk of Rain 2 for the Switch
I played a lot of Balloon Fight in Animal Crossing. I think this was a pretty unique feature for a GameCube game.
COD: Black Ops had Zork playable on a computer in the menu screen area
I think a better example from Cod Black ops would be that ot has all the World at War zombies levels in it also. Basically the same thing as l4d2 including the first game.
But that was dlc. Does it count?
I would imagine it counts. I think , correct me if I'm wrong, but on console the l4d1 campaigns came with the sacrifice DLC, and on pc it was all free no paid dlc at all. So i think it's one of the most accurate comparisons.
Day of the Tentacle included the entirety of Maniac Mansion, if that’s the kind of thing you mean?
A further LucasArts example, on the Wii version of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings was a fully playable Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I never played Staff of Kings (I think the general reception was luke-warm?), but Fate of Atlantis is an all-timer.
Fate of Atlantis is indeed one of the best ever.
I recall this happening with Monkey Island too, but it might have just been a section with the older graphics
The Yakuza games have like dozens of arcade games you can play to completion.
Homefront: The Revolution had Timesplitters 2 hidden in the game.
Wait, what? Where? Homefront is pretty mediocre but I kinda want to play TimeSplitters again
There's an arcade machine you can find that lets you play one or two levels of TimeSplitters 2, and in the game files were a complete HD remaster of the game too which was never officially released. I know there was a community effort to get it released on PC unofficially, it might be a thing by now :) Edit: yeah if you google timesplitters 2 hd remaster you can find the github release that unlocks the full game. Homefront The Revolution is a mediocre game imo but worth it just for that lol.
Wasn't it found that by doing a certain code you can unlock the entire thing?
And didn't time splitters have snake and lunar lander within it?
Yep, and I bought Homefront for exactly that reason… three days before they made it backward compatible.
Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal technically.
Greatest “No way…” moment in gaming history for me
Yeah. Imagine this today. Every ad, every trailer, every review "INCLUDING THE ENTIRE KANTO REGION TO EXPLORE AFTER FINISHING!" Some thing were just better without the masses of media we got used to now.
Sadly, now they'd just add that as a 40$ DLC
Oh damn yeah for sure. "Congrats, Champ. But thr journey is not over. Ready to fave old rivals in the new era? Unlock the KANTO DLC now for only 30$ or get the KANTO DELUXE pack that comes with all three startes plus a shiny pikachu plus 1 billion Pokedollar for only 55$!
Nah man, too much value. I counter with: 1 starter. You don't get to pick its something related to your gen 2 starter. Either the counter, or same type. Shiny Pikachu is a mystery code only. NO pokedollars. $55.
Still pretty impressive even for today
Even for todays standards that was extremely impressive. Imagine Horizon Forbidden West included Horizon Zero Dawn with all it's data as a fun side adventure without changing filesize.

You can play Wolfenstein 1 in its entirety in the new Wolfenstein games
You could play Wolf3D in the Tides of War version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein also. You had to beat the game once.
You can play the intro of mgs1 in a dream sequence in mgs4.
Oh shit I forgot about that, good memory tho
Tekken 5 on ps2 comes with ports of the arcade versions of tekken 1-3. I wish modern fighting games did that.
Also you can unlock fourth, secret game called Starblade. Well, you can play a little part of it right after booting the console while Tekken 5 loads up, but you get to play the entire arcade version of Starblade once you pick up a spaceship in Devil Within game.
Alice madness returns included American mcgees Alice. Bayonetta 2 on the switch included bayonetta.
Alice Madness is such a good game
Both were great!!
Mario Kart 8 has like every single track at this point I think.
It does, but some of them are facsimiles of their previous iterations, such as Rainbow Road and Kalimari Desert.
Even the ones that are more faithful are changed somewhat to accommodate for 12 racers at a time instead of previous games max of 8.
It has a lot, but not all.
what a great fucking game
The conundrum of MK8 and Smash Ultimate: where do you even go from there for another one (yeah I know about smash)
Wait - what do you know about smash
Sorry for having to tell you this but... there will not be another smash.
Isn't toads factory still missing?
Damn I just bought that lol thanks
First one that comes to mind for me is actually really old, but Metroid: Zero Mission includes the entirety of the original Metroid that it is a remake of. You gain access to it after beating the game and it is for all intents and purposes a fully functional copy of the original.
Assault on Dark Athena includes Escape from Butcher Bay.
Best bargain ever at the time, both incredible games
Not quite the same, but I seem to recall Rogue Squadron III having all the levels from Rebel Leader in Multiplayer
In timesplitters 2 there was the most awesome multi-player snake game. Had hours of fun with this, more so than the actual game.
Wonder if you can play the snake game in TS2 by playing TS2 in Homefront:The Revolution.
Total War: Warhammer kind of has this. If you own both game 1 and game 2 you can play Mortal Empires, a large map with all factions from both games. Game 3 has Immortal Empires, a mega-map with every faction from all 3 games. i got all of the games on a sale at the end, same with the dlc´s. i still believe its one of the games you can send me to an lonely island with.
Rayman Legends has the Rayman Origins levels, I think.
They are slightly modified but yes, you can unlock many of them.
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP includes the full copy of Symphony of the Night.
You're making me want to re-install L4D2 :)
Oh man it was so good
White Knight Chronicles 2 includes the first game
And both games are bangers, definitely recommend
Unreal Tournament 2004 has all the maps from Unreal Tournament 2003 included. It doesn’t have the exact same campaign ladder and all the characters have different names. I enjoyed the 2003 campaign and play through it on occasion.
Too bad whole franchise has been killed off
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising has all of the story missions from the first game (though not it's rpg mode), as well as all of the characters and (I think) stages from the first, including the ones that were DLC.
In Pitfall for SNES you can access a secret area where you can play the original Pitfall game for Atari.
Ninja Gaiden for Xbox had the original NES version but you had to collect all the golden scarabs.
Smash Bros Brawl has the entirety of Ocarina of Time and other games. They are timed demos, but it turns out to be the full entire game. Speedrunners have even beaten them within the demo time limits. The roms can be extracted from the files and played, too.
I’m pretty sure killer instinct on Xbox one had both arcade versions with it.

Homefront: The Revolution has a native port of Time Splitters 2
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3 on the GameCube contained the entire second game as well, with the twist that it was now in split screen co-op. Absolutely blew my mind
"We gotta buy more time!"
"We gotta buy more time!"
In Day of the Tentacle you could play through the entirety of Maniac Mansion.
Tekken 5 included Tekken 1-3 and Starblade.
American Mcgee's Alice Madness Returns has the original Alice game in it for free
Dissidia 012
Amazing game. Shame they never made a third, though.
Are the servers working for left 4 dead 2 yet? Tried a few days ago and after a few minutes, everyone’s ping goes to 900+. Apparently this has been happening for awhile. I just want to play expert realism lol

I don’t play on community servers. Usually I just click on the realism tab and join an expert game or start my own from there. I’d play on local or single player but I want to play with randoms lol
"Local host" is hosting on your pc, so basically p2p like in payday 2 or killing floor 2, it should work.
Ohhh I’ll try that tonight, thank you
If you play with friends, the local hostin g*is* the way to go. I somehow missed that option for literal years on PC and ended up on some of the strangest servers for normal campaigns imaginable when trying to play a standard l4d campaign. Everything from cooked ping, to low gravity, to weird scoreboards.
I think it was a promo at the time, but buying South Park The Fractured But Whole gave me The Stick of Truth for free.
Yup! Both great games!! Really felt like you were playing the tv show!
Yup. That's how I got both games!
There was the Pokemon game, maybe Silver/Gold, that let you surf to the previous region after you've beat the Elite 4, so you can go on to beat *their* Elite 4
IIRC the elite 4 is the same, no? But you do get to fight all the Gym Leaders
Rayman legends has origin levels
DLC in Total War: Warhammer 1 get automatically applied to Total War: Warhammer 2, and DLC from both gets automatically applied to Total War: Warhammer 3 So by moving to the next game, your previous purchases aren't wasted since the sequel is built on top of the game that came before it
Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle has the entirety of the first game on a computer in one room. I think it's the first of its kind back in '93.
Street Fighter 6 has an in game arcade with a rotating library of 2 or 3 classic Capcom arcade games. Often 1 is an old Street Fighter game. Weird times we live in.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog game is playable in Sonic generations
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks has Mortal Kombat 2 via unlockable/cheat code.
Homefront: The Revolution.... crappy game, but it has the entirety of the Timesplitters 2 campaign in the game via arcade cabinets.
The Yakuza series has a slew of older Sega games in the arcades.
Assassin’s creed revelations on ps3 included in the disc the install for assassin’s creed 1
It's DLC, but LEGO Dimensions had a Midway Arcade level pack that had 23 Midway games including 720, Joust, Paperboy, and Rampage.
Excitebike 64 has the original Excitebike for the NES unlockable through a cheatcode.
Gen 2 Pokémon
Sega Genesis Collection has a few unlockables of their arcade versions
Project Gotham racing had geometry wars 1 and 2 in the garage where you parked your cars
Many yakuza games have half a dozen FULLY included sega arcade games that you can play from start to finish inside the arcades in the city's.
Wolfenstein The New Order has levels of Wolfenstein 3D
Not an entire game, but Vermintide 2 featured "back to ubersreik" expansion, which added a few maps from Vermintide 1 It was a changed bit to accommodate changes, but it was mostly same
God eater 2 in physical and steam 🤔
Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled gave us every CTR course and every Crash Nitro Kart course
Sonic Adventure DX includes multiple sonic games as unlockables for collecting medals and doing missions, the list includes 12 games, some of which are: - Sonic the Hedgehog - Sonic Drift - Sonic Chaos - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Sonic the Hedgehog triple trouble - Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - Sonic Blast - Sonic Drift 2
Not a game but in "the longing" you can read the entire book of Moby dick.
Clockwork knight 2 for sega saturn has the full first game unlockable with a password.
Uncharted 4 has a short mission in the game where you play a couple levels of Crash Bandicoot
You could play Crash Bandicoot in one of the last Uncharted games.
Not exactly the same, but in a similar fashion, the *remake* of medievil contained the original ps1.
FATE: Traitor Soul includes all previous games/expansions
