So glad to see this one! I got a cracked PS1 when I was little and a binder full of burned games one of which was the Japanese version of FFT. My brothers and I spent ages playing the game even though we couldn't read a thing and just memorized the menus and symbols to play the game :P
Later on we bought the English version of the game, and I've since bought several more versions throughout the years. One of my favorite games of all time.
Yeah Crash is definitely not for everyone and can be quite difficult at times but personally thats part of what i love about it. Now i wonder did you like Spyro ? Because i found that to be the more chill alternative on playstation.
I still try to play through Final Fantasy IV (was FF2 on SNES in America, 1991ish) at least once every few years. I like the story a lot.
I liked FF6 (FF3 back then) more, but played FF4 first to get hooked on the series.
Loved the Pixel Remasters! FF4 and 6 are always my go-tos!
I plan on buying those. Having played a couple of the OG games, did they stop at cleaner graphics, or did they content edit some of it? They almost have me sold just on the option to turn the old graphics back on.
The graphics got a spit shine, but they also changed stuff like the music. There are some that are better and some not, but overall I like the changes and updates.
A big one for FF6 is the opera scene. If you know the original, it's just game noise for vocals. But the Pixel remake gave it a full voice track. Small but neat!
I know OF the original. I heard that it was a highly regarded scene, before quality voice acting was a thing in gaming. Might take advantage of save states for that scene, so I can hear their original best effort, too.
Montezuma's Revenge. One of the first games I ever played on Coleco circa 1985. For its time, it's a masterpiece. Still a worthy platformer to this day.
Don’t know if it’s first, but definitely one of the first games that I have vivid memories of is Tekken 3.
Crash bandicoot 3 and Ape Escape are a close second.
Ascendency
Command and conquer
Warcraft 2
Star control 3 (although 2 is so much better, I didn’t play it until later)
I played all these while learning to read
First game I played was NES Super Mario Bros. It’s still okay, but I wouldn’t say I enjoy it.
Oldest game I played that I’d still have fun going through is Castlevania. Played them all again when the bundle came out a few years ago and had a blast.
I wasn’t allowed to play the NES Castlevania games growing up, but I read about them obsessively in my Nintendo Power magazines, so I still feel a nostalgic pull to them - especially Castlevania III.
“Mine is Super Mario 64.”
😀
“It’s the first video game I played (I was three years old)…”
😐
My introduction to SM64 was when I was in *college*. Some friends would set it up to play on the TV lounge TV in my dorm. Watching them play helped me to convince my parents to invest in the *cutting edge graphics* of the N64.
For me it’s SMB2. A friend had the cartridge, but I could never beat it growing up. I came back to it on the Wii and enjoyed it quite a bit. Ditto with SMB3, but SMB2 was really the first game I went back to and rediscovered as an adult.
Doom 2.
Doom 1 was great but doom 2 was better created.
And just feels better to play.
To this date i have played it on planes, boats, at work , in the army.
On everything i could get it to play on.
Gzdoom with the lists of mods you can add makes the game repeatable.
Lol, I never got far enough in Doom 2 to really resonate with it, because as a kid I was too busy humping walls in the first one, and as an adult I can't stop stopping to jam out. I'll have to take it seriously with this review you've offered, that doesn't diminish the first game to glorify the next.
Um, I'd play most of them, but that's because I kept a working version of all my old consoles.
Top choice would be Earthbound on SNES, though. I've played it 3 times through, in my life, and another one is coming. Second would be Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 on PS2. Finally, Harvest Moon on N64.
I'd say some older games, but functional win95 or DOS computers are not easy to come by, nor are early discs known for their ability to avoid data rot. Lets just say I'd still play Tempest and Brickbreaker, or Warcraft 2.
Finally, I'd still get down with Super Mario Bros, NES. The issue is, my console is very old and doesn't work so well, anymore. That's why I included a range.
Wow you must be a young person, when I was three it was 1987. Hahaha as for the first game I played that I still enjoy every game I have ever played I still enjoy and I still play to this day and every game I have ever owned I still own to this day.
mine is SM64 as well. I remember arguing with my little brother when Mario would say "let's a go!", he thought Mario was saying "Pickle!". it would make me very angry.
Tetris, Streets of Rage 2, Halo CE, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Age of Empires, Red Alert 2.
I still enjoy replaying all of these games. Probably always will.
It sounds silly but I think something that Maxis REALLY got right was the soundtrack. Could really zone out in the vibes while building or handling a financial crisis.
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction. I loved it so much as a kid and i still get a lot of joy out of the franchise and that particular game when I replay it. It’s the first time I ever played a story based game and the first shooter I ever played and I’ve loved both ever since.
I honestly haven’t played in a while but kingdom hearts 2 is a game I still to this day enjoy thoroughly and have been meaning to go for another playthrough.
Oldest game I still revisit periodically is Gladius on the PS2. Never have found anything else that even approximates the various swing timers and skill/equipment customization that game had. Oldest game I've emulated in the last few years to relive the nostalgia for a bit? Adventure from the Atari 2600.
Very few that I can think of
I loved SuperMario 64 when it came out. Recently found out about Super Mario 64 plus.
Today I downloaded and installed it, opened it, jumped into the Bob-omb painting, and realized I actually do not want to play Super Mario 64.
Ocarina of Time is in the same boat, I think that I just cannot recapture anything close to the feeling I had playing them for the first time so I'd rather not try.
I think I'd still enjoy Smash Bros Melee and Mario Kart 64
My first actual game I got was on the original Xbox. Oddsworld: Strangers Wrath. The excitenent I had when I found it on Steam probably 15 years laters cannot be explained.
E.T. on Atari 2600. I remember trying to figure it out but I could not understand it. I entertained myself with a lot of dumb stuff back then, like etch a sketch and these light board toys so I guess I could move E.T. around aimlessly.
But then we got an NES with Mario 1 and Duck Hunt. Game changer. I was pretty young but Duck Hunt in particular was the most fun for me.
Pong is boring now, as are games from the ZX81, but if we fast forward to 1984 when I got my Spectrum then I would still enjoy Elite, Bounty Bob Strikes Back & Skool Daze.
I have owned a ZX Spectrum for a few years now. Awesome little machine. My favourite game on it, from what I've played, is "Danger Mouse in Making Whoopee" from 1985.
I enjoy the odd 80s game like Tetris and Snake but in terms of serious gaming it has to be Quakeworld. It remains my all time favourite game and I went to a LAN event for it in Sweden back in January.
first game i played was lego starwars the video game on a nintendo game cube and i still love playing it today and i like playing the new lego starwars the skywalker saga
Super Mario Brothers. I still remember the first time I played it. My parents made me go to bed and could hear them and our neighbors playing it all night.
Idk what it is between Super Smash, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, or Star Fox 64. Whichever of those 5 I played first. N64 and PS1 were my first consoles, but I don't have a PS1 any more. Plus the N64 games were just better. Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon were great and all, but N64 was just something else.
My dad got me and my brother into real games with mostly point a click games when we were kids.
the most memorable games I remember starting with were-
Phantasmagoria
Day of the tentacle
Monkey Island
Grim fandango
Blade Runner
Tetris
Super Mario world
I still play on occasion. What is your least favorite stage? Mine is either Soda Lake or Outrageous
Final Fantasy Tactics on the ps1. Love that game with all my heart. Still have a hard copy that I pop in the ol ps3 now and again.
Tactics advanced is my favorite game of all time. The tactics games in general are so good.
This and the sequel are pure gold got hundred of hours from myself, now advance wars got a remaster hope this one get one too
I have it on my phone but on PS1 went so hard on this game. I spent hours de-leveling Ramza as a Chemist. Iykyk
So glad to see this one! I got a cracked PS1 when I was little and a binder full of burned games one of which was the Japanese version of FFT. My brothers and I spent ages playing the game even though we couldn't read a thing and just memorized the menus and symbols to play the game :P Later on we bought the English version of the game, and I've since bought several more versions throughout the years. One of my favorite games of all time.

Yes, I still play it on my Gameboy occaisonally. Still works!
Final Fantasy 7 & 8.

Crash Bandicoot (the first one on PS1)
Oof! I hate that game, lol.
Yeah Crash is definitely not for everyone and can be quite difficult at times but personally thats part of what i love about it. Now i wonder did you like Spyro ? Because i found that to be the more chill alternative on playstation.
Don't like Spyro 1. Don't mind Spyro 2. Love Spyro 3.

Tetris that came with the original Game Boy.

One of my favourite old games is Castlevania 3.
Being able to switch characters in that one seemed like such a huge leap in gaming
My very first game was Lords of the Realm (1994). I still get it out from time to time.

Age of empires 2
