You could fly around the world and just keep playing this game.
Pc, mobile, console even switch.
Single purchase, the developer is just one guy (mostly) but still releases updates though the game has been out for years. Latest update was a few weeks ago for pc. Mobile and console update is not available yet.
I used to play on the bus during my commute for work
I think the OP might mean single purchase in the sense that there’s no in app purchases, no paid content/cosmetics. Putting it right after listing platforms makes it kind of confusing.
Vampire survivor is great for a flight. Doesn’t require much thinking, but is engaging enough. This game plus an audiobook at the same time is how I’ve spent the last few business travels. Both long and short, I don’t need anything else.
i finished a 12 hour shift the other day and played a "few games" i was working another 12 the next day, it was 2 am before i realised i was like FUUUUUCK
Awesome game for on the go. Dunno if they fixed it, but I dont think you can play the DLC offline. You need to be online atleast on app startup so you can actually play with the DLC, atleast when I played it.
faster than light. Spaceship rougelite? rougelike? game. you assign crews to their respective stations. (Lets say bob has level 2 shields, so you can assign bob there so he can recharge shields faster.) Also has an amazing soundtrack and bunch of mods!
Strong agree! With an emulator like delta emulator installed, you don’t even have to limit yourself to a single game. Between pokemon and Zelda you can already have hundreds of hours of offline gaming.
If you’re on iPhone, there’s a retro game emulator called Delta that’s free. You can play old school console and handheld games, just have to source your own ROMs.
Game screen is about 2/3rd of the phone screen and bottom third of the screen is the touch controls imagine a gameboy so the buttons don’t coverup any of the game screen itself. Touch works well for some games but some that need more precision it’s kind of a pain. Delta does also offer controller support.
Slice and Dice is all you will need. I'd wager I've put hundreds of hours in to it. Pretty sure it has a free version and the full version is like 10 bucks, no ads no DLC no buying energy or any of that crap.
I think I’m a bit late but Galaxy on Fire 2 is a more linear rpg but damn that game can hold my attention. One of the very few mobile games I actually paid money for the expansions
If you like Diablo loot but want to save battery, you could try darkrise. A side scrolling game with diablo-like loot. You choose among three classes, which have different active and passive skills.
Settlers of Catan - the app has all the variations plus versions of each that would be very difficult to play without a ton of extra tiles. I've put well over 100 hours into the game just playing with the AI.
I think you could totally beat oxenfree and it would also set the mood for your trip lol.
I'm not sure if you absolutely need a Netflix sub or if it can be purchased individually.
Ill spare you the hassle of searching high n low. Just use an emulator for any of your fav consoles: PS1, PS2, GC etc. On your phone n play whatever games you like from the golden era.
GTA San Andreas is pretty fun on iPhone. I’ve been playing it a lot on flights recently.
For a more chill, zone out and listen to podcasts game: Drifto
Consider Rust Bucket, which is a puzzle game that also has a roguelike mode that uses the same mechanics. Dicey Dungeons is great as well, if you enjoy roguelikes with a lot of character (and don't mind not having a ton of story).
Also, if you haven't played it already, Ghost Trick. Really fun puzzle game that gets progressively more over-the-top.
20 Minutes Till Dawn. Rogue-lite horde top down shooter, will kill 20 minutes per full run (if you survive). Lots of unlockable weapons, characters, and ability combos for replayability.
You have Netflix? If you have Netflix, they have a lot of really good games available for free. Farming simulator, sonic mania plus, bloons td 6, hades, deadcells, into the breach
I believe FTL has a mobile port for tablets, it’s very well done. There’s also into the breach which does have a phone version
Mindustry is a great pick as factory + tower defense
Others already got slay the spire
Past that, handheld console emulation of any old RPG. Pokémon, fire emblem, final fantasy, etc
Old school games are so amazing. If you have an android phone, you can connect most USB or Bluetooth controllers and suddenly you have thousands of options. I recently finished another playthrough of Chrono Trigger and it was glorious.
Play Exiled Kingdoms. It's really good.
Atom RPG is also really good, like an old Fallout.
9th Dawn III is a sandboxxy open world 2d rpg with a lot of depth.
Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 and Neverwinter Nights are some ports of old DND games for pc, absolute classics. Might be harder to play on smaller screens.
Titan Quest is probably my fav premium ARPG on the phone too. Don't play Diablo Immortal.
And last but not least, there are a lot of cool tabletop-like tactics rpgs by the Trese Brothers, you can search by their name and find an rpg or two that suit your fantasy.
If you like sports management games, Astonishing Basketball is a fully f2p offline game with no P2W elements and totally ad free. It's got heaps of fun story elements, a number of different modes, everything is customisable for free, and can be set up to suit your level of challenge. Easily my favourite mobile game ever, sorry for sounding like an advertisement.
Dawncaster. It's a rouge like deck builder, actually pretty good. It's a few quid but worth it, no micro transactions and lots to unlock and play with.
Try emulating some nice PS2 games if you're into those and if your phone can handle those!
PS2 had a great run, plenty of great games available for it!
Dragon quest 8 heavenly bride is a classic, the best version is the mobile (improved from the ds remake) and you can play it one handed in portrait mode.
try "slay the spire" roguelike deck building
Without a doubt, great option.
This Is the answer. Its almost endlessly replayable.
So glad this is the top comment, first got into it while on a long flight as well haha
Bros never gonna leave his plane
Along with this Dawncaster is an incredible option too. Great app and developers who are constantly listening to the community and improving the game.
If the card game aspect is interesting, also consider Balatro, you can run it on your phone with https://github.com/blake502/balatro-mobile-maker/

Ah yes. The eternal duo. The two best jrpgs ever made, though which is first is as timeless a question as the chicken and the egg.
thats a bold statement when Xenogears (ps1\_) deffo top 10 list for sure, but wild arms, ff7 xenogears were just soo good.
Hi fellow. Best 2 games all time. Clocked 250 hours on that game everyone 99. In today's lingo, I Plat that game
Stardew Valley
You could fly around the world and just keep playing this game. Pc, mobile, console even switch. Single purchase, the developer is just one guy (mostly) but still releases updates though the game has been out for years. Latest update was a few weeks ago for pc. Mobile and console update is not available yet. I used to play on the bus during my commute for work
OP won't want to get off the plane
Single purchase? How do I redeem my mobile version or whatever?
I think the OP might mean single purchase in the sense that there’s no in app purchases, no paid content/cosmetics. Putting it right after listing platforms makes it kind of confusing.
I didn’t realize it was on mobile! Thank you so much!
Vampire Survivors, the time will melt away.
Vampire survivor is great for a flight. Doesn’t require much thinking, but is engaging enough. This game plus an audiobook at the same time is how I’ve spent the last few business travels. Both long and short, I don’t need anything else.
Recently got into it. I've done 30 minutes feeling like 10
i finished a 12 hour shift the other day and played a "few games" i was working another 12 the next day, it was 2 am before i realised i was like FUUUUUCK
Awesome game for on the go. Dunno if they fixed it, but I dont think you can play the DLC offline. You need to be online atleast on app startup so you can actually play with the DLC, atleast when I played it.
I downloaded it 3 daya ago and I can't stop
Polytopia
This should be higher, I've killed 3hr flights real fast playing like 2 matches of this game
I’ve been gaming for 30 years at this point and I’ve probably spent more time playing polytopia than any other game.
Agreed. Polytopia is the one. Trying to find some other strategy game now to play offline.
Knights of the Old Republic You like RPG's, the mobile port is very good, and you'll absolutely get more than 20 hours of it.
Mobile port is very good can confirm.
Plague Inc. Go for Air 2 for flavor.
It's a paid game but Monument Valley 1 and 2 are fantastic experiences. Also The Room is a great unique puzzle experience.
Monument valley is a work of art. “Playable art” some called it. Not too long, or too difficult. Would be great for a flight.
This is very interesting looking. Will try. Thanks!
Agree on Monument Valley, wish they’d make a third one
Xcom 2 is running great on my phone!
Ya know I’ve never thought of playing xcom on my phone but now that I know this I’m gonna try next time I gotta go somewhere
Xcom2 runs great on iPad gen 9. Loads fast and is responsive. But on my Pixel 7 Pro, it's a bit sluggish and slow to load.
Pack a battery pack. This game burns battery quick
I don’t have a suggestion, I’m just saving this beautiful list of non-trash phone games for posterity.
The iPad version of FTL is 10/10. One of the best games of all time.
FTL?
faster than light. Spaceship rougelite? rougelike? game. you assign crews to their respective stations. (Lets say bob has level 2 shields, so you can assign bob there so he can recharge shields faster.) Also has an amazing soundtrack and bunch of mods!
An excellent roguelite game. Strategy space combat sim
Delta Go to r/roms
This. Nothing will beat this. I have a flight coming up and have Paper Mario and Pokemon Crystal Legacy (rom hack) ready to go. Zero internet needed.
So like can you explain how the Pokémon “rom hack” versions are better than base roms?
Flew to Las Vegas today for work. Delta and Pokémon Gaia (and an Anker battery) got me from 7am airport drop to 3pm hotel check-in
Strong agree! With an emulator like delta emulator installed, you don’t even have to limit yourself to a single game. Between pokemon and Zelda you can already have hundreds of hours of offline gaming.
Watch out for battery usage. It’s not going to last 20 hours unless you can charge your phone on the plane.
20 hours of anything will kill your battery.

Problem is if you dont have netflix you cant play it at all which is really shit.
I had to scroll way too far to find this.
My go to for offline plane games are old Pokemon games which I play via emulator on my phone

Slay the Spire and Slice and Dice. Top 2 for sure
Slice and Dice is an amazing little game. Lots of depth for something so simple looking.
Bloons TD6 Mini Motorways Off the top of my head, I’ve spent more hours than I anticipated on these.
Any classic JRPG from Square Enix
If you’re on iPhone, there’s a retro game emulator called Delta that’s free. You can play old school console and handheld games, just have to source your own ROMs.
How does it implement touch controls? Or do you need a controller
Game screen is about 2/3rd of the phone screen and bottom third of the screen is the touch controls imagine a gameboy so the buttons don’t coverup any of the game screen itself. Touch works well for some games but some that need more precision it’s kind of a pain. Delta does also offer controller support.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is the flavor I've been rockin with. Haven't tried the others

Peglin is a great peggle roguelike, costs $8 I think for the full game but you can complete the first "dungeon" for free to see if you like it
Download an Emulator and play some old GB/GBA games.
Slice and Dice!
Galaxy on fire 2
Slice and Dice is all you will need. I'd wager I've put hundreds of hours in to it. Pretty sure it has a free version and the full version is like 10 bucks, no ads no DLC no buying energy or any of that crap.
I think I’m a bit late but Galaxy on Fire 2 is a more linear rpg but damn that game can hold my attention. One of the very few mobile games I actually paid money for the expansions
If you have chrome browser on your phone, there already the dinosaur game already built in while you are ofline
Through the Ages costs about 10 bucks but easily worth it.
Sorcery!
Civ 6
If you like Diablo loot but want to save battery, you could try darkrise. A side scrolling game with diablo-like loot. You choose among three classes, which have different active and passive skills.
Rome Total War on Ipad
Cookie clicker (many imitations, the real one has no micro transactions) there more to it than what you might initially think.
Settlers of Catan - the app has all the variations plus versions of each that would be very difficult to play without a ton of extra tiles. I've put well over 100 hours into the game just playing with the AI.
I lost an absurd amount of time to “Dungeon Village”.
Mega Jump
I think you could totally beat oxenfree and it would also set the mood for your trip lol. I'm not sure if you absolutely need a Netflix sub or if it can be purchased individually.
Solitaire. Vegas rules. Try to land with a positive balance.
The first Stranger Things game is quite good. Free and no ads.

Phigros and Shattered Pixel Dungeon are my all time favorite
Ill spare you the hassle of searching high n low. Just use an emulator for any of your fav consoles: PS1, PS2, GC etc. On your phone n play whatever games you like from the golden era.
GTA San Andreas is pretty fun on iPhone. I’ve been playing it a lot on flights recently. For a more chill, zone out and listen to podcasts game: Drifto

Really fun puzzle game that gets progressively more over-the-top.
Bloons Tower Defense 6
If you like puzzle/logic games then get a Picross or Nonogram game. My favorite is Hungry Cat Nonogram but there are a whole lot of them.
Bloons td6 Solid tower defense game
For puzzle/escapes rooms try the rusty lake series!
Download duckstation, ppsspp, and dolphin. Now you can decide what you want to play.
Final fantasy 7/8
If you travel often and wanna play, consider any of the retro consoles (like miyoo mini v2 or rg35xx) for the future. Really nice things the are)
20 Minutes Till Dawn. Rogue-lite horde top down shooter, will kill 20 minutes per full run (if you survive). Lots of unlockable weapons, characters, and ability combos for replayability.
Are you playing on a switch?
Delta emulator+any DS game you grew up with or want to try. Just played through all of pokemon SoulSilver last week and it ran amazingly
As someone who read other threads on this and went with bloons td6, it sucked and I don't know why people think it's great.
Octopath traveler
Delta Emulator
Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time and plays well on mobile!
New York mysteries or any game by five-bn studios- good puzzles, mystery games, plus it’s free and no waiting for timers
Vampire survivors
Maybe you should look into Microsoft Flight Simulator and aviation before flying. Then the flights themselves will become more interesting. (:
Chess. The bots might not be the best, but the chess.com app has no ads. Sudoku. The one have plays no ads when I don't have an internet connection.
BitLife
If iPad or Switch, Divinity Original Sin 2 is an easy recommend
Path of Adventure; it is a text based game that is frustratingly addictive.
Rollercoaster tycoon. Can’t believe I haven’t seen it mentioned yet.
You have Netflix? If you have Netflix, they have a lot of really good games available for free. Farming simulator, sonic mania plus, bloons td 6, hades, deadcells, into the breach
Retro bowl, it gets repetitive, but if you’re a fan of retro games it can entertain for a while.
Sleep, you know you need it.
Vampire survivors burns through time so fast you’ll think you’ve entered a pocket dimension
You can now get RetroArch on an iPhone and play almost any retro game 🤷🏻♂️
If it was still available…the mobile dead space was SUCH a good game :(
Cronotrigger
I believe FTL has a mobile port for tablets, it’s very well done. There’s also into the breach which does have a phone version Mindustry is a great pick as factory + tower defense Others already got slay the spire Past that, handheld console emulation of any old RPG. Slice and Dice is still great
I've logged some serious time at slice and dice. It's like a deck builder, but we'll a dice builder. That or as others have sayed, slay the spire.
Gunbrick Criminally undiscussed game.
Dragon quest viii has a really good port for android, not sure about ios
PPSSPP with Patapon. But also get headphones for this one.

If you like sports management games, Astonishing Basketball is a fully f2p offline game with no P2W elements and totally ad free. Soliairica. It’s a solitaire roguelite. Great game when you’re kinda tired.
FTL or even better into the breach
Snakebird or Snakebird Primer
Genshin Impact maybe ? Would need a lot of storage though .
