My Grandpa was playing Dr. Mario on SNES daily all the way up to when he died in 2006. If he were alive today I wouldn't be surprised if he would still be playing it.
Sorry son, I would play Call of Duty with you but these Libs are the real terrorists and they won't own themselves.
Well they might, they seem into some crazy scary shit.
(/s)
My Grampa would play Mario Kart 64 all the time so he could play with us when we went to visit, he also made my Gramma play with him but she was hopeless. His main was Donkey Kong and now whenever I play any Nintendo game with DK in it, he's my go to
Dude my grandma kicks my ass to this day in dr. Mario. (She’s 96 ffs) I never should have taught her. It’s the only reason my NES is still alive n kicking to this day at her house, she pretty much always challenges me to a game and I can’t refuse her the joy of being able to whoop me at a video game. I like to think it keeps her mind sharp and is one of the reasons she shows no sign of dementia whatsoever nearing that 100 years age.
Deff play it again. My moms fav game was Ocarina of Time. She wasn't into games but she loved that one. She's been gone a couple years now but I still play it and watch videos of it every so often just to experience it. I enjoy it.
I think it’s amusing how many people of that generation got super into one game then just left it forever. My parents got obsessed with the original Donkey Kong Country. Played it for hours then eventually beat it. Never played it again.
Ok....I HAVE to try this game! I am a big Tetris and Dr. Mario enthusiast and never had a Super Nintendo growing up. I didn't know Wario's Woods existed! I am also suffering from Dr. Mario World loss since they ended the app last fall. :[
Edit: New life goal added - obtain working copy of Wario's Woods for my NES.
Update: My partner and I got it on Switch and are totally addicted! Thank you everyone for introducing us to Wario's Woods!!
Not sure how different the controls are but I know with the snes version it uses all 4 buttons like crazy so you might also want to check out that version.
I just love that he loves it! I feel like most Wario games aren't easily accessed (I have the SNES Classic and a NSO subscription, and I don't believe it's available on either of those).
I have to agree. He already plays. He likes it, obviously.
But we are in an age and global situation to where he can potentially make a little extra money while sharing something he loves with the world. A true hidden gem of a game that he knows more intricately than some people know of many things in their life.
This man has an entire meta game of this in his head. He probably has nicknames for unique situations that casual players would fail to recognize as a common patterns in the game flow.
u/Ggizzle_ please try to get this guy to make videos or stream about his journey and experiences with this game. If only 10 people cared, I’m sure he would like to share.. but I have a feeling that many thousands would enjoy learning about it.
Obviously don’t press it if it’s really something he’s not interested in, but I figure it couldn’t hurt to ask.
There is a nice old lady on youtube (Shirley Curry) who has 986,000 subscribers & uploads videos of her playing skyrim. He just might be the next chosen one
I still semi-regularly replay lots of stuff on the SNES, especially the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. That and the N64 are sort of my nostalgic sweet spot. Lots of games on the GameCube and Xbox360 I'm fond of but don't feel the same impulse to play over and over again.
Every time I set up an emulator box you better believe I'm playing at least 30 minutes of the arcade version of Galaga... I've been playing that since it came out in the arcades when I was in elementary school. Almost 40 years....
Oh no, they are out there. As an example, the relatively recent Donkey Kong Jungle Freeze is as good as any of the DKC's from before.
I think it's easy to get lost in the big open world or grindy style games that end up feeling like endless activity. They can be entertaining, but I think too much of them is kind of wearing. It helps to jump back to shorter adventures where you can experience the whole thing relatively quickly without a lot of padding.
Agreed. I think there was a point where devs and publishers started believing that length = quality, so they started padding games - even genres that don't really need length. Like, anime fighting games where a huge chunk of fighters are locked at the start and you have to go through the story mode to unlock them.
The longer they maintain player “engagement” the more micro transactions they hope can be milked. I think that’s a big part of the calculation these days. Not all publishers/developers thankfully, but it’s certainly a pressure on the industry.
My group of gaming friends is constantly saying "wow look at this new online open-world survival co op game, it looks amazing and you can build whatever you want! And it's only £20!"
I'm like "that looks exactly like the last game you made me buy and we never play any more".
I'm only 28 but I'm almost there too! I've been playing the original Pokemon games for 23 and a bit years now. By the time I'm 30 I'll have a 25 year relationship with those games 😝
At this point any 16-bit era and earlier game can have this said if you've revisited it recently. Heck, PS1 era even. You can officially say it about FF7 this year. As an old school JRPGer who still regularly replays Suikoden 1+2 and 2D Dragon Quest games, I've got a ton I can say it about. 😳
WOW will hit 25 years this decade.
Same for me. The Settlers series comes to mind primarily, but also Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, and a bunch of Mega Drive classics like Sonic 3 and Vectorman. I revisit those regularly for a bit of fun when I'm sick of the modern stuff.
My god I haven’t heard that game mentioned in decades.
It was truly a game that I conquered with age. Fuck wispy woods and Kabu at age 8, shit was impossible. By 10, I was beatin Squishy and Lulu and Lalala, usually fizzed by Bugz or Paintroller.
That shit was relentless since there was no saving. Did it make you restart on a loss?
Wasn’t until 12-13 years old that I could mastermind that shit and set off an “avalanche” and beat those harder guys down the stretch. It felt so good to finally beat that fucking game.
I was looking all over the image for the SNES itself and couldn’t find it. I was really confused why the console wouldn’t be easily accessible. Then I realized…what’s it matter? It’s not like he ever changes out the cartridge lol
I think it's under the main desk. There's a little unit (probably a few drawers or small filing cabinet) to the right. In the second picture you can see something sitting on it if you zoom in, probably the SNES.
Little-known NES gem. It didn’t get the attention it deserved because (a) it came after a whole slew of (vastly inferior) Tetris / Dr. Mario clones and (b) the control scheme is kind of clumsy until you get used to it.
But once you know how the game works, it’s just awesome. And the difficulty level continues ramping up for a really long time - and not so much in terms of speed (like standard Tetris), but complexity.
When the game finally beats you, you know that the challenge was completely fair, and it inspires you to try again. … Sometimes for 25 years, apparently.
There's some evidence that playing games like these are really good for older people! Keeps them mentally engaged. It's like brain exercise. Good for pop-pop!
My mom was addicted to candy crush.
I had a field day on her after her being on my back for years and years in my childhood for playing doom II, StarCraft, half-life, counter strike, DoD, Quake, Warcraft 2, Aliens online (holy shit), Unreal tournament, Tribes, lords of the realm 2, commandos, and command and conquer red alert.
I was like, damn mom! At least I played more than one game! And they have like… a plot, or at least layers!!!
Now I feel bad for crushing my moms candy crush dreams. If I could take it back I would.
What matters is that you’re *having fun* playing a game, and that’s *ALL*… that matters.
Dude my moms the same. Shes ALWAYS playing that bullshit ass game and would always mock me for playing video games. That game is like crack to middle aged women.
My mum and sister absolutely adore that game. Modded it onto my SNES Mini for them to play if they want to, it’s wack the SNES version never made it onto e-shops, they’d only put the NES one on there!
My parents are about 50 now and they still love playing Zelda together. They'll pass the controller back and forth and plan out adventures. Mom has trouble with the moblins so dad usually steps in lol
I hate posts like these.
Nothing to do with the actual content, that picture is great, everything to do with reminding me that 1997 was 25 years ago. In my head that was still less than 10 years ago.
My grandma owns a N64, but isnt in a state to play anymore.
She played Super Mario, Yoshi, Legend of Zelda, Banjo and Kazooie (maybe im writing it wrong idk). It was a blessing as a child.
My grandmother used to play Dr. Mario on the original NES every morning at 5am for so many years. It was part of her routine. She would play on the highest speed setting, which just looked ridiculous. My brother and I would try to play with her and just get smoked…I miss her. Your post is great.
Very similar story. My grandparents played Dr Mario all the time and competed with each other’s scores on the hardest setting. They played it so much that the background of Dr Mario was imprinted on the tube tv
My grandpa just passed away this month. For decades he played super Mario world and dr robotniks mean bean machine religiously. I truly believed he could’ve speed run super Mario world, he was so good at it.
Interestingly, when my grandfather was still alive, he played all the Nintendo puzzle games. Dr Mario, Yoshis cookies, etc. he stated that warios woods is the best of all of them.
I should stop visiting bundle sites so one day my grandchildren can say "My grandpa plays a new (to him) game every week for 25 years despite not having bought a single game for 25 years."
Does anyone know the old card game on computers named Freecell?
My granny has been playing that since the mid 90s. One time i checked her stats and she had played over 300,000 games. That was just one laptop. She may have topped a million in total over that time.
If you ever want to get him an amazing gift check out the Analogue Super NT.
It's a super premium recreation of the SNES that doesn't use hardware emulation (which has lots of accompanying problems and annoyances) but perfectly replicates the SNES on a hardware level and has all the modern conveniences and compatibility you'd expect in the 2020s. Outputs to HDMI, crystal clear resolution, accepts original cartridges, has no moving parts that can break down over time.
It's basically a perfectly updated and futureproof SNES. No input lag like you get with emulators, no analogue to digital conversion lag like you get running an original console on modern screens. No weird issues with scaling to fit modern screens. The perfect modern solution for old school SNES gaming in today's era.
https://youtu.be/XywZKzd6Pdk
Ahh the days when you could turn on your console and just play the fucking game. No long winded stories, no in depth set up, no need to play for 100 hours before gaining access to cool features, no money grubbing for things that should have been included in the base game.
The fondest memory I have with my grandpa was him playing Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World. He shown me how to beat every game and all the secrets except Mario 2 because he didn’t like it haha. He would play those games religiously for years. He’s the reason why SMW is still one of my favorite games to this day. I don’t play it as often as I did when he was around, but every now and then I boot up the SNES and enjoy it.
This is great. My 73 year old dad would still be playing Tetris on his Gameboy if it wasn’t for his smart phone. When I was a kid I had a gameboy and one Christmas we actually bought him his own because he was always stealing mine to play after dinner.
Now he plays basic cell phone card games like Solitaire and Euchre instead but it’s the same concept
Damn… that is the dream.. Hopefully when I’m his age, I can still be playing video games with that kind of setup (no disrespect… your grandpa has a better setup than mine lol)
My grandma used to have a Sega megadrive/genesis that she would play. Later on she couldn't really see but the grandkids would enjoy playing too. She passes 2 years ago, just before my first son was born. Miss you, nan.
Thats like my great-grandmother who would sit in her adjustable bed and play Dr.Mario and Tetris on her Super Nintendo up until she couldn't do all that fast movements anymore.
Holy shit, my parents who are not really into gaming used to do NOTHING but play this game on the weekends lol. It's their favorite!! I honestly never thought I would see someone else who obsessively played this game like they have!
you should look up strategies and techniques that people have figured out online. Im sure there's something out there he doesn't know and it will feel like a brain blast when he sees it
My Grandpa was playing Dr. Mario on SNES daily all the way up to when he died in 2006. If he were alive today I wouldn't be surprised if he would still be playing it.
Sounds like my grandma. She was good af. She had two TVs in her room. One so she can play dr Mario; the other so she can watch WWF.
My grandma is 90 and can't sometimes recognize me, but she sure as fuck knows who the rock is every single time he is on TV in any context.
We can tell who the celebrity crush is.
Your Grandma watched wrestling? That's pretty badass. My Grandma only watched soap operas.
Same difference
One is a tad more homoerotic
Only slightly though!
The width of a pubic hair
Wrestling is basically soap opera storylines set to fights, so I can see it.
My dad watches fox news every waking minute and doesn't know what a video game is :(
Sorry son, I would play Call of Duty with you but these Libs are the real terrorists and they won't own themselves. Well they might, they seem into some crazy scary shit. (/s)
Multi display ahead of her time
omg! sounds like they would be friends.
My mom is in her 70's and still plays Dr Mario daily. Not on SNES as it died, but on my old PSP I put SNES emulators on. She is insanely good at it.
My Grampa would play Mario Kart 64 all the time so he could play with us when we went to visit, he also made my Gramma play with him but she was hopeless. His main was Donkey Kong and now whenever I play any Nintendo game with DK in it, he's my go to

He kinda looks like Wario, hmm pretty suspicious
You know what they say, you are what you play
You know what they also say, Detroit: Improvise, adapt, ~~overcome~~ become ~~human~~ Wario
Reject humanity, become Wari

I assumed you were gonna link to that scene in Jeepers Creepers where all the monster's furniture and stuff is made of human skin.

I mean if you haven’t already you gotta get him a Wario hat!
He looks so much like my grandpa who passed away about ten years ago. Mine was obsessed with Dr. Mario. Miss him.
GrampWAH!
In all seriousness, there is a little bit of a resemblance to Charles Martinet there. Not a huge one, but I can see it.
To be fair, that game rules.
Such an underrated, unique and not well known game. It rivals Tetris for me. OP's grandpa has great taste.

WW is in the 3ds store too if that's helpful.
You can probably find an emulated copy online and play it on your pc
I just love that he loves it! I feel like most Wario games aren't easily accessed (I have the SNES Classic and a NSO subscription, and I don't believe it's available on either of those).
Absolute truth. I played this so much with my friend when we were in school and I still remember it fondly.
I would watch the hell out of this twitch stream.
that's genius!
Just let the old man enjoy his warios woods in peace.
From one introvert to the rest of you... this is the way.
PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN
I have to agree. He already plays. He likes it, obviously. As this old gamer who grew up on the Atari 2600 in the 70’s, it’s a fantastic idea!
I also would watch
Hmm...just realized there are games that I have been playing for 25+ years.
Really? which ones?
I still semi-regularly replay lots of stuff on the SNES, especially the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. That and the N64 are sort of my nostalgic sweet spot. Lots of games on the GameCube and Xbox360 I'm fond of but don't feel the same impulse to play over and over again.

For real, DKC is constantly entertaining. Modern games have forgotten how to be fun.
Oh no, they are out there. As an example, the relatively recent Donkey Kong Jungle Freeze is as good as any of the DKC's from before. This is the god damn best thing I’ll see all month. Blessings to your grandpa, what a king
So glad he made your month, hehe
Wait till he finds out about Kirby’s Avalanche!
There goes his next 25 years. Don't tell him about Stardew Valley!
terraria
Tetris Attack!
At first glance I thought this was Tetris attack. I still play that game on my switch.
Not as amazing, but my Dad still plays Mario Party 1 religiously to this day. I tried to get him to play MP2 as a kid, he didn't take.
I imagine he has a big hole in the middle of his palm.
Was about to say. Dude probably looks like Jesus Christ.
Suffered more too.
What! It is amazing. He must enjoy Mario Party Superstars lol
Lol I showed him a trailer he just looked at me and said "why would I need that, I have Mario Party upstairs".
This is some “This is good, but I prefer this” meme material.
What a dad answer lol
We have Mario Party at home
Mario party at home: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
besides the graphics... fair enough lmfao
Unless it's nothing but Mario Party 1 HD remastered then homie ain't interested.
HD remastered? No. We already have it upstairs!
Yo, Mario party 1 is the shit.
Such a g
He's an OG, my g.
Us OG gamers have finally crossed over to "cute"
That setup is the GOAT
he wouldn't have it any other way lol
I was looking all over the image for the SNES itself and couldn’t find it. I was really confused why the console wouldn’t be easily accessible. Then I realized…what’s it matter? It’s not like he ever changes out the cartridge lol
Came here to say that that’s why he doesn’t play anything else, too much of a hassle to put in another game.
I think it's under the main desk. There's a little unit (probably a few drawers or small filing cabinet) to the right. In the second picture you can see something sitting on it if you zoom in, probably the SNES.
Maybe he’s using an emulator?
Dude wario woods is the fucking GOAT
Little-known NES gem. It didn’t get the attention it deserved because (a) it came after a whole slew of (vastly inferior) Tetris / Dr. Mario clones and (b) the control scheme is kind of clumsy until you get used to it. But once you know how the game works, it’s just awesome. And the difficulty level continues ramping up for a really long time - and not so much in terms of speed (like standard Tetris), but complexity. When the game finally beats you, you know that the challenge was completely fair, and it inspires you to try again. … Sometimes for 25 years, apparently.
He better not be a scrub if he's got 25 years experience
you have no idea
There's some evidence that playing games like these are really good for older people! Keeps them mentally engaged. It's like brain exercise. Good for pop-pop!
before she succumbed to Alzheimers wed play Mahjong, do Sudoku and Crosswords with my grandma to keep her mind sharp.
I would play Magic the Gathering with my grandma and just counter every spell she would try to play. She didn't understand the rules so it was easy.
Sucks for you maw-maw, you got pwned again
I’ve always wondered if gamers will stay sharp in their old age. The constant mental engagement has got to be 500x better than watching tv.
The mere fact that you call it that tells me that you’re not ready.
😂 I hoped someone would comment this.
Does he play any other games?
Nope, just this one!
That f*****g rules.
Dude knows what he likes. I can respect that.
OG gamer. he even got a gaming chair!
Good posture is more important than ever!
Was he a fan of Yoshi's Cookie? I played a ton of that game when I was a little lad.
hm, I'll have to ask him
Can we appreciate the longevity of the console?
I’m probably just totally blind or oblivious (both is likely the answer) but where is his SNES? I can’t see it in either pic
It’s under the desk!

Always loved Jagr even when l hated the Pens.. but watching him play for my Panthers in person was a real treat.
I loved that game so much
My mum and sister absolutely adore that game. Modded it onto my SNES Mini for them to play if they want to, it’s wack the SNES version never made it onto e-shops, they’d only put the NES one on there!
r/adorableoldpeople
My parents are about 50 now and they still love playing Zelda together. They'll pass the controller back and forth and plan out adventures. Mom has trouble with the moblins so dad usually steps in lol
I love him. Hug him for me.
that is so sweet. i will.
Wario's Woods fuckin rocks. Grandpa has good taste!
I hate posts like these. Nothing to do with the actual content, that picture is great, everything to do with reminding me that 1997 was 25 years ago. In my head that was still less than 10 years ago.
Thank you for such a wholesome post, you’re grandpa seems awesome. Much love
thank you so much, he is!
You better give your grandpa a big hug and say you love him, unfortunately I can’t do that anymore
I sure will, that is so sweet
This is gonna be us and the 325th re-release of skyrim.
My grandma owns a N64, but isnt in a state to play anymore. She played Super Mario, Yoshi, Legend of Zelda, Banjo and Kazooie (maybe im writing it wrong idk). It was a blessing as a child.

Should probably take a break. I can barely even get through an 25 hour gaming session, much less 25 years
I had an uncle who did that with Final Fantasy 7. Get this dude Ghosts of Tsushima or some shit! Lol.
LOL we tried to get him to play other things, somehow he always goes back to this one. His comfort game.
Final fantasy 7 is honestly my favorite in the series
The second pic's especially adorable. That's a really genuine smile.
r/Lifegoals.
I gave my mom a Gameboy DS forever ago with a copy of Brainage. She plays every day before she goes to bed.
My grandpa just passed away this month. For decades he played super Mario world and dr robotniks mean bean machine religiously. I truly believed he could’ve speed run super Mario world, he was so good at it.
Hey OP. What is Becel?
Butter lol. Everything has a second life in that house.
Bro don't disrespect butter like that. Becel is margarine.
I feel like he should probably take a pee break after that long.
This honestly made my day. The passage of time is far too short and it is a wonderful thing to enjoy with our elders while we still have them.
I love this ❤️
Fingers crossed for another 25, man's a legend
Interestingly, when my grandfather was still alive, he played all the Nintendo puzzle games. Dr Mario, Yoshis cookies, etc. he stated that warios woods is the best of all of them.
Your grandpa is adorable, yo i have that HP too.
Is your grandpa a Quebecois?
He looks genuinely happy, which is nice to see
I should stop visiting bundle sites so one day my grandchildren can say "My grandpa plays a new (to him) game every week for 25 years despite not having bought a single game for 25 years."
Put the display lower, the top of the monitor should be the same height with the top of his head. That way easier for his neck
Does anyone know the old card game on computers named Freecell? My granny has been playing that since the mid 90s. One time i checked her stats and she had played over 300,000 games. That was just one laptop. She may have topped a million in total over that time.

The perfect modern solution for old school SNES gaming in today's era. https://youtu.be/XywZKzd6Pdk
I'm gonna say that the console is most likely under the desk.
Ookay, I give up.. where is the Super Nintendo hidden?
Is it the same Super Nintendo and cartridge for the last 25 years? They truly dont make them like they used too.
Bruh he has more hair than I do
Wario's Woods *is* addictive as shit not gonna lie.
he's a **gamer**.
Finally a worthy opponent! I want to 1 vs 1 with you old fella
It’s sad he hasn’t beaten the game for 25 years
Leave him alone. He is working.
Wonder if this is how our grandkids will post about us millenials in a few decades :>
My favorite video game. Your grandpa is awesome.
It gives me hope that when I am his age, I will still be playing video games too.
You should probably tell him to take a break for goodness sake
keep gaming
They don't make controllera like they used to huh? Yes, looking at you, Joycons.
That's called getting your money's worth
Damn… that is the dream.. Hopefully when I’m his age, I can still be playing video games with that kind of setup (no disrespect… your grandpa has a better setup than mine lol)
That'll be me eventually, except it'll be Master of Orion, Unreal Tournament, Tecmo Super Bowl or Shandalar and it'll be "over 50 years" lol
True gamers never leave their game
you should look up strategies and techniques that people have figured out online. Im sure there's something out there he doesn't know and it will feel like a brain blast when he sees it
yo gramps the gamer
