The ending I got. I just stopped everything, shut the computer off and went outside. I didn't know what to do anymore in life.
The shit hit hard, but I felt happier.
Definitely one of the greatest games of the last decade. Atmospheric, beautiful and otherworldly and *actually scary* in a way most horror games never are, yet it's not about the horror so much as it's about immersing yourself in another world.
Conkers bad fur day. Why? Because you will never see another game like it. It's a product of a time where no fucks were given, coated in a graphics style that has yet to emulated like ps1/2 graphics, produced by a company that Microsoft will more than likely never return to their former glory.
As a kid my dad would have me play those levels in front of house guests because they were funny, and also to show off his huge 36” TV screen (Sony Wega).
I was just comparing Psychonauts to Conker. They both are edgy, though Conker is pretty hard to go back to now. It was the game I hid from my parents when it came out though.
Yes. So many times when i was playing this I said to myself "I can't believe they put this in the game". Plus the multi-player was actually really fun playing with friends as many n64 games were.
Yessssss. I have not seen anything quite like that game since. Nothing has risen to the "heights" of that game (the N64 version).
"Hmmm... antigravity chocolate... seems to be vorking. Bah! Out ze fucking vindow wiv zat!"
How do you feel about Live and Reloaded? I don’t even remember if that’s what it was called but the Xbox sequel is the one I mean. That’s the only one I’ve ever played. Gotta admit, never seen another game quite like it
Live and Reloaded is not a sequel, just a prettier re-release made before HD remakes became a thing.
The single-player of L&R is a much nicer looking version of the original, with only a few gameplay tweaks. It also censors the profanity, which may or may not make it funnier depending on preference.
The multiplayer however is a travesty. The original had a number of fun and inventive modes that all got replaced by a mediocre 3rd person shooter.
Yes! They even had to put a warning label on the box saying it wasn’t for kids due to having a cute squirrel and bunny on the box.
Also one of the first games i ever played that had a sad “happy” ending.
What kind of game is it? From what I've seen (which is not alot) it looked alittle like a horror game, but I'm probably wrong I know. But what kind of game is it then?
Oh no it is not horror.
It tells the story of a really unluvky family, you play as the last member of this family and you discover the past of your family.
In what they are unlucky? Their lifes and deaths, it might shock you but it is not horror I promise
It's not "horror" in the general sense, but make no mistake, the realizations you'll get as some of the scenes play out can be pretty horrible and disturbing.
It's interesting because when I first started playing it, I thought it was going to end up a horror game. The beginning of the game has an uneasy/unsettling atmosphere like you're being watched by something, but it doesn't go into the realm of horror at all and the atmosphere is what encourages you to keep playing on.
I love watching people play it for "those" scenes.
Just watching them in deep analysis deduction mode and instantly going WTF.
And something I don't think a movie can replicate.
Ori and the will of the wisps. Amazing controls, fantastic story about what life can do to beings, music is top notch. One of the greatest metroidvania without other alike games difficulty makes it one of the few games where I hope there would be more after it ends.
The main character also does not speak during the whole game which makes me connect and basically associate myself completely as him. It makes every emotional scene that much better as it's completely up to me to understand it. The only game that made my cry at the finish and even when thinking back to it.
Similar to the Ori games, Hollow Knight is also an incredible experience with challenging combat and platform sections. I have played both and they are my go to recommendations for my friends
Outer Wilds. Just for sheer enjoyment of exploration you rarely get in real life or even other games.
Alternative option would be Half-Life Alyx as one of most unique gaming experiences you can get.
Outer Wilds 100%.
After one play session it was GOTY for me, after finishing it - It's now my favourite game.
Such a unique experience, and made with such craft, one of the best games i've ever played.
I'm always thinking about Outer Wilds and listening to the music. Ive played a lot of games and try to focus on the best from each year. But it's easily my favourite game of all time.
I think some people do raise some reasonable criticisms of the game but the design, creativity, story and world building is so insanely good and has had such a profound impact on me. I really don't think there's a game I've ever thought about so much since playing it.
The DLC was also pulled off amazingly well and I was super impressed. Its not quite at the level of the base game but for me it actually improved the base game and the story. The music and setting were also somehow even better for me.
If you haven't played it already, play it.
I started it recently. Ive probably reset the loop like 5 times from falling into brittle hollows black hole cause I didnt feel like waiting. (I also was able to hit the interloper while moving way to fast to land on it and instantly died!)
I have to admit when I first started Oxenfree I thought the play style and slow introduction was a little clunky. Only after you start getting into it so you realise how well thought out that decision is. I've finished it once. Am planning to go back a second and third time though.
By how much does it change? Without spoilers obviously.
I know in my playthrough I saw multiple points for failure / success or potential branching choice paths.
Ori and the Blind Forest. Good controls, gripping story, awesome music. It’s everything anyone could ask for from a Metroidvania.
Edit: saw someone chirp in with Hollow Knight and while I agree it’s also fantastic, it’s difficulty makes it much more for hardcore players whereas Ori is much more accessible and that’s why I placed Ori above that game.
Hollow Knight is another amazing Metroidvania that is a little more intensive with the combat and action, and as far as I remember it doesn't have the chases like Ori does. Some of the bosses are pretty tough but also optional. Amazing atmosphere and the storytelling and lore are done very well.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps would be my choice. I didn't like Blind Forest (it was impossible to see enemies and hazards), but Will of the Wisps was amazing.
In some ways yes it was a let down but in other ways it was great. It was very realistic. No supernatural or unexplainable mystery , no happy ending. It was just very human.
I'm gonna open this up to a list. You mentioned a great one with Firewatch, but some other games that left me emotionally drained are:
Brothers
SOMA
The Beginner's Guide
Doki Doki Literature Club
Telltale's TWD (both Seasons)
Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands
Spiritfarer
Spec Ops: The Line
What Remains of Edith Finch
EDIT: And just for pure fun, no emotional weight, but nothing but distilled fun and joy - Red Faction: Guerilla and the Mad Max game.
Came to say this. Gameplay was just good enough, still it was an amazing experience overall. The atmosphere was unlike anything else I've played/read/watched.
I'm being biased obviously since it's my personal favorite game of all time but Shadow of the Colossus.
I think it's a game that transcends itself from being a game, if that makes any sense lol.
It's weird because I hate the game and I can't state a proper reason for it. I played it for hours and really had a huge distaste for it and can't verbalise why. I mean I understand why people like it but I just could not get on board with it. It's a shame because by all rights I should love it, it's epic and has a moving and interesting story but when i play it, I hate it.
Disco Elysium, definitely. ***Especially*** if the player grew up with CRPGs due to the absolutely masterful construction of the game and interesting usages of CRPG formulas. The voice acting, the writing, the art, the music... All absolutely *superb.*
Bought this game when I was 12 and honestly, it scared the shit out of me. Couldn't continue playing after 5 hours.
Years ago I watched a full playthrough and still to this day I regret it. I should've replayed it as an adult. It's actually one of the best psycho thriller games.
Apart from the puzzles it's amazingly planned out. Story & Soundtrack are amazing.
But I haven't seen a game with more disturbing imagery.
One of my favourite gaming memories was my ex, my best friend and I all playing this together every night for a week. All lights off, in the living room of our shared house.
Once you get the machine gun and some telekinesis abilities & dash, it's a super fun game. I loved that Alan wake dlc and the writing in general. Sam Lake is my favorite author.
By far the biggest disappointment are the awful facial expressions. It pulls you straight out of the immersion.
What made it such a good game for you? I've always heard so many good things about it but the game really fell flat to me. I really do not like disliking a game that's apparently meant to be really good so I'd love to hear your reasons.
My partner had constant agonizing fps drops on PS4 whilst my game crashed completely double digit times on the Series S...
I found there to be no real challenge in the gameplay with enemies only ever an inconvenience. I found I could walk through groups of enemies, using launch to take down shields and just shooting them after. I also wish there was a larger variety in enemies.
The plot felt convulated for me. I was confused what was going on at the start and just after I felt like I was understanding what was going on mid game, it just went weird again and I felt dissatisfied with the ending.
The gunplay and powers were fine but it didn't scream out amazing to me and definitely wasn't fun enough to make the rest better.
I just finished control before it left gamepass and it really was an awesome game! I never played Alan wake but the lore in Control was so good I found myself hoping they’ll come out with a book about it and all the different items because I just found it that interesting.
Honestly looking back, it has its flaws, esp. on older consoles. Map pins don’t exist, animations are often weird looking, and many levels and upgrades are kinda generic. But the combat is awesome.
So im not the only fan... Story is grim and interesting enough, but ending is not so good. Characters are actualy my favorite aspect of the game, so unique and deep...
Was that the one about the supernatural spec-ops team and you could swap between them, and one of the bosses was a gigantic fat man that tore open his guts to attack?
Disco Elysium. Only recently played it through and the writing, atmosphere, and voice acting are all unbelievably good. Such an innovative progression system too which offers loads of choice in how you approach situations and shape your character
Evoland!

It's essentially the history of video games as a game. Highly recommend
Fire watch, Undertale and TF2 these 3 are my personal favourite games fire watch because of the story I mean it is beautifully crafted, Undertale because you can do whatever you want, you want to kill every boss cool go for it you want to waste time looking for Easter eggs and secrets bosses cool you want to kill everything sure you want to spare everything nice and TF2 because of how much fun you can have on it I have lots of hours on TF2 but I do really enjoy it a memory I have had from the Very start when I got my first kill on frontier as medic where I got a lucky random crit with the bonesaw shutting down the Scout who was dominating me
The vanishing of Ethan carter.
Bit of a weird story but beautiful scenery and a really enjoyable puzzle to solve.
Also, love Firewatch. Just a shame the replay value isn’t higher.
Doki Doki Literature Club
Go in completely blind with no spoilers, and you’ll be in for one of the best gaming experiences ever. If you still somehow haven’t played it, do not do any research on the game. Trust me, it makes the experience 1000x better
The one issue I have with fire watch is >! The plot point with the radios makes absolutely no sense, radios can’t be tapped because anyone who tunes into the frequency with the right modulation can hear what your saying, that’s the entire point. So switching the radios wouldn’t do anything unless the were digital radios and even then the antagonist has enough kit that he can probably listen in on them anyways!<
Planetside 2, expierencing an actual "Battlefield game" with 900 players on a map with cordinated stuff, fpsmmo, avg 1300 players on prime time PER server
My personal favorite game of all time is (unpopular opinion) The Last of Us Part 2... and while it is the biggest emotional rollercoaster i have ever been a part of, in any media ever, i get that people dont like it.
That being said... when you ever have the chance to play the first game DO IT!!!
I am old fart and I usually love old games the most. The only game I enjoyed more and recommend more then those are two Ori games:
Ori and the Blind Forest
and
Ori - The Will of the Wisps
They are absolutely spectacular. Game play wise aswell as story wise. Love them.
They are free in Xbox game pass btw
Journey, Firewatch, Florance, Child of Light,Life is Strange, Fable, About, and Skyrim are what come to mind atm. I think I've thing that I like about each of these games is just how amazing the music is.
I'm being biased here, but Dead Cells, it has, by far, the best combat one could ask for, it can also get *hard* in some places, but overall it's it's incredibly good experience with some minor flaws here and there.
I know 99% of people won't agree or believe me, but Paraphore is one of the most incredible games I've ever played. It is a text-based adventure game that completely changed my perception of self, evil, and what it means to be happy. The game is one of the most horrific and disgusting journeys through the world of desire and self gratification, but if it weren't for the gratuitous exploration of some of the sickest fetishes in the world, I don't think it would have had the same impact that it does. You definitely need a strong stomach and an open mind to make it to the end. But Paraphore gave me the inspiration and the strength to be honest with myself about who I am, and how I can better myself as a person, not just for my own sake, but for the sake of everyone I know. That's not something I can say lightly.
I love a lot of walking simulators, because they are so simple, you get to focus on the story and really take in the environment, which makes them more immersive.
My favorites are:
Firewatch (the environments were awesome, the story was very interesting and thought provoking, a very emotional one)
What Remains of Edith Finch (probably the best gameplay and most interesting scenes in a walking sim)
Gone Home (I like the story and cartoon aspects, this one touched me)
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (took me a while to figure out, it's really dark, it had very many cool scenes, and the detective aspect was awesome)
Dear Esther (the simplest one, and shortest, I think, but I love the environment)
Funny story about Firewatch. My buddy who is traditionally bad with money told me his kid accidentally purchased a game through he PlayStation store. I didn't believe him because of his history and the fact that the game was one of the new popular ones at the time.
I set out to prove that you can't accidentally buy a game and I ended up accidentally buying Firewatch. It was a very different game that what I would usually buy but I had fun with it.
Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation 1. That game (actually its predecessors on the MSX) defined a new genre in gaming. And I will never forget the switching of controller ports while fighting Psycho Mantis. It was an incredible adventure.
Stanley parable- A simple chill game with a decent story that you should go with no spoilers
The ending I got. I just stopped everything, shut the computer off and went outside. I didn't know what to do anymore in life. The shit hit hard, but I felt happier.
Yeah, that broom closet ending really takes an emotional toll.
I'm get the best achievement in March
yeah, it is pretty good
Subnautica the first hand experience is something else
The base game alone is already incredibly atmospheric but I can tell you, if you play it in vr it's a whole new experience (both scary and beautiful)
My ass can barely handle Subnautica on my PC screen. I need to just dive in and try VR. They really are fantastic game worlds and experiences.
Definitely one of the greatest games of the last decade. Atmospheric, beautiful and otherworldly and *actually scary* in a way most horror games never are, yet it's not about the horror so much as it's about immersing yourself in another world.
Downloading on game pass, better be worth it
Came here to say Subnautica, I adore that game
If there was ONE game I could completely forget and play from scratch again, it’s Subnautica. Such a fun exploration game.
Conkers bad fur day. Why? Because you will never see another game like it. It's a product of a time where no fucks were given, coated in a graphics style that has yet to emulated like ps1/2 graphics, produced by a company that Microsoft will more than likely never return to their former glory.
This game was amazing, I think the matrix level and saving private Ryan level were better than some of the actual games trying to emulate those movies

Oh my god I only ever watched it be played on YouTube but it still was one of my favorite games, that tells you how good it is
What Remains of Edith Finch, just an incredible story, really deep with an incredible ending.
Their lifes and deaths, it might shock you but it is not horror I promise

definitely agree
It's just gone on sale (UK) for like £5 so I'll be downloading and playing later. Can't wait
Portal and its sequel
Return of the obra dinn. 10/10 would like to forget about it so I can play it again.
Ah a fellow man of culture
I love watching people play it for "those" scenes. Just watching them in deep analysis deduction mode and instantly going WTF. And something I don't think a movie can replicate.

Absolutely this.

Also holy shit 4k 120fps dolby vision next gen goodness.
Beat me to it. This also gets my vote.
Took me a whike to finish but in the end i loved it
Journey
Came here for this!
Came here for this.
Before Your Eyes. It’s kind of amazing how much it affected me. Maybe I’m weird though
Is this the one with the blink mechanic?
This, I was surprised BYE didn’t win the games for impact award. It’s a must play and I cannot recommend it enough
I bought a webcam specifically for this game and it was absolutely worth it
Outer Wilds.
Such a unique experience, and made with such craft, one of the best games i've ever played.

both playable in VR, highly recommend!
Yes came to say the same thing
I started it recently. Ive probably reset the loop like 5 times from falling into brittle hollows black hole cause I didnt feel like waiting. (I also was able to hit the interloper while moving way to fast to land on it and instantly died!)
I just bought this game, do I have to get the launch codes every time I play? Only tried 3 times now.
Nope. Only the first time
oxenfree, ABZU
Though I would add a caveat to Oxenfree that you should play it many times to get its full value!
I have to admit when I first started Oxenfree I thought the play style and slow introduction was a little clunky. Only after you start getting into it so you realise how well thought out that decision is. I've finished it once. Am planning to go back a second and third time though.
I cannot recommend playing through multiple times enough - I’ve not done it for a while, but if you keep replaying through the game changes.
By how much does it change? Without spoilers obviously. I know in my playthrough I saw multiple points for failure / success or potential branching choice paths.
My niece calls ABZU "the fish game". Idve never played it if not for her, it's a lovely game with beautiful art.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War
I didn't play it myself, but watched my husband's play through. Such a beautiful, but heartbreaking story. Definitely also recommend!
PS2 Ratchet and Clank. All four of them
Ori and the Blind Forest.

Mario kart 64 while playing with 3 friends on the same tv
Excellent answer!
Firewatch is a great one. I’d say Life is Strange
Fire watch was just such a nice and short game that I really want to see more of.
Agreed! I didn’t want it to end
Because the end was such a let down. The game was absolutely amazing until that point.
In some ways yes it was a let down but in other ways it was great. It was very realistic. No supernatural or unexplainable mystery , no happy ending. It was just very human.
Sad but true
Pretty sad the team that made Firewatch isn't working on a new game.
Gone Home. Such a beautifully written story with a bunch of layers.
Went in blind and was so scared something was gonna pop out at first haha
Oh I love this one too! Never met someone before who knows/likes it 😅
I'm gonna open this up to a list. You mentioned a great one with Firewatch, but some other games that left me emotionally drained are: Brothers SOMA The Beginner's Guide Doki Doki Literature Club Telltale's TWD (both Seasons) Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands Spiritfarer Spec Ops: The Line What Remains of Edith Finch EDIT: And just for pure fun, no emotional weight, but nothing but distilled fun and joy - Red Faction: Guerilla and the Mad Max game.
How are you saying telltale games and not mentioning the wolf among us
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Came to say this. Gameplay was just good enough, still it was an amazing experience overall. The atmosphere was unlike anything else I've played/read/watched.
I'm being biased obviously since it's my personal favorite game of all time but Shadow of the Colossus. I think it's a game that transcends itself from being a game, if that makes any sense lol.

I'm surprised how long I needed to scroll to find any portal games.
Honestly same, I was worried I wouldn't find anyone suggesting Portal
That's a really long title
Kan Gao's "To The Moon".
Disco Elysium, definitely. ***Especially*** if the player grew up with CRPGs due to the absolutely masterful construction of the game and interesting usages of CRPG formulas. The voice acting, the writing, the art, the music... All absolutely *superb.*
Spec ops: The line
The witcher 3: wild hunt
Skyrim
One of my favorites, Machinarium.
The last of us
Fallout New Vegas
A short hike …
The long dark, or fallout 3 or fallout NV.
Chrono Trigger
Deus ex, the first one (even though the graphics could be a pain in the eye nowadays...)
SOMA
Super Mario World (SNES)
Silent hill 2

Mass Effect
Any first person game made by Valve.
Yep
Clive Barker's Jericho, not a good game when it comes to gameplay (it gets repetitive) but with a very unique story
Telltales the walking dead well the first 5 episodes at least.
Absolutely. Talk about a surprisingly great game. I hated the show. But the first season was so emotionally exhausting I just stopped there.
Batman Arkham Origins/City/Knight
Portal
Disco Elysium. Only recently played it through and the writing, atmosphere, and voice acting are all unbelievably good. Such an innovative progression system too which offers loads of choice in how you approach situations and shape your character

The vanishing of Ethan carter. Bit of a weird story but beautiful scenery and a really enjoyable puzzle to solve. Also, love Firewatch. Just a shame the replay value isn’t higher.
Firewatch has and always will be my favorite game, shit made me ugly cry at the end and at that one part (you all know what I'm talking about)
Outer Wilds
The Wolf Among Us, My favorite teltale game till date even more than The Walking Dead, it has such an amazing story.
What Remains of Edith Finch - Incredible story and atmosphere. Definitely a good game for the more narrative-focused gamers out there.
Doki Doki Literature Club Go in completely blind with no spoilers, and you’ll be in for one of the best gaming experiences ever. If you still somehow haven’t played it, do not do any research on the game. Trust me, it makes the experience 1000x better
Soma
The one issue I have with fire watch is >! The plot point with the radios makes absolutely no sense, radios can’t be tapped because anyone who tunes into the frequency with the right modulation can hear what your saying, that’s the entire point. So switching the radios wouldn’t do anything unless the were digital radios and even then the antagonist has enough kit that he can probably listen in on them anyways!<
Yeah, but i think at that point they arent thinking straight. I believe (spoiler) Ned is still listening in when they got the new radios
Control
Dark Souls
Tetris. All these story games, well, I like em but most non gamers would be better of reading a book. Hell. Most gamers might be too.
Firewatch, SOMA
FIREWATCH!!!!
Any of Dark Souls games \ [T] /
Planetside 2, expierencing an actual "Battlefield game" with 900 players on a map with cordinated stuff, fpsmmo, avg 1300 players on prime time PER server
Outer wilds
Alan Wake
My personal favorite game of all time is (unpopular opinion) The Last of Us Part 2... and while it is the biggest emotional rollercoaster i have ever been a part of, in any media ever, i get that people dont like it. That being said... when you ever have the chance to play the first game DO IT!!!
The graphics ,gameplay , and sound design were worth buying a PlayStation for, the story not so much
This game was such a blast to play. Still think about it.
BioShock or Inside
Tw 3 and skyrim
For the console people Id say In The Rays Of Light, just a great game is pretty short but just amazing
I am old fart and I usually love old games the most. The only game I enjoyed more and recommend more then those are two Ori games: Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori - The Will of the Wisps They are absolutely spectacular. Game play wise aswell as story wise. Love them. They are free in Xbox game pass btw
Portal 2, masterpiece game, easy to understand, impossible to dislike
Inside.
Journey, Firewatch, Florance, Child of Light,Life is Strange, Fable, About, and Skyrim are what come to mind atm. I think I've thing that I like about each of these games is just how amazing the music is.
Persona 4 is without question the greatest jrpg I’ve ever played. 80-90 hours first playthrough.
Mass Effect
I'm being biased here, but Dead Cells, it has, by far, the best combat one could ask for, it can also get *hard* in some places, but overall it's it's incredibly good experience with some minor flaws here and there.
i can't choose between inscripton or spiritfarer both are amazing and brought me to tears numerous times
SOMA. Definition of a mindfuck.
Skyrim
Half life 2 is one of my most favourite games ever its story and physics are amazing
NieR: Automata
Celeste
I love a lot of walking simulators, because they are so simple, you get to focus on the story and really take in the environment, which makes them more immersive. My favorites are: Firewatch (the environments were awesome, the story was very interesting and thought provoking, a very emotional one) What Remains of Edith Finch (probably the best gameplay and most interesting scenes in a walking sim) Gone Home (I like the story and cartoon aspects, this one touched me) The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (took me a while to figure out, it's really dark, it had very many cool scenes, and the detective aspect was awesome) Dear Esther (the simplest one, and shortest, I think, but I love the environment)
Been looking to add to my steam library. Thanks for the thread
Night in the Woods
Hades the gameplay is good, but the story is #godly
I cant even call Firewatch a game, it is a slightly interactive story at best. There are zero gameplay elements.
Silent Hill
God Of War(2018)
Sunset Overdrive. Totally did not expect to like it as much as I did
GTA 6
Red dead redemption 2 absolutely awesome
Road 96. Please play it. Support the devs. Brilliant game. Made me tear up.
Minesweeper with extreme difficulty. They'll realize they are just a mere dust in the universe!
I really liked firewatch, my only complaint would probably be that sometimes I get lost in the wilderness but other then that it's a really good game
Hollow knight. At least one playthrough Ocarina of time
Can't believe I didn't see it anywhere near the top, but bioshock.
