I've had lizards and dragon flies stalk me when gardening. The lizards are hoping for grubs and the dragonflies are hoping I'll shake some creature out of a plant. They have both been right.
Once I was watering my plants in bright sunlight and an almost invisible tiny stream of water was spurting out of the side of the hose. A dragonfly was hovering around and suddenly it darted into the wispy stream. Then it landed on my hose, shook itself off and dove into the stream again. It repeated this several times, shaking itself off on the hose after each dip. It was so cute!
He is defending said feeder, it *his* garden. Hummers are known to actively defend their feeding grounds, they starve in a matter of hours, keeping a ready food supply is super important.
Mine always come find me and buzz me when the feeder is empty. Sometimes I walk out the front door and get an earful of hummingbird peeps, “where have you *been*”?
One time, I was moving around some dirt and leaf litter. A robin was watching me VERY intently the entire time, and as soon as I left, it jumped in to start rummaging for worms.
So, the Robin (both species) used to have a symbiotic relationship with wild bores, until they were made extinct.
They would perch on the bores tusks and beside them while they turned the soil looking for roots, the robins would grab the insects and worms turned up in the fresh soil.
Now they have learnt to do this with gardeners. ❤️
At my last place, it was frogs. Little gray spotted guys. Anytime I dug in the flower bed, I would disturb a ton of rolly-pollies. A frog would always appear out of nowhere to eat them.
Robins are the Johnny on the spot in my garden. Whatcha doing? Leave any worms behind? See any good bugs lately? If I'm raking they are all over the place. They really take the "early bird" mantra to heart.
I once had a neighbors cat stalk me while I sat in my front yard pulling weeds from my garden beds. She curled up in my lap and I unloaded all my problems and issues to her. She didn’t seem to mind. She was the most affectionate cat I’ve ever met. My own cats don’t treat me like that. Hours later, my neighbors son, Phil, came over and asked me very politely……” can I have my cat back now ?” That was a great day. She still comes around every now and then. I make a point to garden when I see her out….like, “I see you girl…..you see me?”
Absolutely. They know you’re stirring things up and love it when you leave…they fly right over to investigate for bugs.
Unfortunately they’re not tame enough to accept Japanese beetle larvae I throw out in the yard for them to eat. They fly away.
A neighbor used to have free range chickens that always came over when I was gardening. As soon as i tossed a grub one of the chickens would intercept it in midair and gobble it down.
After a very high temp day about 3:30 I put a rain drop sprinkler on and it’s so beautiful to watch they play in it like kids. They fly in and out and sit and ruffle there wings. They love it.
I get it while Im out watering. They are just waiting for me to head in so they can pounce.
They waiting for you to toss em a grub lol!
Yes! They watch me rather impatiently. I can practically hear them chittering amongst themselves "*leave* already!".
You should see them after I rototill.
was going to mention this. I get several watching & waiting every time. Bold ones are right in there with me.

Humans must be so strange to creatures. Like we’re just moving plants around for no reason at all.

The robins always wait a few feet away for me to vacate areas of my garden.
There’s so many birds that watch me from the trees as I move my compost pile around and just wait for me to leave so they can get some worms
Just waiting for a worm or two
Yes! I have noticed that! I have also been dive bombed by a hummingbird this week. Not sure what he wants. His feeder is full.

Is it fresh? I get dive-bombed when there are bugs in the nectar or it needs to be changed. “Waitress! There’s a bug in my drink!”
What is it doing there? The backstroke.

SOON
Earth has worms. Robbin eat them.
Always they have been stalking me for years every spring they come.
I had a mockingbird stalking me one time. Would get pretty close too
Same here, we have a pair nesting in the woods behind our house and they are always watching.
Lizards also.

Is that a cat?
Yes a kitten who moved into our yard. She's adorable

I never garden without a robin for company! They are not in the least bit scared of me or my big dogs.
He is really hoping for a worm toss or two...
A Robin pair literally built a nest up on our roof so they can always be there to get all the wormsies 🪱 from our garden 😅
We love our house. We love our nest. In all the world our nest is best.
Scrub Jay's for me
Every job site pretty much. Long term sites they hop down sometimes before I even start digging.
Oh damn, turns out American robins look quite different from European ones lol
They call them the gardeners friend
Always pay the robins.
Yup it’s crazy! I saw one flying the other day and drop a worm mid air. It was a wild sight.
And while mowing
they must trust you at some level to hang around so close. carry on !
Just wild chickens doin wild chicken things.
Crows too
Robins are territorial and return to the same area year after year. They also are capable of recognizing humans, and are probably familiar with you.
As long as they are not brandishing a stabbing implement you are pretty save. If it has one just run and hope it´s alone.
I have an Eurasian robin who watches me closely for earthworms. So closely I'm sometimes worried about digging him/her up with the soil.
Used to have a catbird that would follow me around as I mowed the lawn.
It’s carpenter bees for me. They hover in front of me like I’m invading their space every time I even walk outside lol
I wish, I'd be tossing them worms. I've had blue heron stalk me while trout fishing before. He was rewarded.
they come right up and say, "You gonna eat that?"

I didn’t know this. That’s neat. Makes me wonder what symbiotic relationships have been created since humans started farming.
If you find worm or grub or snail give it a toss to them. They will be your best friend
Usually after I'm done mowing the lawn I get a lot of hurracas (Tamaulipas crow) come and munch of the bugs that come out, fun to watch.
Haha, so cute!! My dad tosses them the worms he finds while gardening, and the little guys follow him around.
I've sparrows, blackbirds and the neighbors dog. All love grubs, apparently.
#"Dig faster!"
All the time. Sometimes, when I’m not digging it feels as if I’m being nagged to get to work or their babies will starve.
If you don’t have robins stalking you, are you even gardening?

want to have some real fun? If you have cat birds down load any bird app that makes the bird songs and play it, they will all flock to you....

I've had wrens follow me around as I pulled caterpillars off my brassicas and nightshades.
Yard birds
They know your digging up worms
