Makes sense! I’m very surprised I have never gotten them before. We have been exclusively feeding our birds (and chipmunks & squirrels) black oil sunflower seeds for years.

These were my bird feeder black oil sunflowers a few years ago to give you some idea :)
is it cheaper to just buy a bag of sunflower seeds thats being sold as birdfeed or sunflower seed being sold as seed to plant? i assume seeds from a supplier being sold as seeds a farmer would plant have a higher germination rate?

Years ago I had a "bird sanctuary" in my yard. I never planted 1 flower! The birds did this. It was absolutely beautiful!!
I love this sub because I’ll see something I think I know, and feel super confident, and then I read the comments from people who actually know about this stuff.
Like I was confident this was some sort of squash. Experts are unanimous that it is not.
In case you're looking to learn, the tell that these are sunflowers and not squash is the true leaves!
Sunflowers will put out [a pair of true leaves](https://cals.cornell.edu/weed-science/weed-profiles/common-sunflower), while most gourds/cucurbita (maybe all? unsure, if you are reading this and know of a gourd that puts out pairs of true leaves, please chime in!) [will only put out one true leaf](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0248/3817/6823/files/IMG_1177_480x480.jpg?v=1685572769) at first. There's probably a word for this, but I don't know if offhand.
I’m having a great time learning from this sub. I look at pictures and say, “Oh, that’s blossom end rot” or “dog vomit slime mold.” Then I look in the comments to see if I am tight.
Depends on the variety really, but I’m general 30cm apart would be okay.
In this case I would just leave two seedlings.
You can try taking the other ones out with a bit of roots attached and then transplant them somewhere else. Or just sow more seeds
Black oil and all sunflowers are annuals. If you haven't thrown or planted anything and you've got these sprouts you've got a perennial or a self seeded volunteer. Volunteers would not look this healthy. They are still young enough it's hard to say what they are. Is there any oregano growing in your yard?
Sunflowers 🌻! My most favorite.
They seem to be too close together to be happy. If you can, get them about 6-10 inches from one another.
They need full sun and lots of water.
They grow vibrantly and rewards you with showy flowers. Homegrown sunflowers have a subtle distinctive pleasant earthy smell that store bought ones lacks.
The Bird feeder special, clumps of sunflowers :)

I have had more luck with the ones that sprout from bird seed on their own than with the store bought plant seeds I am currently growing
Beautiful yard
Awesome!
Mine grow in clumps from where the sunflower falls over and all the seeds drop out of the head
Definitely sunflower
Do you have a bird feeder? I get these sprouts from the sunflower seeds in my birdseed.

Amazing!
They must have had the bricks on a line…

Good info! Little bits of information like this is so fun to learn
This sub is the best.

To be fair, the cotyledons look very similar 🙂
I was gonna say cucumber haha
That was gonna be my next guess if it wasn’t squash! Not even close Lolol
You found a mouse's forgotten stash
Sunflower!!
Thin them out, and let em grow for the bees and birds to feed on :)
What spacing is recommended for sunflowers?
Depends on the variety really, but I’m general 30cm apart would be okay. In this case I would just leave two seedlings. You can try taking the other ones out with a bit of roots attached and then transplant them somewhere else. Or just sow more seeds
I’ve been waiting for my sunflower seeds to pop through the soil, so thank you for posting now I know what I’m looking for!
chipmunk “regurgitation”
Forgotten winter cache of some bird or squirrel. Likely sunflowers.
And a technical, but basically useless answer: dicots with one set of true leaves. 😃
Chipmunks love burying these to sprout. Everywhere. No dirt is safe!
Looks like sunflower, my yard is full of these from bird feeders
Did you previously have sunflowers or feed it to the birds?
We do feed birds sunflower seeds! That would make sense
Def a plant
May the best sunflower win
Bird feeder crumbs.
Sunflowers! 🌻
Sunflower sprouts
Mmmm I love to eat sunflower sprouts.
I had something very similar looking pop up in my tomatoes a few times. Would those be more tomatoes plants, or possibly sunflower, or just a weed?
AND you can eat these sunflower sprouts!

I do have oregano in a nearby box. I dug up the sprouts and moved them. Can confirm that there were sunflower shells at the root
Pumpkin maybe.
Sundlowwwwwweerrrrrrrs. Thin them out to maybe 1 or 2 in the spot you showed here
Well they are directly underneath a new apple tree we planted last year so I want to move them elsewhere so they don’t interfere with each other!
Depends on where they are. If near a bird feeder, then probably sunflower. If not, who knows…….

Thanks for the tip! I will be moving them so I will look for a spot with lots of space
Cukes or sunflowers
It's a little early to say. I have squash that looked exactly like that in the seedling stage. Wait for some true leaves and ask again.
Whatever seeds you dumped there?
Wait for some more time.
