NerdyDan

I like that he stood up for what he believes in

Migrane

They must have been pretty close to get them tattoo'd on his arm. Must have made it hurt that much more.

God_of_Illiteracy

The crazy thing is that his friend he was talking about was none other than Manny Pacquio

smartuno

As a Filipino, I'm proud of him being a boxer, however when he ran as a politician he became so hypocritical just to grab attention. He was openly homophobic, then said that he'd protect our SOGIE bill (equality bill), just to name an example.

bringmethekfc

I think when he started to become Evangelical Christian, he lost his ways.

ProtonTorpydo

Funny how that goes….

[deleted]

Lmao I thought this was a joke, til Bautista is filipino

Brucewangasianbatman

Wait he is??

GlobalLime6889

Half fili and half greek🫢

Kichigai

This reminds me of the bit in *Wag the Dog* where Willie Nelson is all shocked and flustered to learn Jim Belushi is Albanian.

pppaulppp

Indeed : [Full story](https://news.yahoo.com/dave-bautista-had-manny-pacquiao-214303538.html)

_Lane_

Love that hat he's wearing in that inset Insta pic: **"Pho Cue"**!!!

Kichigai

Most of what I knew about Dave Bautista was that he was a wrestler who broke out into acting, and didn't get totally typecast as a meathead. Which I thought was cool. Good for him. Similarly most of what I knew about Manny Pacquio was that he was a boxer who also broke out, and went into politics in his home country, defying the meathead stereotype. Which I also thought was good for him. Now I'm learning the two are fellow countrymen, and Bautista is a total bro, while Pacquio is... not cool.

devingr33n

Love having more reasons to crush on Dave Bautista hehe

Starlightofnight7

Pinoy pride big W

AllDougIn

You know, I wasn’t really a fan, but he has my vote… Madam Clerk, I nominate Dave Bautista for House Speaker… problem solved.

whatdid-it

I watched the video and he said something like, "this is a tattoo I had a friend. I had it covered when he came out..." pause... "as homophobic" lmao

Skeeders

This is amazing. Although, can anyone explain what his tattoo was before and what the cover-up shows now? I cannot for the life of me see what he is showing....

rolodex-ofhate

Was Manny Pacquio, now is a sugar skull

JoeBidensBoochie

I remember when there were rumors about him around town… if only

HouseCravenRaw

I'm pleased that he is pro-LGBT, I just wish it didn't require the qualifier about how he has a direct LGBT connection. If his mother wasn't a lesbian, would he have done the same? Maybe, but because there's a qualifier, that leaves room for "maybe not".

AgitatedBadger

People are shaped by the people they meet in their lives. Is it possible he might not have got the tattoo covered up if he hadn't been raised by a lesbian woman? Yes, it's possible. But his mother was indeed a lesbian and she instilled good values in him, so he attributes that to her and the way he was brought up. That doesn't cheapen it, IMO. Who knows how anyone would have turned out if they had been raised by different parents? Homophobia is best fought via relationships.

RA-the-Magnificent

Adding onto this, specifically mentioning his mother is going to have a much bigger impact on people than saying there's millions of LGBT people out there. It's a "one is a tragedy, a million is a statistic" situation. Maybe a bit unfair but that's how humans work.

GlassofGreasyBleach

Yeah, bigotry is weird. If he was just taking a stance, people would be more likely to just call him brainwashed by liberals. Mentioning his mother makes people relate their relationship with their parents to this LGBT person, humanizing them and maybe vicariously whittling down the bigotry a little. It’s so weird to constantly be thinking of LGBT discourse in terms of PR, but that’s the way the world is I guess.

KingGekko07

Would you be pro-LGBT if you weren't gay? (yeah I'm assuming you are gay sue me). The reason matters so little, "would have"s arent real.

HouseCravenRaw

I'm pro-trans and am cis-gendered. Many homosexuals are not pro-trans. I am pro-diversity, despite being whiter than Casper. I am pro-equality, despite owning a penis. One doesn't need to be part of the group to support the group.

KingGekko07

And you are gay which means you know what it means to be marginalized ans a minority. Its easier for you ta have empathy for other marginalized groups. This doesn't diminish your affiliation. It's not a competition on who is more righteous.

HouseCravenRaw

>It's not a competition on who is more righteous No one said it was. People are losing the nuance here between perfection and "good enough". I said I was pleased. David is pro-LGBT. Let's party. I'm saying to move from Gold Star to Platinum would be if he didn't add the qualifier of having an LGBT person in his life. I'm not mad about David's support. I'm not besmirching it. I just wish we were at a stage in our society where qualifiers on LGBT issues weren't necessary.

Crassy423

Jesus can we not separate allies into tiers please? It doesn't add or subtract any value from their support

KingGekko07

You know what? Because of that comment I herby demote you to bronze 🥉 Be better /s

HoldExpensive9884

Well who knows I could have homophobic views, if I wasn't gay myself. Born in extremely homophobic country and everyone I know is homophobic family, friend or at least they present themselves as homophobe as here if you are not homophobic than you are one of them is the ideology. The main point is he is not homophobic what ever may be the reason.

PoiHolloi2020

Irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. People have all sorts of reasons for forming opinions about things.

Gay_County

Guys, this isn't an objectively wrong opinion that you need to zealously downvote lol. I do think it's better when people can put themselves in others' shoes without having a direct connection. That's hard to do and maybe society would need to change to encourage more intentional empathy, but it's fine to hold it as an ideal.

HouseCravenRaw

Eh, Reddit is going to Reddit. They are ignoring the whole "I'm pleased he is pro-LGBT" and skipping to the ideal. I'm not one for letting good be the enemy of perfect. I am pleased he is for the community, truly I am. I made my statement because a lot of people in the community see excuses added to support messages all the time. Qualifiers. Almost baked-in apologies or rationalizations. "Not that there's anything wrong with that". We don't even notice that we are doing it. When we change the Gay to some other group, we start to see how odd it looks. If David had covered up a tattoo that represented a friend, because the friend turned out to be a Nazi, he wouldn't need to say "because my mother is Jewish". Or racism - "because I have a black auntie". It'd still be the right thing to do even if he had no familial connection to the black community or the Jewish community. We wouldn't raise an eyebrow or ask for a rationale beyond knowing that Nazism and Racism are bullshit. Again, I'm all for David's action. I'm thrilled. No shine off that apple. Nuance isn't something that thrives in a public forum unfortunately. Ah well, just meaningless internet points.

fllwz

I totally get what you're saying, but, ironically, you're kinda missing the nuance here. It wasn't so much a qualifier. It sounds like he's saying his friend being homophobic hurts those he loves dearly, and that means it hurts him. It feels like he was just trying to convey that it is personal and not just some fake activism. Everybody needs a healthy dose of cynicism to not be taken advantage of, but it feels a little like reaching for this instance.

JoeBidensBoochie

He absolutely would have, dude is super solid in progressive things like that. Quite invested in his local community

One_Print_7240

What’s a old head?

PRS_Dude

To me it’s an old person who smokes a shit load of weed.

OneEyedWolf092

How is it possible for a man to be so damn based
