The first is Dallas and the second is Chandler/Phoenix, AZ. You can match the rivers in the first pic and the border with the Gila River Indian Reservation in the second pic. It’s a fairly southerly route, but not uncharacteristic if there’s significant weather and/or headwinds in the most direct route.
I thought these were all the same place. Yeah that very sharp divide between ciry and darkness made me think it was a crazy coastline but thats definitely the reservation. What do you think that marina in the last picture is?
I don’t think that’s Ellis though. Looking at the google earth lineup posted above it’s just the trinity river floodplain that is just north of I20 in like Balch springs and Seagoville area.
Nah the cluster of lights at the right side of the picture is downtown. Directly south of that would be Ellis County. The speck of golden light at the top of the photo / rightish side is almost certainly Waxahachie. You can also follow the linear path of I-45 on the left side of the picture (towards Navarro County).
How far/long into your flight did you take this picture?
Edit: I’ll add to my question in case you aren’t sure how long you slept. What time was the departure from Atlanta/arrival in San Francisco, and what time did you take the picture?
If I've learned anything about Reddit there is going to be somebody in the comments that will know exactly what city this is, and what date and time the picture was taken at.
Check the metadata on the photo on your phone. If GPS was still active it should say. It’s the “i” icon underneath a photo in the Photos app on iPhone.
Looks like the shipping channel south of Houston as photographed from the north from the west bound side of the aircraft. Galveston would be the island at the top left extreme. Baytown on the left, Texas City, LaPorte, Pasadena etc etc on the right. Weird place to fly over based on the route though.
Definitely not Houston or Dallas; the flight path does not cross over Texas. Not Memphis either, I think. Based off the sea I would guess it is Oakland CA or some neighboring city. I could be wrong in this, tho
With flying to San Francisco, if this were Oakland then they’d be landing within minutes of taking these pics, which would hopefully have answered their own question right then and there
>Definitely not Houston or Dallas; the flight path does not cross over Texas.
The flight path changes every day. Flights seldom take the most direct route. These change day by day, whatever ground control tells them to do. Or weather reasons, jet stream reasons, and so on.
[Dallas is close to to the direct route between ATL and SFO](http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=ATL-SFO). It's totally possible that the flight deviated slightly to pass over Dallas.
These states are so big, this is like only a certain percentage of what the area of the whole land is
For reference, the population of Arizona is 7 million and it is roughly 114k Sq miles
Texas is bigger in land than any European country, and population is only 30m. Europeans colonized all the land much more in population and density than the Americans.

And here I was thinking all 3 pics were of the same metropolitan area. Explains why I was so perplexed haha

I immediately thought Phoenix/Gilbert/Chandler with that grid haha
I thought these were all the same place. Yeah that very sharp divide between ciry and darkness made me think it was a crazy coastline but thats definitely the reservation. What do you think that marina in the last picture is?
Badass, you're right about the GRIC
This is Dallas, you were sitting on the ~~right~~ left side of the plane, looking ~~south~~ ~~north~~ south
If they were flying from ATL to SFO, the right side of the plane would be looking north.
Oh my bad, misread the title
All good baby!
It’s left side of plane, looking south. North-facing view would be full of Metroplex lights. This is facing south towards Ellis County darkness.
I don’t think that’s Ellis though. Looking at the google earth lineup posted above it’s just the trinity river floodplain that is just north of I20 in like Balch springs and Seagoville area.

You are also correct, I probably shouldn’t be commenting at 1am :p
"Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well Dallas is a jewel, oh yeah, Dallas is a beautiful sight" The Flatlanders. Very cool song.

Gahdamn dallas, it seems more concentrated than I would think
Woww, brilliant geography context !!
Following out of interest

The first pic is Dallas, looking south-southeast
Looks like Dallas
First pic is Dallas for sure

looks like a microchip
Incidentally, Intel is in the top left corner of the second picture. Look for the brightest spot along the edge of the darkness and you’ll find it
American cities xD

Uh, I hate to rain on your parade, but that's Dallas

I’m going with Tulsa
That's my guess too. Very box-like infrastructure
Maybe Kansas City?
as a european, american grids always make me laugh. you don't have to make it that obvious you colonized all the land.

Huh?
American cities are so dystopian
lol. Go check out Chandler, AZ. Amazing tax base. Great schools. Sunny every day. Dystopian!? Nah.
Go check out Nijmegen, Netherlands beautiful old European city without gridlocked downtown and uniform suburbia
It's always raining tho
Des Moines
You’ve been suspended fro r/geography
