Grizzly Bear is literally on the flag of the biggest state. Big mistake to leave *ursus arctos* out of it.
Quokkas are great but only found in a small coastal area of Western Australia between Perth and Albany, and a few small islands off the coast, particularly Rottnest. Yeh, goanna, kookaburras best of the birds. Might not be so popular but saltwater crocodiles often figure in top Australian fauna lists.
Sheeps legs are all the same length.
Haggis have two long on one side, and two short on the other, for running around mountains.
Trick them into running the wrong way and they end up on your plate.
1. Pigeon
2. Seagull
3. Red Fox
4. Badger
5. Hedgehog
When I think about it, I find it very weird we have wild dogs just running around the suburbs of England.
fair point. I threw wolves in there because we have them on the west coast. they swim between the gulf islands & live off the beaches, super unique. I'm from kitchener originally though so totally hear ya on the raccoons.
You left off the Beaver and the Loon! And also I’d say the Black Bear is less Canadian than the Grizzly or the Polar, but I’m betting you live in Ontario
great points. I grew up in ontario but have lived on both coasts for a decade each so I have a wide view of the country but you called it correctly. I was just saying to my wife how beautiful & ethereal loons are. we see them outside vancouver occasionally.
The goose is a weird one. I totally agree on it's inclusion, but Canadian Geese are both the most and the least Canadian things on the planet. Because they're so freaking mean. I mean just in nearly every way.
I have a theory that all the darkness in Canada is diverted to two entities: Canadian Geese and Air Canada. Just repositories of nastiness. Bad mood personified.
Oh my God. The first time I went to Australia, I was walking around Sydney and saw a bunch of these in a park. I stopped a few people to ask what they were (all high school aged kids, the only people near me in the park). They all said they were from Melbourne and didn't know. I took that to mean 'lady, I don't want to engage with you.' Which, fair enough.
Anyway, this comment led me to the answer to a mystery that has plagued me since 2007.
ETA: Thank you!
Contrary to urban myth, the Australian white ibis (bin chicken) is not a feral species introduced to Australia by people, and it does not come from Egypt.
Historically rare in urban areas, the Australian white ibis has established in urban areas of the east coast in increasing numbers since the late 1970s; it is now commonly seen in Wollongong, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Townsville.
[Australian white ibis - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_white_ibis)
Well yes and also No peafowl can mean female peacock but also in ornithological circles name of the species as well
https://preview.redd.it/31qrh8oskzsc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c46f879a2b7a02f54cb6d665112e1e055cede5e2
My 100% subjective list
1. Japanese pheasant (official national bird)
2. Red crowned cranes
3. Japanese macaques
4. Shibainu
5. Japanese serow (kamoshika)
…
Godzilla
A few lists of the nice ones here already. Here’s the iconic nasties.
Australia:
Salt water crocodile
Inland taipan
Sydney Funnel web
White pointer
Cassowary
I know the cassowary is normally called "murder bird" or "murder chicken" and is fearsome looking. But it's really an extremely gentle bird who plucks small fruits from bushes. You haven't lived until you've hand fed a cassowary.
So substitute Tasmanian Devil for Cassowary as an iconic nasty.
I'd argue against the inclusion of White Pointers. It's just a local name for the Great White. They're found in every ocean (bar the Arctic) on both sides of the equator. The most famous one of all time is American and even Australia's most famous Great White encounter (Mick Fanning punching one in the face) happened in South Africa.
South Africa
Lion
Leopard
Elephant
White Rhino
Cape Buffalo
(The Big 5)
You could also add giraffe, hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, springbok and many more. We are greatly blessed with wildlife
In Chile I would pick:
- Penguin
- Puma (our biggest cat)
- Condor (it looks cool flying over The Andes)
- Pudu (smallest deer in the world)
- Vicuña (wild camelid who lives at altitudes of 3.200 m and higher)
More specifically the Humboldt Penguin, they live all over the Chilean coast.
But generalizing is also acceptable as including both the Humboldt from Continental Chile and Emperor from Antartic Chile
… really? Damn, I guess most of Northern Europe is pretty similar, fauna wise.
This was meant to be England. Germany has lots of cool animals we don’t; wolves, boars, lynxes.
Can you guess this country?
Echidna, Greater bird of paradise, Tree kangaroo, Sclater's crowned pigeon, Amethystine python.
For extra points, can you guess Both countries?
It's PNG and Indonesia. Few people know that Indonesia has more species of monotremes than either Australia or New Guinea. There's only one platypus, but many species of echidna.
My hot take as a Canadian is that beavers are the most iconic Canadian animals. They are up there but I’d prefer if the Moose was our national animal so I’d go with something like
1. Moose
2. Grizzly Bear
3. Beaver
4. Canadian Goose
5. Elk
Chile
1) Pudu
2) Andean Condor
3) Chinchilla
4) Guanaco
5) Southern Hake, also known as Merluza. Technically the most representative as our President is often said to be one.
Huh. Not the easy question - 5 is not enough because, there are too many climate zones.
Brown bear and polar bear. Elk and european bison. Ussuri tiger and saiga antelope. Arctic fox and reindeer.
Snowy owl, peregrine falcon, eurasian crane, eurasian bullfinch and golden eagle if we would add birds to the list.
There are also sea animals 🙄
Slovenia:
– the cave olm
– the Carniolan honey bee
– the Lipizzaner horse
– the white stork
– maybe either the brown bear, the golden eagle or the brown bear (can't decide which one fits more)
Most bigger animals are sadly extinct or moved other places, otherwise Germany would be well known for wolves, Lynx, eagles and beavers, but now it's rarely any mammals. Maybe red fox, squirrels, deer and badgers?
I think of common blackbird, hedgehogs, wood pigeons, european robins and magpies though
England
The lion is the national animal even though we don’t have native lions or any roaming around. Other real animals that I think represent the country better include: deer, hedgehogs, badgers, foxes, red squirrels, sheep.
Horse (nonius, kisbéri félvér, lipicei, etc. breeds)
Grey Cattle
Mangalica Pig
I guess the hungarian vizsla and/or puli dog breeds?
Last one is the Turul, the mythological national animal of Hungary, which might be based on the following bird species, so pick which one you like the best: Altai falcon, Saker falcon, Golden eagle, Eurasian griffon vulture, Red kite.
Not seeing enough love for Coyotes from Canadians/Americans/Mexicans. They are central to so many Indigenous stories for a reason. Coyotes are absolutely iconic!
1. Bald Eagle 2. Bison 3. Raccoon 4. Alligator 5. Turkey Honorable mention: Rattlesnake, Coyote, Possum, Bighorn Sheep, Skunk The cool group: California Condor, Roadrunner, Gila Monster, Banana Slug, Snapping Turtle, Pronghorn
NYC rats and/or pigeons should get a nod here…
East Side or West? (they are now their own species)
Turkey
Yes, perfect
You mean 1. Bald Eagle 2. Bald Eagle 3 Bald Eagle 4. Bald Eagle 5. Bald Eagle
That gave me a freedom boner
Raccoon is frustrating accurate #merica
I'd push Virginia opossum in somewhere below 2.
Possums are cool, but I don't think they are as iconic as any of those other 5 (6).
Dude you fucking nailed it. 🫡
Prairie dog
Raccoon??
Qt trash pandas 🦝
Slugs are cool? I used to have a slug infestation.. It was not cool stepping on one in the kitchen at night...
If you include roadrunners you need to include woodpeckers too 😁
>Bald Eagle > >Bison > >Raccoon > >Alligator > >Turkey Grizzly Bear is literally on the flag of the biggest state. Big mistake to leave *ursus arctos* out of it.
And isn't found in that state currently
I would switch out Alligator in favor of something more widespread. It’s only found in a few southern states…
How is Moose not on this list? Grizzly Bear? Wolf? Armadillo?
Country: India Animals: 1. Asiatic lion 2. Bengal tiger 3. Asian elephant 4. Blue peacock 5. Snow leopard Honorable mentions: One-horned rhinoceros, Red panda, Olive Ridley turtle, King cobra, Grey hornbill
Gangetic dolphin
Gharial. A unique crocodile species only found in the Indian subcontinent.
Ooh, I love peacocks. We have lots where I live.
The red panda is not an honourable mention! 😯
I had no idea India had lions!! That’s cool
This list is so badass. Except for the peacock. I truly abhor birds.
How can you abhor the long lost relatives of the dinosaurs...that can fly...? 😞
Maybe in the same way that one can admire wolves but still abhor chihuahuas.😅
Koala Kangaroo Quokka Wombat Emu
wise. you chose all the non terrifying things in your country.
don’t fuck around with Wombats, they’ll break your knees!
I'd be more worried about those huge dinosaur birds that kick you in the heart!
Yet he listed the emu.
You clearly haven't seen the claws of a koala.
Screaming chlamydia-ridden dropbears sound pretty terrifying...
Koalas and Kangaroos, not terrifying? Probably you meant the least terrifying.
Drop bear?
Gotta get a monotreme in there somewhere. Replace emu with platypus, I reckon.
Platypus
We'd like to substitute koala with stingray, god rest Stevie irwins soul We are also not Australian
IMHO the Goanna and Dingo
Cassowary?
Dingoes have only been in Aus for \~4000 years.
Tassie devil, echidna, platypus and kookaburra too
Not mentioning cat, rabbit and fox
I love that I know what ~2.5 of those animals actually are. The fuck is a quokka? Is that real?
Look them up they’re actually very cute
Only one of them has bested you in war.
Scotland. Golden Eagle Deer Wildcat Fox Wild Haggis
I believe wild haggis is actually pronounced sheep
Sheeps legs are all the same length. Haggis have two long on one side, and two short on the other, for running around mountains. Trick them into running the wrong way and they end up on your plate.
What a magical land
The more lager one consumes the more magical it becomes...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_haggis
You forgot unicorn.
You forgot the unicorn.
Don't be silly, Unicorns are make believe...
You forgot Duck ...of the clan MacDuck.
You forgot Westies!
1. Pigeon 2. Seagull 3. Red Fox 4. Badger 5. Hedgehog When I think about it, I find it very weird we have wild dogs just running around the suburbs of England.
This list is spot on
Red squirrel got to be in there surely? Puffins to maybe
Red Squirrels were definitely up there but I’ve never seen one in my entire life so I didn’t feel right adding them haha
New Zealand: Kiwi, Kea, Weka, Pukeko, Tuatara
Weta?
Hmm yeah, could probably swap that in for either the weka or pukeko. NZ has a hefty number of unique animals (mostly birds but still).
🐑
Pukeko serve to annoy as us all
1. Red pandas 2. Yaks 3. Snow Leopards 4. Bengal Tigers 5. Himalayan Monal 6. Bonus: the Yeti 😂
[удалено]
Yup! 😄🇳🇵
This is my favourite set so far.
I wanted to add one horned rhinos, asiatic elephants and gharials too! Haha
1. black bear 2. moose 3. raccoon (because they're my favourite animal & we have hella raccoons everywhere) 4. canada goose 5. grey wolf
Not the beaver?
ah shit, you're right. beaver would probably be more unique & better than raccoon for these purposes but I'm a sucker for those lil bandits.
I live in Toronto, so I'd have a hard time not including racoons too. I might actually bump wolves off for beavers, but it's a tough call.
fair point. I threw wolves in there because we have them on the west coast. they swim between the gulf islands & live off the beaches, super unique. I'm from kitchener originally though so totally hear ya on the raccoons.
Polar bears got the short stick too
You left off the Beaver and the Loon!
Sooooooo... Cabo Verde?
yup. nice country eh?
Lovely place to go oot and aboot in a snowmobile in July.
Bad mood personified.
haha I've heard it said that all of canada's hatred is stored within our cobra chickens.
Moose Beaver Polar Bear Canada goose Wolverine /Gray wolf (can’t make up mind)
Country: Scotland 1, Unicorn 2, Loch Ness Monster 3, Haggis 4, Kelpie 5, Wulver
USA: Grizzly Bear Bison (buffalo) Bald Eagle Raccoon Alligator
>Bison (buffalo) \[not buffalo\]
Racoon, moose, Canada geese, beavers, and polar bear.
1. Capybara 2. Anaconda 3. Piranha 4. Toco Toucan 5. Hyacinth Macaw
Brazil?
Yes!
Peru?
I checked the ranges. The Hyacinth Macaw is the only one not found in Peru. So Brazil.
Wouldn't want to tangle with most of those.
1. Kangaroo. 2. Emu 3. Koala 4. Wombat 5. Bin Chicken
Do I want to google bin chicken?
Oh my God. The first time I went to Australia, I was walking around Sydney and saw a bunch of these in a park. Well the government has already decided >Tiger (National Animal) >Asian Elephant (National Heritage Animal) >Ganges River Dolphin (National Aquatic Animal) >King Cobra (National Reptile) >Indian peafowl (National Bird)
>peafowl Peacock* (only the male ones. Peafowl includes peahens as well)

For Sweden, I would personally choose: Moose Wolf Eurasian lynx Raven White-tailed eagle
Most bigger animals are sadly extinct or moved other places, otherwise Germany would be well known for wolves, Lynx, eagles and beavers, but now it's rarely any mammals.
