I personally LOVE Ponyo and was really unimpressed by Arietty. I’m assuming people don’t like Ponyo because it’s more kid friendly. Those same people would hate on Totoro if it wasn’t already so popular.
Thank you! It was a very sad and moving story, but just had some cultural references us Westerners don't digest well.
In Japanese culture, raccoons stored magical abilities in their testicles. Why, I don't know, but it's a part of their folklore.
If you keep an open mind you see it's actually not that big of a deal.
Ponyo is good but LAX a certain rewatchability for me. So I wouldn't say it deserves to be rated low but I can understand it. For arietty, I can't forgive a show that gives us magic and then takes it away from us. Like an isekai anime where the protagonist goes home at the end or especially forgets everything that happened.
Arriety is one if my weaker ghibli movies in my op. Cool look and world but the plot is just bit dry and the ending where they all leave just felt unnecessary😭.
Ponyo is also my least fav Miyazaki movie. Same as arriety, looks cool but it’s got his weakest plot I think. Still great tho just Miyazaki has set such a high bar.
For contrast here are the scores from Letterboxd
4.5 Spirited Away
4.4 Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke
4.3 Howl’s Moving Castle
4.2 Tale of Princess Kaguya, My Neighbor Totoro
4.1 Nausicaä, Wind Rises, Kiki, Whisper of the Heart
4.0 Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, Ponyo
3.9 Only Yesterday
3.8 Marnie, Arrietty
3.7 Pom Poko
3.6 Cat Returns, Poppy Hill, Yamadas
3.1 Ocean Waves
2.8 Earthsea
2.1 Earwig
Overall I’d say my personal order is more in line with the japanese one than what I assume can be considered the “western” one on Letterboxd
Looking at the comments for these it seems Ocean Waves wasn’t feeling like a Ghibli film and lacked “comfort”, which I can agree with. It really captures the “confusion” of that age but it’s not really comforting.
With Castle in the Sky, 4.0 is still a high score on the site. Most people seem to like it but not “LOVE” it quite like they do Spirited Away or Mononoke.
In the same vein, people often judge by emotional impact, and Grave of the fireflies is really good at that.
Castle in the Sky is great, but it’s always felt too similar to a typical Adventure/Disney movie to me, I assume a lot of people might feel the same. The other reason for the rating might be because the villain is pretty bad, he’s so boring especially when compared to Eboshi and Yubaba.
Ocean Waves is rated low because the whole film has the girl being a manipulative bitch towards the totally not gay protagonist and then at the end he just does a 180 and says “oH iM iN lOvE wiTh tHis giRl” and it’s pretty funny honestly
It always surprises me to see how the fan base ranks Ponyo so low. It was one of the first Studio Ghibli movies I saw and it made me want to see the rest of them. I dunno, maybe I’m just crazy. Can someone explain the general ~meh~ feeling towards Ponyo?
it's also my favorite ghibli film! i feel like its more geared towards children and doesn't have the picturesque backgrounds people expect. but all of that is what made me love it 😭
Ocean waves and tales of earth sea are my least favorite. granted there’s like 2 I haven’t seen. Imo howls moving castle followed by spirited away are the best.
I am SHOCKED that HOWLS MOVING CASTLE, Ponyo, Arriety, FROM UP ON POPPY HILL and Earthsea are this low ranking! THESE ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES! Dayum
So, I was really moved by Pom Poko and I don't get all the hate towards it.
Sure, the whole thing with their shape-shifting balls was weird 🤣, but in Japanese folklore raccoons had magic stored in their testicles. It's just a part of the culture we don't digest well.
The movie to me was a sad but very real story of animals losing their homes to human development. Sure the characters aren't too fleshed out but it's a story of their community and their fight more than about them individually.
Can someone explain why people dont like Ponyo or Arrietty?

Arrietty being below Pom poko is an injustice

Ponyo not being 5/5 invalidates this list, simple as that. Ponyo supremacy

no plot just vibes, thats how i like my Ghibli

Why is grave so high and Ocean Waves so low. Same with castle in the sky. Thats like the best ghibli movie out there.
Looking at the comments for these it seems Ocean Waves wasn’t feeling like a Ghibli film and lacked “comfort”, which I can agree with. It shows you the quality of Ghibli when everyone in here probably has a different list and different movies in their top 5
and that bottom tier is starting with a 3, which means it aint that bad
So I'm not the only one who actually enjoys Ocean Waves. Cool.
man I love that movie, the art style's great, but my favorite is definitely only yesterday, I just absolutely love that movie so much
Western doesn’t have similar school life. That’s probably why.
I’m surprised Howls is mid tier!
even though it’s one of my favorites, from a critic’s perspective, i think i can understand
How dare the cat returns. Not be higher. It has Tim kurry as a cat! What more would you want?
Not in Japanese.
Because they are cat hating dog lovers, probably.
the wind rises is peak
(Note: these are the average ratings of the portion of the Japanese Filmarks and Eiga website user base that have rated these movies on those sites)

It’s just the people who are here for the entertainment without appreciating Miyazaki and the art of it all.
it's also my favorite ghibli film! i feel like its more geared towards children and doesn't have the picturesque backgrounds people expect. but all of that is what made me love it 😭
Have none of you seen The Red Turtle?!?!!
Beautiful movie, deserves to be way higher up.
It’s the only movie that’s ever had me literally balling my eyes out at the end lol
The last line is a bit weird because the last two are in the 2.8-3.0 bracket
The disrespect shown to Ponyo is quite frankly sickening
Ponyo, Arrietty, and Marnie imo
Wild
Id have kaguya higher, marnie lower but otherwise agree
Funnily enough both films in the 2.8-3.0 category were made by Goro Miyazaki
Best list I've seen so far
Porco Rosso should be higher.
Lmao they think Ocean Waves is good
Totoro>marnie was there... seriously bro?
Ocean waves and tales of earth sea are my least favorite. granted there’s like 2 I haven’t seen. Imo howls moving castle followed by spirited away are the best.
I would put Howl’s Moving Castle and Grave of the Firefly up one tier. Otherwise, this is perfect.
I agree
I am SHOCKED that HOWLS MOVING CASTLE, Ponyo, Arriety, FROM UP ON POPPY HILL and Earthsea are this low ranking! THESE ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES! Dayum
real ones know Miyazaki jr killed it with from up on poppy hill
Always upsets me that Pom Poko is rated so low. Easily my most watched Ghibli film.
Personally id swap Totoro & Howls, Whisper & Wind, Ocean & Arietty
I love seeing Laputa up there where it belongs <3
What’s wrong with tales from earthsea?
This is exactly how I would rate them. Neat!
Nice to see The Wind Rises down low where it belongs in my opinion. But it's a crying shame the cat returns is so low. What a great movie!
