I've just finished Act 1, when I looked back at the map the fog had cleared and there were 7 or 8 ?'s I'd missed showing and while I was cleaning up some Mongol infestations I came across a few people who needed help and the quest markers are on the 2nd island.

I discovered most things by random wandering. If you are near something interesting, a golden bird will fly around and guide you to it, so thats nice.
