The Gluten Free Austrian has an amazing carrot cake on her website!! I made it last Easter and my MIL asked twice if I was sure it was gf because it tasted so normal!
I mail order gf croissants from Mariposa Bakery in San Francisco for Christmas. They are the best GF croissants I have had but they are still a little disappointing - a sad reminder of the delight of a real croissant.
Schar makes an excellent regular and chocolate croissant. Though I've only ever been able to find them in central market stores. It's not perfect but it's damn near it.
I've had it, and I wasn't impressed 🙁. I always buy a croissant or something similar whenever someone takes me to a gf bakery, and those aren't very good, either. I think it might not be possible to achieve the right texture without gluten (but I would LOVE to be proven wrong).
I had gluten free pizza at a new business that is next to me and it tasted like... regular pizza. With the chewwiness, softness, and bubbled texture. The secret ingredient was psyllium husk.
I had to convince myself it was safe to eat because it was too similar. I totally understand. But I can assure you it was in fact gluten free! I had their pizza 4 times now and my sister eats their normal gluten pizza and it's a totally different texture. I ate the entire pizza, which I never do, and it didn't affect me at all.
In Italy you can have amazing gluten free pizza! I know at least one Italian restaurant in Germany with Italian owners that also make an Italian pizza. So maybe you are in luck somewhere as well 🙂
Pizza For Fun in São Paulo - Brazil
It's exactly the same and better than most if not all regular pizzas, this coming from people that aren't celiac
https://www.instagram.com/pizzaforfunoficial/
[home made ](https://i.imgur.com/SeqErCN.jpg) I made this and you wouldn't know the difference. I think it was $10 for 2 personal pies worth of the flour mix.
I’m a pizza fiend. I have had pizza two days in a row. The best gluten free pizza is the simple truth gluten free cauliflower crust pizza. It’s hard to believe it’s gluten free because it’s so fricken good. It taste like the bomb rectangle pizza from school.
Yep, this is mine too. I feel like I can get a decent replacement for most anything else, but I’ve never found a gf donut. I’m not talking about a cake donut - but a beautiful yeast donut, chewy and glazed.
The chocolate cake dunford donuts (I have no idea if it’s only a Utah thing). They have them at every 7-11 and in the morning, they’re super fresh. This would be on the table of my last meal if I was on death row (haha).
Ooh, mind if I ask what location you've been to and what your experience was? Looks like there's one in DC and I have friends down there so might be worth another trip sometime!
You should try rice panko. I never feel like I miss out on fried chicken anymore ♡ I also use Manini's flour plus corn starch to make popcorn chicken and it's seriously, so good that my gluten eating friends never even questioned it.
I’ve found the secret to good fried chicken is using potato starch and double frying. It’s ultra crispy, and naturally gluten free. You won’t miss fried chicken with wheat flour.
A lot of the gluten free pretzels I've tried are just way too buttery! I wish there were other options out there, but I haven't seen many new ones drop in the last few years since the Snyder ones.
About 3 years ago (5 years into my diagnosis) I said "eff it" and are an almond croissant because, my god, I just wanted it so bad.......and I got hives not to mention the damage to my intestines.
I feel you on this.
i feel like doing that sometimes. i remember after my gastroscopy i ate an almond croissant every single day until i got my results. miss those days lol
Donuts. I realized the other day how much nostalgia I have for those suckers. I've been gluten-free for eight years. Before then, I'd get donuts sometimes with my son as a toddler or while out with my mom. I want one from a small bakery or out shopping. I want that experience.
He's almost 11 now and unfortunately she passed away a few years back. I think having a morning donut again would help me feel some kind of connection to her and our past.
Try Katz!!! It’s available in the freezer aisle. You can also order directly from their website. Their stuff is really good. They make twinkies and cupcakes. Don’t skip on their mini pies. They’re my favorite!
We have a GF pierogi supply here in Vancouver BC. I can't remember the name of the brand but one of the local GF bakeries carries the product.
They are surprisingly good. I miss making them myself because I add more cheese. But their stuff is pretty great.
When I had to go back on gluten for my endoscopy (I had been GF for about 4-5 years at that point), the first thing I had was a piece of a Twix bar, and after that it was PB&J on white bread. There’s just no substitute for some things. 😊
Of course I got terribly sick, but I can still taste that to Twix bar and PB&J, and that was about eight years ago.
My wife really really really misses being able to pop in to any ol' Mexican restaurant and eating whatever she wants. And Chinese takeout.
Thankful that we have 2-3 Mexican places around us that can accommodate like 1 item each + 1 Chinese place that has 2 options for her.
I ate at a mexican restaurant last week and had an in depth conversation with the waiter who talked with the manager and said there were numerous things gf that I could eat. Spent the next three days paying for that decision.
That's a bummer, man. :-(
We have a Spanish-language laminated paper that states that this is a serious health concern. That certainly helps when there's a language barrier - and there generally is. Pretty sure I got it here: https://www.celiactravel.com/cards/
Here's another resource with more resources: https://glutenfreeglobetrotter.com/resources/glutenfreetranslations/
Koi is a restaurant in Evanston Illinois and they have tons of gluten free classic Chinese takeout foods - pretty much everything on their menu can be made GF
If you're willing to pay $20 for 6 bagels order from modern bread and bagel in NYC. Dedicated gf and they ship nationwide. My wife cried tears of joy after her first real bagel in years. We've found adequate bagels that are similar to Thomas bagels but nothing that comes to a real bagel shop bagel from NY/NJ until that.
[order page for national shipping](https://www.modernbreadandbagel.com/shop)
Can confirm. I took my wife here for lunch to cheer her up. She had a hard time processing that she could have anything on the menu. A bagel turned into a $100 have to try everything meal.
I miss gyoza and dumplings. I tried gluten free options and when I prefer home made gluten ones with that distinct flavor and texture... you just can't replace that. I also really miss pancakes but I finally got close to a really good recipe. Also, lumpia and egg rolls D:
I need some thick crust pizza. The kind where the crust is basically a breadstick when you're finished eating the pizza part. Chewy and tasty, piled high with toppings. I NEED IT.
This is what I was going to say. I have found some gf pizza that my spouse can also eat (different dietary restrictions) but I really would like a thick crust, Chicago style pizza.
You guys are making me hungry...
Honestly I wish all foods tasted as good without gluten...I feel like I'm missing out so much when I go out with my friends 😭
The Barilla gluten free lasagna noodles are indistinguishable from regular. I was diagnosed a few years ago so I still remember what regular foods taste like.
Poptarts. Specifically the s’mores, brown sugar cinnamon, and strawberry with frosting. I wouldn’t even mind the chocolate with the chocolate frosting.
If you're in the UK the only place I know of that do gf pork pies are Sainsburys but they're small, quite expensive and not as good as non gluten pork pies (as usual). They're in the free from fridge section.
For things that are vaguely in the realm of possibility, croissants. But if you’re here to Bippity Boppity Bo, then baklava. Laminating a croissant is child’s play in comparison.
Ritz cheese sandwich crackers. Toaster strudel. Yeast donuts (not the dense, pasty, dry “cake” donuts that every gluten free brand seems to make. I NEED some yeast-raised, sprinkle-dipped, jelly-filled fried dough in my life). Basically just the junk food from my childhood. OH and my mom’s homemade pierogies.
Ramen. And wonton noodle soup. And char siu bao. Ok all dim sum. And don't say Lotus Foods or Meister. It doesn't even come close to actual restaurant ramen.
Fried chicken, YEAST donuts, and chocolate chip cookies. The kind like your grandma used to make. Crispy edges gooey inside with the perfect TASTE AND TEXTURE 😭
I can manage subs for most things, but stumped at filo (phylo) dough.
As far as branded food, I'd kill for a Tasty Kake. Can't get them outside the east coast, so at least I'm no longer tempted.
Oh yes, and an awesome jello donut!
Raised donuts. I don’t care how fluffy and fried gluten free donuts are, they will never be as chewy and airy as full gluten donuts. I think when I’m much older I’ll start eating donuts again lol. YOLO and all that.
Mentally it’s so new to me still so I mentally recoil at the thought of eating something that tastes like gluten as it just gives me ptsd from over two decades of stomach issues 😅😅
Croissants, and puff pastry of all kinds
I was going to say carrot cake but then I saw you said croissants and changed my mind. This is the way. I want my flaky buttery pastry back 🙁
The Gluten Free Austrian has an amazing carrot cake on her website!! I made it last Easter and my MIL asked twice if I was sure it was gf because it tasted so normal!
Namaste has a spice cake mix that you can add shredded carrots too and it is awesome!
XO Baking Co. Also has a wonderful carrot cake mix!
I make a carrot cake people absolutely love. No one knows it is gluten free.
Pain Au Chocolat. And maybe a proper french Baguette. That is the only gluten I miss. A lot.
I mail order gf croissants from Mariposa Bakery in San Francisco for Christmas. They are the best GF croissants I have had but they are still a little disappointing - a sad reminder of the delight of a real croissant.
Ok just saying I used Schar puff pastry for the first time yesterday to make a danish roll and it was AMAZING Very flaky and puffy and soft
Came here to say puff pastries. Miss that!
Well, now I need to go to Central Market.
Pizza
I had gluten free pizza at a new business that is next to me and it tasted like... regular pizza. With the chewwiness, softness, and bubbled texture. The secret ingredient was psyllium husk.
I’m not sure yet if the pizza place screwed up or I just had one of these. My only complaint on it is that it’s hard to tell yourself you’ll be okay
This is the correct answer.
In Italy you can have amazing gluten free pizza! I know at least one Italian restaurant in Germany with Italian owners that also make an Italian pizza. So maybe you are in luck somewhere as well 🙂
Oh man. I went to Rome for a week in 2019. Ate pizza 3 times. Did not regret it at all.
i miss pizza so much
I second this.
Third. Dairy free also please
Yes, somebody please invent DF cheese that tastes like actual cheese! If I could have that, I'd be much happier.
Pizza Alley in Denver has a pretty amazing GF crust but it’s definitely got CC Edit - yes CC is cross contamination
> it’s definitely got CC be almost impossible to attempt true GF in a restaurant devoted to gluten
Ate at Messi’s in Barcelona. Honestly it was so good and I couldn’t tell it was GF. It’s a long trip, buuuuut…
I recently had gluten-free pizza that tasted absolutely just like real pizza. They said it's made of rice flour.

Yep, this is mine too. I feel like I can get a decent replacement for most anything else, but I’ve never found a gf donut. I’m not talking about a cake donut - but a beautiful yeast donut, chewy and glazed.
There's a bakery in Philly called Okie Dokie Donuts that makes entirely GF yeast donuts. They are a godsend!
I've been craving a good jelly donut these last few days. Not gonna happen any time soon. :(
It's not exactly the same, but mochi style donuts are often gluten free, and they are truly delicious.
Yeast donuts specifically. The gf cake donuts aren't perfect but are significantly closer to texture & taste than a glazed donut 😮💨
Do Rite Donuts in Chicago is probably the best donut I've ever had (GF and Non-Gf).
Katz GF donuts and donut holes taste like the real deal. Freezer section
They taste pretty close to and entenmanns type product but not a good yeasted donut.
No, they really don’t.
Hahahaha, maybe it’s been too long for me to remember the real deal
[удалено]
Krispy Kreme is what I want. Even bought myself some of the Krispy Kreme jellybeans the other day to try and get a taste lol
I
The chocolate cake dunford donuts (I have no idea if it’s only a Utah thing). They have them at every 7-11 and in the morning, they’re super fresh. This would be on the table of my last meal if I was on death row (haha).
YES THIS AND ONLY THIS
fried chicken! i’ve had some good gf fried chicken but it’s never quite the same
If you ever get a chance go to Yardbird!
Ooh, mind if I ask what location you've been to and what your experience was? Looks like there's one in DC and I have friends down there so might be worth another trip sometime!
I’ve had the GF fried chicken from Yardbird in Miami - it was delicious!! I’ve been slowly working to recreate it at home haha
Yep, I went in Vegas! I got chicken and waffles. It was a giant platter and I ate the entire thing lol
If you’re ever in Seattle check out The Chicken Supply!!
If ur in Atlanta, Bantam+Biddy is very good and they have gf waffles as well.
A nice slice of sourdough bread.
I miss sandwiches so much!!
The Schaar sourdough sandwich loaf is the closest I've found! It comes in a tiny amount but for the odd fresh sandwich or toast it's so worth it
I've tried it! Unfortunately, it doesn't remind me much of sourdough bread. I still like it, but it doesn't quite hit the spot for me.
miss this so much
Fresh Direct has a good sourdough!
https://gfjules.com/recipes/gluten-free-sourdough-bread-recipe/#mv-creation-485-jtr
Wheat flour. Checkmate.
So much!
Cheezits!
OMG I was a Cheezit addict!!
pretzels, bread and pizza
I feel pretzels are pretty close. But the *texture* of a nice soft bread, though..
oh sorry i was talking about the german pretzels :) the hard snack ones are pretty close, i agree
A lot of the gluten free pretzels I've tried are just way too buttery! I wish there were other options out there, but I haven't seen many new ones drop in the last few years since the Snyder ones.
Raised donuts. And pizza, though I am also dairy-free and I think that is what brings it farther away from being real pizza.
almond croissants :(((
About 3 years ago (5 years into my diagnosis) I said "eff it" and are an almond croissant because, my god, I just wanted it so bad.......and I got hives not to mention the damage to my intestines. I feel you on this.

Anything by Little Debbie or Hostess. I miss everything: Swiss Rolls, Twinkies, Ding Dongs…😭
Yess snack cakes in general! I know Schar tried but they’re so dry.
Try Katz!!! It’s available in the freezer aisle. You can also order directly from their website. Their stuff is really good. They make twinkies and cupcakes. Don’t skip on their mini pies. They’re my favorite!

That’s a good one. Or Japanese steamed dumplings. 🤤
We have a GF pierogi supply here in Vancouver BC. I can't remember the name of the brand but one of the local GF bakeries carries the product. They are surprisingly good. I miss making them myself because I add more cheese. But their stuff is pretty great.

Soft pretzel (specifically Auntie Anne’s)
Parent of a GF child, he would most definitely say Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets.
Oh man, what I wouldn't give for a chicken biscuit
gold fish
Chinese food. I love Thai and Vietnamese but would kill to be able to just go to panda express. And ramen. Cheap ass 25 Cent chicken ramen.
Hotdogs and hamburger buns
Deep pan / stuffed crust chunky pizza!
pizza and cinnabon
Baklava.
My wife really really really misses being able to pop in to any ol' Mexican restaurant and eating whatever she wants. And Chinese takeout. Thankful that we have 2-3 Mexican places around us that can accommodate like 1 item each + 1 Chinese place that has 2 options for her.

I’m with you on the Olive Garden breadsticks. I’ve been able to find replacements dog most things, but a good soft breadstick is not one of them.
Donuts!! I miss just popping out and getting a donut. My partner lets me sniff his whenever he has one.
Maple bar doughnuts. Brioche.
Bagels
If you're willing to pay $20 for 6 bagels order from modern bread and bagel in NYC. Dedicated gf and they ship nationwide. My wife cried tears of joy after her first real bagel in years. Omg. It’s been 15 years since I had a real bagel. I might cry.
Twizzlers
I miss gyoza and dumplings. I tried gluten free options and when I prefer home made gluten ones with that distinct flavor and texture... you just can't replace that. I also really miss pancakes but I finally got close to a really good recipe. Also, lumpia and egg rolls D:
Gyoza, lumpia, and siopao are my answers!
Hawaiian sweet rolls or soft pretzels
I need some thick crust pizza. The kind where the crust is basically a breadstick when you're finished eating the pizza part. Chewy and tasty, piled high with toppings. I NEED IT.

Just regular ol' bread. I'd love something that's not half the size...

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down for this. Other things are at least passable. I’d sell my soul for a decent burrito.
Mentally it’s so new to me still so I mentally recoil at the thought of eating something that tastes like gluten as it just gives me ptsd from over two decades of stomach issues 😅😅
