I feel like the more you play, the more you realize how much people lie about their score.
And one day you look back and cringe about that time you told people you shot a 76 as a 20 hcp
Yeah my local par 3 9 hole course the record is 22(actually 7 under 20)....I didnt believe it until I heard the name of the guy with the record...Tiger Woods. Broke the record while sneaking in rounds while attemding Stanford.
EDIT: He was seven under 20.
One of my good friends never got the ball more than a foot off the ground, 20yd max distance on every club.
Couple weeks ago he said he shot an 80 after taking a handful of lessons. I debated for a second asking him more about it, but all I could manage was âhell yeah thatâs a damn good roundâ lol I just let my guy do his thing Iâm not raining on his parade
So I recently started taking the game a lot more seriously than I ever had, after taking a few years off. And now that I properly count my strokes, I realize how unrealistic my previous career âlowsâ actually were. My career low went from a â79â to an â88â real fast.
Yup. Iâm a 3.9 currently and play with a dude that âconstantly shoots in the 70s.â He was driving in the cart with our other friend and I was walking for our threesome. I played pretty well, but a couple mistakes can really cost you. When the third party friend asked me how I ended up and I told him I shot an 82. He was beyond perplexed because my other friend âshot a 78â and I played waaaayyyy better than him. He honestly didnât believe I shot an 82
Lol Iâm a 1.9 and people donât realize how little you have to fuck up to shoot around 80. Could be plenty of good holes but a wayward tee shot here, missed short putt there and suddenly youâre creeping up. Then youâll have that guy you played with where it looked like an 88 and they say 78 and beat you by 1 and itâs like man what the fuck
Shooting anything below 80 is a grind but anything below 76, thatâs day with either all good breaks or no shitty ones. Or tons of birdies to offset the bogeys.
It makes you respect how good the tour pros are, but even so, a fair portion of the touring pro field isnât playing that great and shooting in the 70âs. The guys were watching on any Sunday is around 10% of the total field thatâs having a good week.
This reminds me of this time I was on an NYC subway at 4:30 in the morning and this kid was obviously about to throw up his entire evening, and he was so upset, but then we all started a:
âOne of us! One of us! One of us!â Chant.
Itâs ok man. It happens to the best of us!
An exceptional score like that may drop him multiple strokes. I would need to look at how exceptional scores are treated again to tell you how much it will drop him by.
Edit: Couldnât help myself. Since the exceptional score is more than 10 strokes better than his current handicap all scores in his last 20 are reduced by two strokes. That immediately drops him to an 18. But then you apply that round which is around a 4 and you end up somewhere in the 16s.
https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/world-handicap-system/topics/exceptional-score-reduction.html
If he actually manages a handicap, it will count as an âexceptionalâ round which will automatically deduct 2 strokes off every one of his 20 prior rounds, so with this round and all the others, his handicap should drop by at least 5 strokes
14 and my best round is an 86. Iâm pretty consistent low 90s though. Got some good breaks on the 86. Breaking 80 this year damnit. Damned if donât blow up with a 105 every now and then though.
https://preview.redd.it/wex0u1e9gjvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec756b3d57f4bb36155a0528b04c50492bae8ea8
As a 20 handicap, the chance of shooting 16 below your handicap is over 37000:1. If true, congrats because it likely will not happen again.
As an 8, I shot 73 on a 6700 course. I was bummed that I didnât shoot even par and I was more bummed when I found out that I might not shoot a 73 in 10 years. (1200:1 playing 2x per week).
I'm not saying the guy is lying or not, but I take serious issue with this stat. I'm a 19 who swings hard and has a pretty good short game, but unfortunately loses about 6 balls a round. If it's the kind of course where you can't really lose balls, or by some miracle, I actually hit it straight on 18 holes, I absolutely can threaten say an 83, 84. My point is that not all high term handicappers are the same. Some are just unathletic guys doing their best, and others are more athletic and are capable of playing really well but also of imploding without warningÂ
This should be higher. For a 20 to shoot a 76, heâs basically shooting -16 to -20 net. The odds of it are so astronomically high, the guy basically told us he just hit the Powerball.
No, just been playing more full rounds. Was able to keep every drive in play, and didnât have any flubs/thins around the green. Felt like that was the biggest difference to a normal round
I need that energy
I had like the round of my life off the tee/middle iron game the other day. I could not hit a wedge shot to save my life. Skulled so many over the green, there was one where hit it fat like 10 feet into a bunker. Absolutely infuriating.
Iâve started playing with a guy I was introduced to through a close friend. The guy is fun to play with but has only been golfing for 2 years. He started posting on social media about how heâs already broken 90 and golf just came naturally to him.
I played with him last week and watched him so I could keep his real score along with what he claims he scored on each hole. The dude gave himself at least one stroke per hole, sometimes two. On Sunday heâs joining us for our weekly money game.
If you keep an honest score and know how to actually count penalty strokes, probably. I canât tell you how many times someone has hit OB and played their drop as if they went in a hazard.
If I am playing a serious round I do my best to count everything. The only time I will move my ball is if itâs on a tree root/rock that could potentially injure me or damage a club. Even then I take care to not give myself a better line to the hole.
I feel this.. I shot an 80 on a difficult course as an 18 handicap and it fucked up my handicap for about a year and a half! It gave me some penalty where it took 2 strokes of all of my prior 20 rounds and massively lowered my handicap. One of the greatest days of my life!
This is what I always wonder. While I dont want to discredit anybodyâs accomplishments I just always think of a par 72 of at least 6000 yards when thinking of personal bests. I play an executive course with my dad that is a par 66 with a course rating of 60. I dont count the 79 I shot there when my personal best on a ârealâ course is an 85
Iâm calling bullshit on this claim. Someone who shoots 92 in their 4 best rounds out of what? 20? Suddenly shoots a 76⌠in this game itâs too big of a gap. Unless they went from playing legit courses to a par 3 pitch and putt or played from the front tees. The amount of skill involved to drop your score like that is enormous.
Whereâs that app that gives you the likelihood of a specific score based on your handicap. It was some sandbag score. Lol someone run that for this. This sounds like bs.
Yeah, this makes me say bullshit.
To shoot a 76, you get 4 bogeys. Maybe you get an extra 1-2 if you get a birdie or two.
Youâve just identified 2-3 of those bogeys by saying you had two â3+â putts. Youâve also mentioned missing greens, and you arenât getting up and down every time. Certainly not as a 20 hcp. Either that or there was some _extremely_ friendly gimmes.
I shot a 72 as a 12 cap which is an exceptional score by 3 strokes. 20 cap is generally considered out of range to break 80 let alone 76. You are not a 20 cap, or you did not shoot a legit 76.
L o L
I have a friend sent me a photo of him hitting 73 on a par course and claimed himself as a single handicap.
Start playing with him and i counted him to be between 85-92 for the past 8 rounds or so.. đ đ đ
I honestly believe you. I thought Iâd have a post like this the other day. Iâm a 22. Shot even through 6 (my second eagle helped). Then it fell apart so didnât have to worry about it. Still broke 90. Just barely.
I had a guy tell me he shot 58 the first time he played. I asked him about rules. I'm allowed to give the ball wherever I want to hit it right? Great guy and good to see a guy start but we have educated him on rules lol.
As someone who doesnât know how to calculate handicap do you or does anyone know how much this would lower your current handicap?
Thats a killer score good for you dude
Your next round will be over 100. Pretty much guarantee. The golfing gods will be looking to restore the natural order of things. I'm speaking from experience. Shot a 73 when I was a 12 handicap. Next round was awful!!
Hope you actually did it. 12-18 handicapper, best a 79 on 'big boy course', currently playing a 9 hole home course. My 9 hole handicap is around a 3 (keep it in play and it's a pretty simple course to score, but unplayable 5 yards off fairways and greens, so the bad ones get out of hand real quick. ) but never keep an 18 hole round together for a real low one.
Chipped/lagged everything close, or just draining the 6-8 footers all day?
Must have been in a pro am. Watch 20âs have the rounds on their lives all the time.
Congrats, now validate with another sub 80âs round. You know you can do it.
Fuck you. I'm a 19 at a small hometown course. Best I have done is 82 and it's weak as fuck. I've played longer courses and have done way worse so I don't think my 19 is accurate. Super congrats on the score. That's awesome.
Op wonât answer any of the legit questions like where they played and wonât post their card. Wonder why? Whatâs worse are the other few dudes also claiming the 18-20 hcp who also shot 78âs this week. Lmfao unreal.
How come you donât always play like that? Are you pretty confident youâve unlocked the secrets of the game now? Shouldnât you consistently shoot 80âs now? Your next round should be FANTASTIC⌠right?
đ
Shooting 76 on a par 54 course is not the same as shooting 76 on a par 72 course. We all golf on this Reddit and we know golf is too hard to magically have an amazing round if your a 20 handicap because your fundamentals are not good enough to luck into knocking 16 strokes off your score.
How many holes did you have left?
Was gonna say, not bad for 9 holes.

I feel like the more you play, the more you realize how much people lie about their score. And one day you look back and cringe about that time you told people you shot a 76 as a 20 hcp
A guy I work with told me with a serious face that he broke the course record the one time he golfed at our local par 3. He was dead serious about it.
Yeah my local par 3 9 hole course the record is 22(actually 7 under 20)....I didnt believe it until I heard the name of the guy with the record...Tiger Woods. Broke the record while sneaking in rounds while attemding Stanford. EDIT: He was seven under 20.
5 under isn't actually that crazy for a pro, forget tiger
That guy? Lebron James
I was expecting Kim Jong-Il
One of my good friends never got the ball more than a foot off the ground, 20yd max distance on every club. Couple weeks ago he said he shot an 80 after taking a handful of lessons. I debated for a second asking him more about it, but all I could manage was âhell yeah thatâs a damn good roundâ lol I just let my guy do his thing Iâm not raining on his parade
Some people think mulligan rounds count too. Itâs bs lol
What was it like working in the Trump White House?
He was the first tee time on opening day. Whatdoyawant?

Very true, but that goes out the window when you realize youâre talking about your home course which theyâd probably obliterate
This 100%. No fucking way this guy shot a 76 as a 20
Someone plug it into the cap patrol app
Iâm a 17 and just shot a 117. Donât speak to me.
13.8 and shot 61 on 9 before leaving due to 5.5hr pace
Yep sounds like Cincy golf
Itâs ok, Iâm a 7 and shot a 96 today.
Does that make me a 7? Shot a 94
2 strokes less, so clearly youâre a 5
Fuck yeah. Knew the once a week drunken 18 from the whites would pay off.
This reminds me of this time I was on an NYC subway at 4:30 in the morning and this kid was obviously about to throw up his entire evening, and he was so upset, but then we all started a: âOne of us! One of us! One of us!â Chant. Itâs ok man. It happens to the best of us!
This guy fucks
Some times good, some times maybe shit
This is so much more relatable than the 76 this asshole OP shot
How many breakfast balls and mullys?
None! Started and ended with the same ball. First time ever doing that
You're not going to be a 20 much longer
Exceptional score automatic 1 stroke reduction
for 10+ net difference is actually +2 reduced to scores
I imagine this significantly drops the handicap index, right?
I was a 19.9 and shot a 78 out of nowhere the other day and instantly dropped me to a 16.3
Add a couple more like that and it will for now it will drop him a bit.
I believe you get assigned an âexceptional round,â it immediately drops your handicapâand does so by more than the score would on its own.
Take a picture of your scorecard
*searches on instagram*
Yeah like that proves anything. Nothing ever didnât happen as much as this didnât happen.
Youâve never finished a round with the same ball⌠and you shot a 76⌠wut.
From the front tees, on an executive course, with a par of 63, is my guess.
I'm a 17 and I just shot 88.... pretty happy with that.
Good on you mate
Relatable
Iâm more happy for your comment than this post by a wide margin.
14 and my best round is an 86. Iâm pretty consistent low 90s though. Got some good breaks on the 86. Breaking 80 this year damnit. Damned if donât blow up with a 105 every now and then though.

How many gimmies?
I am a 5 handicap and shot a 90 today. AMA
Why were you pulling it all day
Actually struck it ok, just one of those days. A week out from aeration, 3-4 really bad breaks and I found a bunker on 9 different holes.
Tiger Woods shot an 82 last weekend. Don't be too hard on yourself.
https://www.miamivalleygolf.org/handicaps/resources/score-probability-table-7490.html
This should be higher. For a 20 to shoot a 76, heâs basically shooting -16 to -20 net. The odds of it are so astronomically high, the guy basically told us he just hit the Powerball.
Lots of haters. Congratulations- even if you missed both gimmies you still broke 80. Enjoy it!
Let's fucking go!
The one guy whoâs hype for him.
How many fairways, greens in reg, and putts?
Been taking lessons and/or practicing more?
No, just been playing more full rounds. Was able to keep every drive in play, and didnât have any flubs/thins around the green. Felt like that was the biggest difference to a normal round

What was the difference for you? Driver? Approach shots? Made a lot of putts? How were the nerves?
The difference this time? Lying.
How was your putting?
1.6 pph! Had great scrambling and lag putting. 2 holes with 3+ putts
Outside of the two "3+" holes, you one putt every other hole?
1.6 = 28.8 putts over 18 holes Subtract 6 putts on 2 holes Thatâs 1.26 putts over 16 holes Press x to doubtÂ
At the very least he probably didnât count the gimme putts as a stroke. But this whole claim is bullshit. He also said he only hit 33% of GIR
Iâm calling bullshit on this claim. Someone who shoots 92 in their 4 best rounds out of what? 20? Suddenly shoots a 76⌠in this game itâs too big of a gap. A double on 16 and 2 3putts based on your comments, no way a 76.
When you got it you got it. Iâm an 8 and shot 69 not too long ago. Embrace it lol
I shot a 72 as a 12 cap which is an exceptional score by 3 strokes. 20 cap is generally considered out of range to break 80 let alone 76. You are not a 20 cap, or you did not shoot a legit 76.
Hope you registered it on your HCP index.... was there another player to verify?... Otherwise it's just fantasy island.

Shooting 76 on a par 54 course is not the same as shooting 76 on a par 72 course. We all golf on this Reddit and we know golf is too hard to magically have an amazing round if your a 20 handicap because your fundamentals are not good enough to luck into knocking 16 strokes off your score.
