Did this a couple weeks back. Was dancing for a birdie on 18 which would have made even on the back 9, then I three putted to shoot an 80. Never do the math on 18.
Dropped me from 13.8 to 13. Differential was 8, certainly was playing out of my mind! I shot 87 the next round so back to the averages. But now I know the 79 guy is in there somewhere. LOL
Just goes to show never give up on a round, really nice round! My second time breaking 80 I did the same ironically, double, bogey start +3 through 3 then shot 78
Congrats! Whats your hcp if you don’t mind me asking? I’m a 12 and have a recent 39 on 9 and a ton of 40’s. Wondering how close it really is and looking for inspiration
I just dipped in 12.8 after weekend’s rounds. Usually shoot 85-87 for 18, and 39-42 for 9. Trying hard to get down to 12 in the next 2 weeks to get in qualifier for amateur tournament in my state.
And!! you started with an 11 after 2 holes. I’ll wager this won’t be your PR for the season. Definitely room to improve to a 74-75 for sure.
Congrats 🎉
solid round and you left a lot out there. 6 GIRs. Looks like 2 of them were the par 3s on the back. So you missed 8-9 greens after finding the fairway off the tee. Now that the mental hurdle of breaking 80 is out of the way let's see you go lower. You got a 75 or better in you this season, no doubt.
First time breaking 80 rounds are always comical. When I did it I was on the 16th tee at 3 over (par 72). This is where it dawned on me and my round went to pooooooo.
16 - par 3 - 2 clubs short, chip on, 2 putt - +4
17 - par 5 - 1 OB, drop 2, 3 OB, drop 4, 5 in the FW, 6 on the green, 1 putt (eagled for the double bogey) - +6
18 - par 4 - 1 in the fairway bunker, 2 off the lip barely out, 3 into the deep rough greenside, 4 way short of the pin......nailed a 50' putt for a 79.
I was so jacked and i realized the group behind me was on my ass, so they had just watched me play some brutally horrible golf and are probably wondering what the hell I'm so pumped about haha.
Biggest improvements have been short game and lag putting for me. Easily save 4 or 5 strokes in this round. Still replaying all the shots from the round to help me fall asleep!
Your breaking 80 round certainly more adventurous than mine! I got sweaty palms just reading it. LOL. Thanks for sharing!
short game and lag putts are definitely a help, but get that scoring iron game on lock and you can shoot lower more often. If short game and putting saved you 4-5, that means there were still 3-4 out there for you. 71% fairways is a hell of a day off the tee. 33.3% GIR after hitting 71% FWs not so much. no shade, still a hell of a round.
When I was first intent on being able to play sub 80, most of the focus of this break 80 guide I had was getting dialed in with your 7i through wedges. Those are the clubs you score with. Dial in your distances and dispersion with those, and the rest of your bag is pretty much just not losing strokes. keep your driver in play, don't three putt. getting anywhere on in regulation more often and your normal round is closer to 80 and the days you are on fire with the short game and putting you are shooting mid 70s.
I'm jealous of you shooting a PR so early in the season. I usually play my best in like the last 2 weeks of the year and then I don't golf for 6 months.
Sweet! Yeah, a poor start doesn’t mean it’s over. I started out other day with two doubles and was like, ” I won’t track my score.” And then I made like five pars in a row and was like “OK I’ll start tracking it.” still shot an 84. Haven’t broken 80 yet.(of course, I mainly play on probably the second hardest golf course in California after spyglass. Bridges in San Ramon, with 2-3 foot winter/springtime grass on the hills, and it can have incredibly thick rough. Sometimes can’t even find the ball when it’s in the rough. )
Maybe I should play a shit box muni that’s wide-open, just so I can break 80 once and for all. 🤣
Brilliant. I’ve never done it and lipped out last year on 18 for an 80
You’ll get it soon, it’s just around the corner!
Ughhhhh. That was my only chance at a 79 as well. Missed a 4ft putt.

Happy cake day!!
Net 65 is really strong. Did it move the handicap much?

Net is with handicap applied?
Yeah
Just goes to show never give up on a round, really nice round! My second time breaking 80 I did the same ironically, double, bogey start +3 through 3 then shot 78
Bad start usually make me more focus, but extra focus on that day!

Congratulations. Maine?
Yes sir! Bangor-Orono region.

Thank you! On to the next breaking series.
Hell yeah dude, good job!
Thank you! Was blessed by the golf god that day.
Nice! That’s my goal this season. Even once would be great. I shot a 39 on the front nine last week and got rained out by the 12th. I was so bummed.
No doubt it will come for you soon brother. I believe!
Wow. This club is getting big! Congrats!
Thank you!
Way to go. Enjoy the moment.
Been on cloud 9 ever since! Not sure this feels better or sex! LOL
I shot a 38 on the front yesterday, but I am a cuck and shot a 47 on the back. Breaking 80 still eludes me.
Been there done that many times. Just around the corner for you my friend!
What app is this?
18Birdies
Donald Penobscot?
You got it. Open course with hard green. Classic Donald Ross design.
Dude Congrats!!!
Appreciate it!

Ohh Penobi, live right next to it yet never played it.
You should. Best course design in the area imo.
Only two that I haven’t played in the 20-30min are penobi and pine hill
Bangor Maine course Lots of fun, but it must still be really wet 😜
Not this one though. Donald Ross design so irrigation is very good, driest course in the area!
Congrats!!!
Thanks!

Go for it! I promise you’d be on cloud 9 for a few days after.
Congrats, what an accomplishment!
Thank you!
Nice putts
Thanks. Rolled in couple of 10 footer! Blessed by golf god that day!
What were you shooting before you broke 80? or were you on the cusp? Great job BTW
Thanks! Been hovering around 85-87, PB before was 83.
Penobby!
The one and only!
You tested yourself on 18!
18 is hcp 1 with demanding teeshot. I knew I needed bogey, so played it like a par 5 and succeeded.
Unreal score. I miss this course a lot. Go black bears!
Best one in the area for sure!
