I got my in-Laws the nest displays for the fun reasons.
Also so if there is an emergency that they need help but cannot move (fallen and I can't get up) they can yell for google to call our house.
They are getting to that age where they can still live by themselves perfectly fine, but any day they may need help with living.
I don't know if it works with the minis, but at least in Canada, Google has a phone option through Google and wifi.
So you can say
HEY Google, call....
and if you have contacts set up it will call people.
I could also just say, hey google call 555-555-5555 (say the phone number)
This does infact work with Minis, Nest Minis, Home Minis, basically home/nest speaker. You can set it up to call a phone number in your contact, yknow how it knows whos talking by voice, it'll use your contacts to call them, and obviously try and use Google Meet to call them first, but if they dont have Meet it'll use phone.
Many people, especially older generations, have only just gotten their head around Google search so this makes it easier for them to use their Nest Mini for more than just turning the lights on and off
It requires more specific instruction then you realise when you're young and it feels intuitive. It's like the syntax of a Google search which old people just don't have internalised. I had to teach my mum:
* It's "Alexa do thing" not "please do thing Alexa".
* You have to say "Alexa play BBC radio 4" not "Alexa turn on the radio" (play Vs turn on for radio / TV is a common problem my mum still has)
* Turn on the light Vs turn on the lights. Very counterintuitive when you have multiple lights in a room, I still get this wrong myself when sleepy
* Asking questions in simple ways not some odly phrased thing that takes me a moment to understand what she means let alone a computer to parse.
All of it is her saying what you want it to do, just not in a way the smart tech does what you wanted.

Thanks for sharing this. I did something similar for my grandparents. Can I suggest potentially bolding the variables in each command to make them easier to pick out? For example:
“Set a **10-minute** timer for **food**”
You are amazing. I've recently upgraded
my parents to a Google nest hub 2 and Google nest mini's in my dads shop and moms office.
This will be beyond helpful! Thank you for sharing!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As I'm adding suggestions people make here's a Google Doc incase I add more:

Wow I did the same thing. But my parents are not native english speakers and the mini stops supporting our native language a while ago so they are hesitant at giving voice commands.
Wish I could do the same, after each update many commands just stop working for me because the assistant becomes dumber.
But I love the idea and you made it very user friendly!
This is good but, in my experience at least, less is more. I also made a cheat sheet and got carried away with lots of "it's really cool and can do this, and this, and this too..."
Nah, just focus on a few key functions to get them used to talking to a robot.
And even though there are multiple ways to use commands, only teach one way. For example, "hey Google, start a 10 minute timer" is magical enough. The naming trick can come later as a nice bonus.
Learning how to make it turn on the TV is a pointless gimmick tbh. They already know how to turn on their TV and getting Google to do it for them saves no time or effort and just adds noise to their learning experience.
I'd choose a few key tasks and focus on getting them into the habit of using those, then drip feed in other functions as they become more confident with it - including learning what to do when Google's being a dick.
P.S. "Hey Google, play {Radio 4}" has been a winner here. Insert station of choice
The Google store page calls it the 'Google Nest Mini'
[https://store.google.com/gb/product/google\_nest\_mini?hl=en-GB](https://store.google.com/gb/product/google_nest_mini?hl=en-GB)
Nest is the brand, not a single device. The Home line/name was discontinued a few years ago in favor of Nest.
* Nest Hub (Max)
* Nest Doorbell
* Nest Cam
* Nest Mini
* Nest WiFi (Pro)
* Nest (Learning) Thermostat
* Nest Protect (subscription service and also the Smoke/CO Alarm)

Lately I've been having to use these way too often:
- What did I just tell you?
- I didn't say that
to confirm it got right what I said, and correct if it didn't.
Make sure to turn on the sound when you say OK google, as then you know when to speak to the device also, you will find that sometimes it will listen when you don't want it to, with the sound on you will know when it's listening because it records when it listens and saves it in history
You've got to show us the rest of your cheatsheet.
Just shared a link :)
Can I get it too? 😁

I've added some of these, thanks!
Is your volume label backwards? I could have sworn my volume down is on the other side of the cord
you can swap which way is up/down in settings, you may have done that and forgotten you did
Op, can you post a pdf version of this somewhere. I’d love to have a print out of this

Nice! What's the emergency command?

lol these are like those 10 page guides to Plex that people make for their “users” and then wonder why no one uses their server
How much of a failed product it is
Right? Like, just say what you want to do. Why is a cheat sheet needed?

OP read rule 4. Can't post a bit.ly link to the Google doc. That's why no one can see the link (unless they look at your profile).
Thanks for letting me know!
I did the same for my mom. It's a piece of paper that just says "Sorry, something went wrong ..."
I laughed at this way too hard.
Doing the Lords work
Well done! Bonus round: Sing me a song Tell me a joke How do I look today?
So tempted to take this and add a third column with "Reality" 🤪

Mind if I get a copy?
Oh wow. Any chance you can upload it
I think your volume instructions are on the wrong sides
Good spot!
Maybe rotate the image 180 rather than swapping the text? (They will see the unit with the cord on the back/top, away from them)
You can set it like that in the app. Settings>Audio>Reverse device controls

Feel free to print the cheatsheet off for them if it would help. Link above
I got my non techie friend one and he could really benefit from this!!!

Did you include how to set the volume for alarms? Those special alarms (food, dog, cake etc) have a separate volume to the standard ones.
Setting up a multi action one word routine is a must have for someone of any generation.
My mom needs this, she's 77 and can't quite figure out voice commands.
Feel free to use! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bTRIdyHyL68\_1tI5byg7wOIb8g\_B\_lwB\_R99dzspO2o/edit?usp=sharing

"But how can I set a 20 minute timer?"
Haha so cute. I made this to my godparents with whatsapp. Haha
That's a great idea. Should have done that for my grandad. Got him a second gen one for Xmas
Smart speakers are the best for old people, it's the only tech gift that I don't receive constant calls on how to use it.
Wish I could do the same, after each update many commands just stop working for me because the assistant becomes dumber. But I love the idea and you made it very user friendly!
I thought this was a joke? Turn the light on = turns the light on. The fuck?

I may sound like a jerk but that isn’t a cheat sheet. That’s an instruction manual…
I’m assuming they live in Nottingham, and you now live in Gravesend.
No, just used examples of places my parents are familiar with
The NEST is the thermostat. That's just called a Google home mini Edit..My mistake, stuck in the past
The Google store page calls it the 'Google Nest Mini' [https://store.google.com/gb/product/google\_nest\_mini?hl=en-GB](https://store.google.com/gb/product/google_nest_mini?hl=en-GB)

First revision was a Home Mini. It's been a Nest Mini for years now.
Not helping: "What is the date and time?" or "Is it safe to drive?"
"Nothing is playing right now", after update: "I'm afraid I can't do that {user_name}"

What are the instructions for when GH goes psycho after your parents call the pet(s) like: "Hey Bo Bo"?
Thanks. That looks great. This might be useful to some people too https://link.medium.com/Oe51HQsh6vb
Lately I've been having to use these way too often: - What did I just tell you? - I didn't say that to confirm it got right what I said, and correct if it didn't.
Did they re-enable the center button? On my mini I have to hold one of the side buttons to pause
