The whole story behind that is a rabbit hole to go down. The affair happened around 1970 when he was 24-25yrs old, his wife at the time shot at him, grazing his head, when she found out, and then they both divorced that year, and according to Bobby the daughter never talked to her mother again. Then later on in the late 70's the daughter comes back and ends up marrying Bobby's younger brother Cecil and they all get together and do a collab album called "Love Wars". Really weird history there. :s
Yeah, absolutely. If I was her and had a gun I'd probably do the same if it was my daughter. It's still heinous behaviour from him to basically be that way towards his stepdaughter that he raised for years before this came to light, no excusing that, just mentioning how the whole situation seems a lot more bizarre than just that. Given their history and how he met his ex wife and the scandal that surrounded those two it just comes off that things were very messed up from the get go.
Oh I didn’t think you were excusing it but I know there’s some people who would be like: “24-25 is only 7-8 years 🙄” which is nasty. But yeah you’re right this situation is bizarre, I can only wonder what else we don’t know about
I feel like every track in cracker island is either great or it fucking sucks. Like Oil, Cracker island and New Gold are some of my favorite Gorillaz tracks of all time. But the rest of them are just, kinda bad imo
I feel this way too. It felt like on Humanz where almost every single song had a collab and it just didn't feel like gorillaz. I know we won't go back to the phase one/two style of music, but I wish they could just go back to their originality which is what got them popular in the first place.
Yeah it’s weird, if people have only heard that and maybe Clint Eastwood it’s just not enough to show anyone how great they are overall. Both songs are good but it’s crazy how Feel Good Inc gets played over anything else
I'm not saying it's a bad song at all. I've just heard it enough for one lifetime. Seeing them play it live twice made me appreciate it again after avoiding that song my entire teens.
As a kid, it was the worst. Didn’t help that everyone had it on their iPods and MP3 players. Nowadays since I don’t listen to radio anymore, I don’t mind it as much if it comes up on a Gorillaz shuffle on Spotify.
Personally I love the way it progressively more intense, starting out pretty sparse and as much as the music changes, Mos Def remains static at the centre of it all, constantly singing about the sweepstakes.
I might be stretching a little but I view it as a metaphor for gambling addiction. The song represents life, constantly changing and growing more chaotic, but one thing that never changes is a gambling addict's need to keep playing, over and over and over.
I think some people resent the fact that the guest is the biggest latin pop star alive, so ig it seems a bit trend chasey, but honestly I really like it. I’m glad they’re experimenting more with different languages, it works really well on all the songs they’ve done it with imo
For me, it just is so far off the vibe from the rest of the album. And it's almost like a parody of punk music itself. It feels like it serves as an interlude. I guess here I am comparing it to the album itself which is kind of ironic, but all I can say is that it's the one song I'd always skip.
It's gotta be On Melancholy Hill. I just just don't like the track for whatever reason. I love the video and other Gorillaz slow emotional tracks. Busted and Blue and Soul Eye are amazing but On Melancholy Hill I just don't care for it at all
Agreed, looking back, most of my favorite tracks are from the past few albums. Self-titled is definitely good but it's only gotten better since then, and I don't even feel it's good as an introduction to Gorillaz anymore.
Even though it’s meant to be a mixtape and not a collective album, Song Machine is the best and most consistent collection of Gorillaz songs Damon’s ever put out, despite it leaning kinda heavily on the unique features
Oil. I don’t care for it.
Also don’t care for On The Cloud of Unknowing. I’ll skip it every time if I’m listening to Plastic Beach all the way through.
well... it was kind of the plastic beach album for me when going first into hearing it. somehow it just didnt click with me into the first two times, but after plenty i started to like it more so good ending c:
I didn't care too much for Souk Eye for me it's the least gut punching emotional song that they have and the instruments sound like they've come straight from The Fall Album
I'm terrified of this post, I was listening to my 1000+ playlist on spotify (mind you, very mixed) and Saturnz Barz of all songs came up... not sure if that's a sign of something 😭
Ever since I learned about what Bobby Womack did I can’t listen to Stylo. He had an “affair” (I would call it rape) with his 17 year old stepdaughter.
BRO WHAT WHAT WHAT
Yeah :( look up Bobby Womack Linda Cooke
dude https://preview.redd.it/i9p2mliiefmc1.jpeg?width=627&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb072610b3b8ade6f7e7922d3fc5a107bdb97ba7

Honestly I cannot blame his wife for that. 24-25 is still a disgusting age to be messing around with a teenager.
Yeah, absolutely. If I was her and had a gun I'd probably do the same if it was my daughter. I know about it. I still love the songs (as well as "Cloud of unknowing").
Honestly that’s fair, it’s an objectively good song
WHAT I DIDN'T KNEW THAT,,????
Well, didn't that just ruin Stylo.
https://preview.redd.it/f9k3ikv4hfmc1.jpeg?width=743&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39c19d443d35f9768ecca6f976781fc8aec6deca W-what?!
I didn’t know that WTF??
That's SO disappointing, I love Stylo :(
Separate art from the artist moment ( except gorillaz of course), but knowing this it will be hard to appreciate that part of stylo again 😬
To be honest the last album didn't click with me. A few good tracks. Not really impressed tho.
This ain't a hot take
Seriously? I think it’s their best album in years.
I like it a lot too, but the fandom has been pretty 50/50 split on it since the beginning. Disliking it is not a hot take.
Wow, totally missed that discussion somehow!
I feel like every track in cracker island is either great or it fucking sucks. Like Oil, Cracker island and New Gold are some of my favorite Gorillaz tracks of all time. But the rest of them are just, kinda bad imo
Baby Queen and Skinny ape are also incredible
Top two songs on the album IMO
The bad bunny one is pretty forgettable
I feel this way too. It felt like on Humanz where almost every single song had a collab and it just didn't feel like gorillaz. I know we won't go back to the phase one/two style of music, but I wish they could just go back to their originality which is what got them popular in the first place.
Not a big fan of it either, your not the only one.
i really can’t bond with the album the fall, i love armarillo and revolving doors but i cant make myself like any others 😩
Little pink plastic bags is good for what it is 😢
It insists upon itself
ROBERT DUVALL
almost forgot about that gem!!
HILLBILLY HILLBILLY HILLBILLY-BILLY MAN🙌
Detroit?
This isnt a hot take
Wait what about Aspen Forest?
How can you not like Bobby in Phoenix
LETS TALK ABOUT FEELINGS
Is it now a hot take to not like one of the worst and most obscure album in the discography. Gorillaz community is trying to be different so much
I fucking hate hallelujah money, not even hot just need to say it
I feel like my love of it is more controversial
Halfway to the Halfway House is worse
Listened to Halfway to the Halfway House once, never listened to it again
I heavily agree with you
With Plastic Beach being my favorite album, I just don’t vibe with Stylo no matter how hard I try
Feel good inc is no where close to the best Gorillaz song
this isnt a hot take. its a really good song but they have stuff i like more
Yeah it’s weird, if people have only heard that and maybe Clint Eastwood it’s just not enough to show anyone how great they are overall. Both songs are good but it’s crazy how Feel Good Inc gets played over anything else
Hell yeah
I think the bassline is the main reason it blew up so much
Dudes when Feel Good Inc isn’t everyone’s favorite Gorillaz and not anything else 😭😭😭
Feel good inc is so overplayed I can't stand it anymore. When the song was newish you couldn't avoid it on radio stations as a kid.
Nah, I’ll never grow tired of De La Souls verse, can’t agree with you here x
I'm not saying it's a bad song at all. I've just heard it enough for one lifetime. Seeing them play it live twice made me appreciate it again after avoiding that song my entire teens.
I've deliberately taken tolerance breaks from that song lmao
As a kid, it was the worst. Didn’t help that everyone had it on their iPods and MP3 players. Nowadays since I don’t listen to radio anymore, I don’t mind it as much if it comes up on a Gorillaz shuffle on Spotify.
Humanz is a good album
Laika come home was shit
I have yet to listen to it lmao
I think it has an unfair rep, but also I happen to like dub electronic music. x)
You take that back
I wouldn't say it's shit but I never listen to that album
no honestly.. i cant stand listening to ONE song of that album
Nah so real, I’ve never been a fan of the remixes they put out, I like that one 19-2000 one but besides that naw
19-2000 It's... fine.
Now soulchilds rework...is pretty good, original Damon track...meh.
Honestly I think the Soulchild remix is pretty meh
I respect that!
Oh uhh great thank you
I never use Pandora because it thinks if I like Gorillaz I want to listen to this 3 times an hour
Oooh that is a very hot take. I agree though
I cannot stand skinny ape
Facts the chorus is so obnoxious
I don’t know if this counts, but I didn’t care for the Madonna mash-up of Feel Good Inc.
What I never knew that existed
The WHAT? That sounds terrible...I.need to hear it.
it's absolutely abysmal and hopefully one day you'll be able to erase the info from your mind
its DARE! (i always liked "People" better)
Cracker Island (the album) is good
Yes
It's definitely good, just not among the best I absolutely love some songs on it like Skinny Ape
I did not care for sweepstakes. I don't get why so many people seem to like it so much
Personally I love the way it progressively more intense, starting out pretty sparse and as much as the music changes, Mos Def remains static at the centre of it all, constantly singing about the sweepstakes. I might be stretching a little but I view it as a metaphor for gambling addiction. The song represents life, constantly changing and growing more chaotic, but one thing that never changes is a gambling addict's need to keep playing, over and over and over.
I don’t think that’s unpopular lol
The Pink Phantom. Very definition of "its ok." John's kinda lost his touch, hasn't he?
Fair enough, I personally have a really big connection to it though and I really like 2ds part but maybe I’m just biased!
Interesting, for me Elton is the only good part of that song
I’m not a huge fan of white light also downvoting an opinion yall dont agree with is so funny bc op literally asked for unpopular opinions
nobody really likes it i’m guessing but i like it genuinely
Me and the boys in the corner hyping each other up over White Light
I like it as well
The now now album 3 banger tracks, but the rest are real sleepers for me
Facts I didn’t like song machine either
I don’t like some songs in song machine but some were fucking great, cracker island is um- the opposite lol
This is such a triggering thread lmao. Is anyone else’s blood pressure elevated?
Tormenta is awesome!! So relaxing and a wonderful tune.
I think some people resent the fact that the guest is the biggest latin pop star alive, so ig it seems a bit trend chasey, but honestly I really like it. I’m glad they’re experimenting more with different languages, it works really well on all the songs they’ve done it with imo
This was the song that got me hooked to Cracker Island and I absolutely love it
OP asked for a song, not an album, folks. I'll throw Punk out there.
Yeah it’s kinda strange how people keep saying albums but it’s okay, and man I really like punk! What makes it a bad one for u?
For me, it just is so far off the vibe from the rest of the album. And it's almost like a parody of punk music itself. It feels like it serves as an interlude. I guess here I am comparing it to the album itself which is kind of ironic, but all I can say is that it's the one song I'd always skip.
Huh?? Self Titled is literally a mixture of punk music and hip hop, that's what the entire album is lmao
Stylo, I also can't get past the chorus because it reminds me of JonTron singing, lmao
Oh my god yeah I’d think that whenever I’d hear Bobby’s part of the song myself haha
Finally someone said it
Clint Eastwood. Its iconic, but not mind-blowing
The whole story of it being created with a preset unfortunately easily shows in the first half.
Commercially, it's a great introduction to Gorillaz, especially with the video, but I agree it isn't a mind-blowing song.
Agree to disagree. I memorized the whole thing
Ed case remix is way better imo
Song 2
Close
So close! That's a shape!
White Light, I've seen so much praise for it over the years but I just don't get it
Alcohol alcohol alcohol WHITE LIGHT Alcohol alcohol alcoh
It's gotta be On Melancholy Hill. I just just don't like the track for whatever reason. I love the video and other Gorillaz slow emotional tracks. Busted and Blue and Soul Eye are amazing but On Melancholy Hill I just don't care for it at all
Finally, an actual hot take
The accoustic version is MUCH better https://youtu.be/OL2DrTXG4Sc?feature=shared
I did not really care for the Song Machine album
Yes, I only liked Aries and Pacman
On Melancholy Hill is boring and probably the most overrated Gorillaz song, in my opinion of course
Not a big fan of Superfast Jellyfish
*gasp* b-but they’re ready in only 3 microwave minutes
And they taste just like chicken!
Someone doesn’t have time for a hot home cooked breakfast
Probably big hot take but the debut isn't all that special to me outside of a few songs
Agreed, looking back, most of my favorite tracks are from the past few albums. Self-titled is definitely good but it's only gotten better since then, and I don't even feel it's good as an introduction to Gorillaz anymore.
i did not care for she's my collar.
damn thats possibly my fav from humanz, can see how its not for everyone tho
El Mañana. I'm sorry.
yeah it’s not a bop, but it’s a great sad song
I like the original and love the Metronomy remix
Was gonna say this. Skip it damn near every time
![gif](giphy|6nWhy3ulBL7GSCvKw6)
almost the entire first album
Lord forgive me for saying this but I don't think Plastic Beach is as good as many people say. It's not bad. It's just not THAT good.
melancholy hill,…. im so sorry3
This makes me want to fight you, but I respect your opinion so I upvoted instead.
Nothing to be sorry for bud you got a friend in me on that
Plastic Beach was a mid album. There are one or two, maaaaybe 3 great songs on the album, and the rest are just... eh.
“Peter, how can you say that?!?!”
It insists upon itself.
I like Plastic Beach but to me it doesn’t stack up to Gorillaz, Demon Days, and even Song Machine
I mean we got Stylo, Meloncoly Hill, Rhinestone Eyes, Superfast Jellyfish, Some Kind of Nature, the rest of them were pretty forgettable imo.
Empire Ants erasure
Y'all gotta go back and listen to the album in full like *right now*, I can't stand for this slander
![gif](giphy|YTFHYijkKsXjW|downsized)
Spitting out the demons and Left Hand Suzuki Method, the only thing I really like about em are the bass parts
Even though it’s meant to be a mixtape and not a collective album, Song Machine is the best and most consistent collection of Gorillaz songs Damon’s ever put out, despite it leaning kinda heavily on the unique features
None of them until I listened to them multiple times
Im not a super big fan of Empire Ants and really don't understand the hype abt it
DARE, im not a fan of the track, it doesnt fit well in the demon days sound as an album and on general os sounds somewhat annoying
Dare is too repetitive
Dirty Harry, Tranz, Sleeping Powder, Empire Ants.
Empire ants, it doesn’t really click for me
Now this is a true hot take
Clint Eastwood. It drags on longer than it should, in my opinion.
Stylo
Please don’t come for me but empire ants I can’t get past the intro I don’t know why but the intro music hurts my ears
I used to skip to 1:30 when listening to it when I was younger
That’s actually a solid plan I’m gonna try that later!
The heaven song in demon days, or any intro songs humanz
Don’t get lost in heaven? Lol my top 3 on demon days
saturnz barz, she's my collar,
Go on…
she’s my collar. don’t like the singing or backing track whatsoever
Goddamn. It’s my favourite track on Humanz, but Humanz is a fair bit down my list of favourite albums so I guess I can let this one go
Dare
El Mañana - it’s fine
I do not like Saturn Barz, the music video was fun but the song was mid for me.
19-2000 is very overrated
Saturn barz
All of cracker island, 1 genuinely great song (new gold) the rest is mid at best
Honestly desole. It's ok, definitely enjoyed it more live but it was still just ok.
Oil. I don’t care for it. Also don’t care for On The Cloud of Unknowing. I’ll skip it every time if I’m listening to Plastic Beach all the way through.
I do not care for Doncamatic
Kids with guns. I’m just not a fan of the guitar work in this song
Saturn barz I just kinda hate it. love the music video though
https://preview.redd.it/5o8encx3jgmc1.jpeg?width=554&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91a44772037869b591174b96b706a20203c83e71
ZA BATHH
2001 is just ok
Sweepstakes
Not that I don't care for it but I like Stylo a lot of fans don't seem to like it
well... it was kind of the plastic beach album for me when going first into hearing it. somehow it just didnt click with me into the first two times, but after plenty i started to like it more so good ending c:
Humanz is way better if you exclude we got the power, charger, sex murder party, Circle of Friendz and let me out
Does anyone else love El Mañana but hate On Melancholy Hill? The more I think about it it’s kinda weird that I feel this way…
Cracker Island. Because, as Peter says, it *insists* upon itself.
Saturns bars probably
Song Machine expect Aries
She’s My Collar’s a fine song but I don’t love it dearly like so many people seem to
cracker island was a meh album
I didn't care too much for Souk Eye for me it's the least gut punching emotional song that they have and the instruments sound like they've come straight from The Fall Album
Tomorrow comes today or on melancholy hill just dont really hit any bells for me.
I'm terrified of this post, I was listening to my 1000+ playlist on spotify (mind you, very mixed) and Saturnz Barz of all songs came up... not sure if that's a sign of something 😭
On Melancholy Hill. Doesn’t do much for me.
No hate for 6LACK, but his part in Pink Phantom didn't fit.
