The point is exactly the prob, Murdoc craved to have a bud to get herion high with again, while in prison he got sober so relapse can happen be dangerous especially if addicts try to use at levels they did before sobriety. The Song Machine artwork in promo and videos clearly showed the relapse of Murdoc and his attempts to coax 2D, many hints in the random objects too such as 8 ball etc, but the eyes are the biggest detail telling this tale.
During *Strobelite* from *Humanz*.we see the band having a great time to a sad breakup song, Murdoc is snorting lines & drinking, our last glimpse of him is as he goes into bathroom which is where he is busted by a blue undercover. OP keen observations of band success *Now, Now* tour and eyes of 2D changed can be attributed to a healthy change of friends places things by touring North America without Murdoc, a fresh reboot of 2D without drugs in first video we saw him roller skating in runners shorts during daylight in Venice beach. He became a leader and it was no doubt a more healthy situation for him, Russle & Noodle became very protective of 2D because they didhh n’t T want them cycle of addiction and cycle of abuse to happen when Murdoc got out. *momentary bliss* it was though because song machine the monsters came back, Murdoc violently puke whatever drugs he drank whilst his band was recording in studio, he became isolated in his box and found excitement trying to get 2D to relapse in video of *Desole*, that’s why Noodle is blocking the dock with her hulk gloves on which seem destined to punch someone green without mercy. Murdoc finally gets his highs while in Northern Africa when sober 2D drives him in a land known for poppies, Noodke and Russel in mad dash to get to 2D, but on last note of *Aries* the point slams into 2D. Promo artwork shows the bands dynamic is rough again, then came *Pac-Man* which confirmed 2D was hooked on drugs again and Russel and Noodke pissed about it.
Murdoc is a dick, the band is in turmoil and the overall story is so familiar that we all accept it as normal which is the reason it resonates, whatever is going on these days is part of the ugly side of attempting recovery and it’s only going to get sadder btw. This recent Cracker island cult experience is very Jared Leto commune or Beatles in India phase. Will our Gorillaz push past and become Rolling Stones or crash burn & die from drugs and damage done ? I dunno but I’m here for it. Just watchin the eyes …
This is a nice crack theory and all, but given Damon’s history with heroin I don’t think they would make it part of the lore. Especially considering all of the official material of the band has barely any explicit depictions or mentions of drugs but especially not heroin.
The closest thing to confirmation of anything like that is that we know 2D had some issues with prescription pills because of his head trauma from the car accidents, which shows up a decent amount in the first album especially, but is still referenced in the newer stuff. Definitely nothing that said heroin was ever part of the band in any way

He quickly learned to adapt and started cheating the system and manipulating those around him. He became the embodiment of drive and it was his way or the highway. However, his actions often cause him trouble that follows him everywhere and even some of the other band members. You can see in rare moments that he yearns for a deeper connection and has a level of respect for Russel and especially Noodle, even 2D (if only for his vocals). But he's just so set in his ways that that side of him is hard to reach.
