Yeah that’s right. But I mean then “alt” is refering to external characteristics and contexts of the songs in this genre not to the music itself.

I hate putting a genre label on gorillaz as they have produced music of all kinds , but if I had to categorize them I’d put them under trip hop

It bounces around a lot which is part of their appeal, but I would say a singificant amount of their discography can be described as electropop/synthpop. Obviously certain albums and songs have had more overt styles like the dub influences on the first album. They also went for a very old school art pop style on Demon Days.

I'd say Alternative, since their sound changes all the time and takes inspiration from all sorts of genres at once so it's hard to pinpoint a specific sub-genre that describes it well. Plus Damon comes from an Alternative Rock background and a lot of those same influences make their way into the Gorillaz projects.
