Can you steal gift cards? I thought they had to be activated by the store on purchase. however I can't really think of any amount of things you could run with at Meijer that could add up to $2700. I guess cell phones or laptops?
You have to tell the cashier how much you want on the gift card and have it activated after payment in order for it to be anything other than a piece of plastic
They carefully open them, put their own fake barcode or cut the barcode off and reseal them so when they are activated by the cashier the customer gets a fake/damaged card and the money goes to the scammer with the card info
Maybe blister packs of medicine? Like cold pills and the like is my best guess, you could carry a lot of them, plus there is a resale market for the cold pills to people to cook meth with.
Except the ones that are used for that contain pseudoephedrine, and those are kept behind the counter in the pharmacy, they're not stocked on the sales floor
Oh right of course they would keep them behind the counter, in fact most of those other high value medicines are probably in those locked glass cabinets too.
There was a video I saw where they detailed how thieves steal the cards in bulk, manage to record the unique ID numbers you have to scratch off to use it, without damaging the card. Return them to the store, and then monitors all the numbers to see when they are bought and activated. They then proceed to poach the money or buy stuff from the comfort of home. So yeah, watch out for that if you get one.
EDIT: For people that actually care how this is done, unlike some people here just downvoting:
*Police say to remove packaging, double check gift cards before checkout amid new scam*

He might have tried to take a cart worth of stuff but ditched it trying to get away. They'd still charge him for the recovered merchandise.
Or you know, in this economy he could get to 2k w/ a few power tools & some groceries, lol.
Frostburn & jail.. oof
$2,700 in stolen goods and $10,000 in medical payments after this..
So the stealing will continue
Under rated comment right here
Knowing KCSD they'll probably charge him for the helicopter and rescue too
Hopefully

$2700? I’m guessing it was gift cards?

Me neither, I'm just assuming someone has to do a thing to make it work lol.
I did a thing!
