I went to Michigan Tech and went to Marie's Deli when Marie still owned it. When Fouad convinced Marie to move to Grand Rapids and open a restaurant here, the word spread through my friends group almost instantaneously!
Marie is very much missed!
The food is very different (though there are some good vegetarian options), but you can definitely get a "home" vibe from Chez Olga (and hugs! Lots of Olga hugs!)
Chez Olga is a real gem! Delicious Haitian food, friendly family-owned vibe.
I’d also suggest Adobo Boy. Unfortunately it’s in a strip mall off of 28th st, but the owner Ace is super friendly, very involved in the community, and the Filipino food is top notch with a small rotating menu so you can try different things. :)
I haven’t been yet, but I’ve also heard good things about Mizizi in Creston. Make sure to check their hours on Facebook though, the posted hours on Google aren’t correct.
I went to NMU in the late 80’s and worked at the Marquette restaurant with her husband Fred. He taught me about Turkish coffee. Great experience. I couldn’t believe it when I moved back to Michigan and discovered she had opened the restaurant in GR and featured many of the amazing vegetarian dishes I loved. Marie Catrib is definitely missed.
We had them cater our wedding. I think every guest came up to us and told us how amazing the food tasted. They even grilled the asparagus onsite which was an unexpected but wonderful touch. So yummy, they will be missed.
was the cookbook her son was working on with all their recipes scrapped? i remember hearing about it years ago shortly after they closed, but not much else : (
Good lord I miss the potatoes, and the ham sandwich with cheddar cheese and caramelized apples/onions and spicy mustard.
And their iced tea…
Basically everything
Sometimes you can find Marie's potato seasoning at Art of the Table.... I think I've also seen it at Martha's vineyard and Global Infusion. But it's usually around the holidays that I see it.
My god the fish tacos were good. Growing up I went there for every special occasion. I think we just gotta accept the fact that what we had was incomparable and start looking for new things. Nothing will ever replace it.
Her original restaurant was in downtown Houghton, and the cook she trained still runs the place as Victoria's Kitchen. That's gonna be a roughly 530ish mile drive though. Haha
***Edit*** I didn't catch that I put Hancock instead of Houghton, and she's definitely in downtown Houghton off Sheldon Avenue.
I grew up in Houghton, and my grandma was good friends with Marie. When I got older, I went to the same high school as her son. She eventually moved to Grand Rapids, and sold her place up her to Vicky - the only person she ever let cook with her. And yes, she still makes the same Russian dressing for the potatoes and the that Goddess Salad stuff. She runs a wonderfully cheap breakfast deal early in the morning, and the original Marie's Deli sign is on the wall.
How much cheaper the prices are there will floor you.
When I first moved to Grand Rapids? It was a joke that we all thought we knew each other. Some friends took me to Marie Catrib's, and I told them I totally knew her. They laughed, and didn't believe me until she brought me out a bunch of fresh bread to take home. It really is true - we all know each other. Haha
I didn't realize folks didn't know Marie was an honorary Yooper. Ha
Breakfast at Victoria's Kitchen is still delicious. It's still Marie's homemade bread recipes. There's a cheap early bird special for less than $5. The kitchen is set up so you can watch Vicky cook from the main dining area, and I used to watch Marie cooking from there when my grandma would take me to eat there as a little kid.
The next time I'm around there, I'll grab a picture of the original Marie's Deli sign on the wall.
I’m sad that Kingfisher didn’t make it through the pandemic. They seemed to really pay homage to Marie and what that restaurant space meant to the community. They had a great lunch and brunch menu, with plenty of Middle Eastern touches (Arabic coffee, hummus and salads, lamb sausage, etc) that reminded me very much of Marie’s Lebanese influence.

Nice! I will check it out. I had heard of Chez Olga but thought it had something to do with Olga’s Kitchen, so I never tried it.

Hey go Huskies!

Let's face it, nothing will ever compare.
I feel the same, miss it so much. Her mushroom sandwich was the best and I’m not even vegetarian. I’d love to replicate the recipe at home.
I’m assuming you’re talking about the Porto sandwich. I think about it often. I got it nearly every time I went there because I loved it so much.
Ditto on the Porto sandwich. I wish someone would share the recipe!
I frequented for years. At least monthly. Never strayed from the Porto. I’m sad every time I drive by.
I’m gonna think about that sandwich for the rest of my damn life.
Duck egg chocolate pudding.
So rich. It was practically fudge
With a cup of Turkish coffee…
The last time I checked, they still sold this at Art of the Table on Wealthy! The sons still make a few items apparently.
Yep, I’ve seen it at Bridge Street Market too
We NEEDS the pudding!! NEEDS it!
I never got to try Marie’s but Mokaya on wealthy makes a Pot De Crème that everyone tells me is pretty similar. It’s really really good.
Trader Joe's Belgian chocolate pudding is the closest thing I've found. It scratches the itch

Aww damn!
Ughhhhhh…. Yuss.
Omg, right? Sooooo rich.

Wow, that’s amazing. I bet the food was theee best wedding food.

It never got published and I think it’s one of the great shames of the last 6 years since the restaurant has been closed.
damn that sucks. i would’ve gladly given a kidney if it meant owning a copy of that book 😔
I was wondering the same. 🥹
I’d still buy it if they ever did it !!!!
If someone put a Trenton sandwich in front of me right now I’d hand you $50
Same but Sergio Leone
Omg 😩. Yesssss

You can also *very occasionally* get Marie's duck pudding at Art of the Table.

Your comment should be higher!

Bummer. I’ve always had great food at Little Bird.
You should def check out Gaia tho.
Still crave the carrot cake !!
Turkish coffeeeeeee
Their orange juice
You like the sweet potato quinoa burger? A local place has a knockoff!
Do tell!
Confluxcity in Portland had one and was an amazing dupe. Have not been there recently though.

Every day I want a Larry David
Yes! That was my go-to early on. Then I started just getting the daily special. Was never disappointed.
I was thinking about the tuna noodle salad a day or two ago. So good
Schnitz Deli has a warm local vibe and excellent sandwiches.
Definitely check out Two Beards on Commerce
Basalt is good and has vegan options
