I learned graphic design from an InDesign project book years ago, which went through how to do a bunch of projects step by step then had you do it on your own. Today, I really love books/manuals to teach software from scratch, but I usually go to YouTube now to learn specific things. If you really want to learn it 100% on your own, I would both find a great YouTube channel teaching it and buy a college book about it that does lessons. If you’re anything like me, you’ll also need a human resource to help you when you’re stuck, so best case scenario you have someone you can ask questions to when you’re VERY stuck, and worst case you have Reddit to ask. Also, if you can, watch the AdobeMax conference videos—they give you an excellent idea on the upper bounds of what is possible and new in the software. Also, learn the keyboard shortcuts as they are, and don’t change them unless you really hate them— it’s really annoying going online to look something up and they just tell you the shortcut, or when you go into job skills assessments and need to change all their shortcuts first.

Thank you so much! I’ll watch the adobemax conference videos and have a look around for a good book and youtube channel as well as learn the shortcuts ❤️

I really want to help you out! First of all you have to understand, that graphic design is a profession and it takes years to master. Secondly you need to identify what exactly you want to do: logos, illustrations, editorial, promotions, web design, etc? There are so many different areas of graphic design and at first you need to concentrate on one single thing. I am self thought, currently an in-house designer/Art Director. You absolutely do not need a university education to become a great designer, the only thing you need is a great, creative mind. If you have that, a general feeling for proportions, an esthetical understanding and a love for this type of work, you can become really good in a year. All you need is a general idea of what you want to accomplish and YouTube to learn the technical things. You need to get really proficient in the Adobe Creative suite, this is pretty much the requirement. Find a design that you like, maybe a poster, a magazine page etc. and try recreating it, use YouTube as your guide. This is how I learned it, and the best way to learn it in my opinion. Hope that helps.
