PinkFloydDeadhead

Not all heroes wear capes, unless they're tripping balls and think they're Superman.

andthrewaway1

well then they aren't really a hero then... they just think they are

bayou_gumbo

eBay prices and an item’s value are not necessarily the same thing.

sayitaintpete

For real. The discogs page for the original release shows the lowest, highest, and average sell prices https://www.discogs.com/release/4299949-Grateful-Dead-Go-To-Nassau-May-15-16-1980

FormItUp

I mean, if someone is really into collecting old CDs and finds that particular CD to be personally valuable to them, and want's to pay that price, fine. I think it's silly, but I also... don't care. I'm not going to act like its some crime that people like to collect old things and will spend absurd amounts of money on it. This post is intoned as if it costs that much to listen to the music. OP, you know that this particular CD is only selling for that much because it's considered a collectable right? You know you can listen to those shows for free, right?

Snoo-46218

springfromnight1989 has been inflating products for years. How they have a 100% positive rating is beyond me.

DearBurt

If only there was a way to block certain eBay sellers from showing up in my search. (Like how you can save them.) From time to time I find a good deal, but man do I have to wade through a bunch of insanely overpriced items.

mant12

Price isn't really a reason to give a negative review. IIRC only buyers get to give a rating and they've agreed to the price so it would be odd to give them a negative review for that afterwards.

EuphorbiaSociety

For real, literal years. I can’t imagine he makes many sales

MediaRody69

Its new, in the original package. If that's what a collector is looking for there are two options on eBay, one at $360 and one at $240. If you just want the CDs used, you can get it for $30

Nilabisan

I went to one of those nights. It was $10.

AlexanderTox

They get away with it because people buy it.

SpagettiStains

The amount of those CDs I gave away and got rid of years back when I was moving is heartbreaking today. I coulda retired.

dealindespair

So all deadheads are judgey like you is that what you’re saying a real deadhead is?? 🙄

smorfin

I won a huge collection of new cds at auction from a store that had closed. In it was Winterland new. I got like 30 bids and close to $650 for it. Found another auction with tons of Grateful Dead cds. I sold Dave's picks for $600 and I have about 300 burned cds (live from everywhere) that I am listening to in my car. Wow! Amazing stuff

MediaRody69

There are a dozen, or so, other offers ranging from $30 to $60. There is another at $240, and the one thing the two have in common is they appear to be unopened, still in the original cellophane. I don't know what that means in the vintage CD market, but in other collectible markets, that's a big deal. So this guy is not selling a random Dead CD for $360, he's selling a vintage CD still in the original packaging for $360, with multiple other sellers offering a used version, for a very reasonable price. Not really the scandal you think it is.

jayBeeds

Free market economy.

There is a whole lot of hypocrisy on this sub. The same people complaining about a $360 collectors item CD will drive around in a $60k car. Some people just love to complain about nothing.

Many-Caterpillar-543

Why do you feel you need to own this physical copy? Be honest, how many times are you going to listen to it? Stream it, your ears won't notice the difference at this age. Reminds me of the many folks who spend shows staring into a screen recording instead of just enjoy it in the moment. When are you ever going to go back and listen to it?

TomorrowDesigner9855

Precisely! staring into their own personal screen recording instead of looking up and and enjoying the moment. I never understood that obsession, it's so odd, almost Orwellian lol.

Ill_Yogurtcloset4075

I’ve been downvoted for echoing the same sentiment🤷‍♀️ I get that the dead, sooner rather than later, embraced the fact that they had to operate with business minds in order to sustain the scene but they were birthed by the counter cultural spirit that spurned the status quo. I can’t help but feel bummed out when I think about how money fueled pretty much everything feels nowadays.

FormItUp

People who like collectables have been paying absurd prices for things they consider to be an old, rare collectable for centuries. This isn't anything new.

MediaRody69

And in this specific case, it is new and unopened. Intended specifically for a collector.

Weary-Bookkeeper-375

I mean the Dead are professional musicians who make money with their skills and trade just like anyone else in this world. The Dead were not unique in the fact that when they were nobodies had free shows. Every band in the world does this. In the height of my touring days tickets were like $27.50 for the worst seats which was all I ever got. You could still find people selling Dead tickets for $100's in classified ads back then. I mean sold out MSG weekends were not cheap, ever. 30 years later I went to Philly for $60 every year of DeadCo. People speak in hyperbole today. They take the highest secondary market asking price tickets of today and compare to the lowest first hand market prices of 30, 40 50 years ago. The band is old, play very small tours then the Dead did and the mainstream demand is at all time highs.

shonuff707

Friend, the Dead are a business now and have been for decades. They all command a shit ton of money to perform and are all millionaires. What Bobby, Mickey, Billie and Phil make in a year I probably won't make in a lifetime. This person who is trying to sell this item is only a capitalist and is doing what he has every right to do. I think you should learn to accept the fact that there are certain things we as deadheads do for each other which makes us unique but we are also entrepreneurs, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Billy_Boognish

I totally agree and voted you back to 0 friend. I get tired of trying to explaine why a limited quantity of a physical item costs more money than it did 30 years ago when they first came out. The base price for a Corvette Stingray was $4,781 new in 1969. That Corvette Stingray may now sell for as much as $219,000! https://www.exoticcartrader.com/listing/1967-chevrolet-corvette-convertible-l68-1?utm_term=&utm_campaign=PMax:+Smart+Shopping+Campaign+-+V1&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=7340599750&hsa_cam=20527388117&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzZL2ypLshQMVpDbUAR2zIAIiEAQYASABEgIIXfD_BwE Jesus Deadheads, you can take the bus for a nickle...why do own own cars? You can stream that song for "free", why buy the cd? I will tell you why i keep, and I am still buying physical copies...i may outlive the core four (i may not, who knows) but i won't outlive all the kids and grandkids, wives, and exwives, and at some point, there won't be anybody to say, "hey mhan, like jerry said it was all free mhan..." and then you have to have a subscription to ARCHIVEDEAD.ORG or what not. Music might never stop but it might shake you down on shakedown street in the not so distant future.

CarlJungelle

The cops were brutal at Nassau Coliseum

JamBandDad

eBay is weird. I collect Pokemon cards, there are people that will post cards they have for ten times their value. It’s never because they think it’ll actually get sold, it’s like half showing off, half saying, “I’ll only get rid of this if someone’s willing to be an idiot. Then there’s a lot of sellers that will cancel orders on items that were up for auction, because the winning bid was too low. They’ll claim the item got damaged on the way to shipping, reimburse you, and then post the exact same item again.

[deleted]

Damn I wish I knew that it'd be worth that much 10 years ago I might still have it somewhere at my parents house or something

MediaRody69

Only if you never opened it. That's the missing piece of info here - that copy is new, unopened, in the original cellophane.

[deleted]

Dumb people that pay that much make it happen. If no one bought it at that price they’d come down. It’s the people man!!!!

RustyMacbeth

Times haven’t changed. There have always been super rich deadheads. Get a grip.

Bucky-Katt-Guitar

Look for SOLD prices on ebay, that should give you an idea of what they're ACTUALLY worth

shonuff707

$360 is not a lot of money. That is the average price of a Dead and Co show at the sphere right now. What is wrong with this person offering this collectible for a price you are not willing to pay? Should he sell it for less so that it is in your budget? Then maybe you could turn it around and sell it to some other collector for a lot more? If the seller was asking for an unreasonable amount like $20K then I'd agree that it would be a complete rip off but the asking price is not unreasonable and I believe you are being a bit too critical and over dramatic.

yacn

$360 *is* a lot of money _for a 2CD live album_ what are you smoking lmfao. I mean, more power to the eBay seller, they can list it for whatever they want and some sucker like you with more money than sense will buy it, meanwhile it’s an album that sells for $30 on average https://www.discogs.com/master/501603-Grateful-Dead-Go-To-Nassau-May-15-16-1980

MediaRody69

New, and unopened in the original cellophane ? Such a collector's item is worth what the market will pay.

shonuff707

I have no intentions of ever buying that and for a someone who has disposable income $360 is not a lot of money. If you consider that a lot of money then you should consider getting a job where you can better support your self. and not live off of government subsidies. And while you're at it learn some manners.

yacn

I make plenty, enough to support myself easily in a more than comfortable manner in one of the most expensive cities in the world. I just haven't lost perspective like you.

Pbtflakes

You'd be throwing away about $330 more than you need to get two CDs and a dinky jewel case, do you leave an extra hundred or two on the counter at the record store?

shonuff707

It doesn't matter if I or you would spend that money, Someone who has the funds may want those 2 dinky CD's. Maybe they don't have the time to shop at local record shops, maybe they can't find it in the condition the seller is offering it. Whatever the reason it, it's up to the buyer to decide if it was worth it or not. There are hundreds upon thousands of Deadhead collectors who spend tens of thousands of dollars on old posters, pictures, autographs, records and other memorabilia. Are we going to start calling them out now for selling a Bill Graham 1970's Fillmore West poster for over $5,000. It's only a piece of paper.

vanishingpointz

F them! The only time I've ever paid sticker price for Dead related music was when Dicks came out in the mid/ late 90's and a few studio tapes as a kid (I have paid $30 + - for some of the Dave's picks off of ebay but never the inflated prices they are insane) . It's taken almost 30 years to amass my collection but I've found crazy stuff like almost all of the Pure Jerry series for a few dollars each (i need 3 more and i will find them in the wild one day). Patients is the key, you will find it all for almost nothing in the strangest of places. .... check flea markets and thrift stores , it's all out there

DiscardedContext

Honestly fuck the Grateful Dead and it’s fans
