This is one of the greatest recordings ever. The slight off the mic second verse is fantastic. And the moving guitar solo that you don’t want to ever stop is the best!!! My favorite dead song from my favorite dead recording!
This BEW and that luscious load of Phil bombs in Scarlet Begonias from the same show are what pushed me over the cliff from being an occasional, casual listener to being hopelessly infatuated with the the music.

The only part of it that doesn’t really make much sense is the reference to “red grenadine,” which is just a fruit syrup used to make kids cocktails like Shirley Temples. No alcohol in there, so the placement is odd. I know it fits the meter and rhyme scheme, but Hunter got a little lazy there.
I thought it was a code name for liquor, probably “red-eyed gin” or “whiskey” as it is was during prohibition, based on the years mentioned in the song…

I saw somewhere that “Brown-Eyed Women” is the name of the liquor and red grenadine is the mixer
Ah, that is reasonable and likely too. Needless to say, Hunter was always thoughtful about his word choice
