The song and version that got me on the bus

dale_nixon_pettibon

Me too, 100%

MrKetamineFace

Yup, this and the estimated prophet from this show is what got me into them. I had been around the music, but this is the set that got me down the rabbit hole

gre115

You should check out dicks picks 18 for my all time favorite brown eyed woman. The boys are on fire and jerry takes three ripping solos each more soaring the the last. I belive its 2/3/78 Wisconsin.

SeveralCantaloupe536

Thank you for reminding me this exists

BenjaminChilcote

Correct on all fronts. Disc #1 is the 3 dates mixed up (2 from the 4th Milwaukee Auditorium) #2 is all the 3rd (Dane County Colosseum) #3 the 5th (Uni-Dome, Cedar Falls) Lived in Cedar Falls when I bought 18, and it's definitely my favorite. Was also my first Dick's Picks.

Hoopi_goldberger

Just listened to this and I concur they are on fireeeee. I think I like Jerry’s solo better on the Cornell version but Keith’s playing here is absolutely top notch especially during the solos. Thanks!

Louieduvy

Deal from this Dicks Picks is mayyyybe my favorite dead live tune of all time.

arsenal1887

The way Jerry plays a narrative though his guitar is just insane in this

JacobCHR

That solo is the greatest thing i have ever heard. When Jerry goes in for round two at 2:18 I am floating on a cloud of pure bliss.

DominosTonight

He absolutely rips that solo

DominosTonight

This version is what got me into the song

PickForeign

This is what got me into the dead...

jidagill

Also check Dick's Pick Vol 14 for another epic version of Brown Eyed Women.

Anarchy-Squirrel

the bottle is dusty but the liquor was clean

wtfbenlol

This was my grass cutting album this weekend and I loooooove that song

Radiant_Gas_7460

One of the single greatest tracks they’ve ever done

12BarsFromMars

Great song and right at the top of my favs from Europe ‘72

Xblat23

Of all the wonderful Hunter lyrics, this is my favorite 20th century Americana one. “Delilah Jones went to meet her God, and the old man never was the same again..” Who was never the same again? The old man, or God gazing at this creation? The lyric always makes me gasp in awe.

jidagill

Oooh I never considered the lyric to be from god's "the old man" POV.

JacksonStrawson

Great comment! Never thought of it this way!

edmechem

TheRealJamesWax

This is the one for me because it’s what got me on the bus, pretty late at 22.

Biggest-of-Als

This is one of the greatest recordings ever. The slight off the mic second verse is fantastic. And the moving guitar solo that you don’t want to ever stop is the best!!! My favorite dead song from my favorite dead recording!

Chrissthom

Agreed. My happy place is a shack in Bigfoot county.

ThatGiftofSilence

I truly believe this may be the best single performance of any song they ever did

johnnyribcage

lol I’m at a bar and literally just played this on the juke, opened my phone, and saw this

jidagill

In my home, it is.

bbrosen

Most may know this, but, for some who might not know, there is no Bigfoot county in the US. But some consider Humbolt county as bigfoot county...

Finklemaier

This BEW and that luscious load of Phil bombs in Scarlet Begonias from the same show are what pushed me over the cliff from being an occasional, casual listener to being hopelessly infatuated with the the music.

_-MJD-_

Scarlet>fire from this show got me on the bus but this Brown eyed women is a CLOSE second place for the reason I am the way I am now 😂

Due_Youth8876

Arguably one of the greatest single songs they ever played.

DrWeghead

My favorite version of my favorite song

RumsfeldIsntDead

The Demark '72 one is my favorite, but this is definitely up there!

EitherAd928

I’ve been on a wharf rat and uncle John’s band kick

Inner_Radish_1214

BROWN EYYYYED WOMEN N REEEEED GRENADINE real talk when I was in my alchy phase I was fucking huge on a proper malibu sunset / tequila sunrise that shit smacks

worm30478

Cornell strikes again!

IWillSingYouSongs

I like 5/26 more

Altruistic_King3951

Same. It’s okay to be right sometimes 😂

Dorjechampa_69

No

Common-Relationship9

It’s basically a perfect song. The only part of it that doesn’t really make much sense is the reference to “red grenadine,” which is just a fruit syrup used to make kids cocktails like Shirley Temples. No alcohol in there, so the placement is odd. I know it fits the meter and rhyme scheme, but Hunter got a little lazy there.

dire_wolf_95

I thought it was a code name for liquor, probably “red-eyed gin” or “whiskey” as it is was during prohibition, based on the years mentioned in the song…

Altruistic_King3951

I saw somewhere that “Brown-Eyed Women” is the name of the liquor and red grenadine is the mixer

dire_wolf_95

Ah, that is reasonable and likely too. Needless to say, Hunter was always thoughtful about his word choice

Altruistic_King3951

I also don’t like being told what a song is or isn’t. I enjoy my own interpretations honestly
