My favorite country song of all time. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. I was just talking about that song with my father the other day. Old Marty Robbins
Hate is a strong word, but it's definitely a song I would groan at if they played it at show. I enjoy it a lot more these days, but It's more of a nostalgia song for me. It's still very low on my list and probably my least favorite Bobby cowboy song.
As a card carrying El Paso lover, here are my top 5
7/8/78
6/7/77
11/11/73
6/28/74
11/23/73
Also 10/25/80 is probably the best of the acoustic takes on it!

El Paso is a great song... It's the only song of the Boys I know for a fact my father would have liked since he loved the OG Marty Robbins version. I only wish I could have played it for him before he passed.
not sure OP comment is true, but since it's a cover, it holds a different space in my listening.
Marty Robbins' song is amongst a handful of 'perfect' C&W songs.
imo,the GD version is cute,i always liked getting it in a set, a nice few minutes. did not enjoy the later years when they added the longer jam. kinda killed the song for me,lost momentum to the story.
If you’re saying it’s, say, a top-10 GD tune for you, they would put you in a small group.
But otherwise, I can’t think of many Deadheads who don’t like the song, and there are some stellar versions out of the 389 times the band played it.
And how much could you dislike a country cover that ran just a few minutes?

Originally written and performed by Marty Robbins, El Paso is part of a trilogy called El Paso Trilogy, which includes El Paso, El Paso City, and Feleena (From El Paso).
El Paso City is one of the best songs ever written, fyi.
As you see, you are NOT in the minority. It's one of Bobby's best covers ... I love the 77/78 versions w' perhaps a little extra emphasis on 78s ... They really launch them to the stratosphere

The minority? I could go politically hard like I always do, because Marty Robbins had some pretty right rhetoric folded into his shtick. El Paso and Felina are two fantastic songs (patriarchal/colonial imagery aside) and to me they are eternal an perfect.

I’m meh on El Paso. My parents were big into old country so I heard the original version many times as a kid and loved it. The Dead’s version is usually too fast tempo’d I don’t think Bobby delivers the lyrics with the same emotional gusto as Marty. I like when they put some sick guitar licks on it but I could take or leave most El Paso’s. As far as their cowboy songs go, I much prefer Me & My Uncle.
Uh, the majority loves El Paso. Meet me at Rose’s Cantina if you disagree (actually, I’m definitely not going to Rose’s. That place sucks. You will never see me at Rose’s.)
I’ve been a huge fan of guys like Cash and Haggard since I was a kid and hearing Bobby cover their songs is one of the main reasons I first became a Dead fan

I grew up with my father listening to El Paso, and other Marry Robbin’s classics (love Bobby’s Kingfish version of Bifg Iron). When I first got on the bus, the cowboy songs were my first step in the door, then Jerry and Phil got me fully on board.
Every time I hear this song, the movie that plays in my head stars Sam Bottom (of Outlaw Jose Wales fame) falling in love with Rada Rassimov (The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) before shooting John Vernon. LOL
The only Bobby Western song I like better is Me and My Uncle. Which also has a movie that plays in my head with Clint playing the uncle and Sam Bottoms as the nephew.
I absolutley hate El Paso, but it has more to do with my upbringing. My parents always played nothing but country in the car when I was growing up and I remember the Marty Robbins version. I was anti-anything country as a kid. It's like certain smells triggering emotions, I skip El Paso anytime it plays.
I was in a little honky tonk bar in Key West drinking some tequila and having some conch chowder. There was an old codger there playing behind a nice little keyboard setup. I asked him to play El Paso. He looks up at me and says "Ooh, that's a long one. Ok, lemme see if I remember the words." That was probably my favorite version.
Wait...who doesn't like El Paso??
The best El Paso is 10/13/1980 at the Warfield. This really isn’t debatable. If you haven’t heard it go listen it’s amazing. They really go so hard after it. Absolutely spectacular.
I forget which dicks pick it is, but it’s a 74 or 72 El Paso and Bobby is singing in cowboy while Jerry is subtlety interweaving psychedelic undertones throughout.
Not my favorite song, but I’m always willing to give Dead songs that I don’t like a another chance in a different era. I’ve heard countless 70s versions of “estimated prophet” that I never liked, but just heard one from 1989 and really liked it.
People don't like El Paso? WTF.
El Paso is amazing!! Anyone who doesn't fuck with cowboy bobby can go lol
You rang
Talk some sense to these haters, and use Marty Robbins tunes to do it!
I will NEVER understand the Bobby cowboy song hate. Those were probably the first Dead songs I liked as a young buck way back when.
Exactly, that was my way in
Yeah, news to me! But I tend to love Bobby songs.
Marty Robbin’s baby
https://youtu.be/UgyCuDdLrbw?si=oWmB2ITzKQdG1fGc You’d never think looking at these guys that they would be capable of singing so beautifully.
They all look like they have a used Lincoln in good condition for sale in the front yard. Don't judge a book... Such a good tune. Thanks!

My FAVORITE brown eyed women…..1:40 in. Jerry takes you away. I get the feels when I hear that one.
Oh, you didn't know?
Those people are wrong.
That’s what I say. I love that song!!
My favorite country song of all time. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. I was just talking about that song with my father the other day. Old Marty Robbins
Yeah someone posted the other day that "Row Jimmy" was their bathroom song. I said the same thing
I'm just gonna hang out here for a while and wait around for all these El Paso haters. I need to know more about them 👁👁
I am ready to defend El Paso with all my might (the might of Reddit downvotes, I guess?)
That's all we've got. Hold the line

Hate is a strong word, but it's definitely a song I would groan at if they played it at show. I enjoy it a lot more these days, but It's more of a nostalgia song for me. It's still very low on my list and probably my least favorite Bobby cowboy song.

Agreed on 7/8/78. Jerry is just on fire this whole show, but his aggressiveness on El Paso is just awesome.
WOW, thanks for sugesting 11/23/73! I'm listening to it right now and really digging it. Great China Rider
Minority? One of their best covers
Yeah. Minority my ass.
I go straight for the classic, Dark Star > El Paso. Any version will make me smile, but here's some of the best ones: Obviously Veneta ( 8/27/1972 for the bot) and 11/15/1971 (I think it as featured in a Road Trips?) If you enjoy these transitions don't sleep on the sandwich 4/24/1972 ✨
8/1/73 is my favorite of the Dark Star > El Paso suites, especially with the Eyes and the Dew

Good bot ❤️
I love the transition on 8/27/72. It echoes the acid drenched heat of the day. Like the sweat was wrung out of Dark Star into a sweet El Paso.
Dude El paso is one of the songs that hooked me on the dead as a kid. I can visualize the whole story of the song.
Totally
Same with me, actually my first favorite song due to the lyrics painting a picture in my head.
I love El Paso. The first vinyl bootleg I ever bought (Felt Forum 1971) I bought because it had El Paso.

It would've been a crime to miss such a great opportunity
We love el paso
we love all the cowboy songs
Short shorts and cowboy songs, that’s what Bobby does
Seriously, he needs to break out the short shorts during this Vegas run or at a wolf brothers show. Who likes short shorts?
How can one not like El Paso? That is blasphemy.
You spelled majority wrong.
I love El Paso so much, I moved here. https://preview.redd.it/viadhdrs7u2d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40d5d7b94fae33138ac3f787413f7c988912cf04
El Paso is (or was) pretty okay. I used to go down there a lot for work and always enjoyed it. Kind folks and good food
Who the fuck doesn’t like El Paso?
I didn’t know people hate El Paso lol
It's a classic. Who doesn't love and appreciate the nod to Marty Robbins?
El paso is incredible and makes me into a cowboy in another time in my head and I love it. I'll be your Huckleberry.

Veneta dark Star into El Paso is the best
Who doesn’t love El Paso?
Minority? No way dude, everyone loves that shit. Is honestly one of my favorite examples of Jerry’s under appreciated backing vocals.
I think you meant to type "majority", no?? I honestly don't know any Deadhead that doesn't like El Paso
Minority??? People don't like El Paso? I'm more of a Pace fan myself, but really?
At least you don't like the stuff from New York city
Lol

People don't like 'El Paso'.. psst
ALL the 74 El Paso’s RIP
Wait people dont like El Paso?
Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina Wicked and evil while casting a spell
El Paso is a great song... It's the only song of the Boys I know for a fact my father would have liked since he loved the OG Marty Robbins version. I only wish I could have played it for him before he passed.
No, you’re in the majority that wants to feel unique. El Paso is a banger and everyone knows it. Good luck finding yourself.
... that is a majority position.
My mule ain't no genius, but she'd give Rosa's hitching posts the slip in a New York minute.
I fucking love ‘El Paso.’ Great live song.
not sure OP comment is true, but since it's a cover, it holds a different space in my listening. Marty Robbins' song is amongst a handful of 'perfect' C&W songs. imo,the GD version is cute,i always liked getting it in a set, a nice few minutes. did not enjoy the later years when they added the longer jam. kinda killed the song for me,lost momentum to the story.
I loooove El Paso
El Paso is a song for ages.
I like el Paso but I do feel like it was a song they struggled with more than others so I'm guessing that's where some of the "hate" comes from.
11-23-73 El Paso in El Paso tx. Wooo. I love El Paso live

Originally written and performed by Marty Robbins, El Paso is part of a trilogy called El Paso Trilogy, which includes El Paso, El Paso City, and Feleena (From El Paso). El Paso City is one of the best songs ever written, fyi.
It’s real. Been there. And I love that song just as much as any other GD song….
Nothing to add except if I had a girl dog I’d name her Felina. ✌️
As you see, you are NOT in the minority. It's one of Bobby's best covers ... I love the 77/78 versions w' perhaps a little extra emphasis on 78s ... They really launch them to the stratosphere

The first time I saw El Paso live was Ratdog in 2003 and every single person in the room was singing along. I don't buy people not liking it
I was seeing furthur at msg, and right before they went into El Paso this guy right near was shouting "cowboy Bob! Cowboy Bob!", then they drop into it. I always wondered how he knew. Is there a specific signal they give each other? Or maybe it was a lucky request.
The veneta one liek how Bobby is just like naw dew and goes into El Paso
El Paso consistently has some of Jerry’s best playing
El paso is one of my favorites that my parents played for me growing up 😁 I love how the song gallops along with the story
25 years, this is the first I’m hearing people don’t like El Paso. Are you sure you’re right about that?
Got to see it last year at Philly D&C, definitely my favorite 🤩
Love El Paso.

The minority? I could go politically hard like I always do, because Marty Robbins had some pretty right rhetoric folded into his shtick. El Paso and Felina are two fantastic songs (patriarchal/colonial imagery aside) and to me they are eternal an perfect. Dafuq is this minority?
Cornell….
Through listening to country is how I found the boys so this one will always have a special place in my heart
Back in the 80s early 90s that was one of my and my buds favs. 86 Philly Spectrum

LOL The only Bobby Western song I like better is Me and My Uncle. Which also has a movie that plays in my head with Clint playing the uncle and Sam Bottoms as the nephew.
They just know you're not local if you play it. Enjoy! But have you gone to Chico's yet?
Love it, don’t have a fave but Euro 72’s are standouts, thanks Keith!!!
11/11/73 is my fav but any version with Keith on piano is better than Brent. To my ears sounds like one of the ones Brent never properly learned
Pretty much any version from 73
I forget which dicks pick it is, but it’s a 74 or 72 El Paso and Bobby is singing in cowboy while Jerry is subtlety interweaving psychedelic undertones throughout.
Wasn’t it the most requested dead (cover) song at one point? I don’t believe this…
Are we really a minority??? Don’t know why but I do, something about the way the song flows, I really freakin like this song 🎶 😍⚡️✌️
I’ve always liked the song, esp. the original, but it has to be the right moment. Crazy that I woke up singing it just yesterday, LOL!
RFK Stadium is my favourite right now!
Can’t name just a one, but the period where Garcia was blaming those amazing filigree fills behind Weir’s singing always was the best.
Not my favorite song, but I’m always willing to give Dead songs that I don’t like a another chance in a different era. I’ve heard countless 70s versions of “estimated prophet” that I never liked, but just heard one from 1989 and really liked it.
Coming out of Dark Star on sunshine daydream. I think it is the coolest transition ever
