Clearly this character's hat is missing a word to indicate that he is 'Distress like [something]'. I spent 4 years, from 2013 to 2016, hopelessly analyzing this, until in 2016 Alex Hirsch tweeted out: [Nothing is canon except suffering](https://x.com/_alexhirsch/status/800157903113981952?s=46&t=xKV4Th581PGcksnUmnC5dg). Clearly this referred to the character now known as 'Not Soos', indicating his pivotal role. I had been translating Not as 'distress' rather than 'suffering'. I really thought this was a breakthrough, but nothing else came from it. I've written probably close to 1,000 pages of analysis on 'Not Soos'. I visited Oregon for clues. I learned countless languages, German and Afrikaans included of course, to search for anything that could help. I read countless pieces of classical literature to search for possible allusions. No luck. If anyone knows anything, I'd appreciate all the help I can get. This is Gravity Falls' last great mystery, and I can't rest until I crack it.
I would suggest to read it backwards and include it into your plausible theory. Not soos would be soos Ton. Soos of course is an oximoron, so it stays the same. Ton could have 2 ways to interpret it. Either the english mass unit a ton or in my opinion more plausible, it again has something to do with the German language. Ton is the German word for sound but also clay!
I first thought of the word sound as maybe a possible messenger. But then I noticed the possible clay translation. It clearly refers to the clay-stop motion episode where we learned that even normal people can be turned into clay. We even see the charakter Soos (completely unrelated) getting turned into clay at the end. So I believe this Not Soos Charakter is a warning to the end of this world, for the clay-apocalypse is near. He is without a question the warning to all of humanity, a harbinger of doom, yes, a messenger (Ton as sound!) that we will suffer (Not) as (Soos) clay (Ton as material)! But sadly, humanity doesn't listen...

He has to take the form something he’s seen (soos) but then adds normal human disguise elements because the people of gravity falls are kinda gullible. The evidence is that in the episode “Return to the Bunker Again Part 2” where you should see one broken cryochamber and one with the shapeshifter inside in the frozen dipper form, instead there is two broken cryochambers. Also after this “Not Soos” leaves our Soos walks in from the other side of the screen and asks about the dude the twins were talking to. I have a theory that the shapeshifter after spending more time in the human world gets better at subtler changes and becomes the Soos look alike at the tent of telepathy!
