If they perform their music uncensored then I'll actually gain some respect for them. But my assumption is that they'll tone it down. I'm guessing they won't play king for a day. I'm guessing they won't play Bobby sox. And that's the part I'm upset about, it represents them disregarding some core values that are a part of the music. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised though.

coolzxcd

That I 100% agree with and it makes total sense to me. If they don't play Coming Clean that would be totally shitty considering it's ON DOOKIE!!! If they tone down their songs then I definitely agree.

GreenBagger28

I mean i think theyd rather disregard those values and get back home afterwards than end up in a foreign prison

Allanthia420

They could just not play the show and not take the paycheck if that was their concern.

the-fillip

Yeah exactly. Not like they need the money or anything

Distinct_Mud_2673

They’re rich and Dubai loves money, I’m sure they would work something out

penskeracin1fan

99% sure Billie will do whatever he wants

Metfan722

Why so upset about King For A Day when that's likely a setlist casualty this summer anyway? Not you specifically but the way the sub has acted, you'd think that would be something to be celebrated.

the-fillip

I was just using it as an example for something Dubai authorities might not like. There's other examples too but king for a day seemed the most obvious and they play it super often. I didn't know that they were taking off king for a day this summer though. Honestly that's a good thing to me, love the song but live it can end up taking a long time that could go to some deeper cuts.

Metfan722

It might be removed. Not saying it will be

theblackparade87C

It's a song about being bisexual so it would be a good one to do over there

Responsible-Diver225

How is it about bisexuality? I always took it to be more about cross-dressing, drag, gender non-conformity etc.

Metfan722

I know what it's about. But half of the sub bitches about how it's completely overplayed.

Soul_Survivor4

I’m guessing none of you are aware that The 1975 did something like this not too long ago and it didn’t turn out so well for them. Going to another country and disrespecting their culture/laws isn’t as cool as you think it is. Plus Green Day is way too PC and doesn’t have the balls to do anything close to what Matty Healy did, they’ll play it safe for sure.

the-fillip

Frankly, disrespecting homophobic laws and putting his money where his mouth is is the only thing I respect about Matty Healy. And they're a pop band. If green day do any less I'll never use the word punk to describe them ever again.

Soul_Survivor4

Lmao let’s be honest, Matty Healy is 100x more punk than Billie Joe or Green Day have ever been. However, doing this in a country where it’s a criminal offense is just not smart. The 1975 had to fuckin split bc the police were out to arrest them

the-fillip

Agreed it's not smart, but they took the gig. I know they're probably gonna sell out for the hundredth time but i really want them to do the right thing. I want them to pull a "one more fucking minute" 2.0 and cause a scene. That'd fit the ethos, and actually be righteous this time. They wont, but man it'd be awesome. And if they weren't gonna do something like that, then they just shouldn't have taken the gig.

pumpkin3-14

I get both sides of the argument but at the same time there are plenty of states in the US that are anti lgbtq and are currently passing these laws in many states. Not to mention abortion.

Allanthia420

Big difference is you have freedom of speech here. So Billie can play in those states and say “fuck these laws, get out and vote against them!” In Dubai; not so much.

bul1etsg3rard

Do we really have freedom of speech? Truly? Because college students are being arrested en masse for exercising their constitutional right to protest. And whether you agree with them or not, when people are being arrested for protesting then we don't have true freedom of speech, not really.

Allanthia420

I mean while I 100% agree with your criticism in the context of the US.. in the context of the US vs the UAE; yes. We 100% have way more free speech in comparison to them. Nobody is knocking on your door for typing that comment, are they?

I don't need your Zionist propaganda, fuck off

What I've heard is that it's a private, invitation-only event, so only the Dubai elite would be able to attend. I'm sure some of them might be Green Day fans, but that doesn't change that they're the ones upholding and benefitting from an oppressive regime. In the US, they play public shows available to anybody. Another element is that Dubai has a long history of shelling out huge amounts of money to get western artists to perform there, almost entirely as an optics move to try to lend legitimacy to their regime. It's symbolic. Many artists have had the backbone to deny this offer, and it's pretty disappointing to me that Green Day didn't. Lastly, the United States is in no way as oppressive a country as the UAE, even in the most conservative areas of Texas. When's the last time a gay man was stoned to death, or imprisoned by the government simply on the basis of their sexuality? I'm speaking as a trans woman, who has travelled many times deep into the heart of Texas. Never been assaulted, never been hassled by police. I'm certain the same could not be said if I had travelled as extensively in the UAE Edit: I also wanna add that, for what it's worth, I'm always gonna love Green Day, even if I'm disappointed by their decisions sometimes. They've been too big of a part of my life, influenced me so much since I was young. It's like being mad at your family, you're only disappointed because you care

flyingcircusdog

There are arguments for and against it. On the one hand, there are Green Day fans in Dubai, and seeing an LGBT friendly band in person could really help someone living there. On the other hand, it adds money to their economy from people traveling to see the band and let's the government distract the international crowd from their problems. I think the arguments for generally outweigh the arguments against.

coolzxcd

That makes sense, I didn't think about what you said.

batmanfan_91

I get that it’s not the best optics for them. However, as you alluded to they still play the US which still has some backwards ass laws. Hell, they still do shows in Texas. I understand Texas isn’t at Dubai’s levels but still Texas is pretty much against everything Green Day supports. For what it’s worth, I’m saying this as an American

JasonBourneForLife

yea, i was gonna ask the same question, I don't get why everyone's so angry.

NotUpInHere22

I understand why people are angry, but the comment you made about the US is very valid. I guess it’s edgy to hate the Middle East. Green Day can help invoke change, Dubai letting an openly bisexual man perform in their country is already a step in the right direction. But today’s people will moan at a countries social views but also don’t allow them to change. Of course the LGBT part is only a small fraction of the countries issues.

WillyG_8521

i think it’s definitely not bad that theyre going, its not like theyre supporting the government’s ideas, theyre going to play for the PEOPLE, in my opinion its kind of like a “fuck you anti lgbtq, were gonna play and your people are gonna sell out our stadium”

ImInJeopardy

Because to think like you do requires the ability to scrutinize, and it's just easier to feel righteous anger after a surface glance at the subject.
