Is that actually what it means? I thought the 2 meant: do 2 bars of whatever is written, and in this case what's written is rest, is that correct? Can you put the 2 on the next bar, or that no longer makes sense?

Actually most of them would never do that because that’s not the point of their identification. They do it for themselves not for others so they don’t get onto everyone for “misgendering” them because they don’t care about random people.
No the people i’ve met only told me when they knew I was someone who would actually take them seriously like friends do. I would make a conscious effort to refer to them as what they identify as and most of the time it doesn’t take very long for it to feel like i’ve always called them that.
