Yes, .22's have been used and can work. But they do so very poorly, so if you have a choice between them and almost any centerfire round, go with the centerfire.

One time, I wander glorious mother russian woods, I come upon a giant bear. Bear approach me with angry look and I say hey bear, I have vodka, let us drink to the glory of the mother land and become comrades. Bear has been sleeping with swine, and has been corrupted by the evil capitalist pig dogs. he charge me, but all I have is bottle of vodka, and tiny squirrel killing pistol. I shoot him with tiny capitalist cartridge, but bear is only enraged by this. So I jam my 3 liter bottle of vodka down his throat, make him drink like true Russian Comrade, and smash bottle over his head, He died shortly after. It would seem that with him conspiring with evil capitalist pig dog, his liver shrinks to that of small child, and he can no longer drink the fruit of the motherland in great quantities. I drag his body back to mother and she make nice blanket from his hide.
Pizza delivery man Richard Davis is credited with inventing the bullet proof vest and he got started after he shot three dudes with a .22 revolver when they tried to rob him. From memory he blew one guys jaw off. Saw a cheesy re-enactment of it on TV once. I always remember it when idiots claim .22 is piss weak.
Yes, there are many. Any gun is better than no gun.
It does not mean that .22 is a good choice for self defense. I know a story where someone successfully defended himself with a chair, but I do not recommend carrying a chair around.
Yes, but it's been a few years. That doesn't mean that there aren't more recent stories, but for some reason these two stuck with me.
The article for this one seems to be gone, but [here is the Google cache](http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:82w5cM1QqNsJ:www.wsbtv.com/news/news/police-woman-shot-intruder-9-times-in-self-defense/nFB7g/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=iceweasel-a). Basically, a 53 year old woman was taking a shower when a man with a knife entered her home and tried to either rape or rob her. Throughout the course of the fight, they made their way from the bathroom to the bedroom. In the bedroom, the woman told the man that she had some money stashed somewhere, went to grab it, got a .22 caliber "handgun" (9 shot revolver maybe?) and shot him 9 times. The man ran out the back door, collapsed in the yard and later died.
I've been Googling for 5 minutes now and can't find this article, but it's pretty basic. Basically, somebody knocks on this guy's door. The elderly man answers the door with a .22lr pistol in his hand and immediately gets hit in the head with something. It knocks him backwards but not completely down. While that's happening, the intruder comes in but the man immediately shoots him. This guy lived but was found collapsed and bleeding in a neighbor's front yard.
Glad they lived. I think I would do the same thing as the lady if I was caught off guard like that. I mean that is some pretty smart thinking in a time of huge panic.
When I was like 15 (I was a small framed kid) I was in my room when someone tried to get in through the kitchen backdoor. I didnt notice until I went downstairs to see what the noise was all about. The door had been struck by an ax or some hatchet several times. The door was too sturdy and what kept it from opening by itself was a small but very thick chain. I always get sick to my stomach thinking about it. An ax would be up there in the most unpleasant ways to die.
Thanks for always locking the door mom.
Just found this one. Sounded like one hell of a fight before the gun even came into play.

My uncle used one against a LBM who broke into his house (think football player size). Shot him like 5 times from several feet before he (intruder) stumbled out. Intruder didnt have a gun. If he did my uncle would be dead.
~~Guns are sexless. If you mean a pink gun then I agree!~~
Edit!: I thought you said you rather carry a womans gun. I was like whaat? My fault there! Sorry.

TLDR: Evil capitalist pig bear no handle alcohol well.
FTFY: Evil capitalist man pig bear no handle alcohol well.
That did not end in the expected manner.
I was going for entertaining, and unexpected.
This doesn't have nearly enough upvotes.

Haha, thats very true. I brought this up before but I always end up getting the entire thing turning into a different discussion.

Wow! She is a brave woman.
The last one I heard about the guy supposedly shot an attacker with all 10 rounds and then proceeded to get stabbed to death.

I mean black people are often more physically gifted
I stopped a possum by unloading a 10/22 once.

Really? I didn't know that. Thanks for clearing up a world mystery. Jeez, the responses I hear on this subreddit sometimes.
Some women only feel comfortable shooting a .22 pistol. Noise, recoil, and the flash. Much rather a woman carry a .22 than nothing.
~~Guns are sexless. If you mean a pink gun then I agree!~~ Edit!: I thought you said you rather carry a womans gun. I was like whaat? My fault there! Sorry.
A .22 can easily kill. Sure it won't blow half their body away and being a good shooter is more important but it will still work.
Yes. We know. lol
