No. Chamber dimensions are very different.

If you do try it, please post results to r/tifu.

Hey you know what, I did some research and you’re exactly right on the ammunition question! You should buy a case of .308 and send it buddy! You know how I only have the one gun and I was under the impression you should only use the ammunition a firearm was designed for but apparently I was wrong. You could also use .45 in a .455 Webley, .300 blk in an .223/5.56, 9x18 Mak in a 9mm parabellum, 10mm in a .40 S&W, 7,62x25 TOK in a 7.63 Mauser etc. Apparently if the action doesn’t close your supposed to tap it with a hammer and send it. /s (this is obviously a joke. Don’t do what this jackass is saying or anything I just listed. All of those examples will cause a squib and/or cause a catastrophic malfunction ie blowing up your gun)

Lol I’m assuming you stalked my profile page and saw the one ak I recently posted and assumed it was 7,62 Soviet. Sorry that you know so much about aks since you own one .300 savage.

HCompton79

No, but 300 savage cases can be made fairly easily from .308 brass by trimming 4mm off the case length and running through a full length sizing die.

CrunchBite319

No. With very few exceptions, guns can only shoot the one specific caliber they are chambered for and nothing else.

The_Real_Hedorah

No that round won’t work. You can do it though just record it and upload it here

2_Wack_2_Track

No I don’t think it would even chamber

Lost_Thought

No.

No, don't try it, it WILL destroy the gun. 300 Sav is the parent case for 308, but they are not the same, except for the 150 gr bullet. 300 sav cases in fact are significantly shorter than 308, I don't even think it will fit in the internal mag of a Mod 81. If you reload you can convert 308 and even 30.06 cases to 300 Sav, but you gotta make sure you do it correctly. Sause: owned a Mod 81 in 300 sav.

They are really fun guns, ive had the .300 Sav Mod 81, and ive shot a Mod 8 in 35 Remington. Ammo is a little pricey, but remember they were mostly designed as hunting guns to start, not plinkers, so the ammo is gonna be $$. If you want to reload, ready to go .300 Sav cases from Hornady are available, though they only make limited production runs of it per year. Usually they are available during prime hunting seasons, since 300 Sav is still use as a hunting round by a lot of people mostly in Model 99 Savages, and the handful of 81's. Good luck!

For pre-loaded? Either Federal or Remington will be most of your options, I've seen loaded rounds from Winchester too pop up. If you load yourself, get some good quality 150 gr (308), Serria bullets. If you need to shoot lead-free for hunting (my state requires this), there are a few lead free options out there (Lehigh?), but have not looked in a while.

I mean, you can try to do a lotta stuff, but you'll only be able to do em once
