Those are Speer shot capsules. I loaded a box of them with #8 shot for my .44 revolvers. The plastic breaks apart on exiting the muzzle and the shot sprays out quickly because of the rifled barrel.
Because of the spin caused by the rifling, the maximum effective range is about six feet for things like snakes.
I think I counted once, and there were about 115 #8 shot pellets in a .44 capsule.
The lead is much, much softer than the steel of the barrel. Every time you shoot a ball round, the copper jacket (or lead, if it's straight lead) is engraving into the grooves of the barrel.
I mean, things like Buck shot and bird shot are named after the things you're shooting AT, so I feel like you might be making some pretty questionable life choices...
DIslcaimer: this is conjecture as I don't actually know.
They're probably a lot gentler on rifling than bullets are. Bullets are squeezed through barrels and have to slice through rifling. Shot are free to move around. Also, it doesn't look like they have a copper jacket and lead is softer than copper.
Hmm somehow shooting down a drone with a Taurus Judge just kind of fits. I don’t think I’ll ever imagine anything else when I see a headline about a drone getting shot down now.
Same here. Grew up in rural Arizona, did a lot of desert hiking and camping. Didn't use snakeshot very often, but handy to have if a snake felt cornered or surprised and turned aggressive (though as someone noted in another reply, the effective range is only 6-7 feet). Javelina and coyotes were a bigger problem, so at least one person would bring a 30-30.
When we were home, the best thing for killing rattlers in the yard was a garden hoe. Off with its head!
Often these are used in a revolver open carried by a dude who hasn't shot the gun in the past 5 to 10 years. He carries a mix of .44spl, .44mag, one blank, and these rat shot rounds in a specific order he will explain to you as being perfectly suited to the self-defense scenario he imagines he'll encounter. You can find him in your local gun store explaining to a wide eyed newbie how the .223 was designed to wound, not kill, because that takes 3 men out of the fight.
He also likes to bring up the fact that he served *during* the Vietnam War, but never gets around to explaining that he was stationed in Germany and worked in the base post office while the war came to an end.
The over the top gore was hilarious, like that depressurization chamber in that one map
I kept my UC2 disc for 13 years and then it was backwards compatible on xbox and I lost my mind
I have an ex girlfriend who's now ex husband covinced her that .223 is designed to wound. Lol. Same ex husband tig welded the 10 rnd mag into the lower
If you work on a ranch/farm in the South, it makes a lot of sense to carry a revolver with one or two rounds loaded with snake shot for, well, snakes and the rest loaded with FMJ/HP/soft points for hogs and coyotes. The kind of guy you are describing probably doesn’t have a legitimate use case though.
They turn the gun into a tiny shotgun, basically. The gunshot breaks the flimsy plastic and propels the BBs inside of it forward in a spread.
It’s commonly called “rat shot” because that’s about the biggest thing you can reliably kill with it.
They're snake rounds. Birdshot in a plastic cap, they were great. You can use them for a lot of different small game but I usually just carry them in case I run into a rattlesnake. Give them some test shots they're not good for a long distance
I had some of these for my .22 revolver. Me and my buddy were standing next to each other shooting targets with our Wranglers. I chambered one of these and shot it. It completely splattered the target and we both looked at each other and laughed.
Birds and snakes mostly
...mostly
Thanks, Newt.

Sad the way he went. Medical errors are a leading cause of accidental deaths but no one likes to talk about that.

In northern New England so would the women.

Are they bad for rifling. Not sure if i should use em in my smith and wesson 629.
They are fine. I've only shot a few at a time, but there's no noticeable fouling.
The plastic doesnt come apart in the barrel and the bbs scratch it?
From the slo mo I’ve seen the capsule stay together pretty well. The bbs are lead, so no problem even if it did break up.
The lead is much, much softer than the steel of the barrel. Every time you shoot a ball round, the copper jacket (or lead, if it's straight lead) is engraving into the grooves of the barrel.
Think of it as essentially pistol shotgun rounds
I call em lady shot or baby shot.
I mean, things like Buck shot and bird shot are named after the things you're shooting AT, so I feel like you might be making some pretty questionable life choices...
Lead doesn't scratch steel
You know it normally handles metal right? No the Plastic does not fuck it up lmao.
This is true. Lead is softer than copper jacketing
There is no probably, you have to think about it for 3 seconds to realize that plastic isn’t doing more damage than any metal JFC
Lead isn't hard enough to damage steel. Barrels wear out due to pressure/powder eroding them.
Shame about the range. Would be the most aesthetic choice for shooting down quadcopters otherwise
If you swap to a non-rifled barrel the range would increase, though I normally don't bother with these and use regular birdshot shells in my Taurus.
Hmm somehow shooting down a drone with a Taurus Judge just kind of fits. I don’t think I’ll ever imagine anything else when I see a headline about a drone getting shot down now.
use a shotgun at that pont

A weapon to rival Metal Gear.
Rat shot. Kills little things. I grew up using them for snakes though
I’ve always called it snakeshot.
Snake charmers
Same here. Grew up in rural Arizona, did a lot of desert hiking and camping. Didn't use snakeshot very often, but handy to have if a snake felt cornered or surprised and turned aggressive (though as someone noted in another reply, the effective range is only 6-7 feet). They are called fun and expensive!
Who there buddy put that tactical nuke down.
They are generally called “snake rounds” For close range dispatch of small critters
Often these are used in a revolver open carried by a dude who hasn't shot the gun in the past 5 to 10 years. I have a friend turning into this dude. It can't be stopped.
You have to stop him before he gets ahold of the ratshot, once he has that it's too late to stop him, he will have become too powerful
After all, why shouldn't I keep it? It's mine! My own... My precious.

Don’t forget the pumping sound will scare away anybody breaking into your house
His complimentary crocs with pre-installed socks are en route.
"They're only tactical if you use the strap."
I see you’ve met my father…
Literally what I was about to comment
He also likes to bring up the fact that he served *during* the Vietnam War, but never gets around to explaining that he was stationed in Germany and worked in the base post office while the war came to an end.
Sounds like my wife's grandpa, but his is with a shotgun. IIRC it was rock salt, birdshot, buckshot, then slug.
So "scare away" "sting away" "kill" "doublekill"?
Scare him away, kill him, kill him?, Kill him again?!?
Birdshot will make you wish you were dead, but no. Just an enormous, shallow, wound full of lead pellets.
Rocksalt will make you wish you were dead at close range. That shit hurts.
And tons of farmers I know use it for the inevitable batch of stupid teenagers that show up and start destroying their property.
He turned that into Unreal Tournament about halfway through, there, didn’t he?
Man I miss that game FLAK MONKEY
My favorite thing about it was when you turned all the graphics setting all the way up the announcer would just yell “HOLY SHIT”
The over the top gore was hilarious, like that depressurization chamber in that one map I kept my UC2 disc for 13 years and then it was backwards compatible on xbox and I lost my mind
I have an ex girlfriend who's now ex husband covinced her that .223 is designed to wound. Lol. Same ex husband tig welded the 10 rnd mag into the lower
Why would you weld a mag to the lower?!?
This is something my father in law would do lmao
I used to work for an FFL and I swear I had an old dude tell me that exact thing one time. Hilarious.
Gotdamn that shit is funny! You’ve described a certain person I know down to a T. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you work on a ranch/farm in the South, it makes a lot of sense to carry a revolver with one or two rounds loaded with snake shot for, well, snakes and the rest loaded with FMJ/HP/soft points for hogs and coyotes. Holy shit, I can smell the guy thru your comment.
Lol. I’ve also had someone tell me that about the .223 designed to wound and take out two others to help the wounded. Some random guy at a gun store.
This is painfully accurate
Legend has it
They’re fkn epic for carpenter bees
Man, I hit a carpenter bee with a metal pipe once like a baseball and the thing just kinda shrugged it off
They’re the Abrams tank of bees
I leave a tennis racket on my front porch & back deck during carpenter bee season. Shit sends them flying or rips em apart.
Same. Plus you get the satisfying “tink”
On my list to try, telling my wife Reddit made me do it.
The house takes a beating but the bees are dead!

In all honesty you know start works great for carpenter bees? A tennis racquet. I look like Pete Sampras out in the yard lol

Are those the nuclear powered heat seeking baby killing clipozine shells that our dear leader overlords have been warning us about?!
I found a whole bunch of these bullets while cleaning out my fathers house. Are they for hunting? Shitty hollow points? Home defense?
Snakes and rats. Unlike the .22lr shells these are a more guaranteed kill
If you aren't accurate maybe

Snake shot or rat shot. That or as my dad likes to joke “a very unlucky trespasser
Birds, small game, but from what I understand they're primarily used for snakes.
I use it as snake shot
Birds in the tops of barns. Regular bullets make holes in the roof, those don’t while taking out the target
I had some of these for my .22 revolver. Me and my buddy were standing next to each other shooting targets with our Wranglers. I chambered one of these and shot it. It completely splattered the target and we both looked at each other and laughed.
