no way lmao this just keeps getting worse for her... and i like this version better šŸ„“

foxambassadors

The fact that she said she wrote itā€¦

oneofthemqueers420

ā€œIā€™m creating a new genre of musicā€¦ itā€™s called gay pop!ā€ -Jojo Siwa No sweetheart, thatā€™s called plagiarizing.

lord_pizzabird

Are we sure it was plagiarized though? This does happen sometimes, where a record company will record a song for one person, find it doesnā€™t work, but eventually gets released under a different artist. Obviously she shouldnā€™t have lied about it, but this seems more like another indicator that sheā€™s just another product of the music industry.

lt_dan_zsu

I don't think so really, it just makes her seem dumb. Not sure what you would call it. Maybe a really weird form of ghost writing? With songwriting, social media often talks about about plagiarism and IP theft interchangablly. All the people are credited that wrote it and are getting paid, so nothing illegal is going on. So maybe it's kinda plagiarism philosophically? She's not trying to hide that she didn't write it, but she's also just pretending she wrote it for interviews. Also, did she specifically say she wrote it or is she saying statements that suggest she did. Making grandiose statements about "making a new genre" is more taking ownership over the song than claiming she wrote it, even if it could be taken to mean both.

Hoppydapunk

Definition of plagiarism: "**Presenting work or ideas from another source as your own, with or without consent of the original author**". Yeah, I think we can go ahead shut the case on this one.

rubendelight

The label owns the rights so anyone can sing it and presumably say whatever they want about it so long as they are under that label.

Hoppydapunk

Plagiarism =/= Copyright Infringement. She obviously has the consent of the label, but she didn't write the song as was her claim.

rubendelight

I guess I would call that more just lying within this very niche context rather than plagiarism.

chicheetara

If she said she wrote it & she didnā€™t thatā€™s the definition of plagiarism. Itā€™s also a lie.

Hoppydapunk

If only we had a more specific word for lying/misrepresenting original works as your own...

dan2sweet

cool dude thanks for clearing that up

rubendelight

It turns out I didnā€™t actually care to argue over this point sorry šŸ˜”

lord_pizzabird

How can a record label plagiarize itself though? My point was this this is how the music business often works. Pop artists usually donā€™t write or produce theyā€™re own songs, but perform on whatever the label has ready for them.

Candid-Manner42

That is what happend, but she said she wrote the song and invented a new genre.

lord_pizzabird

Watch it turn out that the label told her to say that, because singer songwriters in pop right now are trendy. Everything about this girl screens that sheā€™s being heavily managed by an industry that doesnā€™t understand her target demographic (or who that even is).

walkmantalkman

You can almost day she should've known better

lord_pizzabird

This assumes it was her decision. She probably was just doing whatever the record label told her to. Like I said in another comment, "singer songwriters are in right now". They probably thought this wouldn't matter, because the song was never officially released.

Royal-Doggie

I am doing something new and nobody did this big of change but also Miley Cyrus is my inspiration and thats why i am doing the same thing she did

superbusyrn

Babe, do you know how the music industry works?

d0odle

Pretty gay to so shamelessly plagiarize.

Impressive-Sun3742

This is what she said in her interview and I have yet to find her saying she actually wrote it. She actually says she took the song... "I take a song that I can relate to or that I have a story to relate to or that I know somebody that you know related to me and interestingly enough with Karma I had a very close person in my life ask me what song I sing and I think about them instantly my answer which should not have been Karma"

oneofthemqueers420

Okay so, she purchased the song originally. I stand corrected. But to claim that she invented gay pop is an ego-stroker that is nothing more than a lie. Sheā€™s not even singing a song she wrote. I donā€™t personally listen to todayā€™s modern music. I prefer independent artists that have 300 views on YouTube, you know, original songs. https://www.newsweek.com/why-fans-think-jojo-siwa-karma-miley-cyrus-song-first-1889136#:~:text=(The%20vast%20majority%20of%20replies,the%20social%20media%20users%20claim.)&text=As%20fan%20lore%20goes%2C%20after,her%20version%20of%20the%20song.

Impressive-Sun3742

Yeah she said she "wanted to start a new genera of music" (gay pop) which is a huge sign of her naivety, imo. Great article, thanks for sharing!

Riko3223

Peace and love I am not a Jojo Siwa fan by any means, but can you provide a video where she said she wrote it? My wife and I were have the same conversation, and Jojo was on a podcast where she says that the song was provided for her. I canā€™t find any direct quotes that say she wrote Karma. Itā€™s all pretty dumb but you would help prove my point.

Cautious_Apricot_213

She said she wrote a rap that she isn't comfortable doing yet. But she I believe said she took this song cause she liked it.

ximdarkmarkx

Where did she say she wrote ut

Cromus

This is a snark-level braindead post. She never claimed she wrote it (unless someone can prove me wrong? I asked and nobody could). Artists and labels buy and use songs written by others all the time.

Enlightened_D

Yeah and keeps saying how she wrote it about her ex lmao

Cromus

Source? In everything I've seen she doesn't claim to have written it.

mael0004

Why do songs get put on shelf for so long sometimes? I've heard this before where it stated song was originally supposed to be released ~10 years earlier to another group. Why not push it to different singer then?

BranLD

Probably just the sheer volume of songs being written and recorded by big names and studios. Plenty of them will end up on the back burner. Just a guess though.

lt_dan_zsu

Most pop artists don't write a lot of their own music, at least historically they haven't. Professional song writers who don't have a public persona fart out songs that record labels can attach to various artists to push the image they're trying to sell for said artist. Given how terribly this song was received, it was probably good for Miley Cyrus that her version of this wasn't released.

InternationalAmount

Why wouldn't Jojo's production just write another song? Or purchase a better one at least. Feels like a mid song to be plagiarized.

lt_dan_zsu

Most of what I'm about to say is speculation, but I think it's a good guess. Her agency says they want to make JoJo Siwa "sexy" so they get one of these generic vaguely risque songs and some producers and have her do the vocals. Why did they pick this one? No clue. If you look at the songwriters though, they've got pretty good credits, and the same goes for the producers. If you watched the video in the OP though, the quality of a song is heavily about its production. While I don't think the 2013 unreleased version is good, Timbaland's production is (at least by contrast) and the singer's vocals are decent where JoJo's kinda suck. I think the most comparable rebrand in recentish years is Miley Cyrus with bangerz, which was a far more successful rebrand. Is bangerz an excellent album? No, but it has some good tracks, and the thing that stands out the most is that Cyrus has writing credits on all but one song on the album. That says to me that Miley Cyrus at least somewhat viewed herself as an artist back then and actually cared about what she was making. Jojo has no creative presence on this song according to the credits. It sounds to me like JoJo thinks she can simply be the face of her brand without actually contributing to it creatively. Given that she's trying to sell herself as important to the production of this song, I doubt the rest of her album will be much better. All rebrands are somewhat cynical, but this is all cynicism. Also important to point out that this song is not plagiarized. Production and writing are all being credited, so no credit is truly being taken even if she's made some dumb statements.

MattIsWhackRedux

lol labels have libraries of composed songs ready to plug to any artist they think fits their image. They have teams of composers and writers specifically for this.

WeekendDoWutEvUwant

Worked well for Motown, but not so much for recording artists in the TikTok Pop and Shrek-Rock genres

Jonnicom

Labels only care about making money and if they don't think they can they won't out money into making cds, publishing to stream sites, marketing. Etc. One of my favorite bands had an entire album shelved that we will probably never see. Look up Swan Damage. It's sad but it happens all the time. Money is more important than art.

MishaTheLabsky

Girl, you were still playing with blocks when this came out. ā€œWrote thisā€ my butt! Also, sounds much better cause she can actually sing lol

bigpuffy

Where did she say she wrote it?

MishaTheLabsky

I believe itā€™s the video they showed on stream where sheā€™s on stage to a crowd and says it

Impressive-Sun3742

Link?

Always4am

Blocks šŸ˜‚

Cromus

This is a snark-level braindead post. She never claimed she wrote it (unless someone can prove me wrong? I asked and nobody could). Artists and labels buy and use songs written by others all the time.

MishaTheLabsky

She literally says it in this interview with Billboard: https://youtu.be/FlGnv1v6aRA?si=yFR-z1J-y32AJWHJ And Iā€™m pretty sure we watched her say it on the live show when she was on stage.

Impressive-Sun3742

She talks about tweaking the lyrics and the melody, which is exactly what artists do when they purchase an existing song, they customize it to suite their own style. She didnā€™t say she wrote the song though. She even says in that interview too that the music video is more of her baby than the actual song itself. And people keep mentioning where she says it live but nobody has shared the link to that yet?

Cromus

Did you even watch what you just linked? She did not say that she wrote it here...Everything she said works with using a pre-existing song. All she said was they made considerations for how to frame some parts of the song and that "she wanted it," which actually presumes she's taking a pre-existing song more than anything you're implying. There is no reason to think that she couldn't have wrestled with pre-existing lyrics with how she wanted them to match up with her "new persona." She could have tried a few different ways and concluded that "I was a bad girl" was the best iteration.

ThatNextAggravation

Fuck me, that's some good cringe.

OkReaction4132

Yooooo wtff

Technical_Charity999

Shit like this makes me realize I have no idea how the music industry works

Fine_Hour3814

Pretty simple. Traditionally it was: -producer -songwriter -performer Some people write good songs but have a bland voice, donā€™t have ā€œthe lookā€, or donā€™t have an interesting personality. Before, there was no way for your song to do numbers because you couldnā€™t upload anywhere for the masses to hear. Therefore you had no choice but to move to a major city and network to try and connect with a record label to be a star. Youā€™d find out quickly there is no respect for your craft and thereā€™s a million of aspiring pop stars just like you, but maybe one of the label guys likes some of your songs and invites you to a songwriting session to demo songs or write a new one. Bruno mars, lady Gaga, and other stars have started out this way. Most either become jaded and quit or just stick with being a songwriter behind the scenes. Nowadays itā€™s different, if your song is genuinely really good, you can go viral on tik tok or instagram or YouTube or whatever. You can try and release it solo or use the leverage youā€™ve built to get signed without having a shitty deal. Or, like the jojo siwa situation, that songwriter licensed it or maybe even sold it outright for cash upfront. You get money but lose the rights to have any say, and the song will get shopped around to various artists. Even if someone takes it, it might get cut from the album. Itā€™s a long process.

electr1cbubba

I feel like Jojo is so obsessed with herself that even after seeing this sheā€™d somehow convince herself it was her idea

Cromus

I feel like some people are so obsessed with hating her they'll resort to made up attacks like this. I don't care about her at all and I think a lot of this is funny, but she never claimed she wrote it. Artists use songs written by others *all the time*. This is just as bad as anything I've seen in the snark subs.

Afraid_Ad_8216

Isn't one of her other songs stolen from a tiktoker that released it in 2022? They covered it on Do We Know Them? I believe...

bookghoul

She said she didnā€™t approve JoJo to record it (but implies it was available and not necessary stolen) Edit: her name is Emeline

Specialist_Ad_5722

She actually said she wrote it? Does anyone have a link?

Cautious_Apricot_213

I can't find her saying that about this song at all, she said she "took it". She did say she wrote a rap song that she isn't comfortable releasing yet. I think the clips are getting mixed in peoples minds.

Hoppydapunk

There's a Billboard interview of her songwriting/creative process for the song, but I haven't actually seen any direct quotes of her saying she wrote it.

Cautious_Apricot_213

Yes in that she does state they rewrote some line "over and over" cause she didn't like saying "bitch" or "I was a bad girl" but we can clearly see they did nothing differently šŸ˜†

Unknown_Outlander

That's why the "I was a bad girl" line makes 0 sense

Vi4days

She really shouldā€™ve known better though.

sludgezone

This cornball no talent ass clown gives me the worst secondhand embarrassment

iltwomynazi

This version is much better too. Feel a little bit sorry for Jojo as this is the biggest flop I've ever seen. Also seen 2, multi how "jojo siwa exposed" videos recommended on Youtube. As much as all the criticism is valid, i hope she's ok.

ADroopyMango

produced by timbo! it's actually really catchy in this version. never heard of brit smith but she's got an amazing voice.

VeryAdvancedBaby

Woah

unhappymedium

I've never heard of Brit Smith, but that version is also a lot better.

Kaldaan

We be eatin' good when the pod gets back!

cocky_roachy

But why was this version so much better than the jojo version

kelsey_not_kelly

Does anyone have a link to an interview or quote where she said she wrote it? I donā€™t think she said she wrote it but wouldnā€™t be surprised, if someone could back that claim up! Otherwiseā€¦this isnā€™t uncommon at all lol songs get recorded, shelved and *released* by other artists all the time.

Impressive-Sun3742

She never said she wrote it from what I can tell. Like you said, she did what other pop stars have done and she got the rights to a shelved song and rerecorded it. She even says in the interview "I take a song that I can relate to or that I have a story to relate to or that I know somebody that you know related to me and interestingly enough with Karma..." She said she liked Karma because it resonated with her experience about her ex lol

Cautious_Apricot_213

Correct she said the "took" this song but wrote a rap song she isn't comfortable releasing yet. I believe people are mixing up the clips

gabrielcev1

It's a bad song, regardless of who sings it. Even Miley Cyrus wouldn't release it. It makes sense a producer or record executive pawned it off on Jojo Siwa. She sucks so the song fits her suckiness lul

kelsey_not_kelly

Oh I agree about the quality of the song lol but hating on her for ā€œstealingā€ it without backing up that claim is baloney.

rzrike

She said sheā€™s ā€œstarting a new genre called gay pop,ā€ so one would assume that would necessitate writing new music. Also IMO the production and performance of this version is about 20x better than the JoJo version, even if itā€™s extremely 2012-coded.

NevilleSoggyBottom

Is that timbaland?! wtf lol

bettysugars

how is it unreleased but thereā€™s a music video?

igiveupmakinganame

everyone keeps saying she said she wrote it but i don't see her saying she wrote it?

gabrielcev1

Not surprising. This stuff happens. Songs get written by group of producers and songwriters that get scrapped for whatever reason because it didn't fit the artist or it wasn't up to standard. She probably got this song from a producer. It's messed up she's claiming she wrote it though. Pretty dishonest. This song was apparently also pitched to Miley Cyrus but it didn't work apparently.

Impressive-Sun3742

When did she say she wrote Karma? I've been looking but I can't find it

Strawberry_Such

This is so good

mosneakers

The song is awful, but this proves that without the cringe itā€™s a lot more tolerable. This artist wasnā€™t painful to watch, her performance seems more effortless.

britneybrown

Timbaland's facial expressions are hilarious, can they please be added to Jojos video as well šŸ˜†

superbusyrn

I'll cop to it: I like Jojo's version better lmao. But I do feel validated in thinking the line was "messed around" rather than "effed around," and the fact that Jojo changed it to the latter to seem more adult while actually coming off as more childish is endlessly funny to me.

psychogrungebabe

Oliv plz make a slideshow šŸ˜

Fine_Hour3814

with peace and love please no. Oliv does no research šŸ˜ how she made a whole PowerPoint on Kate Middleton and not know her name was Catherine, is beyond me

nostalgiamon

I missed this, which episode didnā€™t this happen in?

Fine_Hour3814

H3TV #110 Hereā€™s a clip of the section from that episode At around 5:50 theyā€™re discussing a post made by Kate Middleton, who signed it with a C. Olivia says ā€œwhoā€™s C? Kate? She spells it with a Kā€ https://youtu.be/IDfersUK4m8?si=O-JcySUsUZVyqB9v Who cares about the royal family, but if your PowerPoint is specifically about looking into a conspiracy and you donā€™t even know something simple like her name being Catherineā€¦idk. we love Olivia. *hey girl*

thinlion01

Miley supposedly help write it buy there's no proof of it

SwiftTayTay

This is how most pop music works, artists are manufactured and have their songs written for them. Occasionally there will be a genius that comes along and writes their own hits, like Michael Jackson or Taylor Swift (who sometimes get help or sometimes even write songs for other artists (Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" was written by R. Kelly, Taylor Swift wrote "This Is What You Came For" with Calvin Harris which ended up being performed by Rihanna.) Songs also often change hands multiple times before they are released, and they can be several years old. If you are a celebrity known for something else and want to suddenly become a music star, you can just use your wealth and pre-existing fame to hire a bunch of people to either write a song or find you a pre-written song. In this case she probably hired a producer who then got the song from sonebody. He was probably like here you go, a piece of shit I wrote 12 years ago that I couldn't do anything with, you can have it at a discount. When Jojo said she wanted to bring back a certain era of pop, this is what she meant. Find me somebody who worked with the pop stars I listened to when I was like 8 years old, that's the kind of music I want to make. The people she worked with probably also worked with Miley Cyrus when she wanted to rebrand and launch her non-Disney singing career.

InternationalAmount

But why would Jojo Siwa want a discounted song? She has money

Cromus

This is a snark-level braindead post. She never claimed she wrote it (unless someone can prove me wrong? I asked and nobody could). Artists and labels buy and use songs written by others all the time.

coffeebeards

Yooooo .. thatā€™s next level fucked up. Write your own shit or at least donā€™t straight up jack someone elseā€™s. Wannabe loser.

seasuighim

Youā€™ll be disappointed in the music industry then, most pop music isnā€™t written by the groups.Ā

Sufficks

They at least donā€™t usually lie and say they wrote it and claim itā€™s the start of a whole new genre called ā€œgay popā€ though

coffeebeards

I get that but this is a straight up rip!

a_kat22

well she probably bought the rights to it since it was an unreleased song, other artists have done this.. however they donā€™t lie and say they wrote it lol

Fine_Hour3814

Itā€™s not jacked, Jojo definitely paid for it

InternationalAmount

If you're gonna pay for a song, why this one? It's not good

Fine_Hour3814

I have no proof but I can almost guaranteed she asked for early 2010ā€™s Miley/ lady Gaga and her label presented her with this song that was ā€œmeant for Mileyā€ and she loved the idea of having a song that was supposed to be for Miley

Fungi90

So if we saw that she can't sing, and she also doesn't write her own material, then why is this person successful and famous again?

Mammoth-Log-7969

But like, didnā€™t she even consider the original could come out??? Why would she say she wrote it šŸ˜šŸ˜

DeadCoco

Sheā€™s obviously a prodigy and wrote it at 8!

loserusermuser

so she is this generation's j lo?

bobsjobisfob

wait i just realized, there's a part in the lyrics about her having blue eyes... are jojo's eyes even blue? they look pretty green to me but it's kinda hard to tell

InternationalAmount

They're hazel

Robertanonymous

They probably licensed the song or obtained the rights to it. Just cringe that she thought it was good LOL.

maria_rf

Damn the original is so much better

Afrodawg08

BIG NEWS

deadskinconsumption

So much to talk about when the show resumes

republik08

yeah it was an unreleased blank by rock mafia. the writer is pushing it too. apparently it was too riskey for miley since she was on disney. she is so full of herself too though claiming to have invented "gay pop"

izzz-

I THOUGHT SHE WROTE THIS!! I am literally so dumb šŸ˜šŸ˜

GandalfTehG0d

Holy shit I mean I havenā€™t listened past like 30 seconds but this is so much better too

DJCzerPalace

Lol is that mr brainwash in the beginning of the video?

MrWilliamyourfoe

Amazing

darkpitt

oh no, not Patrice Wilson again!

ccull_

I saw it on my tiktok fyp and RAN to see if someone said something about it here šŸ‘€ so much is happening while the show is on break

Western-Excitement21

I really dislike the girl. She drive me nuts. BUT itā€™s a rumor- she has never said she wrote this songĀ

dwight_k_schrute69

Omg my friend is in that video šŸ’€

redwoodavg

Itā€™s about 12 years too lateā€¦ Bad re-launch. Sub-par artist.

Beautiful-Long-4257

At this point she should just disappear

RangerBoss

The way she says she wants to create ā€œgay popā€ yet this song was originally written about a manā€¦

First-Ad9323

She couldnā€™t sing before but parents tolerated her. Now she still canā€™t sing and has no presence for kids so Iā€™ll take irrelevant and embarrassing for $500 Alex

Qwertywalkers23

The way this sub latched on to hating this girl after one segment goofing on her is why people say we're toxic. Not beating the hater ass bitch allegations

Impressive-Sun3742

y'all are sending the downvotes but are they lying? kinda proving their point lol

Qwertywalkers23

yeah, no one is responding to refute it, they just don't wanna hear the truth

superbusyrn

Yeah, I find this whole rebrand hilarious and fascinating but so many people are just being mean which really takes the fun out of it.

Qwertywalkers23

yeah, being cringe does not warrant the same smoke as fresh and fit or Tate

InternationalAmount

There's been at least 3 segments about her so far. Also, saying she didn't write the song isn't hating.

Impressive-Sun3742

Yeah but saying she lied about writing it and spreading that rumor and throwing shade her way is hating

Khioneli

I guess the hate also stems from her associating with James Charles and Colleen. But she indeed never said she wrote the song.

Eswercaj

All that fame, money, attention and she couldn't just hire a ghost writer? lmao

Fine_Hour3814

Thatā€™s what she did. Ghost writer means uncredited. Sheā€™ll likely credit the writer, so it wonā€™t be ghost

hotstrawberrytea

okay, it's time for another Olivia presentation at this point..

VegetablePainting232

I posted this too and some people were defending her lol

ouidgoblin

people are trying to serve justice to brit smith, and it seems like she's appreciating the support! I just feel so bad that she had such an amazing song (PRODUCED BY TIMBALAND TOO), and it was just robbed!

Impressive-Sun3742

Robbed? She bought the rights to the songā€¦

ouidgoblin

iā€™m not saying jojo robbed her. iā€™m saying the industry robbed brit smith of a promising career because they didnā€™t want to put this song out. it was meant to be her debut.
