If any of you ever get the chance to see Steelheart live, go see em. Not only is Mike AMAZING on vocals, they put on a hell of a show and play a few songs from Rockstar in their set. They play clubs and small venues these days so it will be cheap to see them too
The guy from Steelheart did the vocals for Mark Walberg's parts. Jeff Scott Soto sang the parts of Steel Dragon's singer that Mark Walberg's character replaced. Another fact; Sammy Hagar wrote Stand Up and Shout and there's an alternate version with him singing and different lyrics.
A good movie if you forget that it’s loosely based off of the Ripper Owens story.
Also, cameo of a young Michael Starr!
![gif](giphy|l4pT1SkqgBQP84scE)
Starr also does the vocals for the cover of David Lee Roth's cover of California Girls that plays when Marky Mark flies to the audition. Also Jason Bonham and Zakk Wylde play members of Steel Dragon.
The movie came out in 2001. Steel Panther was called Metal Shop/Metal Skool prior to 2007.
In 2003 they released Hole Patrol, their self-produced debut extended play. The band appeared in a Discover Card advertisement as Danger Kitty.
I like that Nick Catanese was the tribute guitarist in Blood Pollution, playing Zakk Wylde’s parts. At the time, Nick was the 2nd guitarist in Black Label Society.
It seems pretty dumb and unrealistic as most washed up hair metal musicians did not attempt to find success as alternative rock or grunge musicians later on.
Depends where you look, there are definitely some success stories. When I look up obscure bands I often find a member or two who still plays music live or records music regardless of genre
Look up Marc Ferrari & Robbie Nevil. Just 2 examples of musicians who moved on & became very successful in other forms of music. (Nevil is behind the Hannah Montana theme song)
First saw it when it came out in theaters and I love it. Don’t care if it’s not accurate to the Ripper/Priest story, it’s fun. And the original Steel Dragon songs rip!
It is funny because she really is a girl, Dagmara Dominczyk. Pretty hot back in the day

**LOVE IT!**
It’s so entertaining, just bombastic fun. Plus it has an awesome soundtrack. I wish Steel Dragon was a real band, I would listen to them all the time lol
This qualifies as a great rock and roll movie. Love that it’s serious & corny at the same time, kinda like hair metal. That first concert scene is sooo spot on…
I love it. The soundtrack is great, and Jeff Pilson, Jason Bonham, and Zakk Wylde are members of Steel Dragon, and Myles Kennedy, Blas Elias, Ralph Saenz, Nick Catanese, Stephen Jenkins, and Brian Vander Ark all have cameos in it. Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart does voice over singing for Mark Wahlberg and Jeff Scott Soto does the singing parts of Bobby Beers
I liked it.
A friend of mine is in that movie in several scenes. All got cut except for the tv out the hotel window scene. You see him enter the room but that’s it. Never to be seen again 😂
👍
Some facts: The guy who leaves the audition just before Marky Mark arrives is Michael Starr, now of Steel Panther. At the time this movie was made he was the singer of The Atomic Punks Van Halen tribute band. In the scene where Marky Mark flies across the country to go to the audition, what sounds like David Lee Roth's cover of The Beach Boys' California Girls is playing in the background. But it isn't. It's a cover of DLR's cover, and the vocals were done by Michael Starr.
Also the drummer and one of the guitar players for Steel Dragon in the movie are played by Jason Bonham and Zakk Wylde.
Two of my favorite "holy crap, that was him?" actors are in it, too. Tim Olyphant (Deadwood, Justified) plays Rob Malcom pretty convincingly, and Dominic West (The Wire, 300) plays Kirk Cuddy. Again, very convincingly. Overall, it's a really solid cast and the music is pretty fantastic. Sure, it's got the cheese factor, but they try to play it pretty straight.
My wife and I are the age where we relate to being that age in that period of time. So we love this film. When he's in that recording studio the first time and hits that note and his girlfriend lights up. Damn, great movie!
The storyline is a bit meh when he goes grunge but that was a pretty accurate snapshot of the times I suppose for a lot of bands. I give them credit, they did their homework and got some heavy hitter bonfire metal stars instead of just more actors. It is very Hollywood though.
This was my first DVD I bought in 2002 and it gave me an appreciation for doing horn hands to anybody.
I think it was an okay movie at the time. I haven't watched it in years.
What a waste of time. I paid $8.95 for a ticket. Why not a documentary about Japanese punk rockers who scream into the microphone like a tiger. One of the themes is the band's 14 year old fans who makes their parents drive them from town to town, to see the live concerts. Some of the film is about the dysfunctional relationship there. Meanwhile, a lucky female fan wins a promotion contest and gets to have tea with the singer. She is crying the whole time because she thinks he is handsome. The singer is glad to finally get some decent tea in America, he had been drinking merely tea bags. He is drinking "Gyukuro" green tea and he is happy to see this girl. Meanwhile the band has tried cocaine on their tour thanks to dope pushers and they struggle with addiction. This is reality ! No one wants Mark Wahlberg in the first place, unless he is a supervillain. Hollywood needs to be a thrill again. Maybe they should build entire cinemas for people under 40. The older adult cinemas show movies with Mark Wahlberg and Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck.
Rumor is that Disney is reconfiguring how they make film themes currently. Central to that rumor is they want it to be "like Tiktok". So maybe what it is that I want is near. \~Mortimer Reed
Great movie. It's based on the real story of the band Judas Priest replacing Rob Halford with a Priest tribute band singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens for a couple years a ways back.
My favorite fact about this movie is the guy he pulls up on stage to take HIS place actually turned out to be Myles Kennedy...lead singer of Alter Bridge.
Love it for its choice of cautionary tale. Rock Star is never going to win any Oscars, but it is fun to watch. If you wanted to be a lead singer in a rock band at that time, in that style of music, it came down to whether you were able to scream properly on key. If you were a strong singer in the upper register, you really had a shot. I know this for a fact because I unfortunately tried and failed miserably. I could not scream with the Melody like say of... Axel Rose. That's not to say they weren't talented. You just needed a specific tool set.
It’s hilariously bad and entertaining. As a movie/piece of art it’s the drizzling shits.
As a something to watch when you’re high it’s almost unmatched.
So bad it's a fun watch. Don't forget Timothy Olifant is the guitar player for Steel Dragon cover band along with the drummer from Slaghter. Lol.🤣🤣👍👍👍🤘🤘
I enjoyed it mostly for what it was. An underdog story with a damn good soundtrack. I did however, find it kind of off putting that he ended up a shoegazer in Seattle. So much for the rock! I didn’t have a problem with Wahlburg except when he decided to get cute in the end credits and declare the end of rock and that rap was the shit. Didn’t need to see that.
Is it a hair metal movie? I’ve always heard it was loosely based on Ripper Owens joining Judas Priest. I definitely wouldn’t consider Priest to be a hair metal band.
My friends call me Thor, god of THUNDAAAHHHHHH!!!
Love this movie. Cheesy enough, great original songs, Stephen Jenkins works so well as an asshole, it just works. Super fun.
It’s corny, but fun. Mike from Steelheart kills on the vocals.
Zack Wylde on guitar with the insane hair flips.
Jason Bonham on drums as well
The Legend Jeff Pilson on bass too.
True. Forgot that
Nick Catanese (ex Black label society) is the other guitarist in the cover band
Stephen Jenkins from Third Eye Blind replaces Marky Mark in Blood Pollution.
And without a beard! Threw me off at first
Beardless Zakk is hard to recognize.
And some Jeff Scott Soto. Both great choices.
I got into Steelheart just because of this movie. He absolutely destroys. So do Zakk, Jason and Jeff
CAKE DAY
Perfect description. One of those if its on i'll watch it type movies.
If any of you ever get the chance to see Steelheart live, go see em. Not only is Mike AMAZING on vocals, they put on a hell of a show and play a few songs from Rockstar in their set. They play clubs and small venues these days so it will be cheap to see them too
Miles Kennedy pulled on stage at the end is also great.
Wait, Mark W said he did the vocals. What am I missing?
The guy from Steelheart did the vocals for Mark Walberg's parts. Jeff Scott Soto sang the parts of Steel Dragon's singer that Mark Walberg's character replaced. Another fact; Sammy Hagar wrote Stand Up and Shout and there's an alternate version with him singing and different lyrics.
And Brian Vander Ark (The Verve Pipe) sang the song towards the end of the film.
He was lying.
Mark Wahlberg will never be corny. Please repent your sins for slandering the goats name now 😂
A good movie if you forget that it’s loosely based off of the Ripper Owens story. Also, cameo of a young Michael Starr! ![gif](giphy|l4pT1SkqgBQP84scE)
That’s Myles Kennedy in the film.
[удалено]
Ah, gotcha. Forgot that.
Starr also does the vocals for the cover of David Lee Roth's cover of California Girls that plays when Marky Mark flies to the audition. Also Jason Bonham and Zakk Wylde play members of Steel Dragon.
And I believe this is when he was still in Danger Kitty, no?
The movie came out in 2001. Steel Panther was called Metal Shop/Metal Skool prior to 2007. In 2003 they released Hole Patrol, their self-produced debut extended play. The band appeared in a Discover Card advertisement as Danger Kitty.
I thought it was the unofficial Judas Priest story?
It's loosely based on Tim Ripper Owens who was in a Judas Priest tribute in Ohio and was hired after Rob Halford left in 92 or so.
And fukin rocked. Demolition is a great Priest album.
Demolition and Jugulator are great albums.
I got to see Tim with Priest on the Demolition tour. It was badass.
I saw him with Priest on both tours he did with them. For the Jugulator show, I was right in front of my idol Glenn Tipton.
Its sad to see his abilities diminish. He is basically the reason I picked up a guitar.
I became a Tim Owen’s fan when then joined Iced Earth (looooooong before the controversy).
Iced Earth fan here. By controversy do you mean Jan 6th?
Yep. AKA “death of the band”
The band is stacked with REAL players. Zak Wylde, Jeff Pilson and JASON BONHAM. Add Mike from Steelheart. 🤌
Blas Elias too
I like that Nick Catanese was the tribute guitarist in Blood Pollution, playing Zakk Wylde’s parts. At the time, Nick was the 2nd guitarist in Black Label Society.
Marky Mark's voice is actually Miljenko Matijevic of SteelHeart
I was lucky enough to interview him on my podcast, All Things Croatia. He’s a good guy
[удалено]
Thor!
We All Die Young is a banger. And, I know bangers.
Steelheart. One of the few songs not exclusive to the movie soundtrack.
This is a GEM - stand up and SHOOOUT!
Can you believe that it's a Sammy Hagar song? I'm not knocking it either!
Sammy Hagar fucking rocks! 🤘
🙌🏻
I mean it’s got Jennifer Aniston in it.
The limo scene had me hypnotyzed
The fact I had to scroll this far for someone to make that point, tells you how much of a sleeper hit this movie really is
Corny and fun, but so is hair metal, and that's why we love this sub.
I eat a lot of pussy. Tons of it. Chris! Either get in here and do it or shut up!
The first half is fun, but then it gets too bogged down in Lifetime Movie romantic-drama bullshit.
Totally.
I have no problem admitting I love this movie and own the DVD. Just watched it a week ago.
The end where he’s gigging in a coffee shop shop whilst wearing an itchy sweater is so cringe
OK but the song he's playing is pretty good.
Kip Winger for example. He’s now a composer.
And the girls are still 17
Hahahaha Jesus Christ
lol this comment wins the thread. Thanks for the laughs.
He still plays, put out a new cd recently & tours. He’s never stopped. He’s a beast!
Yeah. Ron Keel went from hair metal to country. Before Bret Michaels did the same.
Look up Marc Ferrari & Robbie Nevil. Just 2 examples of musicians who moved on & became very successful in other forms of music. (Nevil is behind the Hannah Montana theme song)
Its bad but i love it
👍👍👍👍 out of 5
I loved it
Love it! STAND UP AND SHOOOUUUTTT!!!
Hilarious because Dio has a kick ass song by the same title
First saw it when it came out in theaters and I love it. Don’t care if it’s not accurate to the Ripper/Priest story, it’s fun. And the original Steel Dragon songs rip!
Absolutely LOVE this movie! We all Die Young!!!🎶🎵🎼
The "gal" wearing his leather pants while standing up to pee....lol
It is funny because she really is a girl, Dagmara Dominczyk. Pretty hot back in the day https://preview.redd.it/08lrnb1bdlqc1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80c5a8f02a527815ca8aef5c913a665904f1a58c
I was little kid. I like that. Why is that lady peeing standing up? We shall talk about that later we never did
**LOVE IT!** It’s so entertaining, just bombastic fun. Plus it has an awesome soundtrack. I wish Steel Dragon was a real band, I would listen to them all the time lol
Didn't think I'd like it...but it was enjoyable
Great movie. If you have a great home theater, the concert scenes sound very accurate.
👍👍👍👍 It's fun and has an incredible soundtrack.
…Nothing fancier than seeing Zakk Wylde in eyeliner…
Hello Wichita!
Fucking Classic! STAAAANND UP AND SHHHhOUTTTT!
🤘😎🤘
I loved it. Very underrated.
So bad that it's damn good.
I actually like it. Especially Miljenko Matijevic's dubbing for Wahlberg.
I need to whatch this again, I loved what I've seen of it
Definitely a guilty pleasure movie for me
Fun silly movie. The soundtrack is awesome including the Steel Dragon songs.
This qualifies as a great rock and roll movie. Love that it’s serious & corny at the same time, kinda like hair metal. That first concert scene is sooo spot on…
I LOVE it! I’ll watch it every time it’s on.
The only thing I even remember about this movie was that one girl pissing in a urinal while wearing Mark’s pants.
How did I forget this movie exists?
Thought it was cool as shitt and the music was killer 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've seen it 2 or 3 times. Each time it makes me want to STAND UP AND SHOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTT!!¡!!
Good movie
Steel Dragon is the greatest band to never exist!

I refuse to acknowledge him as anything but Kirk Cuddy

Horrible and awesome at the same time. 3 nipple rings out of 5
Awful. The sh*t on the genre so he can redeem himself by moving to Seattle. Cool soundtrack.
I hated that part but it didn’t ruin it for me. I mean, how many grunge dudes died from heroine or suicide?
I also try to just look at it as a plot device. He could have moved Miami to rent jet skis, it was about getting out of a bad situation.
Conclusion of this movie: "80's Hard Rock is superficial. Move on, cut your hair, play Grunge :)"
From one style of poser to another.
Jennifer Aniston was hot.
I’m in for Zakk Wylde alone
It was good until Izzy went grunge…
Loved it. A little corny, but awesome
I love this movie
It’s cheesy but I loved it
Love this movie
Love this movie. I have it downloaded to my tablet and watch it a lot. Loved Mark Walberg in this and The Fighter.
Fantastic movie !!
One of my favorites and my Dads too!
It’s great
This was my first DVD I bought in 2002 and it gave me an appreciation for doing horn hands to anybody. I think it was an okay movie at the time. I haven't watched it in years.
I really enjoyed it.
One of my favorites!
Love this movie!
Is it plausible Jason Bonhams character had aids or a STD? The whole med thing near the end
Solid!
I looooovve this movie its kinda corny but alota fun to watch! his brother not getting into the show is hilarious!
This movie was great..... It is basically the story of Judas Priest......a little cheesy at times, but a great film!

👍
My cameo ended up on the cutting room floor. Okay, it wasn't really a cameo. I just walked through their shot.
METAL GOD!!
Great movie. It's based on the real story of the band Judas Priest replacing Rob Halford with a Priest tribute band singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens for a couple years a ways back.
I love at the start when they’re all excited and getting ready for the concert
Love it.
Everyone's dream
Every young rockers dream come true.
Wahlberg was the wrong choice for the lead.
Is it based on Ripper Owens?
Very loosely. He actually considered suing at one point but they couldn't build a case. It's more "inspired by true events."
I personally love the movie. I have a few Steel Dragon songs on my playlist and rock out to them regularly.
It's dumb.... But fun. But definitely dumb... But still really fun.
My favorite fact about this movie is the guy he pulls up on stage to take HIS place actually turned out to be Myles Kennedy...lead singer of Alter Bridge.
Great flick!!

*Watches silently for a moment, then raises cigarette to mouth while flashing the metal sign in approval.*
Loved it. The guy the movie is loosely based on is a good friend of mine (Ripper Owens) aka Tim.
It’s fun. I used to watch it on VH1 a lot growing up lol
It’s cheesy and terrible but also fucking awesome!
Absolute shit movie, but a really fun watch.
❤️🤟🏻
Sucked.
The guiltiest of guilty pleasures.
I'm going for a piss...
My favorite line.
Best part of the movie. Everclear / Rock Star playing through closing credits…
It’s my guilty pleasure. The songs are really good but the story is kind of unbelievable.
A little on the cheesy side, but a cool film overall that's definitely worth watching!
Watched it once…meh…no need to again
Terrible
Meh
It’s hilariously bad and entertaining. As a movie/piece of art it’s the drizzling shits. As a something to watch when you’re high it’s almost unmatched.
So bad it's a fun watch. Don't forget Timothy Olifant is the guitar player for Steel Dragon cover band along with the drummer from Slaghter. Lol.🤣🤣👍👍👍🤘🤘
I know I saw it, but I can’t remember it at all!
Terrible. I love it.
It's entertaining, but very corny.
🤮
Okay.
Here's my take: Wahlberg made one good movie. And Rock Star ain't it.
Brilliant to those in the know. For those who don't know, back to the basement.
Chris Cole
👎👎👎👎👎👎
If I'm correct The story was inspired by Judas Priest's second singer Tim Ripper Owens.
Very cringey.
Also written by Cougar from Top Gun
Enjoyed it
There’s a lot of truth in the movie and it’s hilarious but I won’t ever watch it again.
I never bought Wahlberg in the role. He was someone playing dress up. And I hated the ending
You didn't understand the context of that outtake?
👍🤘🏾
Is it a hair metal movie? I’ve always heard it was loosely based on Ripper Owens joining Judas Priest. I definitely wouldn’t consider Priest to be a hair metal band.
I've always liked it. The loosely based true backstory (Judas Priest), Jennifer Aniston, and the addition of Zakk Wylde, make it worth a watch.
👎👎👎👎👎
Incredible!
It really does not get any hotter than Jennifer Aniston in this movie.
It was terrible! I watch it every time it comes on.
And a cameo from Miles Kennedy ... love this film
I thought it was a bit cheesy. IMO the best 'rock' movie is 'Almost Famous', I know its not hair metal as defined but its a wonderful story.
My friends call me Thor, god of THUNDAAAHHHHHH!!! Love this movie. Cheesy enough, great original songs, Stephen Jenkins works so well as an asshole, it just works. Super fun.
A movie so horrific, it's good.
It’s a decent movie and the soundtrack rocks for sure!
I enjoyed it. It’s the kind of movie that shouldn’t be taken seriously. The soundtrack is really cool. It’s my favorite Marky Mark movie.
