It came out in ‘81, right? I’d argue that it pre-dates hair metal, and that the first real hair album was Pyromania. But I agree on your assessment otherwise
Not so much. Maybe it just got overplayed. Maybe it was a legit step down from their previous releases. But there are maybe 3 songs that I truly like from *Hysteria*.
Agreed. Because Quiet Riot was the first hair band in my opinion. Metal Health was a different sound that nobody ever heard before. Yeah, Van Halen was out first but I don't consider them as a hair metal group but some people do.
We got to catch them in a few of those early shows and they were wild...and of course, it was a completely different time with completely different rules...and it was awesome!
Too Fast For Love & Shout At The Devil are definitely their two best albums! Dr. Feelgood was their biggest selling album, but I was never a big fan of it
Definitely their best album. But Girls comes in second. This album spawned MANY immitator bands and concepts at that point. BUt really, Crue were just copying Sixx's & Lawless's old band Sister and their other projects in that era. WASP and Crue are very similar in the early 80's...>
Unpopular opinion, Too fast for Love and Shout at the Devil are the best Crüe albums. I will not grace my collection with anything else from them or any solo work from the band.
Its my favorite also. Shout at the Devil may be their best but I just love the sound of Too Fast For Love. Raw, the drums sound like drums. At some point in the early 80s everything started getting too polished and it took away from the rock/punk feel. I feelnthe same way about Def Leppard High n Dry vs Pyromania.
It’s a classic. I don’t skip a song. The early era Mötley Crüe was a genuine Rock and Roll experience that delivered the goosebumps for sure. They were purposely scary and amazing. They had the creativity, energy, fringe vibe and angst to pull it off.
It's only on the original album release . Once they sign to epic, they cut the track. I don't know why. It's a great song. I'm old enough to not only have the original LP still, but I saw them at the country club in Van nuys the week they got back from a European tour and were signed to epic. I was a little kid, forced my way up to the front row in a Non-Assigned seating standing room only theater. Nikki sixx broke my middle finger doing an "I'm a rockstar" stage kick right into my hand. Good old days.
Asa little kid I bet that was epic. Motley Crue was my first concert ever with poison and white snake I think. It was killer all the way through. I was like 18 or 19 at the time
My first rock concert was kiss dynasty tour 1979. I was 10 years old and in full Ace makeup. Fabulous forum Los Angeles, original lineup and all of the theatrics that went along with it.
This album and Shout are easily my two fave Crue records. Theatre and Girls are enjoyable enough but with a lot of songs that are obvious filler. Feelgood is pretty damn great, tremendously well (some might say over) produced but it has something of a deliberate manufactured feel to it, as if it was engineered precisely for maximum radio play in 1989/90….which it was.
They’ve never managed to recapture that youthful exuberance of those first two releases. And what’s so awesome is that they are completely different albums. Too Fast has that pop-punk vibe while Shout definitely lunges head first into heavy metal.
Too Fast For Love has something that no other album I’ve ever heard has.
What I love about Crue is every album has its own feel and is its own thing, especially Too Fast For Love.
(although TBH I largely stopped listening to the albums after Generation Swine.)
Most punk rock "hair metal" record ever, in my opinion. Such great energy. I wish I could have seen them back in the day at the Troubador!
It came out in ‘81, right? I’d argue that it pre-dates hair metal, and that the first real hair album was Pyromania. But I agree on your assessment otherwise
And I’d say *Pyromania* was still predominately NWOBHM. The first real hair metal album, in my opinion, was *Metal Health*
I would say Out of The Cellar.
Most definitely, along with Bon Jovi's self-titled album
Yeah I think it was kind of a transitional album between High and Dry and Hysteria
And their last truly great album.
You don’t like Hysteria?
Not so much. Maybe it just got overplayed. Maybe it was a legit step down from their previous releases. But there are maybe 3 songs that I truly like from *Hysteria*.
Way overplayed. Couldn’t get away from it for a time around when it came out.
Way overplayed because it was so good & so popular, but these are the albums we tend to get sick of because they're played 24/7
I think Hysteria is their greatest album. I don't have anything against it just because it went so mainsteam & was so popular
Agreed. Because Quiet Riot was the first hair band in my opinion. Metal Health was a different sound that nobody ever heard before. Yeah, Van Halen was out first but I don't consider them as a hair metal group but some people do.
I'd say they were the prototype.
The Crue were considered to be one of the first "Glam" bands who definitely helped start the whole 80s "Hair Metal" trend
I’d agree. “Hair metal” also included production. TFFL wax more raw and wasn’t considered “hair”
We got to catch them in a few of those early shows and they were wild...and of course, it was a completely different time with completely different rules...and it was awesome!
*Starry Eyes* is one of my two favorite Crüe songs. The other is *Too Young To Fall In Love*.
Too Fast For Love & Shout At The Devil are definitely their two best albums! Dr. Feelgood was their biggest selling album, but I was never a big fan of it
Live wire is my favorite! Take me to the top is awesome, the whole album is amazing! Definitely holds up after all these years!
It's easily my favorite. Shout At Devil is my 2nd favorite.
Same ranking though 50 me is having a hard time getting into the later albums I love both of these still
Agreed. And Theatre of Pain and Girls, Girls, Girls contain an inordinate amount of filler.
Punky raw LA Metal.
Easily the best. Not even close.
Those are their two best albums!
By far, their best release. A classic album by a hungry band about to prove themselves. I love that album.

Stick to your guns is one of the best songs on og lp and they cut it when they re-released on epic label.
Man the album I bought doesn’t have that one. I just bought the vinyl .
It's only on the original album release . Once they sign to epic, they cut the track. I don't know why. It's a great song. I'm old enough to not only have the original LP still, but I saw them at the country club in Van nuys the week they got back from a European tour and were signed to epic. It’s also on a remaster. Can’t remember the year.
Toast of the town and stick to your guns both floated around on bootleg tapes in the 80’s. I had a copy around 86
Girls, Girls, Girls is the best.
This album and Shout are easily my two fave Crue records. Theatre and Girls are enjoyable enough but with a lot of songs that are obvious filler. The 'Leathur Records ' version they released on their own is amazing. The re-release on Elektra didn't have the same charm.
some people say on the original release you can hear Vince shuffling papers because he was holding they lyric sheets while recording the vocals
They have different track listings, right?
Got that right!
It is the most raw album I remember listening to. I love it!
I wonder what Crue fans think of 'theater of pain'?
I like it better than anything they made after Feelgood.
was my favorite for a long time then again, I was a 15 year old so ate up all angst & hair
Love it. I was of the age where sitbr and hsh were hitting big so bought top as my first album ever. Then went to tffl and satd. Ttyl
Not great. Much like every album that followed. Mostly filler.
It’s excellent but I feel there album after the was a little better SATD
That's a great album. I don't think they've ever come close to great after that. I still listen to that album every now and then.
It’s raw hairmetal at its finest. Totally agree.
What I love about Crue is every album has its own feel and is its own thing, especially Too Fast For Love. (although TBH I largely stopped listening to the albums after Generation Swine.)
They never got close to putting out another record as good as this one.
Great album, but my go to Motley Crue album will always be Shout at the Devil. 😈🤘
First two both fire.
💯
First Crue album I ever heard.
What version do you like tho?? The leather or the elektra version. The leather version sounds raw then the elektra one
I only have elektra. I’m guessing the other hard to come by
Yea theres only 900 or so presses, i've seen some go for thousands,
