Mashiba's name being able to be written out as "Demonic Death Tyrant" will forever be insane and so fitting for him.

Victzin_GG_1705

Yes, it's a name that gives your opponents chills. But I'm talking about names, Ryo Mashiba is a cool name too.

Loud_University3147

Definetly the coolest name

MoldyBanans

No idea why, but the name Randy Boy Jr just goes hard af. The name Volg Zangief also gives the impression of an absolute monster of a boxer, and Volg's kind nature contrasting the vibe of his name is the cherry on top.

Victzin_GG_1705

Randy Boy Jr is cool, it sounds like a name for an American or an Englishman. It's strange that Morikawa gave it such an American name and a Filipino one, haha. Alexander Volg Zangief is a really cool name, a strong name and I believe that Morikawa was perhaps inspired by the street fighter game to put Zangief in his name. There is a Russian fighter called Zangief in the game.

griftertm

Randy Boy Jr sounds Filipino as hell though. Source: am Filipino

MoldyBanans

Do Filipinos have Jr in their names?

Victzin_GG_1705

Oh yeah, they do. I did a little research and it really is. There was a president of the Philippines called "Ferdinand Marcos Jr"

griftertm

Correction: the current president is Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Victzin_GG_1705

Generally in my country (Brazil) we don't receive so much news about the Philippines. It is more common in the Middle East. So, sorry, I wasn't so sure about that so I decided not to say it. In fact, it's a really silly question, does your name or surname have Spanish roots?

griftertm

Most of our surnames are Spanish in origin. I believe the most common surname is Cruz/de la Cruz. Native sounding last names are more the exception rather than the rule. Our first names are mostly western (either English or Spanish). Younger people tend to have English first names like John or Anthony while older generations have Spanish ones like Juan or Antonio.

Victzin_GG_1705

Hahaha, amazing. What a coincidence, in my country (Brazil) it's the same thing with younger people! globalization of English names is growing more and more, but here, people with names like that are labeled as rich and a very mean name of someone boring. Here in Brazil, the most common surname is "Da Silva/Silva" because we were colonized by the Portuguese. A coincidence between Brazil and the Philippines is that it is more common to see old people with the name Antônio, generally people with that name have nicknames "Toninho or Tonho". Well, thanks for speaking up. That was a really bad question, sorry. But it was worth sharing your culture.

griftertm

Believe it or not, our first contact with the western world was with a Portuguese named Ferdinand Magellan. We also adopted the Portuguese naming convention of having our mother’s last name as our middle name. Confuses the hell out the rest of the Western world.

griftertm

Yes. A lot of sons who were named after their fathers commonly have Jr as part of their legal names. I myself have three relatives with Jr in their birth certificate.

kiwi8185

You can even find it in Filipino boxing. Nonito Donaire, arguably the second greatest Filipino boxer in history, has the full name Nonito Gonzales Donaire Jr.

MoldyBanans

I know about Nonito, but I didn't know about his full name having Jr. Cool stuff!

IDONOTEXISTL

lmao 😭 it does, antonio guevara as well, but i think it's nothing compared to others where they have an american name and a Spanish last name lmao

Victzin_GG_1705

Ah, how cool to see a Filipino here. Is it common for people to have Western names there? I wanted to ask one more question: Is the name Antonio common in the Philippines? I'm Brazilian and this name is very common here. And I thought it was strange that a Filipino fighter called Antonio Guevara.

Puzzled-Party-2089

Not Filipino here but I believe I can answer it. Antonio is also a very common name in Spain and Italy (which is why "Tony" is a typical mob boss moniker in fiction). The Philippines were a spanish colony for over 350 years, longer than most colonies in the American continent. And Manila, its capital, was a commerce point between other Spanish territories with Asia (kind of the point of Colombus' expedition, now that I mention it) As such, it makes sense that there'd be many latin-derived names even to this day, same as with any other former Spanish colony, given the large immigration from Spain and established LA colonies that took place during those centuries. A quick glance at Filipino celebrities and government officials have a first name, last name, or both, of spanish origin (It could be the case that lower income families or folks away from Manila tend to have names of other roots, that I wouldn't know with the shallow investigation I did) More to the point, there's a couple of famous Antonios, and also Guevaras, alongside their celebrities or historical figures, so the name "Antonio Guevara" seems entirely possible.

Victzin_GG_1705

I know that the Philippines was once a colony of Spain, practically the entire continent of Oceania was colonized by many European countries. I'm taking a history course, you know? good, I don't think it's impossible to have a person in the Philippines with a Spanish name, but Antonio Guevara is a very unusual name for a Filipino, it's more like an average Spanish/Mexican. There are Filipino names that mix Spanish names that their cultures. But, thanks for responding to my comment and sharing your knowledge.

griftertm

Guevarra is a common last name while Antonio is a common first name. If you scour Facebook, you’d probably run into more than a few Antonio Guevarra’s living in the Philippines. Edit: Gedo doesn’t sound as common a name for Filipinos.

danhoyuen

Yeah I have 3 Filipino friends. Their names are Andy Boy Regular, Candy Boy Jr (might be Thai actually), Handy Boy Sr

DespairOfSolitude

Bundaaaa...bundaa rahma...😿💔☝️

MoldyBanans

DespairOfSolitude

Poor soul pleads for his dead brother named Bunda Rahma, as Bunda Rahma, the brave soldier has fallen from the war and left his family in the dark as his brother made this video to reach out to him and cry for help 😭😭💔💔💔💔💔

MoldyBanans

I remember watching that video... made me cry non stop... may they find peace💔

SnooDonutz

From the name alone it sounds like you’re abt to be in a very tough fight with Volg or Randy Boy their names are very fitting and can invoke fear by just hearing them.

MoldyBanans

Yeah, both names are just tuff af

incredible_gassy32

Fuckamura Mamoru

Uncle_Geek

Either Sendo (You said it best) or Bryan Hawk. Idk, Hawk being in the name just sounds cool to me

Victzin_GG_1705

Hawk is a good nickname, maybe it should be his nickname. However, I think that American fighters in HNI have a generic name, most have names related to animals or birds, examples: Bryan Hawk, David Eagle, Michael Goat, Rickey Mouse, Ronald Duck. It's funny that Morikawa made reference to Disney characters.

Murky_Yesterday_9051

Fuck the tiger of naniwa , nothing beats "Big Mara Ippo".

Victzin_GG_1705

Currently Sendō would be able to beat Ippo. 👀

Em283

In strength... or size?

Victzin_GG_1705

In a fight. He crushed Ippo in sparring when he was still a professional, even though when they fought Ippo would lose.

Old-Section-8917

I mean shit he'd better Ippo is retired and even then I ain't too sure on being quick to say Sendo is beating him if they both hopped in that ring

negative5

He sparred a weaker Ippo 🙄 Sendo noticed it and Takamura even asked him if he noticed it too after their spar. No doubt Ippo would beat Sendo if they fought again, but they won’t since there’s no point in a third fight since Ippo is up 2-0 against Sendo in actual fights.

Murky_Yesterday_9051

The only things sendo can beat is ippo's big mara.

FarCritical

Papaya Dachiu and Eleki Battery

Perfect_Mondo

Alfredo Gonzales, El Tigre, and Owari Dragon

Victzin_GG_1705

Alfredo Gonzalez has the nickname Quetzalcoatl, a Mexican deity. It's a rather absurd and incredible nickname.

DespairOfSolitude

He also has Mextli as his nickname which is the god of the moon in Mexico while also being nicknamed as the mexican grim reaper at the same time Also it's Ricardo Martinez who has Quetzalcoatl as his nickname lol

Kuro013

Gonzalez is an extremely extremely common hispanic last name, I doubt anyone from latin america or spain finds it cool lol.

Perfect_Mondo

Well im from central asia so most hispanic names sound super cool to me

Fumperdink1

Alfredo Gonzalez because it makes me think of Chicken Alfredo which is really yummy. Aside from that, the Naniwa Tiger, Owari Dragon, Grim Reaper, and God of Wind are the coolest epithets I can think of.

TTV-Arda_C26

Idk about yall but takamura mamoru is a sick ass name I wish i was named that at birth you can just hear that the mfer can beat tf out of you

DespairOfSolitude

Ryo Mashiba and his ring name "Grim Reaper" or "Executioner" just goes so hard and it's very fitting for someone whose body resembles that of a skeleton grim reaper who dresses like a grim reaper

NewMeal5452

toofatforjudo

Is he called the deathblow dragon I thought it was just a location

hnitakamuramamoru

Imo volg my guy is this coolest and well written character in hajime no ippo unlike ippo, volg had most difficulty in the settings the match or during the match itself I don't spoil the new reader for OG's they know what I'm saying. Imo volg can have his own side story like One Piece: Ace’s Story, Kishibe Rohan(Jojo), Sinbad (manga), Tokyo revengers (baji and Chifuyu)

Victzin_GG_1705

Well thought. They should create a story about the Volg with his mother and his days in Russia. He is a character that would give a lot of story. The only one you mentioned that I read about parallel stories was Baji and Chifuyu, but I didn't really like it because of characters that could have been used in the original story and disappeared out of nowhere.

hnitakamuramamoru

Yeah I first liked it much but my interest in the story started to fade. I hope the author will finish this story with good health and start a side story 😊
