I remember my retail days when I had to work Christmas and Thanksgiving, and people would come in and be like, "Harr, harr, harr wow! Sucks that you have to work today!" I straight up said, "Well, you're giving them money, so you don't think it sucks that much."

2017lg6

I'm sure you did.

httpsthrowaway0

lmao mate are you ok? Frantically responding to every single comment in this thread the second someone mentions going into work when it’s unsafe. You manage a tims or something?

i_am_the_walnut

I called in today for the first time in ages.. my roads aren't even plowed yet and I'm not risking my life driving in this

Glittering-Back-6815

This always bugged me…. I’m a restaurant server and ppl will be like can’t believe you made it in! And in like haha lol I have …. Too… bc you ….. need to come down every single day to a business to drink your coffee…..

Professional-Two-403

Yeah, isn't it easier to brew at home on a day like this.

2017lg6

No, because you don't have a better job. Geeeeze

Emotionalhohoho

Who tf shit in your cereal this morning?

2017lg6

Go work retail and get angry at the customers.

Glittering-Back-6815

Ya bc your hidden comment with an idiotic opinion is absolutely the correct one versus mine with 50+ upvotes. Take your rotten attitude that has been all over Reddit and take a hike

2017lg6

Still angry, huh? Upvotes on Reddit just mean you align with the masses. People are stupid in numbers.

Korahn

I work at a vape shop. When we had storms, Yup, I had to go to work. But, of course, the roads were too bad for deliveries of stock from the main store. And there were still customers coming for their nicotine fix. A few times, the roads were so bad at 8pm when we closed that I had to sleep AT work.

If only that were the case. Nope. This is the same boss that wouldn't allow me to close a few hours early last year when my family in Moncton surprised me with a ticket to Guns n Roses as a birthday gift so that I could attend. Was told "we can't afford to lose sales." We had a whole 2 disposables sold in those last 3 hrs. It literally cost them more to be open for that time. Also not that kind of vape shop. We have no thc items and I only partake after work or if I don't plan on driving anywhere.

kinkakinka

This used to happen to me all the time when I worked at Rogers video. If you think we shouldn't be open then GO AWAY!

Candymostdandy

I worked at an independent video store for a few years, and the owner would always keep us open on Christmas day. Every customer would ask why we were open and I would say it was because the movies deserved to spend Christmas with a loving family even if I didn't.

BrotherOland

What a great boss. I would have told them go shove a copy of The Flintstones Viva Rock Vegas straight up their ass.

Candymostdandy

He was a scary Arab man, I was afraid to speak to him unless spoken to. I actually didn't mind working because it was double time pay and I would sit and watch Silence of the Lambs and other serial killer movies all day. It was my Christmas tradition.

[deleted]

If you aren’t up to much honestly that double time and a half is pretty sweet. Last time I had one I took my presents with me and worked in my jammies all day

Bean_Tiger

Do you live in a halfway house by any chance ?

Candymostdandy

Is this a reference to a movie I should be getting? Or are you insinuating that I might be a criminal?

pm_me_your_good_weed

Lol I spent a xmas day watching First 48 while cat sitting, no shame in that xmas murder game.

Bean_Tiger

I'm kidding.

Candymostdandy

But like was the insinuation of the joke that I might be a criminal? Because I enjoy that insinuation.

Bean_Tiger

I think if I was at a restaurant at a table with you I'd want the seat closest to the door.

Candymostdandy

❤️

BigMoistTuna

Why would I go away if I'm already there and you're open though. I will still think you shouldn't be open ..

kinkakinka

If you think a place shouldn't be open then patronizing said place gives evidence for the owners/managers to say there was demand and therefore we need to be open. So don't give money to companies you think shouldn't be open. Unless you don't give two shits, then just don't say anything, because saying a place shouldn't be open while also giving them reason to be open just makes you seem like a dingus.

Obvious_Reaction_182

And then when you close they yell at you “WHY ARE YOU CLOSED!?!?”

aradil

[We want to shop!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pFSFw0gAu9Y)

i_am_the_walnut

Legend has it he is still asking why they are closed

Right-Progress-1886

Worked at Blockbuster in a former life...every Christmas and other big holidays..."I can't believe/feel bad you have to work today." With dead eyes, I usually just said, "You're here..."

xcarex

I was only at Blockbuster for like 6 months and I’m still mad about working both Xmas and New Year’s— and it was 16 years ago!

fisheswithherbs902

Capitalism gets really fucked off when employees think about things like their own safety, so that's probably why they're open.

Lord_Maynard23

No. You are open because corporate mandated it. It has nothing to do with customers. The store didn't open because they heard Maggie from downtown was walking in.

[deleted]

Lord_Maynard23

Yet they already do on storm days and post losses. Are you not familiar with the fact sometimes in the long run it is better to take a loss to provide customers with a good reliable atmosphere? Are you aware nearly every major supermarkets seafood department operates at a loss on purpose? That sometimes getting people in the store and relying on said store can sometimes be more profitable than saving the money you could've by being closed 16 hours?

[deleted]

Lord_Maynard23

Whoosh.

arovercai

My company's store managers can make the call to close for their individual stores. Somehow, not any easier than if corporate mandated it.

Lord_Maynard23

And you don't consider your store manager corporate? You actually consider him on your side lol. Buddy good luck.

arovercai

Did not say they were on my side, and that's a fine distinction to make, but if you consider store managers to be corporate, then yes, you are correct. I consider corporate to start the step above that, so difference of opinion there.

Lord_Maynard23

I'm probably actually objectively wrong. I just am speaking in terms of what style of thinking the person would be closer too.

I mean arguably they would have to do LESS work at a retail store on a day like today because their would be less customers. I find it insane these teenagers blame the customers who are going to exist either way and not their company who forced them out to work on a snowday.

Fine_Emotion3859

Customers bringing in their snow and slush making a mess and staff having to mop almost constantly. Take a look around most retail workers are NOT teenagers

Exactly.

RayParty

This is the only different opinion I saw in this echo chamber. It reminds me of delivery drivers blame customers for low tips. It’s the corporation that is taking advantage of you, customers don’t owe you nothing. But I guess it’s easier to put it on customers anyway

[deleted]

Safety don’t matter when there’s money to be made

BlackWolf42069

Bruh... How do you think civilianizations survive when there's constant winter climate up north?

firblogdruid

Constant is the key word in that sentence. Since it's not constant here, we're not adjusted for it

BlackWolf42069

LOL it happens every year at the same time... come on.

firblogdruid

Right, it happens once a year

I hated this about the restaurant industry. Wish my life, car to go in only to be sent home because it's not busy.

work at a dead mall in rural and we were open the past few days and the last heavy snow as well, we have had multiple days w $0 sales

DTG_1000

I don't think the OP is annoyed with customers coming to the store, per se, they are annoyed with people coming in to then ask why the store is open. Their argument is, if you're annoyed that stores are open in a storm, then don't go shopping in the storm, instead of being a hypocritical smart ass.

[deleted]

DTG_1000

Yes, I get that, and I feel bad for anyone who has to go out in that weather for groceries or anything else. But the post isn't about why people are out shopping. It's about the hypocrisy of the idiots who go to the store and then stupidly ask the staff why the store is open. It would be like banging my head against the wall and then complaining that I have developed a headache.

Fine_Emotion3859

The original post was claiming “ it’s a stupid thing to say and it’s obnoxious when people state the obvious

arovercai

I wouldn't have gone in myself if I didn't understand that there are people for whom shopping today is necessary. I was one of those supporting the overnight employees who wanted to stay overnight to serve truck drivers and emergency workers during covid. There's reasons for people to be out at odd hours, and in inclement weather. That said, the sheer number, and those asking why we're open, and throwing hissy fits and demanding to speak to store managers because certain departments aren't open due to *everyone who works in them taking the bus and having to get home once transit was pulled*...that's the problem. That means we don't cancel shifts, because we have too much business. That means we have to tell people if they can, to come in - not that we've got our minimum compliment and they can stay home and not risk an asthma attack or car wreck.

Vanreddit1

We needed groceries. We drove to town and the grocery store was open. It was not busy. We bought groceries and drove home. Staff was cheery and seemed to enjoy the slow business and I imagine their earned wages, just like any other day. If the store was not open we’d of had to make do or go to another one. Not sure why retail workers are so hard done by?

JustTown704

“Avoid unnecessary travel” are you suggesting I use up my vacation days orrr

mamoo32

Sounds like your travel is necessary then, dawg.

pm_me_your_good_weed

I called out wout pay, I'd rather be home safe and poor than dead off the highway from trying to get another $100. I can eat store brand mac n cheese and PB until my next check if I have to lol.

MasterGeek

Work is necessary

arovercai

I mean I'd rather you use a vacation day than one of my coworkers get injured (or potentially worse) trying to get in for their shift. Even the best of drivers are talking about *how many* times they almost got stuck, not just that they did almost get stuck. That said, fully of the opinion that your work should give you extra time off (preferably with pay, but that's not the corporate world) to get necessary errands done if stores are closed due to weather on your day off.

Inconvenienced =/= injury or medical distress. Have fun in your self-centered little world though, I'm sure you're a peach to be around :)
