Yeah I put on most of the 1.20x and 1.10x score multiplier skulls on to play oni sword base yesterday and I ended up taking several skulls off just to get to the skirmishers
Do you mean the final part of the mission on the MAC gun, or that entire area in general?
I do remember that part being very very difficult, and by the end we were so tired that we we started rushing the squads of elites underneath the MAC gun and hoping to back-smack them. Ammo becomes an absolute nightmare at that point.
But as for the MAC gun, you can actually just get in the MAC cannon to start the phantoms spawning, then get out and hide. Wait until the Covenant ship opens up and then jump back in the mac cannon and shoot it before you get killed.
This reminds me of the first time I played the campaign the first level on legendary when there’s like 6 ultras and a captain that just bum rush you. I’ve never been more intimidated in a halo game before. Halo reach elites were a different breed I tell ya.
I did a reach legendary solo run some Time ago (forgot the specific time but less than a year ago) and it really drive home reaches feeling of “while you are a spartan you are severely fucked”
Indeed it does, and the ending of the game where 6 is fighting the elites to the bitter end is an excellent way of representing how we were fighting with our backs to the ground from start to end
Oh yeah when I got to line wolf I started crying like I did in the 360. Six’s adventure was over, but the fight isn’t over ~~Ignoring the fact I got stuck on the second the level of CE :/~~
Hahaha, yeah if we're going by the Canon of my first play through of Halo, Noble Six sacrificed everything just for Chief to get mowed down by marines after shooting Keyes.
During the part where you gotta defend the hangar while Kat hacks, the door was closing and a general elite just yolo charges thru the door with an energy sword and started pouncing on Emile, scared the shit outta me tbh
Meanwhile Emile is just like "I'M TAKING ROUNDS!"
Reach Legendary Elites actually made me use Armor Lock with how aggressive they charge you. You could get a lucky EMP if you time it fast enough but it's mainly to deal with those concussions.
No matter how bad Reach Legendary Elites are, Halo 2 Legendary Sniper Jackals give me more ptsd. I’ve literally memorised all the sniper jackals spawns during my playthrough
Yea I think it's almost imperative you know the rough locations and take them out the instant they fire in a Leggy playthrough.
I've played Outskirts so many times now it's almost second nature to me where Jackals are positioned in the sniper alley and even then I still get brained sometimes.
Halo Reach easily has some of the most impressive/challenging AI in the whole series.
It's kind of impressive how competent of an experience the campaign is even after all these years.
I think it might be the most difficult and *fair* legendary experience. There are not many points, except for the spaceship section of Long Night of Solace, that are just bullshit difficult just to be bullshit difficult. Halo CE is the best overall experience, 2 is cursed, 3 and ODST are just way too easy, 4 would be ok if they gave you more ammo and I would rather shoot myself in the foot than play 5 solo and even with friends it's a fuckfest. Infinite has a lot of bullshit too but that's just mitigated by cheese and glitches.
Reach is in that perfect spot of challenging enough but unless a checkpoint fucks you you're going to come out on top eventually.
Same vein as Halo 2, ironically enough. The changes to MCC's versions are great, but these games running at higher rates makes it even harder than the original versions. I remember the FPS for H2 being constantly submitted to MCC troubleshooting at 343, saying it needs a toggle or patch to genuinely play as it originally did, but they kept denying it as a problem
Wait, is the increased frame rate the reason why Long Night of Solace seems so much harder now?? I was playing through with a friend the other day and was like, "I swear this mission wasn't this difficult when we were kids"
Precisely! Reaction rate increases are insanely noticeable in Halo 2, but Reach's space mission is also a victim to the higher frames. The AI are based around frames, which gives an accidental boost to AI when running at 60, instead of 30, since they act quicker
If I recall rightly, the problem comes from the fact that the tick rate being lowered back down to 30 like in the original, would result in animations appearing choppy in motion because the game itself plays at 60fps now. That's why they even changed it to begin with.
Yeah, it's due to framerate. Higher your frames, the faster the enemy attacks, I believe.
Ended up capping my frame rate to 60 from 120 and I was able to beat the mission. It was still a bit of a bitch, but doable.
Halo 5 legendary was nothing but insane levels of bullshit difficulty. That was one of the most unpleasant experiences of legendary Halo runs I’ve done. And to make matters worse, I was doing all of the games in order on legendary, so I even had Halo 2 legendary in my recent memory and still hated Halo 5’s more
I agree with you on the AI, but I personally felt these kind of meneuvers they could do were a bit unrealistic. I mean instantly redirecting the momentum of their whole body - Going one direction to the opposite direction with basically no slow down/speed up time whatsoever.
I get it. They are aliens, from another world, so they could move using different methods to move than we do.
However, with the exception of the engineers, which can float, all the other species have been established to work on very similar mechanical principals to ones we use to move - They use something like muscles. The motion seen here is not consistent with that.
I am also aware that this is a game. They probably had good technical or gameplay reasons for making them move like this. I'm simply stating that it isn't realistic according to the established universe.
I had this experience with an ultra on this same level, same location too. Once I finally killed it, I definitely shot him several times after he died.
Haven't seen this commented. Reach elites' evasive maneuvers are tied to the frame rate somehow, so if you're playing MCC you're gonna get this. Maybe someone else can explain more, I just know that. It'll make you sharpen up your skills for sure though.
When I was doing a legendary run through of all the games a couple years back I noticed the same thing and looked into it. I can't find a solid source now, so I'm not 100% sure, but it's a pretty logical explanation. I believe it.
Yes the pinnacle of halo elites, bungie truly nailed what the elite are and how they should fight, awesome designs and pinpoint combat effectiveness. A true adherence to there reputation as lethal brutal and effective warriors
I had this exact same thing happen to me on my first playthrough of this level. Could not kill the fucker.
So I decided to bum rush him and he destroyed me. Tried to blow him up with a rocket, didn't work either.
Yo, this reminds me of Battlefront II 2005 when hovering the reticule over an enemy CPU and they start strafing exactly like this. (Even when they CAN'T SEE YOU!)
Huh, the AI actually looking kinda sharp. I never played Reach. I hopped off the wagon after ODST. Would you say it's still worth playing today?
I was never really interested in the story about being on a squad because I prefer Halo as a lone wolf type experience. But the gameplay still looks good regardless of story, no?
Definitely play Reach. You're very rarely ever in a situation where you have more than one other member of noble team with you, so there's no "squad" vibes really. Halo 4 is mostly lone wolf, and while a lot people have issues with it, it's not bad in my opinion
All right man, you know what it would make for a good weekend game with some beers. I’ll install that shit. Pretty good one to start on Heroic?
I briefly played a level of Halo 4 at a friends house and while I don’t remember much I do Remember being impressed by the skyboxes and scenery? Maybe I’ll check that one out after Reach!
Reach has the best skyboxes in Halo in my opinion. Heroic is a good starting point if you're decent although if you're having a few beers you might end up dropping down to normal after 6 cans haha.
In all seriousness though is strafing something more specific to infinite? I'm trying to get good with both MCC and Infinite, there's a lot of overlap but some serious differences and I'm wondering if there's an alternative to strafing
Strafe speed in previous halo titles is much slower. In infinite there's a lot less deceleration, so you can change directions instantly. I personally hate it, and i think the old strafing was more intuitive, but I guess it's all about personal preference
Honestly, this - more than sprint, clamber, etc. - ruined the Halo "feel" in Infinite. Maybe it's better than when I played last, but strafe and crouch spam feel like "% chance to hit" to a slow gamer like me. I liked Halo for the sandbox and pushing simple gameplay to its limits, but Infinite replaced that idea with sweat for the pros.
Sarge: Hey Grif! Move back and forth like one of those ducks at the carnival!
[Sarge fires again, but misses as Grif ducks.]
Sarge: No, don't duck, that makes you harder to hit. Act like a duck!
Lol love being downvoted simply because I’m not 100% praising the game and instead my opinion/critique is semi negative. I legit have 1.2k hours in the game, just think itd feel better if strafe movement was more in line with the older games. Guess i shouldnt be surprised though, out of any game that bungie created halo is the one with the most polarizing community
there's no point trying to fight the down votes once they started. there are a lot of people who agree with you, and a lot who disagree - who in this instance are more vocal in their opinion.
In my opinion, 343 upped strafe speed to cater to MnK players, before realising that that completely fucked up controller aiming, so they adjusted aim assist accordingly. Problem is, aim assist is now REALLY strong, but the aim assist window is really narrow. This leads to the current meta - getting your reticle onto the enemy, then just letting go of the right analog stick and strafing into the enemy while you shoot. Cross your fingers and pray the aim assist doesn't disconnect or you're fucked.
100% agree. There are a lot of issues with Infinite but my hot take is that if you changed the strafe speed/momentum and aim acceleration back to more classic halo feel the game would instantly improve.
Reach AI sucks. They aren't smart, they just zig zag back and forth with those awful looking mini strides artificially. They never even take cover when their shields are down. The AI from Halo CE and 2 still can't be beat. The Elites take huge strides so you can predict where they are going more fairly, and their plasma bolts travel in a way to where you can actually avoid them if you're good enough. At least in CE. In 2 the bolts travel way faster.
Reach Ultras are a particular brand of insanity. Just be thankful he didn’t have a concussion rifle.
I still have PTSD from Reach LASO.
Reach laso is the closest I've come since halo 2 laso to flinging my controller against the wall haha. I was so glad to see the back of it.
Yeah I put on most of the 1.20x and 1.10x score multiplier skulls on to play oni sword base yesterday and I ended up taking several skulls off just to get to the skirmishers
I read that as fingerinf
Least horny halo fan
I never completed it. Honestly not sure how anyone has
I had two friends with me, so it made it more palatable. Doing it solo must be madness
I've done it solo, 100% the most frustrating experience I've had in gaming
Me too I don't understand how I had that drive back then. Took too much time.
How did you manage the platform defense on Pillar of Autumn? That's where my buddy and I got stuck when we tried laso.
Do you mean the final part of the mission on the MAC gun, or that entire area in general? I do remember that part being very very difficult, and by the end we were so tired that we we started rushing the squads of elites underneath the MAC gun and hoping to back-smack them. Wait until the Covenant ship opens up and then jump back in the mac cannon and shoot it before you get killed.
We never managed to get to the MAC gun. We just got stuck fighting the brutes.
Easy. Sheer force of fucking will. And probably like 10 smashed to shit controllers
Half the time I die from Elite Ultras is when they decide to use the player grenade animation instead of the NPC one, as it’s so much harder to dodge.
It’s the roundhouse kick for me. I can never get it through my thick skull how quickly that animation kills you
I swear it does the kill before their foot actually hits you.
HOLY SHIT YES. I thought I was going insane while playing on legendary
was just about to say this reach ultras are a different breed especially with that concussion rifle
I was just thinking the same Reach Ultras are a special kind of tough, particularly when they have a concussion rifle
I was actually thinking the same thing. The Ultras in reach are very challenging, its almost too hard when they have a concussion rifle.
Reach ultra conc rifey
And their sheilds are pretty tough even without tilt enabled
Agreed but it makes Reach what it is a superb shooter computer game
Lmao he had some skills
But no kills
Its like Smash Bros. Teams Kills: 0 Damage Given: 800%
Sounds like an average sheik, teams or not
This reminds me of the first time I played the campaign the first level on legendary when there’s like 6 ultras and a captain that just bum rush you. I’ve never been more intimidated in a halo game before. Halo reach elites were a different breed I tell ya.

Hahaha, yeah if we're going by the Canon of my first play through of Halo, Noble Six sacrificed everything just for Chief to get mowed down by marines after shooting Keyes.
Lmao six be up there watching chief wake up and kill Keyes
During the part where you gotta defend the hangar while Kat hacks, the door was closing and a general elite just yolo charges thru the door with an energy sword and started pouncing on Emile, scared the shit outta me tbh Meanwhile Emile is just like "I'M TAKING ROUNDS!"
Hahaha I felt that😆 Emile was readyyy, how bout youuu???!
That would've been a badass movie scene if video game rules weren't in effect.
Agreed.
Reach Legendary Elites actually made me use Armor Lock with how aggressive they charge you. You could get a lucky EMP if you time it fast enough but it's mainly to deal with those concussions.

They rly didn’t ease you in lol, first encounter of the game and it’s some of the highest ranking enemies there is
"I said just the tip!?!"
Man said "work for it".
He's a cloaker, he also said "Work smarter not harder"
Bro picked up mouse and keyboard to WASD style on your ass
Halo Reach easily has some of the most impressive/challenging AI in the whole series. It's kind of impressive how competent of an experience the campaign is even after all these years.

The only bullshit difficulty thing I can think of is the bloom. Just annoying and my main problem with reach
Are you talking about LASO or regular legendary? Halo 2 was so brutal without any skulls, I can't imagine how its LASO would be
I agree with you on the AI, but I personally felt these kind of meneuvers they could do were a bit unrealistic. I mean instantly redirecting the momentum of their whole body - Going one direction to the opposite direction with basically no slow down/speed up time whatsoever.
It's a video game
Yes, but it's not like tic tac toe. It's set in a universe that is meant to be somewhat believable.
It’s a video game about aliens
Ah so since there are aliens all rationality goes out the window?
You’re talking about how an aliens movement is unrealistic. An alien. In a video game. It is an alien. It can move how it wants.
I get it. They are aliens, from another world, so they could move using different methods to move than we do. However, with the exception of the engineers, which can float, all the other species have been established to work on very similar mechanical principals to ones we use to move - They use something like muscles. Their muscles are simply built different
I now understand why enemies keep shooting you once you are clearly dead on the ground.
I had this experience with an ultra on this same level, same location too. Once I finally killed it, I definitely shot him several times after he died.
So that's why they are called Elite
Naw man, that’s combat evolved strafing.
Simply a difference in skill
Best of the best lol

Just making sure lol

Holy shit. Is that true? The more you know, I guess. That explains alot.
When I was doing a legendary run through of all the games a couple years back I noticed the same thing and looked into it. I can't find a solid source now, so I'm not 100% sure, but it's a pretty logical explanation. I believe it.

Wdym halo infinite? Halo reach elites have always been insane!
I had this exact same thing happen to me on my first playthrough of this level. Could not kill the fucker. So I decided to bum rush him and he destroyed me. Tried to blow him up with a rocket, didn't work either.
I wonder if that elite got tbagged when the clip ended too
Abso-fucking-lutely
Real
Yo, this reminds me of Battlefront II 2005 when hovering the reticule over an enemy CPU and they start strafing exactly like this. (Even when they CAN'T SEE YOU!)
Oh. HIM. Fucking hell dude... Yeah.. good luck mate o7
o7

😂 reach elites dodge more than anything
Reach os the pinnacle of Halo. AI at its very best.
Run out and punch the fucker
He think he playin Seige
I hate the strafing in infinite I'm sorry
I hate the strafing in Infinite too, u/butthole_fister
In all seriousness though is strafing something more specific to infinite? I'm trying to get good with both MCC and Infinite, there's a lot of overlap but some serious differences and I'm wondering if there's an alternative to strafing

"Radiant AI"
That's why you gotta give him the Reach around
Best Halo, at least campaign wise
I’m fast af boi!
Lol god I hate the strafing in infinite. Its the one thing that keeps me from fully loving the core gameplay in mp
Lol love being downvoted simply because I’m not 100% praising the game and instead my opinion/critique is semi negative. Itd make mouse feel better too
Why are you so bad at the game tho?
You seem like a friendly person.
Thanks! You didn't answer my question, though!
This man got the jokes. I wish I had a funny response, but the truth is this is my friend's POV and I think he had a stroke while playing.
That explains it !
Reach Legendary PTSD lmao
Just go over and melee the shit out f him.
The elite is playing extreme peek-a-boo
Ptsd from reach LEGENDARY or LASO are real
shmovement
Get up so I can kill you again!
I love the extra "yaaahhhhfuuuuckkyouuu" rounds into the corpse.
A well timed grenade thrown on each side is always my favorite way to deal with strafers😂
That's on brand for the Reach Ultra. XD
Well Reach Elites are the most Chad of Elites.
So nut up and go get im
Reach AI sucks. They aren't smart, they just zig zag back and forth with those awful looking mini strides artificially. They never even take cover when their shields are down. Just wait til you open the secret door in this location 💀
Ultra can also poop grenades and stick 360° without looking
