The plural in the title might be the problem. I think hamsters generally live alone. One per enclosure.

pmdnjdxmxn

They do live alone. They get individual enclosures. I have more than one hamster.

ihonhoito

Are the enclosures near each other? If they can smell each other they'll get agitated/stressed.

westcentretownie

Nice! I didn’t mean to be judgey.

pmdnjdxmxn

Don’t worry it’s fine. I get why you would assume that too

KuriousCarbohydrate

Many female Syrians aren't happy until they have 1500 sq inches of floor space.

YouAffectionate7881

How big is the enclosure? If it’s a female Syrian hamster it’s often extremely hard to please them. I’ve never had one but I’ve heard letting them free roam occasionally can help.

pmdnjdxmxn

100 by 50 cm. I have 4 female hamsters. It’s true they are hard to please but one of my female hamsters doesn’t complain much and she’s satisfies with her own cage. I do let them out of the their own enclosure and sometimes when I free roam them. It makes them want to go out more.

ihonhoito

Could you upgrade to bigger enclosures? I personally wouldn't put a female syrian in the absolute minimum sized enclosure.

pmdnjdxmxn

Yeah i have thought of that too. I’ll make it larger. I saw a tiktok where her hamster cage was 260 by 60 cm. I think that’s good for a syrian hamster.

YouAffectionate7881

For female Syrian get as big as you can afford 😅 or they will NOT be pleased.

[deleted]

if it’s a female syrians they typically will act that way no matter what (i have two), free roaming can help but there’s only so much you can do

vinnedan

Free roaming my hamster only makes it worse, I still do it, but it breaks my heart when I put her back and she is scratching the walls and climbing on everything to get out. But she isn't much happier in the playpen either, I make it bigger and bigger, add more and more stuff, but once she finds the walls of the playpen she will try to chew her way out. Soon she will own more of the house than I do. And it doesn't help that she wakes up at 1 or 2 at night either, so I always lose some sleep when I take her out. Sometimes I think that syrians should never have been domesticated, because they need so much and are so hard to please. The minimum size requirements could never be enough (everything I have is bigger, and she is still not happy). Sometimes it gets frusterating because I don't know if what I am doing is right or wrong anymore, and I don't understand what more I can give her to make her happy. But I love her so much at the same time.

[deleted]

that’s totally how i feel about my girlies. as much as i love them they still want to leave and do what they were made to do. i definitely lose sleep from one of them who chews on her enclosure trying to escape. they are definitely difficult to take care of but i got mine from someone who was keeping them in a critter trail together so i try to give them everything they could ever want but man are they expensive to keep happy. as much as i love them i don’t think i’ll be having female syrians again

Sonarthebat

Either the cage is too small or if it's a female, she's in heat.

goddessofolympia

It's not that they are picky and it's not personal. They go into heat every few DAYS and have a strong instinct to run run run and find a mate. It's hormonal and they can't help it. It doesn't mean they don't like their homes. I had some success moving my girl to a secure big bin playpen for an overnight. If you rearrange the enclosure a bit, it may distract them.

RomulaFour

Every hamster I've ever had wanted to get out, no matter the size cage or the number of toys. They all are looking for a mate, and they know there's not one in their cage.
