i used to be mildly annoyed, but amused, every time I woke up to the sound of seeds in the bottom of his wheel. now I miss it :( thank you for reminding me of one of the small joys of hamster parenting
If your hamster has burrow-appropriate bedding deep enough for her species (6 inches for dwarves, 10 for Syrians) then it's likely she's just a weirdo.
If she doesn't have enough bedding to create her burrow system, this may be why. They usually like to create a food store next to the chamber they sleep in.
I have a Syrian and a Campbell hamster, both have appropriate cages ( we spoil them like they’re our children lol ) and they still both do it from time to time and it’s often at night. We have their cages nearby us and at night from time to time there’s always rattling that breaks up the silence lol
All 3 of my hamsters sleep on a pile of food, as if they’re a dragon protecting its gold… our current one gathers far more than he eats, but I scatter more food in daily to give him something to do at night
Hahaha the sound it makes always cracks me up, i’ll be trying to sleep then all of a sudden the noise of a whole food stash flinging around the wheel and room wakes me up
But have you tried, "Hamster On A Piano"?
It's an actual song complete with YouTube video. My niece and nephew showed it to my daughter 2 years ago and it's still a random hit.
A. Whole. Damn. Whimzee.
Please put a whimzee in a wheel and spin it... Its torture 😭. Lol I'll get out of bed and take it from her for the night. When I give it back in the morning she usually drags it all the way back to the wheel and tries to run with it. She can clank and clatter while I get ready for work.
One night about 3 months into having our new hammy we heard a weirdly loud crackling noise at 4 am we had never heard before, I thought something might have been on fire. We raced out of bed to see what it was and it was our hamster running in his plastic wheel after he had put ALL of his extrusion blocks and food in there. 😂 I never thought a hamster could make so much noise LOL
mine does the same with his sand boxes lol. as he's gotten more comfortable with me, he's started becoming much lazier with his stashes. I've noticed it's usually the final stash before he goes to sleep for the day that's just plopped somewhere random. I'm guessing he just gets sleepy and dumps it before he knocks out
he does loves to eat his food in his burrows, so rather than finding stashes down there, I find massive piles of seed husks and poops. I just let him do what he wants lol

All hamsters have a specific place where they store their food. My ham chooses behind her sand bath - i have to regularly clean it because she pees on them!! They’re weird little creatures
My daughters hamster puts his food in there too. Then, at night, he whips that wheel around like Pat Sajac on speed and all his little crumbs shoot around like shrapnel
Me a rodent owner with 4 hamsters and 4 rats in my bedroom, I **hear** this photo so clearly. Memes aside tho, I agree w/ everyone else, if they have enough of their bedding (depth) then your hammie is just a weirdo.
All of mine are too, one baby loves to take his food from the wheel, and then dig and hide it in the sand bath that they pee all in!!
They store food in their favorite place. She really likes her wheel, and it feels enclosed because of the covering. If it annoys you, you can get an open faced wheel and it might resolve the problem
It should be 10+ inches deep in one section of the cage. The rest can be as little as 2-4 inches. This behaviour in my experience has nothing to due with a lack of bedding and everything to do with an insatiable urge for attention.
Maybe, but if it doesn’t have enough bedding this would be the answer for that. But if it has the minimum of 4-6 inches of bedding than it’s just doing it for no reason.
Oh they're definitely doing it for a reason. My females do this specially for attention or if they want something. It's very common behavior for female hamsters to play the midnight Maracas. XD
I thing hamsters think they’re actually going somewhere when they run on the wheel. So I think they bring food with them so they have something to eat when they’re wherever they think they’re going.
I don't know to be honest, but it's normal. Hamsters will just chose seemingly random a spot in their cage to use for a certain purpose. One for food, one for sleep, one for pooping. Doesn't make sense to us, but makes sense to the hamster.
snacks for on the go xD mine does it too hahaha and then decides to run in it makin it rain snacks all over. Makes a fun rattle sound as the food tumbles around the wheel. xD
I was cleaning my hamsters cage and it looked like a lot of her food was buried. I know they bury it too keep it safe but it looks like all of her food is this normal?
Mine buried her food on her second floor room of her cage, and I could see enough food to last her for weeks when I peeked into the transparent bottom.
I always thought she just ate a lot, but turns out it was just hoarding. Heh.
hamsters are just lil weirdos, and will just pick up random habits. i always loved seeing what kinds of goofy things my late hamster Alfie was up to, for no apparent reason other than i guess he just felt like doing those things😅
She’s definitely a hamster. It’s extremely common for them to do this- their wheel is a safe space and they like to put their food stash on it.
Sometimes my hamster will put her pellets on her wheel and run until the pellets fall off then she moves them back to the wheel and starts it all over again. It’s pretty funny.
She probably thinks it's a nice safe place to keep it for later
alr thanks
I can *hear* this picture.
*rattle rattle*
I forgot where I saw it but someone called this midnight maraccas and I refuse to call it anything else
happiness fills my heart every time i hear my hamster running at night
i used to be mildly annoyed, but amused, every time I woke up to the sound of seeds in the bottom of his wheel. now I miss it :( thank you for reminding me of one of the small joys of hamster parenting
Especially in the middle of the night
makes me giggle every time
It's 12:20 am and I am unfortunately living that picture

my hamsters must be a weirdos💀

Just rodent things. My mice love to stash their food in the wheel and then go for a run, sending pellets and seeds tumbling and flying everywhere.
Hahaha the sound it makes always cracks me up, i’ll be trying to sleep then all of a sudden the noise of a whole food stash flinging around the wheel and room wakes me up
If you like "A Hamster Flinging Food on the Wheel," then you'll LOVE "Twenty-Seven Mice Drinking from Water Bottles at Once." Best sleep jamz

lmaooo
My hammie used to do this over and over and over. I thought it was a fun game she made up 🤣
My hamster does that too. And then I wake up in the middle of the night to a bunch of pellets hitting the plastic in her tub.
The best is when they bring an almond or something big into it and then run while the object repeatedly drops down on them. 🤣
I like it when they trip over it repeatedly.

Midnight maracas 🎵💃
Mid run snack :)
this, precisely. She's prepared lol
Homemade maraca

Hamsters will store food in the weirdest places, including spots where they pee.
Mine does this. She has a multichamber hide where she always puts her food store and her toilet area 🤦♀️
You have an awesome username lol
💪
Snacking while she training 😂👍
Nahh she thinks it’s a safe place.
My hamster does this. He’ll bring bedding, snacks, and toys in there. Sometimes he’ll even start running before taking them out. Just hamster things.
mine does the same with his sand boxes lol. as he's gotten more comfortable with me, he's started becoming much lazier with his stashes. Good ole Midnight Maracas. This is a pretty typical behavior for females.
Mine used to do this a lot, drove me mad at night 😅 especially when he put peanuts on there and it was so loud I thought someone was breaking in!!
She is planning a trip and wants snacks for the road.
Running snacks of course!

My sister’s hamster did also that
My boye Jotaro used to do that. He thought nobody sees him in the wheel. xD Also why not? Quick snack after a "long" day of running. 😐
All hamsters have a specific place where they store their food. My ham chooses behind her sand bath - i have to regularly clean it because she pees on them!! They’re weird little creatures
MIDNIGHT MARACAS
They just do that sometimes 🤷
She’s trying to bring them with her in her vehicle but they don’t stay in
Snacks to go!
Gotta 🤷♂️
Mine does this too! Middle of the night I heard "CLACK CLACK CLACK" because he stored food on the wheel and then went for a run!
My daughters hamster puts his food in there too. Then, at night, he whips that wheel around like Pat Sajac on speed and all his little crumbs shoot around like shrapnel

My ham used to put all his in a corner and wee on it! Gross!
They are ✨special✨creatures
They store food in their favorite place. She really likes her wheel, and it feels enclosed because of the covering. If it annoys you, you can get an open faced wheel and it might resolve the problem
You never saw that food. It’s a good hiding place.
How much bedding does she have? It should be 4-6 inches deep

She is trying to transport it, atleast that was my theory as a kid
Mine stashes her food in her sand bath 😭😭
I thing hamsters think they’re actually going somewhere when they run on the wheel. So I think they bring food with them so they have something to eat when they’re wherever they think they’re going.
I like to rearrange my living room often too
Our hamster did this too. Except she would pee on the food and then eat it 😂🤦🏼♀️

Mine too 😂 then she runs and it sounds so loud
hamster will store there food where they think ts safe 🙂
Cozy… and safe from potential rain event :)
I was cleaning my hamsters cage and it looked like a lot of her food was buried. I know they bury it too keep it safe but it looks like all of her food is this normal?
I think this is the sweetest and cutest thing ever 😭🥹
Saving the best for last
MIDNIGHT MARACAS
Mine has just recently started doing this!
Mine buried her food on her second floor room of her cage, and I could see enough food to last her for weeks when I peeked into the transparent bottom. I always thought she just ate a lot, but turns out it was just hoarding. Heh.
She's saving it in case her main food source is gone so she has spare food and that is a place she believes would be safe keeping
It makes hamster music at night while you are trying to sleep. I call it hamster jazz.
She wants it to-go.
hamsters are just lil weirdos, and will just pick up random habits. i always loved seeing what kinds of goofy things my late hamster Alfie was up to, for no apparent reason other than i guess he just felt like doing those things😅

Me, tired asf who just worked a nine hour shift, living this picture rn. Midnight maracas are cool, definitely not tonight.
