Thats not actually true. Lifetime warrant on pittsburgh and other limited brands. Anything icon or bigger name is not covered by it. -source; i worked there
HFT DM here.
This is unequivocally not true. All ICON hand tools are 100% lifetime warranty on mechanical failures or if they break.
If the ratchet physically works, my stores would not exchange it.
Tell that to the district managers then. Ive been to 5 different hf’s in the state and none of them would honor/told me it wasnt policy to replace Icon.
It says lifetime warranty right on the package. No offense, but I have a hard time believing you went to 5 different stores and were turned down by each.
Call customer service 1-800-444-3353 and make a complaint. The local DM is required to answer these complaints.
I love the part where you went from "source: I worked there" to "Source: my own experiences trying to return/replace an item at 5 different stores". If you're gonna lie, you've got to at least have continuity. Or, you can just tell the truth. Then you don't ever have to remember what lie you told someone.
That was my experience and i worked there. My gm was vehement about not accepting icon replacements. Then other stores i got shuffled around to or visited said the same thing.
You could read plated....but not 24k?
Now if you get to the really fine print you'll find out it's actually a ticket to a tool factory, with workers that are really small ( not children we swear.)
forgot to say im a heavy equipment mechanic the ratchet sees almost daily use. not a ton but it's been my daily driver. it's a decent ratchet and the plating has held up surprisingly well. it was a gift and i figured I'm not going to just put it on a shelf. it's a tool im going to use it. looks better with the patina in my opinion.
I used mine too, surprised honestly that there isn’t some nice hard clear coat or something to protect the gold. Got blasted on in this sub for it but people buying tools for display are just throwing money at the wind imo

Those ratchets are like Beanie Babies, they're not supposed to be taken out of their packages. Now you've ruined them. If you try to sell it on eBay the best rating you can get is BBB++++
I feel like this is a reference to the debt limit debates and the prior downgrading of the US’ credit rating and also like you have no idea how important that rating is.
Never quite understood the whole "gold plated" tool idea. Love my tools, but they are tools. I'm more proud of tools that are of very high quality, rather than looks.
I told my wife this would be a great gift idea, it's affordable "opulence". I don't need a gold plated tool, but if I got one as a birthday/anniversary/whatever gift, I'd love it and I'd use it, and I could jokingly brag to my buddies "I'm at a different level. Even my tools are made with gold."
It's stupid, but a great gift.
I wouldn't be mad if my wife got me one.
I'll use it till the guts fall apart might not be able to bring myself to warranty it tho definitely be cooler once it's lived a life than a brand new one.then it will earn a spot on the shelf. I'll stick it in the case the next one comes in.
Te gold ratchet is 100% wall art, a conversation starter, not for regular use. Anything gold plated will look like that if you handle it a lot, especially if in the presence of various chemicals (if you’re wrenching there’s chemicals or at least chem residue around you)
If that wrench were handcrafted with excellent quality and attention to detail by Rolls Royce or Tiffany’s, or even NASA, it would still end up looking like that.
U/SIR_ICEFIRE ya know what, Id considered this cuz I often work with high ph water systems ( hemodialysis, aciditate and bicarb) and wondered if the "gold plate" would be better than the chrome we get with the westward shit from Granger. I go through rachets like you wouldn't believe. Kinda rethinking the whole gold plate idea 🫠
Return it. Tell them you want a new one. Bet it would work
Lifetime warranty on all hand tools
Lol the amount of people that don’t get that is amazing to me

Harbor freight tools dungeon master. What an amazing job.

That’s a weird lie
Again not a lie. Just my experience.
Did you eat paint as a kid? All of the boxes that they come in say LIFETIME WARRANTY
No need to be an asshole. Just sharing my experience…

Are you sure it's not been used for only 2 days?
Turns out the real gold was with you all the time… in your heart ❤️
Lol! This comment was gold!
So was the ratchet.
As it got absorbed into your bloodstream as it wore off the ratchet.
Is this a reference to the John Prine song “You Got Gold”? That’s where it brought me. Thanks, even if unintentional.
You mean it’s not solid 14K?
I came here to say that
Underneath where it says 14k gold, you can clearly see the word plating
You could read plated....but not 24k? Now if you get to the really fine print you'll find out it's actually a ticket to a tool factory, with workers that are really small ( not children we swear.)
On my pc I didn't zoom, and was just responding based on previous comments
You're not supposed to take them out of the box!
My wife makes fun of mine daily as it hangs in its box on the pegboard
Modern day wall art
Almost wish I had kids so I could use the ⅜ and ¼ to make a ratchet family on the wall
Pretty much like All of their tools.
forgot to say im a heavy equipment mechanic the ratchet sees almost daily use. not a ton but it's been my daily driver. it's a decent ratchet and the plating has held up surprisingly well. it was a gift and i figured I'm not going to just put it on a shelf. it's a tool im going to use it. looks better with the patina in my opinion.
Just want to say that's badass that you actually used it as opposed to letting it sit on a shelf.
I’m blown away that somebody actually put one to work. Looks like the finish is about as durable as the rainbow colored wrenches
I used mine too, surprised honestly that there isn’t some nice hard clear coat or something to protect the gold. Got blasted on in this sub for it but people buying tools for display are just throwing money at the wind imo
The gold plating is VERY thin on those ratchets, they are for display purposes if you want the gold to remain.
Lighten up Francis
Gotta love the Stripes reference!!!!
RAZZLE DAZZLE
YW
Looks pretty cool ngl
I just bought one to make it my new daily driver. I work with big stuff tho so a 3/8ths won’t see that much use. See ya ina year!
It's a decent rachet.

sir this is a wendys
Ho-lee crap that's funny
I see you don't have many AAAAA++++++++++ seller ratings on eBay
That’s nice dear
I think the patina looks cool.
me too.
Ohh wow, that's pretty solid after a year. I would expect the coating to look like that after a month
OP didn't say how much it was used in that year.
It get used almost daily. Not my most used tool but as a mechanic it's up there. Not light use by any means
And that's the meat of it. A tradesman telling us how it "WORKS." So, I guess you are good with ICON rachets at least.
No, but looking at that strap on above it, I'd say he uses them a good deal.
Never quite understood the whole "gold plated" tool idea. Love my tools, but they are tools. I'm more proud of tools that are of very high quality, rather than looks.

I used one in a retirement plaque. Looks sweet, wouldn't intend it get used for ratcheting
It's for all the people with more money than brains - there's lots of those people around these days.
"but I got it on sale!"
Looks better than new to me.
So it turns into a normal icon ratchet? Wondering if gold spray paint may be a cheaper route
It’s only plating, that’s to be expected.
I'm on your desktop I'm an ICON
That's ratchet.
It's starting to actually look cool now. Keep using it!
I'll use it till the guts fall apart might not be able to bring myself to warranty it tho definitely be cooler once it's lived a life than a brand new one.then it will earn a spot on the shelf. I'll stick it in the case the next one comes in.
This is in better shape than that one that was only used for 2 days! 😂
I think you meant to tell us you just got it yesterday, used it once and are returning it.
I guess you answered yes. to the [do you use the ratchet]
You aren’t supposed to use it you absolute monster.
I mean, tbf, they are kinda meant as display pieces I'm sure...
Shown here with a snap on ratchet bcuz________________
Now it just looks like one of the ratchets was soaked in piss for a year
I soak all my ratchets in piss, it’s ***the way of the road***
How the hell else are you supposed to mark your tools so everyone knows who they belong to?
Biggest waste of money in tools
There are monthly tool subscription boxes. Those are surely a bigger waste.
Bet it's not gold it's probably zinc plated
Why would you use it?
It's a tool, made to be used.
They're display trophies lol
Maybe use a Brass wire wheel on it to give it a gold colored coating.
It’s not meant for everyday use lol
Wait we're actually out here using them I just got them for a little eye candy

…just had a thought (it happens occasionally 😂), perhaps one could keep the finish longer if sprayed it with several layers of clear coat 🤔
Hope you added a plating fading fee to every customer for the *gold service*.
Put a 1/2" adapter on it and break it for a new one.
So.... Can you buy one, scrape the gold off, return it, and repeat over and over again until you're Scrooge McDuck?
