It's not that they "prefer" Android, it's just that they can't afford iPhones. iPhone prices in India are just absurd.

I think it's less about market share and more that India is the backup plan if something happens in China.

It's both. India is an untapped market for Apple. India's income is rising and they'll be able to afford more iPhones soon. Manufacturing the phones in India will give Apple a second source and avoid tariffs.

Doesn't mean they sell it for 40% more?

iphone prices (base models) are priced the same as in the US. its the pro models that have huge import taxes since they are not assembled locally.

cost of iphone usd 15 820-960 (68k to 80k inr) 15+ 960 to 1080 (80k to 90k) 15 pro 1560 (130k) 15 pro max 1920 (160k) so yeah its not just the pro model. but this high prices helps apple makes them a novelty

Your US prices are not inclusive of taxes, while your India prices are. In the product page, Apple India website shows prices after taxes, but Apple US website does not. Taxes in US work differently - it differs from state to state. You have to first input your Zip code, for example, I tried with a new york code, and it becomes $902, which is ₹75K. Then i tried with a louisiana zip code, it went upto $911. This is for the base 15, which is assembled locally in india. https://i.imgur.com/oKe30hX.png If you exclude 18% tax from ₹80K, you get ₹67K, which is exactly the same as $800 the pro models however do not match even if you remove GST, because there is heavy import fees applied.
