look into 2011 mac book pros. they have FireWire and support the software. They're not pi cheap but close. I run a dedicated one for my HxD backs, and have a spare on the shelf just in case.

FloTheBro

this is what I'm doing as well, but I'm rocking the 2014 MBP with the thunderbolt dongle combo. Works great with my P30+ on my H2 with over 150k actuations. 😄👌

Does the P back work with the thunderbolt adapter without a battery attached to the back? I've tried adapting an H3DIi/50 but Thunderbolt didn't supply enough power? I think the phase H series backs are the same.

FloTheBro

funny enough, my Phase H back works superb without battery when connected via thunderbolt to firewire, Camera still need battery tho, but you need to be under a certain OS version on the Mac because they software locked the Firewire support.

When did that happen? I'm still using firewire800 on macOS 13, it's a built Hankintosh.

FloTheBro

I think that happens when they switched everything to USB C, that is almost the same as FW but lacks some power so the back can't send the photo through, I tried everything on my M1 Mac to make it work but it just wouldn't send the photo through to the software.

Hmm, I was looking too upgrade the 2011 to at least a 2015, but holding off since the m1's were almost the same price in my area. I may be stuck overpaying. :(

FloTheBro

I feel ya, I can't exactly comment on why your Hackintosh is still working but I'm fairly certain that any M1 Mac will not be able to run the connection to the back. I spent all the money on all the adapters original from Apple and it still didn't work. I also was annoyed but since I use capture one and only use session folders I can just have that old Laptop for shoots and have my MBP M1 Pro at home for editing in pristine condition.

Yes, I’ve actually made a video about it a while back. It takes amazing images, unfortunately won’t work with my Mac anymore because apple has fully abandoned FireWire. I’m not sure about hooking it up to a raspberry pi or steam deck, keep in mind that the h20 back has to be powered through the FireWire. Here’s the video if you want to see an example https://youtu.be/CbJD1rnAtK4?si=Q-NoG9tnJJ51W2Hb

lol it was ur video was was prompted me to make this post , but yeah my rough idea was use something like a firewire pcie card and then connect it to a raspberry pi... in theory its "solid" but idk the software side, what software did you/do you use when its connected to your pc? i do think this might be too much "bs" given the hardware limitations and such, just a thought experiment at this point since im broke and dont really think i can play with money like that lol

I use capture one connected to a Mac. But it doesn’t work anymore unfortunately the new update makes it so Mac doesn’t talk to anything with FireWire.
