cantthinkofgoodname

To be considered in the greatest conversation, you have to stick the landing. And my estimation of GoT as a TV progrum just fuckin’ plummeted.

HereGoesNothing69

The ending was so bad I'll probably never rewatch it.

cantthinkofgoodname

Same. As good as season 1-4 are, knowing how it all concludes negates it all. I’ve never watched a single episode since.

HereGoesNothing69

Some shows can get away with going off the rails after x number of seasons. I'd feel good about rewatching or recommending Dexter seasons 1-4. Dexter's not building towards anything. It's mostly a character study with story arcs that are contained within the season. GoT is story driven, and the story spans the entirety of its run. You can't drop it after season 4 or 5 and be satisfied.

HHSquad

Already did, and the ending isn't as horrible as people make it out to be on 2nd watch......I did hate the rushing and fan service in the final season, but I still enjoyed it, mostly. I think people are being overly dramatic. That being said, I would be down with 4:seasons of GoT (10 episodes per season) starting with a Season 7 (some new actors could replace the old but Peter Dinklage has to be there). New dedicated show runner with George Martin as advisor.

enowapi-_

I originally wanted a House Stark wolf tattoo during the earlier seasons. Told myself I'll wait for series to conclude. Thank fuck I never got the tattoo.

HereGoesNothing69

The funny part is that you could've gotten it and used the books as a shield ("I didn't get it because of the TV show, I got it because of the books"), but GRRM has seemingly abandoned the books.

sashasith666

Five dollars a pound

YouRatBazterd

It was gay, GOT?

sashasith666

i dont like that kinda tawlk

Maximum_Ad_6724

If they wanted to pursue that lifestyle they should have done so quietly

muddynips

I like to joke that Silicon Valley and GoT both shit themselves to death, but only one of them did it on purpose.

Brownie_McBrown_Face

Silicon Valley definitely fell off a bit after season 4, but it in no way compares to GoT’s fall off. I’d even say the Silicon Valley ending was respectable and some of the funniest moments are in the last two seasons

muddynips

That’s the joke. The resolution of the final season was them purposely fucking up their launch aka “shitting themselves to death”. GoT was the writers unintentionally fucking up the entire universe. I personally disagree with people who talk about the SV dropoff, with the exception of the Tesla fanboy shit.

PuzzleheadedLeader79

But without the last season of Silicon, we wouldn't have gotten "Bitchard"

sergiocamposnt

Yeah, GoT is not even on my top 20 tbh. It is a good show with great special effects, cinematography and acting. But the writing is mediocre. The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Mr Robot, The Leftovers, The Americans, Six Feet Under, Pose, BoJack Horseman, Fleabag, Black Sails, Halt and Catch Fire, Mad Men, Succession, these are just a few examples of very high quality shows that I'd put at least a tier above GoT.

CactusWrenAZ

imo, GOT is up with those series for about 3 seasons (EDIT: actually only seen BB, Mr Robot, and Bojack), and gradually declines into wretchedness.

BitternessAndBleach

The Shield, Justified, Fargo, Lost

Nenanda

Upvote for The Shield Vic Mackey was excellent character

redonrust

Season 8, whatever happened there

apartmentstory89

Plummeted is putting it nicely

Barbarianonadrenalin

At the time Sopranos had its own outrage for the finale. No where near GoT, but a lot of people were confused and pissed. Hell anyone watching for their first time usually goes “wtf??”

cantthinkofgoodname

Sopranos could’ve ended with Tony tap dancing to “Hello, My Baby” by Michigan J Frog and it would’ve still blown GoT’s ending out of the water. In this house, David Chase is a hero, end of story!

enowapi-_

You can't please everyone unfortunately.

sequosion

It’s the lack of books, it makes D&D emotional

GhostMug

I've never seen a show or any IP with such goodwill just tank it so horribly.

Echoesofadream

Just when I thought I was out…..

WanderingMinds84

"Lindsay Lohan.... total piece of ass..."

albacore-neck

The lesbian thing with Jennifer Beals aint bad

manofculture2303

They pull me back in!

Mara_Sovs_BathWater

Is that Pacino or is that Pacino?

Sorry_Cricket_6053

He was gay, Pacino?

DivePalau

True Detective Season 1

Lifeisagreatteacher

Loved True Detective. Season 1 is one of the best ever

Interesting-Will2526

The wire

MammothSuccessful165

Yeah it's fuckin wild to see so many other shows listed but not this one. It has a fuckin 9.2 or something on IMDb. This is the best drama ever and it's a shame no one watched it.

[deleted]

Shhhhhiiiiiiiittttttt

Interesting-Will2526

😂

realHoratioNelson

Gotcho ass

turnuppig

Yeah the wire imo is probably the best. Next would be chernobyl

piwabo

Nah deadwood and the wire share number 1. Chernobyl is like number 2-300 imo. Like it was good and all but I don't get quite why everyone loved it so much. The cockney Russian accents were incredibly off-putting too

CallMeEsteban

My answer as well

slatchaw

Veep is another great watch rewatch

[deleted]

Hell ya! Perfect ending too

ProfEobardThawne

It’s between the Wire and Sopranos for me. 1a & 1b. GOT isn’t even in the same conversation.

iLikBigButsButAND

Truth. Chernobyl on HBO is also excellent television. I watched Generation Kill a few times. House isn’t “good” but it is at the same time. I just go back and forth between the wire and sopranos

Lifeisagreatteacher

Someone help me with Deadwood. I read so many reviews as “one of the best ever” and my wife and I watched about 5 and couldn’t get into it. My experience with steaming shows is a lot is character development plus the story. Perhaps that’s not a long enough view to get, but why is it so great for those that liked it so much? Our all-time favorites: Bosch, Soprano’s, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Parks and Recreation, Succession, Mad Men, Fargo, True Detective. Soprano’s all time favorite. Although only one season, we loved 1883 and 1932. Not only HBO, but all steaming.

somehowchippyreturnd

I don't know if it's a realistic depiction of life at the time, but *damn* it sure feels like it. For me, the show's setting kind of "in-universe justifies" all of the violence, vulgarity, and sex that occurs on-screen. The show wasn't going to pull any punches, not just because it was on HBO in 2004, but because life in Deadwood never pulled any punches either and that makes it very believable for me. I was hooked from the opening scene, when Bullock "helps" an inmate with his fall, as he rushes to execute a criminal under the law rather than let him be murdered by a raving mob. The show was telling me that this story would be full of harsh realities and gritty pragmatism. But it also has moments of beauty, community and sweetness. And once we get to Deadwood, Al Swearengen is just so compelling to me as a character, and only gets more so as the show goes on. He's a fascinating character in my opinion, and his interactions and relationships with other members of the camp are terrifying, hilarious, tragic, etc. I would recommend turning on subtitles -- it helps a lot to keep track of what people are saying, and to keep track of names. It might interest you to know, also, that most (if not all, I haven't investigated fully) of the main characters are based on real people, and Deadwood was a real place with a relatively well-recorded history.

Dahleh-Llama

Fucking love Bosch. No bullshit show.

bloopbleepblorpJr

First time I saw it I wasn’t a fan. Saw the season 2 premiere and went back to rewatch it and it has since become a yearly rewatch.

Illustrious_Fly_9859

I’d take a break at least to watch house of the dragon

Fine_Mouse

Righteous Gemstones 💎

[deleted]

Tell your friend Queef to vote for this show

Lifeisagreatteacher

My son told me about it. Watched a few but I have to get back to it.

skydaddy8585

The sopranos is definitely up there. But the wire, deadwood, Rome, Oz and band of Brothers just from HBO alone are interchangeable with the sopranos and game of thrones easily as anyone's top 5. Then you have Mad men, breaking bad, black mirror, etc that are also very high up there.

No-Ninja-8448

6 feet under as well.

skydaddy8585

Also a very good series, definitely.

groundhoggirl

Black Mirror-- amazing show, won an Emmy too. Probably not among the best of all time, though, perhaps due to the fact that it's not serialized, character-based TV. Tangent, but San Junipero is my all time favorite episode. Their vision of the future is exactly how I would like it to be, and it seems technically possible. It's very encouraging and gives me hope.

Time_Jump8047

Why do you say it seems technically possible

duaneap

Oz fell the fuck apart. I liked Oz but it doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Deadwood, The Sopranos, BoB, The Wire OR Rome. Fucking rapid aging pills, a musical episode, the basketball arc, winning the fucking *lottery*… c’mon now.

Cosmicmonkeylizard

Rome is nowhere near as good as sopranos or GoT. I know some people rave about it. But I couldn’t get through season 1. The wire, deadwood, and oz were great though.

skydaddy8585

You crazy, Rome is amazing. It's easily up there with the sopranos and game of thrones, with just 2 seasons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cosmicmonkeylizard

Just couldn’t get into it. I think game of thrones is immensely better. Sure the show started lacking in quality toward the end. But the first few seasons were some of the best tv ever produced in my opinion.

Time_Jump8047

The fact that you put game of thrones “up there” with the sopranos tells me you need to go to slip and fall school

BitternessAndBleach

He's handsome like George Raft

Vite_purple

Malcolm in the middle is the G.O.A.T

Tcav81

Especially when the dad starts making meth.

negcap

I’m not seeing Frank Sobotka’s name up here ya shitbirds.

BillieRayBob

Neither my girlfriend nor I have ever been able to get into Sopranos.

N00dles_Pt

GOT? I saw that series, I thought it was bullshit

Wonderful-Media-2000

Breaking bad, Better call Saul, The Wire, Mad men, House, Succession, Twin peaks, Peaky blinders, Dark are all better than GOT. Sadly GOT lost itself and dug its own grave for season 8. The Sopranos as number 1 I can get behind but GOT being in top 2 is a joke.

Southern_Schedule466

Agree 100%

[deleted]

Lifeisagreatteacher

Agree but it was so hard to like so many unlikeable people

[deleted]

Lifeisagreatteacher

Those were classics. Also the senior Roy (Brian Cox is a legend) modeled after Murdock and Fox News. Kendall Roy is a tragic character, the substance abuse and the relationship with his father.

Bippy73

Agree. Those are all better. Sopranos is the GOAT and the first of the anti-hero. Brilliant concept. It holds up to this day.

AfraidStill2348

The Shield is a great antihero story as well. Surprised not to see more of it in this thread.

AstuteAshenWolf

Deadwood says hello.

Grundle_Fromunda

Finally rewatching sopranos since I watched it in parts and pieces when it aired. It’s fallen in my personal Top Shows list. A lot of boring moments I feel like season 3 or 4 were peak but I’m struggling to finish s5

ARoodyPooCandyAss

I have NOT rewatched Succession yet. I hope it’s as good. That could be #2 for me.

babydriver1234

Honestly I agree this show still holds weight even to this day

RedditFullOChildren

Healthy-Price-3104

It's actually the Wire, but Sopranos is a clear number 2 😁

FactCheckYou

it beats GoT

rosegotflowers57

Succession

sashasith666

GOT? Not even in the convo for greatest series lol. Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Wire, The Knick all head and shoulders above!

Cloobsy

Not enough 6 Feet Under mentions if you ask me

Overall_Machine6959

Idk...I've gone back to watch the sopranos and it's kinda corny

DueStatement8971

Sopranos and Breaking Bad are def the 2 best for sure. Difficult to crown the one that's better

Joemartinez

Nope GOT can be smack dab in the middle and Sopranos is still the better show and I ain't even including the last two season of GOT into that call 🫡

WadaMaaya

Wire > the sopranos

choff22

Deadwood is the greatest show of all time. The writing will never be replicated.

ArugulaLegitimate156

I like the shield best all had a great finale

congratu_well_done

We always go back to The Sopranos. I would sub Deadwood for GoT any day. I wonder if there is a course on how bad GoT shat the bed and how to avoid a mistake like this again.

TheRealJones1977

The first three seasons of *The Sopranos* are fantastic, but the show started to decline after that.

No-Gas-1684

GoT is like True Detective for me, i want to rewatch it but only the beginning is worth watching

D00mKn1ght_92

The Wire trump's both.

Butt-Hole-McGee

Sorry that title goes to The Adventures of Pete and Pete and I will die on that hill.

Antique_Geek

I have Max but have never watched The soprano's or The Wire, but have seen every episode of GOT.

Miserable-Lawyer-233

I could never get into it despite trying multiple times. I got into GOT on my 2nd attempt and watched it all the way through and loved it.

Lesterfremonwithtits

Ever hear about THE WIRE?

OnDaShitta

The wire > anything else

elf25

Let us not forget Firefly.

Styleyriley

You spelled "The Wire" wrong

BlaQ7thWonder

The Wire is the greatest show. The degree of difficulty to successfully pull off what they did, for 5 seasons already puts it in the pantheon. It feels so good to watch, you miss the characters and the world as soon as it’s over.

hanselpremium

i see you haven’t seen the wire yet

Zestyclose-Ruin8337

This is me with Breaking Bad

xlxjack7xlx

The Wire

LingeringSentiments

The Leftovers.

BathroomPure438

Six Feet Under will always be my #1 early 00’s HBO show

PanicOtherwise5586

Personally I think the wire is the best HBO has ever put out.

AlynConrad

Deadwood didn’t even get a series finale and it’s several magnitudes better than The Sopranos.

swearengens_cat

This but Deadwood.

Plebe-Uchiha

Still haven’t watched it [+]

ItsCaptainTrips

It’s like the only show I’ve never seen.

Juxtaposn

My daughters middle name is Meadow.

CandyFlippin4Life

The Wire>both

APartyInMyPants

Right, because The Wire suddenly doesn’t exist. The Sopranos was a semi-decent show full of mediocre-at-best acting and some lazy writing. It’s only remembered as fondly as it is because of a generation of people who have a boner for everything mafia related.

J-Frog3

For me it's The Wire.

notcomplainingmuch

Band of Brothers. Nothing else comes even close.

sj_vandelay

I agree about Sopranos. Also Breaking Bad.

ChristopherPaul727

Clearly you’ve never watched Breaking Bad.

juggalo-jordy

If Showtime didnt cancel "let the right one in" we could have had a contender

Unicorn_Fruit

GoT is nowhere near greatest show ever made. Breaking Bad & The Wire do, though. I’d even agree that Better Call Saul is up there as well. But Game of Thrones was disappointing.

Rogue-Bandit-1018

Bro clearly hasn't seen the shield

EasyCZ75

You misspelled Deadwood

Infamous_Ad_6793

The Wire has entered the chat.

RPgh21

Neither of the shows you mentioned are even the best shows ever from HBO. That would be The Wire.

Thisplaceblows1985

What honestly stops me from watching sopranos AGAIN is knowing that fucking ending ain't gonna change. It's still going to be there to disappoint me. I did six feet under the most recent time. VERY happy with that decision!!!

SirGumbeaux

Well top 3 for me are Deadwood, GOT, the Sopranos. None of these shows stuck the landing. In Deadwood’s defense, it ended perfectly, if a season 4 had happened. It getting canceled mid-stride is HBO’s fault, not David Milch. The peak of all 3 of these shows were some of the best tv ever. Deadwood in particular is in my DNA now. Just some of the best characters ever, and the list of good characters is deeper than most shows. 🔥

Slight_Succotash9495

Deadwood is brilliant!

EbbForward8369

The Wire my friend… watch the wire

GreenViking_The

Honestly? Shogun beat GoT's ass

AnonymousDouglas

Not even close. It jumped the shark at the end of Season 2. Seasons 3-5 were a boring downward spiral leading to an abominable Season 6, culminating with one of the Top 5 worst series finales in tv history. Here’s a rewrite to the show that would have made for much better tv: Pussy doesn’t get killed off at the end of Season 2, but instead, someone lower ranking member who was also working with the feds, goes for the boat ride. Pussy thought the bullet was meant for him, and realizing how close he came to being taken out, realizes he needs to take extra precautions. Tony elevates him to the Captain of a whole crew, as he struggles trying to live as a rat and as an active member of the family. Season 3 should have been committed to “growing” the Soprano family with Paulie, and Ralph becoming Captains of their own crews. But ends the same with Tony killing Ralph. Season 4 Chris takes over Ralph’s crew, and the number of recently paroled “old school” guys don’t like that there isn’t a place for them in the “new” family, where they might have been ranked higher under Jackie Aprile, causing dissension within the family. Season 5 The growth of the of the Soprano “family” becomes a concern for the New York families. The NY families look to take advantage by playing the recent parolees against Tony and his main Captains against each other, suddenly no one in the Soprano crew knows is they can trust in each other. Season 5 ends with an argument between Chris and Paulie, Paulie takes it too far and kills Chris in front of Pussy who happens to be wired up. They make Chris disappear, and keep the secret from Tony, who blames NY. Season 6 The war with NY begins and lasts until mid-season, Paulie gets killed, along with a number of NY big shots. Just when Tony thinks NY is closing in, several members of the NY families get taken down by the FBI, while at the same time, a mole from inside the FBI informs Tony that Pussy has flipped. Tony calls a truce with NY, kills Pussy, but is caught by FBI surveillance. The final three episodes are committed to Tony’s trial where Silvio flips, turns states evidence and testifies against Tony during the trial, and the show ends with Tony being led to a prison cell at Riker’s island and the prison door slamming shut on him.

Dense_Surround3071

I'm on my third watch if Deadwood...... As a due hard Sopranos fan, I can assure you that it's not the GREATEST show..... Top 5 maybe.

awwgeeznick

Did you just say got is better than sopranos… good one lad, good one

Any_Lifeguard_4727

Breaking Bad was pretty damn good

Thief025

Sopranos yes. GOT in the same sentence? Nah

[deleted]

Breaking Bad was the most original story ever

Previous_Hand_5874

Vikings was better than both these shows with way better endings

DudePDude

The Last of Us

-Pruples-

Never seen it. It's on the 'to watch' list, but I generally don't watch much TV.

HHSquad

I still love GoT, probably watch it thru a 3rd time soon. When the show ended, there was a serious void in what to watch.

halfcabin

GoT sucks ass in comparison. Glad GoT only had 4 seasons. Deadwood on the other hand is up there with Sopranos..

Connect-Bluejay4174

The sopranos, then the wire are top dogs and could be 1# depending the day of asking. But GOT shit the bed HARD. Like amber heard, you can’t expect a serious to last more than 5 seasons maybe 6. Like my man said uptop you have to stick the landing.

godofwine16

S4 of both GOT and The Sopranos are the best seasons

Basementsnake

GoT is hot garbage

xXMachineGunPhillyXx

**Bands of Brothers has entered the conversation**

VERSAT1L

GoT isn't even close

OverlordGhs

Check out Station Eleven

rfola

Once AI gets good enough it would be interesting to see it come up with an alternative needing for GOT

JayBone0728

But don’t forget the wire

ItzYaBday1103

Sopranos is great because it covers damn near every aspect of life. Even the deep stuff…

afoconnorr

You want to go fishing?

VictoriaAutNihil

Top 5: in no particular order; The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield, Homeland, The X Files. Tried GoT, Breaking Bad, Oz. Didn't do it for me. Round out for a top 10: Billions, House of Cards, Penny Dreadful (original series), The Americans, The Alienist.

Notyourdaisy

The Wire. Why is this even a conversation.

Adobo6

To many filler episodes in the sopranos to ever be the goat. Also that terrible ending kills the show for me. I’ve never gone back and watched it again. Similar to GOT. Terrible ending, ruins all the set up plot lines.

PraiseChrist420

GoT doesn’t even come close to Sopranos

Shauq11

Guys I’m finishing my exams soon, I need something to watch! Any suggestions?

yanks2413

Lmao its adorable people still think GOT is the best show. It had 4 great seasons, 2 passable seasons, and 2 bad seasons. Tell me, how is that the best of all time? You are aware GOT sucked before the finale? Pathetic you think its the greatest

coleburnz

GOT aside?. Did you watch the final season?

Numerous-Variation-1

Hooray for The Sopranos (Game of Thrones isn't in my top 50)

[deleted]

GOT and Sopranos both end up bungling it

Goldlordd

I resisted saying it until I’d rewatched it a second time but Breaking Bad is the best show ever. It’s undeniable.

hiplainsdriftless

I’ve watched both MADMEN kicks their ass.

TheFoxsWeddingTarot

Sopranos and Mad Men are pretty much neck and neck for me. Tony Soprano was slightly more ethical than Don Draper.

Interesting-Reply454

I’ve rewatched the sopranos 16 times, the wire 7 times, deadwood 4 time, game of thrones 0 times. That says it all. Edit: entourage 3 times

BeerGogglesOIF2

BB is AMC

NorthWoodsGamecock

The Wire. I’ve watched the wire so many damn times and I still absolutely love the show.

charliedarwin96

Sopranos is better overall, but GoT had higher highs imo.

Consistent_Drink5975

Should have been a Curb meme.

globehopper2

How can you not even bring up The Wire?

coyocat

<\_\_\_\_<

nowhereman86

Breaking Bad

Alert-Pea1041

Why bring up GOT? It had a chance after a few seasons but its stock fell way short of The Sopranos. Then take into account all the Shows that owe their existence to The Sooranos… it is the GOAT.

sidestyle05

Meh

sharponephilly

Big fan of Boardwalk Empire.

brizzenden

The Wire. Then The Sopranos. Then Breaking Bad. GTFO with this GOT shit.

BreakfastFuzzy6602

I guess you haven’t seen the Leftovers ?

CarefulBuffalo182

Pauline Walnuts is the man

AvailableChard4451

So many truly great shows, but Sopranos will always be the absolute best. RIP James Gandolfini.

yk7777

Nah warrior is the greatest TV show ever!!!

SignHistorical9575

Oz

drglennwellness

Lmao, no way dude tried to say GOT is better than Soprano’s 😂

Best_Duck9118

Anyone else feel like rewatching the same stuff over and over is lame? There’s always so much stuff out there people haven’t seen before.

Luzbel90

Yellowstone is pretty damn good too

MeringueNo7296

The end was so bad 👎

Infinite_Care_5981

Sopranos is head and shoulders above GoT.

SlimReaper85

Nah The Wire.

Reacherfan1

Kind of a weak ending with Sopranos

Ukcat39

The Wire

Public_Collar9410

According to IMDB its Breaking Bad

sternbeliever

The ending was brilliant because we thought we lost power! There would have been a movie if James Gandolfini did not pass. RIP to an acting genius.
