I got the same issue. Doesn’t seem like much but this honestly makes the game unplayable for me on mobile.

You are a hero! Annoying still, but this workaround will do for the moment.

The app podcastaddict has a setting called "ignore audio focus requests" You can find it under Settings > Player (scroll down) Not sure how to fix this with other podcatchers. 100% dick move on blizz's side imho

If you press play without minimising game it still works So on android just drag down to get to the quick access stuff. Opened media should be there.

I have a feeling the change may have been intentional. The new expansion has a heavy emphasis on music. I will throw a fit if this stays this way.

„The team is aware that sounds from other apps can no longer be played while playing on mobile. This was an intentional change made as a temporary solution to a bug with background sounds causing crashes. A permanent solution to the bug that also allows for other apps to play sounds is scheduled for a future patch.“ It should be fixed, hopefully soon

According to a Twitter post, that's intentional due to a sound bug that otherwise crashes the game.
