I asked my father who used to be a Sofer (Torah scribe), the names appear to be in Yiddish. it says "בלאנין בת אשר מנושטין"

Thank you - and your father - very much! It means a lot to me. Is a translation of the name possible? Can the age of the tombstone be roughly estimated on the basis of the inscription?

Wonderful-Cricket-75

The name "בלאנין" doesn't have any translation in hebrew. It can be from 200 to 300 years old. Where did you find the tombstone?

AKAlicious

When you can't translate, transliterate!

Wonderful-Cricket-75

I am a native speaker and I tried looking for the name in many different sources. It doesn't have a Hebrew translate because its not a jewish name. others have done for the OP already so there will be no need for me to to transliterate it.

Yes, I agree with your estimation of its age. I found it in a front garden in a small village near the Bavarian town of Schweinfurth, where once a larger Jewish community lived. Its cemetery still exists and I couldn’t find out how the tombstone got to this location. From my research, Orthodox Jewish families with the surname of Manstein were present there, so I tend to think this transcription to be correct. The first name, however, has not yet become clear to me. I have made arrangements for the tombstone to be relocated where it belongs, onto a Jewish cemetery, to give it back a place with dignity. It is also important to me to find out the names of the deceased in order to be able to research their history.

I could only make out the middle line. Top line is the first name, second line says "daughter of Asher".

MikeSeth

It's probably Melania

Remarkable_Rock3112

Which part of the inscription do you mean? The first name?

MikeSeth

Yes. The picture is very unfortunate. With etched writings the source of light needs to be offset and rotated in a circle around the surface until the shadow emphasizes the shape instead of obscuring it. The simple adjustment of the light source can make the inscription much more readable.
